Pooch kicks: Dogs rumor mill working overtime

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

It’s getting kind of hard to keep up with all the folks rumored to be under consideration for Georgia’s defensive coordinator, and the fact is that much of this probably is pure speculation. Let’s see, so far I think the names I’ve heard the most are Bud Foster, Kevin Steele, Ellis Johnson, Kirby Smart, Dick Bumpas, Manny Diaz, Tommy Tuberville, Tyrone Nix, Bob Sanders and Brian VanGorder. And there are all sorts of unconfirmed reports of various names on that list being spotted in the vicinity of Athens.

Van Gorder, the former Georgia DC, says he’s happy with the Atlanta Falcons and isn’t interested in the UGA job, but Twitter rumormeister David Pollack, one of VanGorder’s former star players, isn’t buying it. Tweeted Pollack: “To everyone, VanGorder has a job so he can’t say he is interested. He is in the mix, believe it.”

Whether that’s true or not, I think Mark Richt and Damon Evans should scratch VanGorder off the list (if he’s on it) because a) he already quit this job once before and b) the guy changes jobs like some folks change cars. Even if VanGorder wanted to return to Athens, chances are if he were hired that we’d be doing this dance again in a year or two.

I still lean toward Alabama’s Smart, a former Georgia player, though I’m not sure what might lure him into a somewhat less than lateral move unless it’s the fact that as long as he’s working under Nick Saban, he’s not going to get the credit for the Tide’s defensive efforts. Saban reportedly doesn’t even let him talk to the press.

Still, it’d probably take major bucks to lure Smart. And Buck Belue thinks UGA should pay whatever it takes. Says Buck: “Why hitch the wagon to Smart? Because he’s the perfect fit. A Georgia guy. Studied defense under Saban. He’s young and energetic. He can recruit. This is a no-brainer. Go get him.”

Meanwhile, the well-connected Pollack, who tweeted Willie Martinez’s impending departure last weekend before the Tech game, says he’s hearing that assistant head coach/defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, the only survivor of Richt’s defensive coaching purge, is leaving on his own (as many have expected since he’s working without a contract). But, Pollack hedges, “I don’t know anything for sure.”

Odds are, though, that whoever is named Georgia’s new DC will have a clean slate to work with in terms of staff, and the Dogs will need a new recruiting coordinator.

OFF-FIELD PROBLEMS

The news that freshman defensive end Montez Robinson was arrested again Thursday in connection with an alleged fight with a female student, coming a few days after his arrest on an apparently related alcohol charge, adds perspective to those rumors back at midseason about the Indiana native being homesick and unhappy in Athens.

The facts in the case aren’t clear, since the alleged victim, Armita Didehvar, has told The Red and Black student paper that witness reports that Robinson slammed her into a trash can “are not true. … We just had an argument. Witnesses just blow things up.” But Robinson, who police believe also smashed the taillights of Didehvar’s car the night he was arrested for underage possesion of alcohol, obviously is a troubled young man who’s probably going to at least lose some playing time to suspension out of all this.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Robinson won’t be able to get back on track and have a successful playing career for the Bulldogs. But he needs to get his act straightened out. Any more trouble with the law and Richt ought to suggest he find another place to play football.

We will have some competition for a hot shot DC.FSU,FLA,ND could all be looking for a new DC as well. This thing could turn into a bidding war. Will Evans step up to the plate and pony up the cash?We shall see shortly.

Hey WHAT, you should not talk so much and just enjoy how well your team is doing. When was the last SEC championship for Bama anyway, I cant remember it. I do remember UGA winning 2 SEC titles this decade however.

Don’t you enjoy having such a stellar season and then losing the SEC to Florida and then blowing against UTAH, UTAH, I mean really.

CBS.com has Georgia playing Iowa State in the bowl as of 12/3. That’s better than playing Texas A&M, who had several embarrassing blowout losses. Iowa State’s biggest losses were Iowa (35-3) and Texas A&M (35-10).

Buck just mentioned Kevin Greene as a possiblitiy at LB coach. Don’t know if there’s any truth to the speculation about his interest in the job. Bill, is Buck just “whistlin’ dixie” on this one?

NEWS FLASH!!!
The SEC Offices today announced that because of the state of the economy and as a show of solidarity with those who are out of work and suffering, next year’s SEC Media days would see coaches sharing hotel rooms.

One interesting pairing on the preliminary list: Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin and Florida coach Urban Meyer.

Bill,
Just a thought. Do you see Rodney Garner joining the Kiffins at UT? If so, how would that affect recruiting?

*(If this has been addressed before, please excuse the redundancy. Haven’t read the other pages on this blog).

I agree with those who support Coach Garner staying at UGA. He is often mentioned by more knowledgable people than myself, as an outstanding recruiter. I think he would be tough to replace.

Really?

Delbert D. – so you think playing Iowa State is better than playing Texas A&M even know A&M beat ISU 35-10? How does that math work. BTW A&M hung with and if they had any D would have beat Texas.

A lot of questions surrouding our D even when a new DC is named. Are Curren & Reshad returning next year & who will fill in for an all senior D line to graduate?

