Athens paper favors charge for North Campus tailgating

Tailgaters leave a mess on UGA's North Campus. (Elizabeth Quillin / Special)

In an editorial published in Sunday’s Athens Banner-Herald, the paper came out in favor of UGA beginning to charge tailgaters for access to the university’s North Campus quadrangles.

The ABH noted that UGA President Michael Adams said last week that a committee looking into how to get a handle on the trashing of North Campus on game days by tailgaters had recommended that the university consider limiting access to that area of campus if tailgating crowds get too large, or start charging a fee for the privilege of tailgating there.

Adams said he would “recoil a little bit” from the prospect of charging for tailgating, but the Banner-Herald noted that restricting access to North Campus would be a hardship for those folks simply trying to get from downtown Athens to Sanford Stadium. Plus deciding when to close off the area would be problematic.

Charging for access seems to be the most workable option, the paper concluded.

“Charging a nominal fee for a tailgating permit, and issuing individual permits for specific areas of North Campus, would also allow university and athletic association officials to identify people who are trashing the campus and to take action” such as revocation of tailgating privileges, or of the ability to buy game tickets, the Banner-Herald said. “Such sanctions would serve to ensure tailgaters’ compliance with what, frankly, already should be a common standard of cleanliness and respect for the University of Georgia.”

What do you think? Is making tailgaters pay to set up on North Campus the best way to keep the grounds from being trashed?

POOCH KICKS

Jeff Owens announced on Twitter this weekend that he’s been invited to play in the Senior Bowl. … Kudos to the Dogs who made AP’s All-SEC team: wide receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Rennie Curran and punter Drew Butler on the first team, and offensive lineman Clint Boling, kicker Blair Walsh, defensive end Justin Houston and defensive tackle Geno Atkins on the second team. Not a bad showing for an off year! … Georgia drew a single vote in USA Today’s coaches’ poll, and it wasn’t from Mark Richt. Retiring FSU legend Bobby Bowden was the only coach to list the Dogs. … My son passes along a great line about the SEC championship from the Braves & Birds blog: “Now that the Crimson Tide have blown up the Death Star, how do they get up for an encore?” … For those of you who think the color of jersey or helmet worn by a team means anything other than a fashion statement, my pal Dan notes that the Gators, who again wore that retro headgear in the SEC championship, have never won a conference title wearing white helmets. Something else to cry about.

I’ll be off Tuesday and Wednesday, but the Blawg will return on Thursday.

Just charge $1,000 per year to tailgate anywhere on campus. Pay up, or go to jail for any trespassing on game days anywhere on campus. The athens / university police need to get tough to enforce this ordinance, and UGA can make big money to hire people to clean up all the mess left behind.

Bill:
Are we really talking about Tailgating and garbage right now? Where are the blogs about who the Dawgs are going to get as a new DC????!!!! I realize we are in pure speculation mode here, but c’mon man!!! What is CMR saying about a replacement? What is Kirby Smart saying about coming back to Athens? Who is on CMR’s short list and who is showing some interest. Enough about the garbage already! Yes it stinks when fans abuse the campus, yes the University needs to crack down on offenders, but we’ve got some shoes to fill here and the Bulldog Nation needs some updates! Get off the garbage and get back on Coordinators.

The problem on North campus stems from ONE issue. When I was a freshmen 1997, students tailgated near their dorms and parking lots. My Sophmore or Junior year the university changed their parking policy to where students had to move their cars away from dorm lots mid day on Fridays before home games. This caused a shift in where students tailgated at. The university forced the students to congregate in the one place on campus where alumni tailgating wasn’t a priority…NORTH CAMPUS QUAD. The breakdown up there on gameday is about 85% students vs Alumni/Season ticket holders. Students have to walk up to the North Campus Quad so whatever is carried up there is left behind as garbage. They aren’t going back by the dorm after the tailgate on the way to the game or the bars downtown. I get to North Campus about 6:30am every Saturday. For the 8pm Kentucky kick off there was 50 of the temporary garbage cans set out. Thats not nearly enough for 10-15 thousand that show up to tailgate up there.

Its a simple issue of CAUSE and EFFECT. Kick the students out of their Dorm area and they congregate on North Campus.

