Bulldog Bites: Bowl tickets on sale Sunday night

Will the Dogs go bowling in Atlanta or Shreveport? (UGA Sports Communications)

Will the Dogs go bowling in Atlanta or Shreveport? (UGA Sports Communications)

Atlanta? Shreveport? We’ll find out Sunday evening.

I’m hoping for the Chick-fil-A Bowl but recognize there were times this season when the Dogs looked like they’d be lucky to make it to the Independence Bowl.

I noticed the other day when I wrote about how Shreveport is not a popular destination among SEC teams, some defender of the Louisiana city took umbrage in the comments. Hey, I’ve got nothing against Shreveport itself. But its bowl, in its last year of a tie-in with the SEC, doesn’t generate much buzz. Though whenever I hear the Independence Bowl mentioned, I think of a time back in the 1990s when I was at a UGA baseball game and a guy sitting behind me, who did a dead-on impression of Ray Goff, kept drawling, “Dadburnit, Vince, I like Shreveport!”

Anyway, whichever bowl the Dogs get, the athletic association has announced that tickets will be available to the general public beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday online via the ticket office Web site. Fans also can order bowl tickets by calling 1-877-542-1231 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. All ticket requests will be filled in the order in which they are received, subject to availability.

All Hartman Fund donors will receive the number of tickets to the bowl they requested during the pre-order process and also will receive priority on ticket assignments based on their cumulative donation score, the athletic association says.

The Dogs will be making their 45th bowl game appearance. Georgia currently has a 25-16-3 bowl record. This will be the Bulldogs’ ninth straight bowl appearance under Mark Richt.

SUPPORT BUTLER

All-American Drew Butler, who leads the nation in punting, is considered the leading candidate for the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation’s top punter. The winner will be announced on ESPN’s College Football Awards, televised starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday. ESPN is conducting a straw poll online as to who should win the award. To show your support for Butler, go here and vote.

GEORGA VS. GEORGIA TECH AGAIN

The Lady Bulldogs take on Tech’s women’s basketball team at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens in a game that will be televised regionally on CSS and carried on radio in Athens via AM 960 The Ref. The game will be the first of a school-record 14 regular-season TV appearances for the Lady Dogs this season.

Georgia, ranked No. 13 in the AP poll and No. 16 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, is 7-0 so far this season, while Tech, ranked 23rd in the AP poll, is 5-1. This will be the first time both teams have entered their matchup ranked in the AP poll.

Georgia leads the series 28-3, including an 11-0 mark at Stegeman Coliseum. Tech won 57-42 last year in Atlanta.

Go Dogs!

The latest scoop on the UGA search for a defensive coordinator. Richt did make a call to Van Gorder and as expected he declined. Now the #1 target is going to be Kirby Smart. Sources say he will go hard after Smart and if that doesn’t work out here is a list of potential candidates Georgia will talk with. Vic Koenning DC Kansas st., Reggie Herring (linebackers coach dallas cowboys), Tyrone Nix Ole Miss DC, Manny Diaz MTSU DC, Ellis Johnson ( assistant head coach clemson), Kevin Steele Clemson DC. What do you guys think about these candidates?

Does anyone know the final total of how many UGA players were arrested this week? And how many UGA felons will be released on parole to travel to Shreveport?

Hey Jason – I don’t know anything about UGA football. I know more than you will ever know. I agree a change had to be made and I love Coach Richt. But anybody knows that if the Dawgs had of had the same business like attitude they had against Tech this year things would have been different. Why all of a sudden do say nobody smiles on the sidelines until the final horn. I’ve watched the dancing, smiling and clowning around on the sidelines for 2 and half year when games were not nearly decided. I think Coach Richt just tried too hard to be a players’ coach. His first year he made Tony Gilbert cut his hair and told him he better not see it out from his helmet. This may be a little thing but it carries alot of weight. Don’t question my knowledge of UGA football unless you know your facts Jason.

The wire services are reporting that the Shreveport police are already staffing up to handle the drunken thugs and goons from UGA. The Motel 6 is requiring a $1,000 security deposit to cover the damage caused by UGA fans. Have fun, everyone.

Hey SamD – I went to Shreveport back in the 80’s with the Dawgs. The authorities loved having the Dawgs. Said they were some of the best football fans and the Team was welcomed anytime. By the way there was a mugshot of you at the station there. Damn your ugly now and you sure were ugly then.

