Pooch kicks: Dogs rumor mill working overtime

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

It’s getting kind of hard to keep up with all the folks rumored to be under consideration for Georgia’s defensive coordinator, and the fact is that much of this probably is pure speculation. Let’s see, so far I think the names I’ve heard the most are Bud Foster, Kevin Steele, Ellis Johnson, Kirby Smart, Dick Bumpas, Manny Diaz, Tommy Tuberville, Tyrone Nix, Bob Sanders and Brian VanGorder. And there are all sorts of unconfirmed reports of various names on that list being spotted in the vicinity of Athens.

Van Gorder, the former Georgia DC, says he’s happy with the Atlanta Falcons and isn’t interested in the UGA job, but Twitter rumormeister David Pollack, one of VanGorder’s former star players, isn’t buying it. Tweeted Pollack: “To everyone, VanGorder has a job so he can’t say he is interested. He is in the mix, believe it.”

Whether that’s true or not, I think Mark Richt and Damon Evans should scratch VanGorder off the list (if he’s on it) because a) he already quit this job once before and b) the guy changes jobs like some folks change cars. Even if VanGorder wanted to return to Athens, chances are if he were hired that we’d be doing this dance again in a year or two.

I still lean toward Alabama’s Smart, a former Georgia player, though I’m not sure what might lure him into a somewhat less than lateral move unless it’s the fact that as long as he’s working under Nick Saban, he’s not going to get the credit for the Tide’s defensive efforts. Saban reportedly doesn’t even let him talk to the press.

Still, it’d probably take major bucks to lure Smart. And Buck Belue thinks UGA should pay whatever it takes. Says Buck: “Why hitch the wagon to Smart? Because he’s the perfect fit. A Georgia guy. Studied defense under Saban. He’s young and energetic. He can recruit. This is a no-brainer. Go get him.”

Meanwhile, the well-connected Pollack, who tweeted Willie Martinez’s impending departure last weekend before the Tech game, says he’s hearing that assistant head coach/defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, the only survivor of Richt’s defensive coaching purge, is leaving on his own (as many have expected since he’s working without a contract). But, Pollack hedges, “I don’t know anything for sure.”

Odds are, though, that whoever is named Georgia’s new DC will have a clean slate to work with in terms of staff, and the Dogs will need a new recruiting coordinator.

OFF-FIELD PROBLEMS

The news that freshman defensive end Montez Robinson was arrested again Thursday in connection with an alleged fight with a female student, coming a few days after his arrest on an apparently related alcohol charge, adds perspective to those rumors back at midseason about the Indiana native being homesick and unhappy in Athens.

The facts in the case aren’t clear, since the alleged victim, Armita Didehvar, has told The Red and Black student paper that witness reports that Robinson slammed her into a trash can “are not true. … We just had an argument. Witnesses just blow things up.” But Robinson, who police believe also smashed the taillights of Didehvar’s car the night he was arrested for underage possesion of alcohol, obviously is a troubled young man who’s probably going to at least lose some playing time to suspension out of all this.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Robinson won’t be able to get back on track and have a successful playing career for the Bulldogs. But he needs to get his act straightened out. Any more trouble with the law and Richt ought to suggest he find another place to play football.

Congrats to Coach Richt on making a very tough decision and best of luck to the coaches who are leaving.

Tuberville would make an interesting DC given his success at U of Miami and AUB. His D background would make a nice counter to Richt’s O background…”The Riverboat Gambler” meets “The Tanned Iceman”.

Problem is, any success would certainly draw plenty of HC offers for Tuberville.

We’ll see.

People, do understand bowl games had a different meaning in the old days, it was a show rewarding your regular season success. So a champ losing a show game is no big deal in those days.

Back to Georgia’s DC search. In the big picture, Georgia is looking for somebody who can beat Florda. Can Kirby Smart do it? He did not beat Florida last year. Let’s see if he can do it tomorrow. Then you will know if you really want him.

I understand seeking Tuberville’s service as DC is delusional. But he is the one who can beat FL.

BTW, Muschamp was not that great at Auburn.

Bring on Van Gorder! It’s true he may be gone in 2 years! That going to be the case with any really good DC, unless you promise them a head coaching job.

What people fail to understand is we are GEORGIA. We are so good, all we have to do is call. We win national titles like humans breathe air. I can’t see why the DC’s at the top 3 teams in the country wouldn’t want to take a pay cut and the same position at UGA. What idiots they must be.

News flash, Georgia comes in second to the Gators again. Florida will probably lose Charlie Strong, one of the top 5 DC in the country to become a head coach at Louisville.
And I’ll bet dollars to donuts that the best available DC would go to Florida before ever considering UGA. Just some food for thought.

Florida takes the title again Saturday. QB is the difference.

Maybe after this weekend we have an idea of which way Richt will be going with this. Usually you aren’t going to fire somebody without having an idea of who you will be talking to or what direction you would want to take it.

He will be the new defensive coordinator.

