Athens paper favors charge for North Campus tailgating

Tailgaters leave a mess on UGA's North Campus. (Elizabeth Quillin / Special)

In an editorial published in Sunday’s Athens Banner-Herald, the paper came out in favor of UGA beginning to charge tailgaters for access to the university’s North Campus quadrangles.

The ABH noted that UGA President Michael Adams said last week that a committee looking into how to get a handle on the trashing of North Campus on game days by tailgaters had recommended that the university consider limiting access to that area of campus if tailgating crowds get too large, or start charging a fee for the privilege of tailgating there.

Adams said he would “recoil a little bit” from the prospect of charging for tailgating, but the Banner-Herald noted that restricting access to North Campus would be a hardship for those folks simply trying to get from downtown Athens to Sanford Stadium. Plus deciding when to close off the area would be problematic.

Charging for access seems to be the most workable option, the paper concluded.

“Charging a nominal fee for a tailgating permit, and issuing individual permits for specific areas of North Campus, would also allow university and athletic association officials to identify people who are trashing the campus and to take action” such as revocation of tailgating privileges, or of the ability to buy game tickets, the Banner-Herald said. “Such sanctions would serve to ensure tailgaters’ compliance with what, frankly, already should be a common standard of cleanliness and respect for the University of Georgia.”

What do you think? Is making tailgaters pay to set up on North Campus the best way to keep the grounds from being trashed?

POOCH KICKS

Jeff Owens announced on Twitter this weekend that he’s been invited to play in the Senior Bowl. … Kudos to the Dogs who made AP’s All-SEC team: wide receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Rennie Curran and punter Drew Butler on the first team, and offensive lineman Clint Boling, kicker Blair Walsh, defensive end Justin Houston and defensive tackle Geno Atkins on the second team. Not a bad showing for an off year! … Georgia drew a single vote in USA Today’s coaches’ poll, and it wasn’t from Mark Richt. Retiring FSU legend Bobby Bowden was the only coach to list the Dogs. … My son passes along a great line about the SEC championship from the Braves & Birds blog: “Now that the Crimson Tide have blown up the Death Star, how do they get up for an encore?” … For those of you who think the color of jersey or helmet worn by a team means anything other than a fashion statement, my pal Dan notes that the Gators, who again wore that retro headgear in the SEC championship, have never won a conference title wearing white helmets. Something else to cry about.

I’ll be off Tuesday and Wednesday, but the Blawg will return on Thursday.

Look, Tech only beat 1 team in the BCS Top 25.

Tech played 6 opponents who do not even go to a bowl game.

Your campus is in the slums where the crime is, and the guns, and the drugs.

Tech’s SoS is Number 51 by The NCAA itself.

Iowa is a horrible opponent for any conference CHUMPionship game winner to have to play.

The game is in Miami, where the crime approximates that of Tech’s own campus. It is a The BCS Game which always has the dead last worst rating, and this match-up with Iowa is a horrible match-up with Iowa, who lost to Northwestern for God’s sake with their SoS Number 112 in the nation. Iowa is a horrible football team, whose only strength is stopping the pass, which is what Georgia Tech did to lose to UGA.

I have been tailgating on North Campus since the 80’s. There were no problems there until the hoards of young tailgaters arrived with their beer pong tables. It is not the older crowd trashing the place. It is not non-alum red necks either. It appears to me that it is recent grads who can’t afford a ticket and just show up to party. If they restricted North Campus to ticket holders the problem would go away. I know that it is the place to be on game day. However, when you trash the place, you lose your privilege. At homecoming when the area is blocked off for homecoming functions, everything is clean in those areas. They could plan more functions and restrict the area to those with a purchased ticket for the area.

I understand the Tech admin made sure they didn’t have this issue with thier football crowd. They went out and purchased a third trash can for the parking lot.

Most of the partying and trashing of the Old College portion of the campus is student or student wannabes who likely don’t even have intentions of going to the game. They are only there for the party – I would imagine their apartments and dorm rooms probably look the same as the campus does after game day. Most season ticket holders would never be that irresponsible! From the main library to the edge of town would have to be off-limits to “tailgateing” for everyone if you really want to be fair about it. I usually walk throught that area after games and I think it’s horrible what happens to the grounds, but that is the way it is with a “big-time” program – lots of people = lots of trash. With the new SEC television deal, there will be more and more night games so people will have more and more time to create trash – and to get soused! Maybe the big bucks from the TV deal can be used to fund the hiring of more “clean up” employees – help the campus and the economy all at once!

To UGA2001 – You better go look at some old videos man – Hershell wore red pants in away games during some of his time here dude! The helmets used to be silver back when Tarkenton played. the 1997 Outback Bowl featured UGA wearing black pants and the helmets all had black face masks and that team kicked Ron Dayne and Wisconsin all over the Big Sombrero. You might be too young to have a worthwhile opinion about some subjects but keep trying !

