Pooch kicks: Dogs rumor mill working overtime

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

It’s getting kind of hard to keep up with all the folks rumored to be under consideration for Georgia’s defensive coordinator, and the fact is that much of this probably is pure speculation. Let’s see, so far I think the names I’ve heard the most are Bud Foster, Kevin Steele, Ellis Johnson, Kirby Smart, Dick Bumpas, Manny Diaz, Tommy Tuberville, Tyrone Nix, Bob Sanders and Brian VanGorder. And there are all sorts of unconfirmed reports of various names on that list being spotted in the vicinity of Athens.

Van Gorder, the former Georgia DC, says he’s happy with the Atlanta Falcons and isn’t interested in the UGA job, but Twitter rumormeister David Pollack, one of VanGorder’s former star players, isn’t buying it. Tweeted Pollack: “To everyone, VanGorder has a job so he can’t say he is interested. He is in the mix, believe it.”

Whether that’s true or not, I think Mark Richt and Damon Evans should scratch VanGorder off the list (if he’s on it) because a) he already quit this job once before and b) the guy changes jobs like some folks change cars. Even if VanGorder wanted to return to Athens, chances are if he were hired that we’d be doing this dance again in a year or two.

I still lean toward Alabama’s Smart, a former Georgia player, though I’m not sure what might lure him into a somewhat less than lateral move unless it’s the fact that as long as he’s working under Nick Saban, he’s not going to get the credit for the Tide’s defensive efforts. Saban reportedly doesn’t even let him talk to the press.

Still, it’d probably take major bucks to lure Smart. And Buck Belue thinks UGA should pay whatever it takes. Says Buck: “Why hitch the wagon to Smart? Because he’s the perfect fit. A Georgia guy. Studied defense under Saban. He’s young and energetic. He can recruit. This is a no-brainer. Go get him.”

Meanwhile, the well-connected Pollack, who tweeted Willie Martinez’s impending departure last weekend before the Tech game, says he’s hearing that assistant head coach/defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, the only survivor of Richt’s defensive coaching purge, is leaving on his own (as many have expected since he’s working without a contract). But, Pollack hedges, “I don’t know anything for sure.”

Odds are, though, that whoever is named Georgia’s new DC will have a clean slate to work with in terms of staff, and the Dogs will need a new recruiting coordinator.

OFF-FIELD PROBLEMS

The news that freshman defensive end Montez Robinson was arrested again Thursday in connection with an alleged fight with a female student, coming a few days after his arrest on an apparently related alcohol charge, adds perspective to those rumors back at midseason about the Indiana native being homesick and unhappy in Athens.

The facts in the case aren’t clear, since the alleged victim, Armita Didehvar, has told The Red and Black student paper that witness reports that Robinson slammed her into a trash can “are not true. … We just had an argument. Witnesses just blow things up.” But Robinson, who police believe also smashed the taillights of Didehvar’s car the night he was arrested for underage possesion of alcohol, obviously is a troubled young man who’s probably going to at least lose some playing time to suspension out of all this.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Robinson won’t be able to get back on track and have a successful playing career for the Bulldogs. But he needs to get his act straightened out. Any more trouble with the law and Richt ought to suggest he find another place to play football.

Coach Richt is a high profile coach with many contacts throughout CFB and the NFL. It may be Smart, Tubberville or whoever you would like to see. I am also sure that Richt has someone in mind and when the time is right he will let all of th Bulldawg faithful know who the man is for the job.

Just a few cases in point, Richt and Tubberville are apparently friends as are Richt and Tony Dungy are friends as well (remember back in the early fall when Dungy was in Athens for the Dad event. Heck, maybe Dungy was there for an interview). Just kidding, but my point being, Richt has some good contacts and will provide a solid coordinator for this program. It may not be who you want, but I believe he will make a very solid choice.

Seriously, I love Alabama’s history and the Bear Bryant era when I was a kid. Realistically though, the seventies when you could have 175 players and 50% of those couldn’t read or write are over. The playing field has leveled with the 85 limit and entrance requirements. Again, I’m still fond of Alabama but realistically with the current rules the National Championships will be spaced more evenly. The days of riding down dirt rodes and plunking a big strong farmhand onto a college team are over.

I do not think we will be pleasantly surprised with the new DC (and I hope I am wrong). I believe that Richt will bring in FSU’s Chuck Amato as the new DC. They go way back, are part of the Bowden diaspora, and Amato and Fisher don’t get along. I don’t believe for a minute that Richt will bring in someone who could replace him as head coach, now or in the future. Again, hope I’m wrong, but I see choice #1 being Chuck Amato, and choice #2 being Van Gorder (precisely because he is unstable yet coaches good defense).

