Lame bowl lineup: Did BCS fear the Frogs?

bcsWhen it comes to his year’s bowl lineup, it might not have been the year of the Dogs, but it’s certainly a dog year once you get past the BCS title match between Alabama and Texas.

I was looking down the list of this year’s bowl matchups to see which ones I might want to circle on the calendar as must-sees. It’s definitely an underwhelming lineup.

Forget the early minor bowls, which boast the likes of Fresno State vs. Wyoming, and Central Florida against Rutgers. OK, BYU against Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl might occupy the attention for a quarter or two. Ditto USC and Boston College in the Emerald.

But the Music City puts its perennial SEC team, Kentucky, against Clemson, who got jobbed by the Gator Bowl. Unless Clemson goes into a post-ACC championship funk, that should be a blowout.

Miami and Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl doesn’t excite me much as a viewer. Neither does Arizona-Nebraska in the Holiday.

Actually, one of the more interesting bowls this year should be the venerable but oft-overlooked Sun, which pits Stanford, with Heisman candidate Toby Gerhart, against a down but still dangerous Oklahoma team.

Missouri and Navy in the Texas Bowl?  Bleh. Ditto two 6-6 teams, Iowa State and Minnesota, in the Insight Bowl.

The Chick-fil-A opted to go with Virginia Tech instead of Clemson in its ACC-SEC pairing and decided Tennessee would be better for business than Georgia. I’ll probably check it out, but I’m thinking Hokies all the way.

Then we come to the maverick bowl that initiated the chain of events that pushed the Dogs all the way down to Shreveport: the Outback. They let themselves get talked into taking an inconsistent Auburn team by the Tigers’ campaigning athletics director and matched them with … Northwestern. Yawn-inducing. Really, just about any of the 7-5 SEC teams would be favored in that game.

LSU and Penn State in the Capitol One might hold my interest for a while, but does anyone except Bobby Bowden loylists care about FSU and West Virginia in the Gator? The Rose is your usual boring Big 10-PAC 10 pairing, this time Ohio State and Oregon. And even if the Gators cry all the way to New Orleans and take the field as dehydrated as their coach, I can’t see them having much trouble with Cincinnati. Okie State and Ole Miss in the Cotton? The Cowboys don’t have Dez Bryant any more, so the Rebels shouldn’t have too much trouble there. Tech and Iowa? Yeah, that’ll draw blockbuster ratings for the Orange.

Putting TCU up against Boise State in the Fiesta is pretty much a waste. It would have been fun to see the Horned Frogs take on the Gators in the Sugar. Or even the Jackets in the Orange. But leave it to the BCS to avoid anything really interesting once you get past the national championship game. Maybe they feared the Frogs would show up a BCS conference team and give the Mountain West more ammo in its battle to get a guaranteed spot in the proceedings.

Actually, compared with a lot of these matchups, Georgia and Texas A&M looks pretty entertaining.

Wow Bill, I guess its all about perspective. I looked down the bowl list and thought it was actually better than usual in terms of interest. Maybe it depends on where your team ended up. LSU/Penn St stands out. TCU/Boise actually sounds interesting, though I would have liked to see Tech play TCU. Anyway, good luck against A&M, I will be pulling for your dogs as usual when they are not playing Tech. Thanks to the classy UGA fans who offered congrats after Sat night.

Thanks Joe for reminding us that we are the ACC Champs but we won’t forget it for a while. Yes, beating GT was the signature win for your program in the last 10 years…congrats and enjoy…it will not happen very often in the future.

Hey Bill. Why is Clemson going to destroy Kentucky? Florida did crush Kentucky but Clemson is not Florida. Clemson is in the class of UGA, USC,TENN and Kentucky was = to or better than thoughs teams.
It will suprise me if the line will more than 3 points ether way.

You are pretty much right about the lack of appeal (although I disagree on a few predictions). That said, Florida vs. Cincy is just fine (if Cincy keeps its staff in tact for the game) and is just as appealing as watching TCU play Florida.

Bowls are often lame because of the tie-in requirements, and OH YEAH, Because bowls suck compared to a BCS Playoff!!!! But hey, I guess playoffs are only for every other division of college football and every level of pro football, and every level of nearly every sport!!!! (try and find a legitimate sporting companion to a bowl system for any others).

Wow, just wow. Our signature win is beating GT, I know you could not have typed that with a straight face. UGA plays in a real conference, unlike the ACC, so we have better opponents such as Florida, Alabama, LSU, etc to get our signature wins in the past 10 years from.

