Pooch kicks: Dogs rumor mill working overtime

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

It’s getting kind of hard to keep up with all the folks rumored to be under consideration for Georgia’s defensive coordinator, and the fact is that much of this probably is pure speculation. Let’s see, so far I think the names I’ve heard the most are Bud Foster, Kevin Steele, Ellis Johnson, Kirby Smart, Dick Bumpas, Manny Diaz, Tommy Tuberville, Tyrone Nix, Bob Sanders and Brian VanGorder. And there are all sorts of unconfirmed reports of various names on that list being spotted in the vicinity of Athens.

Van Gorder, the former Georgia DC, says he’s happy with the Atlanta Falcons and isn’t interested in the UGA job, but Twitter rumormeister David Pollack, one of VanGorder’s former star players, isn’t buying it. Tweeted Pollack: “To everyone, VanGorder has a job so he can’t say he is interested. He is in the mix, believe it.”

Whether that’s true or not, I think Mark Richt and Damon Evans should scratch VanGorder off the list (if he’s on it) because a) he already quit this job once before and b) the guy changes jobs like some folks change cars. Even if VanGorder wanted to return to Athens, chances are if he were hired that we’d be doing this dance again in a year or two.

I still lean toward Alabama’s Smart, a former Georgia player, though I’m not sure what might lure him into a somewhat less than lateral move unless it’s the fact that as long as he’s working under Nick Saban, he’s not going to get the credit for the Tide’s defensive efforts. Saban reportedly doesn’t even let him talk to the press.

Still, it’d probably take major bucks to lure Smart. And Buck Belue thinks UGA should pay whatever it takes. Says Buck: “Why hitch the wagon to Smart? Because he’s the perfect fit. A Georgia guy. Studied defense under Saban. He’s young and energetic. He can recruit. This is a no-brainer. Go get him.”

Meanwhile, the well-connected Pollack, who tweeted Willie Martinez’s impending departure last weekend before the Tech game, says he’s hearing that assistant head coach/defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, the only survivor of Richt’s defensive coaching purge, is leaving on his own (as many have expected since he’s working without a contract). But, Pollack hedges, “I don’t know anything for sure.”

Odds are, though, that whoever is named Georgia’s new DC will have a clean slate to work with in terms of staff, and the Dogs will need a new recruiting coordinator.

OFF-FIELD PROBLEMS

The news that freshman defensive end Montez Robinson was arrested again Thursday in connection with an alleged fight with a female student, coming a few days after his arrest on an apparently related alcohol charge, adds perspective to those rumors back at midseason about the Indiana native being homesick and unhappy in Athens.

The facts in the case aren’t clear, since the alleged victim, Armita Didehvar, has told The Red and Black student paper that witness reports that Robinson slammed her into a trash can “are not true. … We just had an argument. Witnesses just blow things up.” But Robinson, who police believe also smashed the taillights of Didehvar’s car the night he was arrested for underage possesion of alcohol, obviously is a troubled young man who’s probably going to at least lose some playing time to suspension out of all this.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Robinson won’t be able to get back on track and have a successful playing career for the Bulldogs. But he needs to get his act straightened out. Any more trouble with the law and Richt ought to suggest he find another place to play football.

Seems to me anyone that can keep the defensive players out of jail would be a good pick.

Do the Athens police still have Richt`s credit card to use to bail the players out?

I like Smart or Mushchamp as co #1 choices. They are Bulldogs and know what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog. They are young and energetic. They have been DC’s at the highest levels of college football. I could easily see them as a successor to Richt. It will take a lot to bring them home……

Haha, you Jerry’s kid, I mean bammers. You are so sore because you live in a second rate state and you have to recruit most of your football team from out of state where you can compete. Georgia makes, annually, around 1/4 more in revenue than bammer. We have better everything, and plus Kirby is a Dawg. If we want him, we get him, CHUMPS!! GO DAWGS!!

I don’t think they can get Kirby Smart. I heard that he wants to pair up with Mike Bobo and Will Muschamp at Texas. That could be a good team with Muschamp as Head coach, Bobo as offensive coordinator and Smart as defensive coordinator.

Why would Muschamp leave “coach in waiting” @ Texas, to be DC @ UGA?
Why would Smart leave Bama as a DC to go to UGA when he was on Richt’s staff previously?
Why would Tuberville, an established HC, take a step back to be a DC anywhere?
Why would Gruden leave MNF to be a DC in college?