I think it’s a dang disgrace! Why would a respectable Dawg fan trash the campus? Show some dang respect for your university and pick up after yourself. It’s crazy … They give you the trashbags. How hard is it to place your trash in the bag? At our tailgates, we tie a trashbag on the side of the popup tent. We also make sure all the trash is placed in the bags. Come on guys! Don’t screw it up for everybody! Be respectful of the greatest university in the land! Go Dawgs!!!!

I duno…that sounds a little tough. It’s not really fair to the students. Don’t turn Athen’s on gameday into a NFL team on gameday.

Just hire more help, put out more trash bins. They have the money. Most people do not want to litter.

Redneck georgia fans are used to just throwing stuff on the ground around their trailers, so when they show up on campus on gameday, it’s more of the same. At bama, the fans keep the campus clean.

Georgia officials shouldn’t be complaining about all this trash all over campus. They make millions each game day and can afford to hire a bunch of people to go clean it all up. Who has time to throw away all the beer cans and food after a heavy day of drinking and eating at tailgate parties. Just hire some bums in the ghettos near campus to come clean it up and take whatever leftovers they want.

Being an alumn and season ticket holder, I am ashamed of NC….I have met friends there (older folks in thier 40’s) and watched all of these young punks…..Yea we drink/party etc, but we do throw things in a bag etc. The problem today is with the yound punks <25….and the folks like someone earlier said…the folks who just show up to party with no intention of going to the game….Face it 60% of tickets holders never attended UGA, nor anywhere ,and it is funny to watch how much they put into game day…..The solution is to have more police and trash service ongoing in that area..then the party folks will leave for somewhere else. I personally get embarassed when I see the "typical" dog fan hanging around spewing their knowledge and those are the ones that get interviewed on T.V. Hell, maybe stop selling tix to non alumni

Hey Dawgs,

I’m in the camp that Tebow is a damn good talent and would do well in the NFL. But I think the Jax Jags trying to pull him in for attendance would be disasterous for this guy.

He’d be a sideshow for two years then gone. He needs to go somewhere he can get some top notch NFL QB coaching. Not so sure Jax is the place.

New Rules

December 8th, 2009

Auction off sections of North Campus like the government does oil leases. Require a fee to bid and another heavy fee per game. Also, require a deposit based on the area of the lease.

Do not restrict free passage of non-tailgaters. The sidewalks should be used to define the leased areas and should be open for free passage.

If this doesn’t work shut it down and protect it with a (well rested) contingent from the Georgia National Guard.

I have no sympathy for these people. Trash breeds trash and this proves it!

UGA should follow what many popular beach towns do- anyone caught for underage possession/public intoxication/etc. should have to serve trash duty for the next week’s game. They wear orange vests and spend the day/night picking up trash on North Campus. Hopefully both the abuse of alcohol and the tailgating trash will begin to decline.

How about we block off the grassy areas of North Campus completely!!!! Tailgating is for parking lots. I get to Athens for about one a game a year and now that I am an alumni, I have an appreciation for the beauty of north campus. I understand that this is prime real estate (between downtown & the stadium) however, I don’t want my memories of historic north campus to be of public urination and beer pong. I enjoy a tailgate party as much as the next guy – but not at the expense of the campus. Party on – just somewhere else!

The idiots who are too sorry, lazy, trashy, to pick up their own garbage could care less that the University has to pay people to pick it up. They think that it is their lot in life to have others pick up after them, wait on them, do for them. The campus police have no trouble getting out in force to check on middle aged fans sitting around a flat screen television to see if the red cups are holding alcohol or not, while they sit at a spotless tailgate site, bothering no one and causing no ruckus. Let the police patrol the North Campus spot, and if a tailgate spot is trashed, determine who is the owner of the tent, television, etc.. in short, whose tailgate it is, and fine them say, 50 bucks, or 100 bucks. Or better yet, fine every person there 50 bucks. Maybe teach these spoiled morons to pick up after themselves.

Even though I am not a dog fan, I am a fan of the school of environmental design, one of the best anywhere. The attitude that ” It’s OK to be an idiot & a slob if I pay for the privilege” is while pathetic, all too common in the Bulldog nation. Just like an “undisciplined team”, we are our toughest opponent. To disrespect a proud legacy as the oldest land grant institution in the country and one of the most beautiful schools in the country by tolerating this is a shame. ‘Bama doesn’t do it. Ole Miss wouldn’t THINK of it…
I am not saying that there isn’t litter on Saturdays in these places, but there is definitely NOT reckless disregard at those schools, I have seen it the last 3 or 4 years. WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT UGA ?

The trash issue has gone down significantly since the University decided to put more than 8 trashcans around campus. Honestly, I don’t condone littering, but garbage will happen if you don’t give fans enough trash recepticles. We always put the trash in the car & emptied it when we got home because we couldn’t ever find any trash cans. The University brought this problem on themselves.
