Athens paper favors charge for North Campus tailgating

Tailgaters leave a mess on UGA's North Campus. (Elizabeth Quillin / Special)

In an editorial published in Sunday’s Athens Banner-Herald, the paper came out in favor of UGA beginning to charge tailgaters for access to the university’s North Campus quadrangles.

The ABH noted that UGA President Michael Adams said last week that a committee looking into how to get a handle on the trashing of North Campus on game days by tailgaters had recommended that the university consider limiting access to that area of campus if tailgating crowds get too large, or start charging a fee for the privilege of tailgating there.

Adams said he would “recoil a little bit” from the prospect of charging for tailgating, but the Banner-Herald noted that restricting access to North Campus would be a hardship for those folks simply trying to get from downtown Athens to Sanford Stadium. Plus deciding when to close off the area would be problematic.

Charging for access seems to be the most workable option, the paper concluded.

“Charging a nominal fee for a tailgating permit, and issuing individual permits for specific areas of North Campus, would also allow university and athletic association officials to identify people who are trashing the campus and to take action” such as revocation of tailgating privileges, or of the ability to buy game tickets, the Banner-Herald said. “Such sanctions would serve to ensure tailgaters’ compliance with what, frankly, already should be a common standard of cleanliness and respect for the University of Georgia.”

What do you think? Is making tailgaters pay to set up on North Campus the best way to keep the grounds from being trashed?

POOCH KICKS

Jeff Owens announced on Twitter this weekend that he’s been invited to play in the Senior Bowl. … Kudos to the Dogs who made AP’s All-SEC team: wide receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Rennie Curran and punter Drew Butler on the first team, and offensive lineman Clint Boling, kicker Blair Walsh, defensive end Justin Houston and defensive tackle Geno Atkins on the second team. Not a bad showing for an off year! … Georgia drew a single vote in USA Today’s coaches’ poll, and it wasn’t from Mark Richt. Retiring FSU legend Bobby Bowden was the only coach to list the Dogs. … My son passes along a great line about the SEC championship from the Braves & Birds blog: “Now that the Crimson Tide have blown up the Death Star, how do they get up for an encore?” … For those of you who think the color of jersey or helmet worn by a team means anything other than a fashion statement, my pal Dan notes that the Gators, who again wore that retro headgear in the SEC championship, have never won a conference title wearing white helmets. Something else to cry about.

I’ll be off Tuesday and Wednesday, but the Blawg will return on Thursday.

I wonder if those are the indigenous North American scavengers, or the Norway variety that came over in the holds of sailing ships during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Heck you need to charge or fine them. There is no excuse for what I have seen left. There is one thing about it, Willie Martinez and the other coaches can’t be blamed for this.

As a current student, I’ve done my fair share of tailgating on North Campus. However, it absolutely disgusts me to see the amount of trash left on my campus after the Saturday home games. Even more so, to look out on campus from the library as I type essays and see nothing but dirt. All season, UGA has done an incredible job of getting the mess cleaned up by the time classes start back on Monday mornings, but its still disheartning to see people treat our campus this way.

I’m aware that as alcohol level rises, common sense drops. I’ve seen my fair share of students (male and female) relieving themselves in the bushes. More often than not, there are alumni and loyal Bulldog fans doing the exact same thing. We’re all guilty in our own ways here… but aren’t you guys supposed to be the grown-ups that help set an example?

There are over 30,000 students who live here year round and attend classes on campus throughout the week. How would you like it if I came to your home, dumped my trash in your yard, and proceeded to “pitch a loaf” on the floor of your bathroom?

UGA has tried announcements on the stadium scoreboard, they’ve increased the number of trash cans, they’ve tried to make people more aware of this problem… nobody seems to listen. If anything, the trash situation has gotten worse instead of better.

If grown individuals, students and adults alike, can’t do something as elementary as throwing away trash, the right to tailgate on North Campus should be restricted (hopefully not taken away). Nothing wrong with charging a fee if the folks who are going to tailgate there will actually take care of the spot around them.