GT a signature win, good to see you GT fans still don’t have a clue.

Hey TCU…COME ON MAN!…Where the hell did you get your UGA arrest numbers…did you make them up?..I think so. Are you that stupid…do you really think anybody cares as to how many UGA athletes got moving vehicle violations over the past two years. How many did your mother get? how about your father? how about your sister? COME ON MAN!…It truely amazes me that all The Tech fans want to talk about is UGA arrest numbers….lets talk Tech robberies or hold ups on campus and while were at it lets talk Tech athletes that have been arrested…I think its 27 or 28. you’ll have to look it up to confirm. TCU is a Tech fan ….you can book it. I know people that went to TCU and believe me they are nice people and could give a rats a$$ as to how many UGA athletes have gotten tickets for moving vehicle violations over the past two years….You Tech fans are pathetic…one thing is for certain you have a major inferiority complex when it comes to Georgia…just remember though…..UGA RUNS THIS STATE…ALWAYS HAVE…ALWAYS WILL…30-24!

Suck it Nerds!!!!

Its funny that we have been to 3 BCS bowls in the last 7 years and Tech now 1 in the last 19 years or something like that. Correct me if I’m wrong cuz I don’t kept up with high school football aka ACC. Its funny how the closest Tech fans are out now. You know last year a idiot at work was all up in my face last year after Tech beat GA. You know what my response was “I didn’t know you were a Tech fan” thats right Techies, you know who the GA fans are cuz we don’t hide like you do during a down year/s.

I’m was a Dawg when I was born and will be one when I die. Maybe one day you will know what it is like to be a true fan. I will support CMR no matter what, cuz there ain’t no triple high school crap, its NFL style all the way baby

We won the ACC, we are going to a BCS bowl. For some reason the UGA fans are the only ones in the country that don’t seem to think that’s an accomplishment. 11-2 > 7-5 no matter which way you look at it.

Otto: The non-BCS teams have won 3 of 4 times. Hard to say they don’t belong in the same division.

BCS were cowards to match up TCU and Boise. Just means they cant’ embarrass the BCS teams by both winning.

Remember Utah vs Alabama?

Shocking the a UGA loser would find the bowl lineup lame considering where his beloved puppies wound up. Congrats over your great win over GT, it sure did help your bowl standing considering the bowl game in your own state wouldn’t even consider taking you. Of course the Chick-Fil-A bowl probably wanted to have an up and coming team like UT instead of a has been like UGA.

If you watch the news , you will notice that these so-called robberies are NOT happening on the Tech campus.. They are happening on Atlanta streets not on the GT campus. So before you start throwing our made up numbers (27-28) and false information (on campus robberies), make sure you do your homework.

The only Bpowl match up I don’t like is the Fiesta. TCU should be playing UF. As I see it, TCU is #3 and UF is #4. Also, BSU against either Cinci or Tech. I actually favor Tech vs. Cinci seeing as to high powered offenses on the oppisite in extremes battle each other. That would be an entertaining game.

Let’s see how this looks. UA vs. Texas (MNC)
UF vs. TCU (Sugar)
Tech vs. Cinci (Orange
OSU vs. Oergin (Rose)
BSU vs. Iowa (Fiesta)
That would be better mactch ups. The rest of the Bowls are what they are. Only meaningful for the fans of those teams.

Every team in the SEC is more balanced between D and OGeorgia’s been scrweed over buy refs since the bumrush. How did the officiating team justify two penalties. DThey can’t,,

Another SEC snob. I am a fan of Geogia and the SEC, but there are other good teams out there and Georgia may find that out when they play Texas A&M. I think that the bowl games are a pretty good match on the whole. Arizona vs. Nebraska should be a very good bowl game. Boise St. and TCU likewise. Florida better be ready for Cincinatti.

My biggest disappointment with the bowl schedule is having TCU and Boise playing one another. I would have preferred to see them split up to see how they would fare against BCS conference schools. Then, maybe, we could quash the debate about whether or not they’re worthy of consideration for the Championship.

UGA-A&M, sounds about right considering the way this season panned out for UGA, UT, AU, etc.

Great write, man. I agree. I also think that GT will get punked in their bowl game as they usually do. UGA has a decent chance against A&M because Willie et al have been ejected from the UGA staff albeit 2 years too late! Let’s not forget the fact that UGA should be in the Orange Bowl since they put a smack-down on the ACC Champ. Heck, I guess UGA is the ACC Champ since they beat GT AND beat the team (USCe) that creamed GT’s ACCCG opponent. That’s logic…..right?