Stafford Infection, I call BS. You write in a manner of someone much younger, less refined and less educated than you claim to be. Then again maybe you’re just an a$$.

Lazlo, How does someone write “young?” I am 27, yet i’m one you could easily find many successful authors, poets, speechwriters etc. who are younger than I. Secondly, I do not recall ever claiming to be refined; my only claim was of the extent to which this other gentleman was an old-guard uga redneck that I so often hear about. Lastly, I did not claim any educational level until asked and then provoked. So . . . it seems that you are the a$$.

Delbert, I read your post wrong, and I respectively have to disagree with you. If the other team holds the ball for 42 minutes and only scores 24 points, I think that’s a success for the defense and a problem with the offense. GT had the ball less than that against us and scored the same number of points. UNC also had 3 turnovers leading to 10 points. How many teams would even be close with 17 rushing yards (UNC rushing)? Yes, they allowed 317 rushing yards, but the two touchdowns didn’t come until the fourth quarter – AFTER the defense was worn out. And they forced three punts. One TD drive was only 38 yards due to TO, the other only 15 yards (field goal). The last TD drive in the 4th qtr was 8:15. If UNC had an offense like ours, what do you think the score would have been? And I don’t think the defensive recruits at UNC are ranked as high as ours. Imagine what that staff could bring in here, and what they could do with our players?
And let’s not talk about last year when they beat them 24-7.

I still vote for Withers and Blake from UNC!!

The Yellow Jackets forced three turnovers and held UNC to just eight first downs and 17 rushing yards. the Yellow Jackets held North Carolina (3-1, 0-1) to 154 yards on only 44 plays. Dwyer had 159 yds on 19 carries. Nesbit 89 yards on 32 carries.

I didn’t read every post, so my apologies if this is a repeat, but my understanding is that some people close to the inner workings of the program are saying that a contract is being finalized with Tommy Tuberville as the new DC. Additionally, CMR is going to retake his role as OC and make Bobo the QB coach again.

4 pages of smack talk about the University of Alabama by fans of weaker programs and fans of Johnny Come Lately Florida … No real need to even reply to the Gators . Seeing their Messiah in raw bawlling tears and Meyer running to the hospital for “dehydration” … they KNOW what the deal is .

Instead I’d rather comment on the weak minded Dawg fans . One of the best of the bunch was the one mental midget who got his last chance to spew just a few hours before the Tide dismantled Florida so thoroughly that Tim “Jesus” Tebow squalled like a baby for the last 10 minutes of his air time .

Face it guys … Georgia is … well Georgia … . An Auburn level program without even the excuse of having a historical powerhouse sucking the life out of you ( although Tech likes like they might provide that excuse for you if they keep building lol )

you guys will spend the rest of eternity hoping to take that next step up to become a REAL powerhouse program in college football … hoping that next year really is THE year …. telling every recruit in the nation they are “the next Herschel Walker/Champ Bailey” .

IF Kirby Smart wants to return to his alma mater his BEST bet to do it in style is to finish up at Alabama , pop off a couple more championships and wait the extra two years max it will take to you guys toss Richt out on his azz .

THEN Smart can simply claim the head coach title at Georgia when you pull an Auburn and fire the best head coach you have had in years because you simply can’t stand not being able to reach the levels Bama fans have grown accustomed to over the decades LOL

SCHULTZ- I know that you have masses of crap to sift through in order to find material worth responding to, but aren’t you an avid blogger, and isn’t your purpose to introduce your readers to new ideas, intertwined with subjectivity? What do you think about UGA’s DC dilemma? Are you a sports writer or a blog mediator? Despite your failure to take a firm position, you could at least inform some of the incompetent masses that the coaches they speak of are not PROBABLE replacements. Qualified- yes. Going to happen- NO. Unless I’ve missed something, you’ve failed to mention the (more probable) opportunity to acquire REGGIE HERRING. Give me something, and prove me wrong.

Attention all Bama fans on the GA blog. Except for Gulf Shores and the Space Center what does this second rate state have to offer. I am a Georgia fan living in the Shoals and I listen to a certain sports call in radio show every day at 2:00pm just to listen to the morones that call in everyday. I laugh my butt off listening to how stupid the sports fans in Alabama are. Every caller, calls the last caller a morone and they are all experts at the game of football. The show is hilarious and I hope it isn’t heard out-of-state because the entire nation would not think but will know that sports fans in Alabam are stupid illiarate buffons. Don’t beleive me, just listen to the show because the host of the show is just as arrogant egotistical and stupid as the callers. GO DAWGS