If you’re worried about access to the stadium, walk down Lumpkin Street or Jackson Street. If anyone has seen where the fraternities are on River Road, you’ll know that they’re all within sight (and walking distance) of the Stadium. If they’re going to charge, I hope some of that money will be used to pay security to keep a watch over campus during the game to prevent all the homeless drifters from swooping in and raiding peoples’ tailgates.

I have an amazing idea. How about showing a ticket to the game being held that day for the ability to tailgate on North Campus. Sure it puts the screws to the students that the University won’t let into the game, but they should be used to getting screwed by the University.

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago my friends and I would tailgate before games on North Campus right outside the Law Library and there was only a minimal amount of people around us. We could set up just about anywhere we wanted (and this was during the Pollack/Green era so it wasn’t like we didn’t have some good teams).

The last few years though N. Campus has become a madhouse…what changed? Did some other part of campus get closed off for tailgating?

I think the cops should set up a couple of tents of their own. Not only ticket litter bugs but put them in time out, an hour or so would do it. Make the tent an open one so everyone that walks by gets to see them. A little Public embarassment would do the trick. Or maybe instead of a ticket, make the offendors walk around and pick up trash.

I can’t believe some of you slobs are defending littering on campus. Take some pride in your school. The university makes tons of money because of a loyal fan base. That should not entitle you to trash it. You don’t litter and crap your own yard do you? On second thought, don’t answer that.

Have tried to say something nice about Shreveport a couple of times here today, but for some reason my posts haven’t been, er, posted. Maybe it was because I said something really ugly about Lame Lane…hope not, because I intend to continue to do so every chance I get.

Wife and I went to the ‘91 Independence Bowl and had a fine time. Since then Shreveport has added a lot of more stuff do to. In addition to a pleasant town, they’ve got more cajun/creole restaurants than Atlanta has high-priced steak places and BBQs combined…plus they’ve got casinos and horse racing – Atlanta has neither the last time I checked…

For those that feel put upon about being ‘tail-end Charlie’ in the SEC bowl selections, you lose five, blow the KY game, allow Lame Lane to whup-ya big-time, get jobbed by the officials in the LSU game, and seem to have done something to Pee-Oh the Outback Bowl people, along with the Chicky-Bowlers not wanting Georgians to come to town cause not enough will stay in the Downtown hotels (for a two or three night minimum…and just who does the Atlanta Sports Council think would come to a Georgia/GT Kickoff event? Martians?), then you have to just be thankful for whatever you get.

Go the Shreveport and have fun…guarantee it’ll be a better time than Hot-lanta or Miami. As much or more to do, plus the folks there are glad to see us coming – and not for pan-handling or mugging either.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

DirtyDawg – Historically, the New Orleans mob controls their associated areas better than the Miami mob, which is an open city, therefore beset by uncontrolled gangbangers. Whenever I’ve had to stay in the Miami area on business, it has been up in Jupiter or down in Key Largo. The one time I decided to stay in Miami proper, I got nervous and locked myself outside my hotel room in my underwear. You do *not* want to do that, ever!

If you make people pay money, they’re not suddenly going to want to be tidier. If you make people pay money AND you assign them a designated space, then when you find trash in their area, they will just say that the trash was put there by someone else who was walking through the area but didn’t have his own tent. If you prevent independents (people who don’t have their own tent set up) from entering North Campus altogether, then you reduce the hustle and bustle of tailgating and ruin it for everyone.

I am against the idea of having to pay but the atmosphere on North Campus the past few years has been different than what normally constitutes “tailgating”. Some of the people have used the games as an excuse to have large DJ parties that attract a hundred or so people. I think that something must be done but I feel like my $2000.00 for tickets and parking spot a deck that gets farther and farther away covers me. For the people that want to call the our fans that litter rednecks get over yourselves we live in Georgia and to many people around the country we are rednecks no matter if you live in Sugarloaf or in East Dublin.