No question about O – it will be loaded with a ton of receivers and 2 RB’s that will RUN THIS STATE next year. The reason Brandon Smith was not used more was his habit of putting the ball on the ground. He’s needs more upper body strength going into next year.

Now open for recruiting tranfers…Hofstra drops football.

From si.com: (The university president) “said the 84 players were informed Thursday and were told they can keep their scholarships if they remain at the school. Those who transfer will be eligible to play immediately.”

Hofstra was 5-6 this year. Might be an athlete or two there. Tech has a Colgate transfer backing up Dwyer this year, and he’s played pretty good.

The Rev… You know, I looked it up last night and since 1990, no one in the SEC has better than a .500 record against the Gators – Nobody. As a matter of fact, the best record against Florida in the East is Tenneesse with a 6-14 record.

Now I am a Dog fan and I hate the fact that we are 2-8 against Florida. But guess what? So is just about everyone else! As much as I hate it, I have to give props to the Gator’s program. I would have to say that their dominence of the entire SEC is on par with the great sports dynasties of the past. It is just unbelievable what that program has done. (As a Dog fan, I now need to gargle to get that horrible taste out of my mouth!!! LOL!)

So that brings me to your post… If the only measuring stick you are willing to use on a head coach is their win/loss record against Florida these past 10 years, then every team would have a new head coach every year!!!

As for playing in the “big game”, Florida has only played in the NC game twice in the past 10 years (’08 and 06). With their dominate record over, well, EVERYONE, they have only been able to appear in the “big game” twice!

So here is the thing, if the only way you would keep a coach is if he (1) beat Florida, and (2) won the NC every year, then why even follow this sport? It appears to me that you are setting your sights a tad high.

Before you come back that I must not be a “real Dog fan”, I want Georgia to beat Florida and win NCs as bad as you do. All I’m saying is you are setting a bar far too high for anyone to obtain.

45ACP, I remember Sunseri and Herschel meeting in the hole in the Sugar Bowl. Ol’ Herschel won, but it was one hell of a lick. Smart said he would love to return to UGA, but methinks he would love to return as head coach. I don’t think Tubbs is going anywhere untill AU pays him the balence of his buyout. I heard that if Tommy takes another coaching posistion he will void his contract. I would like to see what Tenuta could do with UGA’s DBs and LBs, along with their DEs. The Dawgs D is somewhat undersized, but they have loads of speed and some very good skill posistion players. I would have loved to see Jones or Williams or Rambo blitz the QB from the blind side just once!

I don’t know what the likelihood of Garner returning to UT would be, but I’d hope that he didn’t wind up in the SEC. Of course, any recruits lost by him leaving might be offset by recruits that the new DC and/or recruiting coordinator might bring with them.

Any chance of getting Blake AND Withers from UNC? Blake seems to do a great job on the line and Withers does a great job on the secondary, and he is the def coord. Their defense did a pretty good job against Tech the last couple of years. Unfortunately, their offense sux.
I don’t care about Butch Davis, it’s gotta help when you’re the top program at a school instead of a sideline until basketball season….
I think if we got Withers he might lure Blake along. But then again, I don’t know them. They may not even like each other.
Who really makes the game plans for the UNC defense? That’s who ought to be the DC here.

Hey stafford infection …………go drink some Clorox bleach.

One more thing …………..Jones and Tyson do not make a complete SEC caliber D line. I did not suggest that they are bad ……….they are green and we have no back up depth on the D line and that is Gardner’s fricking problem. I say let him go as the new man will want to recruit his players. Gardner has failed with Reshad Jones and Bryan Evans, Rennie Curran, etc. and their ilk and that little punk Corner back Nicky Robey in South Florida saying he might take a pass if CWM leaves. . Fine let him ……..he is 5′6″ anyway. Small but slow, I’ll bet. Can you see him practicing with Marvleous Marvin Brown or AJ Green??? Too small. See Price Miller # 23. Failure he has been for 4 years. Midget corners we have recruited. Garner’s fault. CWM fault. Gone now. Good.

Obama and Vick??? Failures both. Heck, now we have folks hanging around the White H that no one invited, you idiot. Vick? A thug.

Thanks Bill. It’s kind of an understatement to suggest that these are the most important decisions will make, in regards to his future at UGA. No one can dispute the excellent job he has done in his first 9 years. This one kinda stunk, but at least they beat GT.

Richt’s regime may be starting to crumble just a bit, but that doesn’t mean the walls can’t be rebuilt. UGA must hit a homerun with whatever replacements they bring in to help coach the Dawgs.

Looks like the staff will be very thin for the bowl game. 680 says CWM and the other 2 won’t stay on to coach UGA in bowl. Might be an opportunity for Garner to upgrade his stock at DC.

bigdawg88 – I did some checking:

N. Carolina held Tech to the 4th least total yards this season, 406, although the score was 24-7.

UNC offense got only 154 yds., and time of possession was 42:06 – 17.54, Tech.

Whoa! That 42.06 TOP doesn’t seem to indicate strong defense.

Tech’s best game, ahead of Virginia. Other than the Tech game, UNC was pretty highly ranked.