The voice of truth and reality has returned. Petty is the new word to study class. Yes, the vast majority of GT fans search for petty excuses. You can make all the excuses you want but the results are in. UGA defeated GT. We defeated your highly ranked team in your own stadium. The vast majority of the excuses have little to no validity. Our best player did not play in the game. The lucky excuse is self-indulgent at best. I heard one delusional fan saying they would win 8 out of 10 games. I will win the lottery if I had the winning numbers too. The reality is that the results do not reveal that believe. Check out the last ten games and you will see that belief is just delusions of grandeur. Yes, that GT fan is full of bull feces. Then I read a GT fan attacking UGA recruiting. Why would GT care? That is just an inferiority complex in action. I could care less who GT signs. I don’t care if they are 1 stars or 5 stars because that is nothing more than recruiting propaganda. What was the Dwyer kid rated coming out of high school? How many yards did he get in the game? That argument does not hold water either. I am still amazed at the number of GT fans reading UGA blogs. That is sad. Then we hear the typical academic excuses. If your players are so vastly intellectually superior, you could devise a scheme to defeat the Dawgs. It didn’t happen. Do the math. The Dawgs dominated the game. Your defense was non-existent. Our very average running game dominated the game. This was a football game and not a chess match. It was revealed last Saturday that the SEC is vastly superior to the ACC. Your two best teams were defeated by average SEC teams. Yes, your conference championship game should be called the below average SEC championship. The results prove that the ACC is a very weak conference. With the national title coming to a SEC team again this year, why don’t we just save time and declare the national champ after the SEC title game. Ask Ohio State about the dominance of the SEC. At that point, we hear the pathetic wait until basketball season claim. Why not gymnastics, tennis, baseball, equestrian, swimming, and soccer? In typical GT fashion, they manipulate results to serve their petty justifications. Try winning back to back games and then we will debate the issues. At this time, you excuses have no meaning. 30 – 24 speaks for itself. In terms of the coaching deal, we defeat GT and fire some of the coaches. That tells you just how little defeating GT means to UGA. Defeating GT is just a given. We will bring in great coaches and continue the dominance. For the future, all our elite talent is extremely young. Your elite talent are upperclassmen. Give up now because it’s only going to get worse. Go DAWGS

frank james, well is it the players or has the CMR gone soft? Yes there are discpline problems, but the HC is the one who got lax. Funny thing about that gatorade incident, that was alot mor fire than earlier in the game when Gamble slammed the kid 10 yrds out of bounds. I’m not harping on the undiscplined players. You stated it was the players. My guess it is the coaches and the players. More so, the coaches (mainly CMR) who let the undiscpline start in the first place. I just don’t like the fact that you seemed to want to throw the players under the bus. I think all should be held accountable, all the way down to the water boy.

frank james, I am just glad CMR finally made a move to right some of the obvious wrongs the past couple of years. Truth be told CWM should have never been promoted in the first place, but hindsight is 20/20. He was to inexperienced and also obvious way in over his head.

So Martinez and the other two losers decline to coach the bowl game. What a surprise! Put yourself above the players welfare at all times – right?

Proof positive they needed to go – thanks Marti, any remorse previously felt for you and the other two has vanished and your chances at landing a decent job just dropped even further.

You actually did us another favor. Regardless of how well or poorly the Defense performs in the bowl game it’s GOT to be better than their performance under YOU!

Fla Dawg,
I missed it somehow. A friend of mine in Bama just sent it to me. The rumors going around out of Athens are unbelievable. I even heard Coach T would be there for two years until CMR’s wife finished nursing school and they could go on a mission trip..I mean just crazy things.
I know that whatever CMR does he will do thoughtfully and prayerfully and for what he thinks is best for the UGA Program.

One nice thing about being a UGA fan is that for years after the players leave, fans can see them and chat with them as they do the scattered-and-smothered in Waffle Houses all over the south. The kind-hearted owner of Waffle House is a Tech alum, and he hires these thugs and morons even when no one else will.

It’s enough to bring tears to your eyes. :-)

JASON – Look at my post at 9:11a.m. and I said that I felt Coach Richt was to blame for the lack of discipline. I also believe it led to the players not performing to the best of their ability for the assistant coaches. If you had the right leadership from players like a David Greene or Pollock even if the discipine had of gotten lax they would have chewed some tail. My point was why do we wait until the Tech game to say no smiling on the sidelines. Where did I blame the players in my post at 9:11 a.m.?

Why would CWM, CJJ and CJF coach the bowl game? Even though the results were bad. I’m sure these men put all of their efforts and talents into making the defense successful this year. They have all acted in a professional and classy manner at UGA. Why would they want to subject themselves further to the lunatic fringe of our fan base.

It’s okay to simply put the results of our defense and say that it’s not good enough for UGA and because of these results changes need to be made. However, it’s not okay to hurl insults at coaches who were trying their best and it just didn’t work out. These coaches wanted for UGA to be successful more than the fans did. These coaches are the ones that spent 20-30 hours a week with the players and have gotten to know them closely. Things didn’t work out and these coaches paid with their jobs but they don’t deserve the personal insults hurled at them. Coaches can coach to the best of their ability but if you have players that won’t listen then it’s all for naught. I’m not saying this is the case but we don’t know yet.

Hey “richtisthenewfulmer”…

Better stick with your job at the Varsity and leave the spelling to intelligent people, like Georgia grads.

The word is “loser,” not “looser.” You know, like, Techies are real LOSERS.

“Loose” means not tight. Like, Techies should never be let LOOSE on a football field against the mighty Georgia Bulldogs because the bumblebees are sure to come up LOSERS.

Now, get back to your studies on the color of concrete.
