Lame bowl lineup: Did BCS fear the Frogs?

bcsWhen it comes to his year’s bowl lineup, it might not have been the year of the Dogs, but it’s certainly a dog year once you get past the BCS title match between Alabama and Texas.

I was looking down the list of this year’s bowl matchups to see which ones I might want to circle on the calendar as must-sees. It’s definitely an underwhelming lineup.

Forget the early minor bowls, which boast the likes of Fresno State vs. Wyoming, and Central Florida against Rutgers. OK, BYU against Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl might occupy the attention for a quarter or two. Ditto USC and Boston College in the Emerald.

But the Music City puts its perennial SEC team, Kentucky, against Clemson, who got jobbed by the Gator Bowl. Unless Clemson goes into a post-ACC championship funk, that should be a blowout.

Miami and Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl doesn’t excite me much as a viewer. Neither does Arizona-Nebraska in the Holiday.

Actually, one of the more interesting bowls this year should be the venerable but oft-overlooked Sun, which pits Stanford, with Heisman candidate Toby Gerhart, against a down but still dangerous Oklahoma team.

Missouri and Navy in the Texas Bowl?  Bleh. Ditto two 6-6 teams, Iowa State and Minnesota, in the Insight Bowl.

The Chick-fil-A opted to go with Virginia Tech instead of Clemson in its ACC-SEC pairing and decided Tennessee would be better for business than Georgia. I’ll probably check it out, but I’m thinking Hokies all the way.

Then we come to the maverick bowl that initiated the chain of events that pushed the Dogs all the way down to Shreveport: the Outback. They let themselves get talked into taking an inconsistent Auburn team by the Tigers’ campaigning athletics director and matched them with … Northwestern. Yawn-inducing. Really, just about any of the 7-5 SEC teams would be favored in that game.

LSU and Penn State in the Capitol One might hold my interest for a while, but does anyone except Bobby Bowden loylists care about FSU and West Virginia in the Gator? The Rose is your usual boring Big 10-PAC 10 pairing, this time Ohio State and Oregon. And even if the Gators cry all the way to New Orleans and take the field as dehydrated as their coach, I can’t see them having much trouble with Cincinnati. Okie State and Ole Miss in the Cotton? The Cowboys don’t have Dez Bryant any more, so the Rebels shouldn’t have too much trouble there. Tech and Iowa? Yeah, that’ll draw blockbuster ratings for the Orange.

Putting TCU up against Boise State in the Fiesta is pretty much a waste. It would have been fun to see the Horned Frogs take on the Gators in the Sugar. Or even the Jackets in the Orange. But leave it to the BCS to avoid anything really interesting once you get past the national championship game. Maybe they feared the Frogs would show up a BCS conference team and give the Mountain West more ammo in its battle to get a guaranteed spot in the proceedings.

Actually, compared with a lot of these matchups, Georgia and Texas A&M looks pretty entertaining.

Bill…nice blog Finally, I can read your blog and even as a loyal Tech fan can agree with what you have said !!

I too agree that it looks like the fix wa sin on the non BCS teams in the big bowls. No one wanted a BCS conference to be embarrassed (much less two) and personally, I think TCU would beat just about anyone out there. Boise, I think would get beat, but there is always that chance that they are so excited and their opponent is so uninspired…..better to keep the mystique of the big boy BCS conferences and keep all the money to ourselves, right??

Meh. Count me as someone if favor of a 16 team playoff, like the *rest* of college football does it!!

BTW, Tennessee vs VT should be a good game. UT has certainly shown they can play well at times (Bama, UGa), so VT could go oh-for-Atlanta this year.

Auburn vs. Northwestern won’t be “yawn-inducing” for those of us going to Tampa! Bill, what is an AD supposed to do if not “campaign” for his university and its collegiate teams? In this case, should the AD not make an attempt to obtain the best possible bowl scenario?

Aw come on Cuz. Everybody knows a QB is never as good as his true freshman year. We should have not have let that broken leg bone stand in then way of playing him. Burn the RS for one game. A year of running the scout team, and his second full year of practicing isnt going to improve a QBs game. He has to take snaps in a bowl game to get any better at knowing the playbook.

Heck look what Niki Satan did with McElroy, do you think he is any better that Cox, thats a heck no. Cox is not going to beat anyone with his arm, just like McElroy can’t. On top of the Fiesta Bowl matchup,
The two teams played each other last year in the Poinsettia Bowl
TCU beat Boise State 17-16

TCU should have been in the Orange or Sugar Bowl like you say.