I know probably a half dozen people who have made lateral, or less moves to “go home.” To say Smart would never make the move to UGA is delusional on the part of whoever writes it. Bama was 6-6 two years ago and lost to Utah last year. Saban hasn’t won jack yet. Bear’s record and Stallings record are their records today is Dec. 4, 2009 and Saban hasn’t won even an SEC title yet.

December 4th, 2009

Just like a Bammer fan to bring up the past. If you’re going to insult our intelligence you may want to get your own grammar right. Here’s for your 12 “national championships”.

1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn’t exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC.

1926 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with 3 other teams with equal or better records! Once again it is the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1941 that awards it!

1930 National Championship- The Davis poll says that Bama tied Notre Dame for NC this year. This was the only one to award it to Bama. Notre Dame was named NC in 6 polls! Parke Davis is another retroactive system! He (an individual, not an organization) did his in 1933!

1934 National Championship- Alabama says they share this with two other teams. The awarders are Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus. Dunkel was an individual who came up with his own system. Williamson was a geologist who came up with his own system. Football Thesaurus first appeared in 1946!

1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year.

1961 National Championship- Finally a legitimate NC. One poll didn’t give it to Bama though.

1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl.

1965 National Championship- The AP gave this to Bama. That year there were three teams with better records than Bama. Bama 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0.

1973 National Championship- AP puts Bama 4th after their bowl game loss. Bama claims a NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. There were 3 teams with better records than Bama that year. The embarrassment of naming Alabama number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games.

1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC.

1979 National Championship- Their second legitimate NC. Their first Unanimous NC.

1992 National Championship- Their third legitimate NC. Their second Unanimous NC.

You can see why people ridicule Bama fans when they talk about 12 NCs. The early ones were awarded by individuals years after the games were played. These weren’t consensus polls but NCs awarded by people that had their own formula for determining champions. Some NCs where given before bowl games that Bama lost. Using Alabama logic, Auburn could claim four national championships. But when Bammers brag they like to say they have twelve and Auburn has one. How silly. The NCAA recognizes 6 NCs for Bama and there are only two NCs that Bama has unanimously. You can’t find an Auburn site claiming four national championships but there are plenty Bama sites claiming twelve.

I mentioned Chuck Amato a few weeks ago and got slapped silly on the blog. Donnan did discuss him yesterday as an exception to the rule that HC’s don’t step down to lower positions. But he’s a position coach-plus at FSU. I think that say a lot about his qualifications.

Why would Bud Foster make a lateral move?

CMR has seen his results and style of play, and worked with him when UGA invited VT D staff to Athens last summer (to figure out GT offense). So he is a known entity. But he is also in a great situation now.

I thought about the Kirby Smart wish for the day and you know, if he wants to be a head coach, and he does, he would be better off at UGA. He could be THE MAN at Georgia as far as the Defense is concerned. It’s been so bad the last 2 years, Hell almost anyone could improve it. He’s a hero if he turns it around, not peeking out from around the corner while Saban gloats. There is a chance Mark leaves to be a missionary or something…………..or, whan FSU fires Jimbo, and they won’t give him much time, he might end up back there, and Kirby is our man…..Think about all that…..

About new coaches- do not ever let the cost enter the equation after what the Vols paid to get their new staff. You get what you pay for in this world and I for one who gets screwed for tickets everytime is willing to pay the price for an effort every Sat. that makes my 285 mi. (one way) trip worth it. I say screwed because to have season tickets you must pay the min. $400 per ticket extorion fee for the season or go out and pay the after market prices which range from double to ten fold the face price, but I’ll pay it if I know the team will put out the effort they are capable of doing

Tuberville coming to UGA as defensive coordinator wouldn’t be that big of a stretch. Galen Hall has had a great career as an assistant after being a successful head coach in the 80s. Tubs would bring a certain presence that Martinez lacked and would be a good fit if he and Richt can get along.

Smart would be worth a shot, but is an unproven commodity in my opinion. Bud Foster, Ellis Johnson and Tyrone Nix would all be great choices. Agree with the comments about BVG – a great coach but wanders too much. He would nothing more than a stop-gap.
