Athens paper favors charge for North Campus tailgating

In an editorial published in Sunday’s Athens Banner-Herald, the paper came out in favor of UGA beginning to charge tailgaters for access to the university’s North Campus quadrangles.

The ABH noted that UGA President Michael Adams said last week that a committee looking into how to get a handle on the trashing of North Campus on game days by tailgaters had recommended that the university consider limiting access to that area of campus if tailgating crowds get too large, or start charging a fee for the privilege of tailgating there.

Adams said he would “recoil a little bit” from the prospect of charging for tailgating, but the Banner-Herald noted that restricting access to North Campus would be a hardship for those folks simply trying to get from downtown Athens to Sanford Stadium. Plus deciding when to close off the area would be problematic.

Charging for access seems to be the most workable option, the paper concluded.

“Charging a nominal fee for a tailgating permit, and issuing individual permits for specific areas of North Campus, would also allow university and athletic association officials to identify people who are trashing the campus and to take action” such as revocation of tailgating privileges, or of the ability to buy game tickets, the Banner-Herald said. “Such sanctions would serve to ensure tailgaters’ compliance with what, frankly, already should be a common standard of cleanliness and respect for the University of Georgia.”

What do you think? Is making tailgaters pay to set up on North Campus the best way to keep the grounds from being trashed?

Jeff Owens announced on Twitter this weekend that he’s been invited to play in the Senior Bowl. … Kudos to the Dogs who made AP’s All-SEC team: wide receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Rennie Curran and punter Drew Butler on the first team, and offensive lineman Clint Boling, kicker Blair Walsh, defensive end Justin Houston and defensive tackle Geno Atkins on the second team. Not a bad showing for an off year! … Georgia drew a single vote in USA Today’s coaches’ poll, and it wasn’t from Mark Richt. Retiring FSU legend Bobby Bowden was the only coach to list the Dogs. … My son passes along a great line about the SEC championship from the Braves & Birds blog: “Now that the Crimson Tide have blown up the Death Star, how do they get up for an encore?” … For those of you who think the color of jersey or helmet worn by a team means anything other than a fashion statement, my pal Dan notes that the Gators, who again wore that retro headgear in the SEC championship, have never won a conference title wearing white helmets. Something else to cry about.

I’ll be off Tuesday and Wednesday, but the Blawg will return on Thursday.

If you could care less, that means you care.

I believe what you meant to say was that you couldn’t care less.

There is certainly a problem. People do need to have more respect. Pay to tailgate may be an answer, but before that. Try having some security on North Campus after 7pm. As reported to me by the officer that spends the day there, at kick-off everyone is reassigned. There are periodic patrols through the area, but no one there consistent. I asked because we have people stay at the tailgate and watch the game and I needed to know where they would go to get help if needed. When security leaves, the area changes–mostly drunks left up there wandering and homeless people rumaging hrough trash looking for cans–dumping it out. We need responsibility, but the University needs to help.

I say make North Campus a no alcohol tailgating area. Don’t allow alcohol and police it like crazy (more on this later). That way only responsible tailgaters will be attracted to North Campus.

The root cause is irresponsible drunks who don’t care about the mess they leave behind. I happen to tailgate with responsible drunks. We drink plently but take our trash home with us and leave our area neat. Most of our neighbors do the same. It’s sad that alcohol is always linked to the mess left on North Campus. Sad, but true!

Any solution will not be successfull until Uga gets the police involved. Without enfourcement, no rule is effective.

We work on not having trash on our Top 10 beautiful campus in the world.

Tech, instead, has nothing but CRIME and drugs on their campus, in the slums of a city of 6 million where their students are held up all the time by gunmen who break down their doors to rob them.

Does anyone ever notice that the NC “mess” is always the crowd that tailgates in the library/law library area? The area near the arch has been cleaned up substantially. The pictures are always of the “library” area. Don’t know the logic of that, but it is a good question.