Here we go…of course. Adams, mis-manages the tailgating on purpose, so that a huge mess is created by not providing enough services. Then a huge mess is left and the tailgators are at fault. So next year there will be a fee for tailgating on North Campus…and there will be no outcry. Instead there will only be support for the very person that created the problem in the first place. This is as crooked as crooked can be…and you suckers are just lapping it up willingly. Way to think for yourselves Bulldog nation! Most of you are just reacting to some admittedly awful pictures in the paper in support of the very person that stands to gain from charging to tailgate!!

Georgia Tech should cover the 3.5.

Iowa’s NCAA SoS is Number 17 to Georgia Tech at Number 51.

Iowa’s wins are all 3 over very questionable teams. Penn State, Arizona, and Wisconsin – none of whom beat anyone else.

Iowa cannot run the football to save their soul, and that is how you beat Georgia Tech. They can light up the Tech secondary, but Tech has a month to figure out to never put 7 in the box and to drop back 5, assuming Tech can find a nickel back to drop back.

Iowa just is not a good match-up for Georgia Tech. A Conference Champion should not have to face a team who LOST 2 of their last 3 games, including hapless Ohio State whom The SEC owns and highly questionable Northwestern who played SoS Number 112 and therefore somehow is facing Auburn in the Outback Bowl.

Northwestern LOST 4 games against SoS Number 112, just wait until you see whom it is Northwestern LOST to, but Northwestern beat Iowa. Good Lord, Northwestern LOST to Syracuse 4-8, Minnesota 6-6, Penn State whose ONLY WIN is over Northwestern BCS Number 35, and 6-6 hapless too Michigan State. But, this Northwestern crap team beat Iowa.

Iowa should have no hope.

The Big Ten (11) is such a joke a conference, none of them playing any one, and worse yet, all of them losing to nobodies and beating highly questionable therefore, teams.

Now, if Georgia Tech gives up on its run, and tries to pass the football with a “qb” who in 34 games over 3 years has thrown a grand total of 12 TD passes to 11 interceptions, Tech would be playing straight into the hands of the only thing Iowa can do, and that is to defend the pass. Iowa gets lots of practice practicing against themselves, and Iowa can pass the football.

Surely, Georgia Tech is not going to be that stupid, again, like they were against us on their last 4 plays in a row, which cost them the game. And, we don’t even have a secondary.

BuLLdawg – Sagarin’s SOS rankings are Tech #15, Iowa #49. Whatever. Same point, in reverse, I guess.

I’ve been ranting about Iowa’s ranking all season. They beat Northern Iowa in the opener by blocking 2 attempts at a winning FG, 17-16. They beat Ark. St. 24-21. I actually watched parts of 2 of their games after that, and they set a new standard for desperation football in the Big-10. I never imagined that they would be playing Tech in a bowl game, or in any major bowl losing 2 of their last 3 games.

They were rumored for the Fiesta because of “a big fan base there” and “they travel well.”

Well, I can’t diss them anymore, because they are the next opponent. Tech has to play very well, as always with Tech’s lack of defensive prowess.

I think it is a good idea. It is sad how bad the trash was this season. It will not look good in recruiting if the campus is trashed after games. That is the only way I see to solve it is by selling permits. It is sad that the fans can’t seem to show some respect for one of the best schools in the nation. I also think Walsh should have gotten first team honors. It is only because the Bama kicker plays for Bama. Walsh is the better kicker and should win Groza Award. Tech fans you lost 30-24. I am sick and tired of UGA fans and players acting like uniforms don’t matter.

The team I grew up cheering for has always had red jerseys, silver britches, and red helmets. They are generally considered one of the best looking uniforms in CFB and one of the most recognizeable.

It is the uniform Frank Sinkwich, Charlie Trippi, Fran Tarkenton, Herschel, Eric Zeier, Garrison Hearst, David Green, David Pollacks, etc, etc, etc wore.

Why change it and cheapen the program? Just wear the red and silver and stop entertaining calls to change it.

I thought most of our serious, ole school fans would like this but apparently not. Too many of our fans are just a bunch of wishy-washy flakes.

Just how dumb are you Georgia people? Why don’t you take a cue from some other SEC fans. At other campuses they don’t have this problem and if they do its much smaller in scope. Why? Because on game day they go around the tailgate area handing out trash bags for people to put their garbage. And then they come back around after the game or the next day and collect the full trash bags. How darn hard is that???