Leave it to a UGA guy to write a blog like this..he loves the TAM-UGA and puts down all the other match ups..I guess he loves losers..Just like UGA, A&M played a one good game at the end of the season..this is the same A&M team that lost to OK by 55, a 3-9 Colo at home, KSU by 48 and AR by 28..best win is against an 8-4 Tx Tech team…I love how you said that TN would be better for business than UGA..I guess that was the reason instead picking the team that won by 26 in a head to head matchup..you could say that if you didn’t have the exact same record

You bash the Miss/Navy game..one team that throws 35-40 times a game against a team that throw maybe 2 times a game..that is why u aren’t a rue fan..teams that are exact opposite are fun to watch..
Also, leave you a UGA guy to type something without facts..the BCS had nothing to do with putting Boise and TCU in the same bowl..the bowls get to pick who they want..the only thing that the BCS determines is the NC game and where the conf champion goes…

Ohio State and Org is going to be a great game..D (OS) vs O (Org)..also think the Org bowl is going to be good as well match great D vs great O

You are a bag of sour grapes that is worried UGA will not sell your allotment of tickets for $30..so now Tech fans will bash you about ticket sales

All of the bowls, after the BCS championship game, are total crap. A quick fix would be to let each subsequent bowl pick TWO teams at once, rather then take turns picking one team.

Also, screw the Rose bowl and their tradition. The Sugar hasn’t gotten it’s “tradition” with the ACC and SEC matchup lately. It’s way past time the the big boys stood up to the Rose bowl people.

We all know what the real fix should be. The bowl system is outdated, time for change.

I commented during the Tech-UGA game that the way to defeat Tech is to run the ball, maintain control on time of possession, and limit the turnovers. Georgia pretty much did that, and that kept the Tech offense where it can do no damage… on the bench. Defenses have had a hard time containing their option attack. Iowa may have a strong defense, but that by itself will not win the game. Tech’s first seven possessions in the game against Clemson resulted in either TD’s or field goals. The Hawkeyes will have to run a strong offensive attack, estabish the run and eat up the clock to keep Tech from controlling the game.

The Bulldogs will have their hands full with Texas A&M. A&M took Texas all they way to the end of the game before Texas pulled it out. The air was full of footballs in that game. The Pup defense will have to be extra good and disciplined to keep things under control. I don’t think the A&M defense is so tough so as to keep UGA from being able to move the ball with success, but once again turnovers are going to be a deciding factor in that matchup. Whoever limits the turnovers will win the game. UGA will also have to keep the stupid penalties to a minimum to keep things under control as well.

I think Bama will take Texas to the woodshed, just like the did to Florida. Florida can’t be in a funk when Cincinnati takes them on, or they will be posting another L on the results column. By the way, Florida exhibited what is wrong with having only one player being the key to success, rather than having a team effort. Tebow is good, but he can’t do it all.

The VT-UT match up actually should produce a pretty entertaining and close fought game. They are a fairly even matchup (as long as UT can keep any more players from getting introduced to local law enforcement.)

TCU-Boise State is the BCS wimp-out game. I think it was a case of “What do we do with these guys? I know! Lets let them play against one another!” They should be playing against BSC conference champs from other divisions. A Tech-TCU matchup in the Orange would have been a great game to watch.

Some of the other bowls are yawners. Watch with a handfull of NoDoze.

At the end of the Fiesta bowl there will be two teams that have played all year without playing a quality opponent. Tebow and a center could beat Cinci by 100. I don’t believe any of those teams should be allowed a top 10 ranking. But neither should an ACC team as obviously they play no one either.

Shultz commented that Auburn was more attractive than UGA for the Outback. Can anyone tell me how anyone that UGA beat can be considered attractive at all? The ironic thing is that we fell all the way to the toilet bowl and may face one of the few non SEC team outside the BCS bowls that can beat us. A&M gives us bad match problems on defense, they are strong where we are weak. Win and it’s no big deal, lose and it makes us look worse than we already do. It’s not a good pairing for us.

All of this negativity from Tech fans disguised as other posters is just further proof how much the loss to UGA hurt them.

Bill, you bring up a very valid point, but the hatred and jealousy from the insects is “shouting over you”. I think the BCS was scared to pair Boise and TCU against other teams from the BCS conferences because of what happened a couple of years ago when Boise beat Oklahoma. Imagine if that happened twice in the same year.

All you have to do is look up and down the bowl selections to find some real stinkers. The FSU to the Gator Bowl is a supreme example of how corrupt the current system is in picking these. UGA doesn’t deserve a better bowl because they didn’t play well enough to earn one. However, I am just happy they are going bowling at all. Besides, beating Tech by twice the point spread referred to over the past year as an “a$$ kicking” made the entire year for me. If 3 points is an “a$$ kicking” what does that make 6 points, Techsters?

Too funny!

Two thoughts….UGA, OU, USC all having down years…as cycle will go. That the Outback was allowed to pick Auburn instead of two teams that beat them and had better conference records goes straight to the SEC Office. I hope and pray UGA never goes to that slime of a bowl again. I for one will NEVER spend a dime on tickets to the Outback nor their Steakhouse.

Here is the problem–our AD can’t do what is best for our football program, from scheduling meaningless games out west to not having the clout to take care of us at bowl selection time, ADDE has too big of an eye on the bottom line and not a big enough eye on wins and losses.