Seems he lives in Shreveport and was instrumental in getting the dawgs a bid to the bowl game there. the booger eaters classic.

Georgia has beaten Alabama 3 out of the last 4 meetings and has won 2 SECC since Alabama won their last championship 10 years ago. We had a down year this year but Alabama isn’t the team that cheated their way through the ’60s and ’70s.

It should be a great game tomorrow. Both these coaches get their teams ready to play smashmouth football, every single time they step on the field. I was glad to see that Richt had the dawgs that way for the Tech game. I wish he could do that every game next year. With a new DC I think he will. Starts with the defense.

The only thing that matters in college football is winning. Titles from years past mean nothing except a trophy in the case. They have no bearing on winning or losing the next game. None. Unless you are Florida and defending the NC you have got nothing to brag about.

Please, Please Please do not go off the deep end for Smart. Saban is a defensive guru, and while I am sure Smart has picked something up, I am not willing to hitch our dreams to someone who has as little gameplan design experience as Smart. I can guarantee you Smart has next to nothing to do with that defense. Look at what Saban did with Major Applewhite and you’ll understand. Bob Sanders worries me because as DL coach for the Bills, he is leading a group that is surrendering the most rushing yards per game in the NFL.

our offense has been great since Bobo took over. People need to shut up about him leaving. He knew what he had this year and he had a QB that wasn’t going to stretch the field. Our offense has been 100% better since he took over play calling from Richt. Everybody forgets that our Defense won games 2002-2004 and our offense struggled a lot of the time.

Randy Cross just dissed the strength and conditioning program at Georgia on 680theFan. Also, he asked fans to show up at the Dome early to watch the T-shirt warmups and look at the well-defined bodies of the players on both teams.

Now that I read that, that seems a little bit ….weird.

I’d go with Suzanne Yoculan, but, that not being likely…..

On the Kirby Smart and the “lateral move” or not hoopla, why is it that people always want to look at a snapshot rather than actually analyze a situation in depth.

No way Kirby Smart would come to UGA? Really? Because, right NOW in time, ALA is playing better football than UGA? And no one would ever consider going to a struggling program (and, again, if UGA is a struggling program, I don’t know where that puts most of the rest of the teams in the nation)? To re-build a defense? To “Call the Junkyard Dogs” back to the Dog House?

[BTW, I personally like that image and think UGA should consider adopting it as a calling card and rallying cry for the UGA defensive side of the ball for the future.]

Uh, let me see. What shape was Alabama in when Nick Saban agreed to take the job?

End of discussion.

This (the UGA DC position) is a fabulous opportunity (for Kirby Smart or any other young, ambitious DC candidate). To get credit for rebuilding the Junkyard Dogs? With the offensive talent UGA’s got (assuming we can find a QB on the shelf since none of them has actually played any significant downs in the past year), rebuilding the defense could be THE key (or, at least, seen as the key) to UGA’s rise back to the upper echelons of the SEC and national football scene. Hey, this was a pre-season No. 1 team only one (football) year ago.

Who knows what’s going to happen or who’s coming to town. But, suffice it to say, riding to the rescue of a team with UGA Dogs’ pedigree is a very attractive opportunity for many, many coaches. Nothing would surprise me but, then again, it probably will.

The Dawgs really “stunk” it up this year on both sides of the ball. Except for the game with the Bugs they were a pretty pathetic bunch. How can one game, the game with the Bugs, indicate that UGA has “turned the corner?” A great year next year is not a foregone conclusion. Richt can get the team back on track but it might not be as easy a fix as coaching personnel changes.

I’ve been thinking of my record against Florida> I’m glad that most of you are so stupid that you don’t give a damn and you will focus on my average wins a season without taking into account that like ALL elite programs I have had a clear talent edge in at least 8 games a year. I’m glad i got this job in the midst of diminished expectations from you Phi Beta Kappas. Now nobody even cares that we have not played in a Big Game in over 25 years. I didn’t really like firing my buddy because if he stays around all you imbeciles would continue to blame him and not realize the buck stops with me. I’m sure you put up with the 2-8 because of the missionairy positions I’ve been in all over the world. Plus you all KNOW what a GREAT GUY I am. That has been documented everywhere. Plus my botoxed good looks and tan face make me amost pleasant guy to see on commercials. I’m going to be here a long time so any of you naysayers better get used to it. You can throw names out there, who would not love to coach with Coach Richt. Who is close to 90 wins in 9 years. That is up there with the best programs. OK, Georgia was 7-5 this year; you all tell me how many teams out there can win football games with this: 28 turnover (SEC worst), recover only 2 fumbles (NCAA 4th worst), over 500 penilities (SEC worst) and I loss court. Turnover margin was the second worst in the nation only Miami (Ohio) was worst. Forks, they won 7 games this year maybe 8 with a bowl game in the best football conference in the nation. Give Coach Richt and his coaches some credit, and you bring someone in to make this better it will not take long for UGA to win SEC and national championship like Florida and Alabama are doing today!!!!
