Pooch kicks: Dogs rumor mill working overtime

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

It’s getting kind of hard to keep up with all the folks rumored to be under consideration for Georgia’s defensive coordinator, and the fact is that much of this probably is pure speculation. Let’s see, so far I think the names I’ve heard the most are Bud Foster, Kevin Steele, Ellis Johnson, Kirby Smart, Dick Bumpas, Manny Diaz, Tommy Tuberville, Tyrone Nix, Bob Sanders and Brian VanGorder. And there are all sorts of unconfirmed reports of various names on that list being spotted in the vicinity of Athens.

Van Gorder, the former Georgia DC, says he’s happy with the Atlanta Falcons and isn’t interested in the UGA job, but Twitter rumormeister David Pollack, one of VanGorder’s former star players, isn’t buying it. Tweeted Pollack: “To everyone, VanGorder has a job so he can’t say he is interested. He is in the mix, believe it.”

Whether that’s true or not, I think Mark Richt and Damon Evans should scratch VanGorder off the list (if he’s on it) because a) he already quit this job once before and b) the guy changes jobs like some folks change cars. Even if VanGorder wanted to return to Athens, chances are if he were hired that we’d be doing this dance again in a year or two.

I still lean toward Alabama’s Smart, a former Georgia player, though I’m not sure what might lure him into a somewhat less than lateral move unless it’s the fact that as long as he’s working under Nick Saban, he’s not going to get the credit for the Tide’s defensive efforts. Saban reportedly doesn’t even let him talk to the press.

Still, it’d probably take major bucks to lure Smart. And Buck Belue thinks UGA should pay whatever it takes. Says Buck: “Why hitch the wagon to Smart? Because he’s the perfect fit. A Georgia guy. Studied defense under Saban. He’s young and energetic. He can recruit. This is a no-brainer. Go get him.”

Meanwhile, the well-connected Pollack, who tweeted Willie Martinez’s impending departure last weekend before the Tech game, says he’s hearing that assistant head coach/defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, the only survivor of Richt’s defensive coaching purge, is leaving on his own (as many have expected since he’s working without a contract). But, Pollack hedges, “I don’t know anything for sure.”

Odds are, though, that whoever is named Georgia’s new DC will have a clean slate to work with in terms of staff, and the Dogs will need a new recruiting coordinator.

OFF-FIELD PROBLEMS

The news that freshman defensive end Montez Robinson was arrested again Thursday in connection with an alleged fight with a female student, coming a few days after his arrest on an apparently related alcohol charge, adds perspective to those rumors back at midseason about the Indiana native being homesick and unhappy in Athens.

The facts in the case aren’t clear, since the alleged victim, Armita Didehvar, has told The Red and Black student paper that witness reports that Robinson slammed her into a trash can “are not true. … We just had an argument. Witnesses just blow things up.” But Robinson, who police believe also smashed the taillights of Didehvar’s car the night he was arrested for underage possesion of alcohol, obviously is a troubled young man who’s probably going to at least lose some playing time to suspension out of all this.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Robinson won’t be able to get back on track and have a successful playing career for the Bulldogs. But he needs to get his act straightened out. Any more trouble with the law and Richt ought to suggest he find another place to play football.

It is a lateral move for K. Smart. If he wants a head position in the next few years, the UGA job would give him greater street cred- coaching without Saban holding his hand.

Also, moving to UGA has an added benefit- he can leave the state of Alabama.

All the talk about which school has more NC titles comes from unemployable high school drop outs that cheer for ANY SCHOOL that is in the top 4 or 5. They did not attend college or if they did it was likely a JC in south Atlanta or Perimeter College for 6 years and have earned one year worth of legit college credits. Their mom supports them. They pull for ANY school that is hot, because they think it MAKES THEM look good at their local mall. USC or Syracuse or Ohio State or Illinois, Oklahoma, or Bama or Florida or LSU or ANY SCHOOL that is hot. It is fun for them to “gig” a UGA or ANY GOOD school with a 7-5 or even a 10-3 record or short of the so called NC ……………..a loser school they say. Heck, that is easy ……….nothing invested in ANY school, so why not gig em??? Morons is what they are. Obamarons.

UGA is what it is and we grads LOVE the university for tons and tons of non football reasons, you idiots. Same is true with KY grads, Auburn grads and Ole Miss grades and MSU grads and others. We have INVESTED part of our lives. Family tradtions are fromed over decades. I am in my 60s and we party with our kids that are uGA folks. THIS IS WHY we bleed red and black or orange and blue or crimson and such. Tradition, FRIENDS and GREAT memories is what bonds TRUE UGA fans.

Uga, class of 71 & 73

PS You know, these idiots, so hung up on so called NC reasons to pull for a school. are the same morons that love Michael Vick, I suspect.

Gator Fans get real!! I have many Florida friends and they are very nervous about our new coordinator and what it will mean in the coming years. Georgia will be back and if I had to bet with a ton of money thrown at him Smart could make the change. I understand that Sabin is a total dictator and the chance to return home and work for a decent boss may prove important.

One last thing …………..to anyone over the age of 40, we remember Bear and his boys at Bama in the 60s and the 70s. Their names are lengedary to even UGA folks. If we lost to Alabama, our players went up to him to be near him and to speak to him like today’s moron Obamarons do. Bear at least had class and substance, unlike The JOKER and his W House social secretary.

Who is saying that Nick Saban is a bad boss? Is that just people’s perception or is that reality. Either way, Kirby clearly doesn’t mind working for him because this is his second stint with Saban after being with him in LSU. Personally I think Smart has a good thing going on at Alabama, and he only worked for Richt one season. Considering that he has been with Saban longer, is it fair to say that Smart prefers Saban’s style of management/running a program over Richt’s?

I’m a big fan of Rodney Garner, but his exit could be for the best. It would allow the new DC to have more input as to how he wants to assemble his new defensive staff. That makes the new DC job more attractive to potential candidates because the DC can bring in guys who understand his philosophy/system. Also, imagine being the new assistant coaches and you’re all supposed to be equals but Garner’s been at the job for many years and is much closer to Richt. Awkward situation. That could make guys uneasy.

Coach Saban has been very complementary of what Kirby has done this year. He’s said it on numerous occasions. The fact is that Smart appreciates what Saban has done for him. And he rewards that with loyalty. That’s why I don’t see Kirby going back to UGA

No program has a more exaggerated sense of its place in the universe that Mutt U. I’ve been chuckling all week at this list of big names that the Mutleys think they can bring to the Classic City.
Comical. Bringing in a “big name” hired gun to run the defense is a sign of decline in an established program. My bet is that Richt will bring in somebody that most people have never heard of.

We’ve taken the annual recruiting rankings on Rivals.com from 2005 to 2009, averaged them for each team, and come up with our own recruiting rankings. Based on recruiting alone — yes, we know there are other factors — there are expectations for on-field performance this season.
Here’s who is meeting them, beating them, or missing them so far:

How the SEC should look —
It’s not that different, based on the recruiting averages. Florida and Alabama should be on a collision course for Atlanta
But there are a few caveats.

Georgia should be challenging Florida for the East title, not challenging to become bowl eligible.
The underachievers —

Start with USC. The Trojans won two recruiting national titles, finished in the recruiting top 10 all five years and signed more five-star prospects (21) than Alabama and LSU combined. Yet losses to Washington and Oregon knocked Pete Carroll’s Trojans out of the national hunt.

USC certainly isn’t alone. Georgia is trying to stay at .500 despite the fourth-best crop over the same period.
