What do you think of Martinez’s ouster?

Willie Martinez

Willie Martinez

It’s official now. Willie Martinez is out. Look for more details coming on ajc.com. In the meantime, what do you think?

TWO MINUTE DRILL …

I like the quote that ESPN’s Ivan Maisel had from South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson to explain the ACC’s two division champs, Georgia Tech and Clemson, losing to midlevel SEC teams: “That conference is really down, especially in the area of the box, offensive and defensive line play,” Johnson said of the ACC. “It’s just not very good. I thought [before the game with Clemson] we were a lot better than they were up front, and we were.” …

The Football Writers Association of America named the Dogs as its national team of the week for the Bulldogs’ upset of then-No. 7 Georgia Tech. Georgia beat out Mississippi State (which upset Ole Miss) and West Virginia (which beat rival Pitt) for the honor. …

Retired UGA Gym Dogs coach Suzanne Yoculan, who knows a thing or two about winning, offers her opinion on why Georgia was able to beat Georgia Tech in football. The Dogs had the psychological edge, she says. …

UGA tennis legend Dan Magill writes that he and his weekly doubles partner, former Bulldogs football coach Jim Donnan, were talking recently about Athens native John Kasay’s long run in the pros and Donnan asked how many Athens boys have played in the NFL. Magill’s answer is nine. You can probably think of at least three of them easily: Fran Tarkenton, Jake Scott and Andy Johnson. Do you know the others? The answer is here.

It’s the right call. Bobo ain’t exactly got it going on either, but you can’t change everything in one year. I think special teams coach Fabris might have been as much a problem as CWM so i’m glad to see that change too.

now just gotta pony up and bring in some proven (expensive) talent.

I wish each coach the best. I’m sure they’ll land on their feet. There were a LOT of good times under this staff. I trust Coach Richt in all things.

This is the right call on Martinez and just as importantly Fabris. Any observer of our team could see that. Then Janzek the LB coach, yep we did underachieve big time at LB this year too.

All 3 are the correct decisions.

Those three guys had to go. Especially Jancek. As bad as the D has been, the linebackers have been AWFUL since BVG left.

Good move by CMR. I’m sure Willie, Fabris and Janceck are all good guys, but the numbers do not lie. The way our defense has played the past 2 season is unacceptable at UGA. I wish them luck.

Sorry that anybody loses their jobs. But it was time and needed to be done. The sooner the better. The special teams coach really needed to go. He was awful. Rodney Garner for DC!! And before I forget, 30-24 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I’ll cut Bobo some slack. He had to replace Stafford, Moreno and Massoquoi and lost his best tackle first game of the year two years in a row. Martinez lost Asher Allen from last year’s D. Also, dogs offense put up over 30 points several times this year despite Cox’s awful interception totals.

Don’t forget Mike BOBO as well. He needs to go. CMR needs to look down at Tallahassee and see a contract doesn’t mean job security. Bowden had one for 2010 and it didn’t eman a thing. He better clean up the entire staff before he has to put his house on the slow real estate market

Holding on to recruits now is the big challenge. With Martinez on the road recruiting, my guess is he stays on somehow in a non-coaching position. Why else would he be on the road?

Good luck to the three of them. I’m sure they tried hard. Willie, thank you for helping us to silence the nerd herd again. If that is your legacy, then it is a really good one.

I told everyone that Coach Richt would do the right thing at the right time. This week including the Tech game, is becoming Richt’s shining moment to prove once again that he is a top notch coach and person.

I’m dam glad we have him.

I wish those coaches well, but glad that it was done and that it was not just Martinez. We need wholesale changes on defense and this is the way that it will be accomplished. I hope that we spend the money to bring in 4 new coaches in their stead; we need a linebackers, secondary, defensive-ends, and Defensive Coordinator. I don’t think the DC needs to be a position coach too… I would really like to see us bring in the guy from either TCU, Boise State, or Tunuta.

the offense was more of an issue this year than the defense…turnovers, poor communication on the field, poorly executed plays, poor timing on routes and hand-offs…it wasn’t just a qb issue, it was an entire offensive issue…the defense at least kept it from being too ugly…

I am sure these guys are all good people, and probably will do good somewhere elsee, they simply just are not the elite level of coaches we need or expect. Good luck to them in the future. I say we get on the phone with Van Gorder, and don’t forget Tommy Tuberville visited with CMR a month or so ago!!!

Cox had 22 TD passes with no running game until the last 4 weeks of the season. Some of that you might can pin on Bobo but some of it belongs to the OL and to Cox himself.

Bobo deserves a shot with Murray although I can see Richt whispering in his ear like with Greene for the next 4 years and being a lot more involved with the play calling.

The facts don’t lie. Poor defense (in the second half) caused the loss to GT last year and the collapse against UK this year dropped the Dawgs from Tampa to Shreveport. There was nothing else Richt could do.
