Dogs’ bowl hopes could ride on … Jackets

(Clemson University)

(Clemson University)

It looks as if Georgia’s hopes of landing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl rather than Shreveport’s Independence Bowl might be in the hands of in-state rival Georgia Tech.

Normally, many (if not most) Bulldogs fans would be rooting for the Clemson Tigers in Saturday’s ACC championship game with the Yellow Jackets.

ESPN.com’s Chris Low reports, however, that the Chick-fil-A Bowl is waiting on the ACC title game before finalizing its decision on whether to take Tennessee or Georgia for its SEC slot. A Tennessee-Virginia Tech matchup is very likely, Low says. But if Clemson loses to Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game, they likely would wind up in the Chick-fil-A since the Gator Bowl, which usually gets the ACC championship loser, wants to take retiring Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles.

And if Clemson winds up in Atlanta, Low says, the Chick-fil-A Bowl might decide to pair the Tigers with Georgia, a longtime rival. That would indeed be a hot ticket.

So what does that do to your feelings about the ACC title game? Can you suppress the gagging reflex and bring yourself to pull for the Jackets if it helps the Dogs’ chances of playing in Atlanta?

I have no problem pulling for the other in-state school. I have a close friend who went to Tech the same time I went to UGA. He is gracious in victory and humble in defeat. Well he has had a lot of practice with the being humble.

Bo Williams

UGa and Clemson would be a great bowl matchup for the Independence Bowl. Both teams, which are good teams, not great, most likely will be 7-5, bpth in the second tier teams nationally. You really can’t point to conference standing in determining teams overall standing, since the SEC and ACC are divided into two divisions, in which case a team with a higher conference standing might have that standing by virtue of playing in the weaker division, such as was the case that could be argued vis-a-vis Clemson playing in the weaker Atlantic Division. Maybe because of its success in that division caused Clemson to be over-confident against SCar, although is certainly a good, once again not great, team. That said, any team 8-4 to 7-5 in either the ACC or SEC should be competitive with each other. NCState-SCar, competivitive; UGa-Tech, competitive; Bama-VaTech, competitive. I don’t believe any of these games were decided before mid-way through the 4th quarter, and in most cases, not before the last play. Look, UNC beat both Miami and VaTech (at Tech), then lost to NCState. Look, this is why we watch the games, we really don’t know who is going to win in half the games we play. If you think otherwise, you are a HOMER my friend.

UGA fans sure do talk a lot of smack for a bunch of wannabes who support the most underachieving major college football program in the country.

Think about it: UGA has great facilities, a huge warchest, (literally) rabid fans, and a fantastic recruiting base. Despite all of those formidable advantages, UGA hasn’t won a national title since Herschel still had one personality.

Yeah, the Bulldog Nation whines and snivels about how tough it is to play in the SEC … but that hasn’t prevented Florida, LSU, and Alabama from winning it all.

Face it, folks: UGA’s recent success was the result of Florida and Tennessee temporarily going in the tank. Since then, Urban Meyer has transformed UGA into his own personal female dawg, and Lane Kiffin is doing the same thing.

Heck, Saint Mark Richt couldn’t even win his own division last season with two first-round draft picks. Given their performance this season, the Dawgs had better get used to 7-5. As Lewis Grizzard would say, “Uga is dead, and I don’t feel too good myself.”

But enough negativity. Let’s look on the bright side: I hear that Shreveport is beautiful in December.

FSU?

December 2nd, 2009
2:42 pm

What is all this talk about FSU in the Gator bowl? By rule they cannot possibly be chosen for the Gator Bowl. That would mean they would be chosen over either VT or the loser of the ACC championship game and the rule states “a bowl game can bypass a team in the selection process only if the two teams in question are within one game of each other in the overall ACC standings”. FSU is 3 games back of GT and 2 games back of VT and Clempsun. If GT wins the ACC Championship game, the Gator Bowls only options are VT, Clempsun, BC and Miami (minus the Chickfila bowl choice) and if Clempsun wins then its only GT (or VT, Miami, or BC if Chickfila surpisingly chooses GT). Coach Bowden is out of luck there, however the Champs Sports Bowl would have the option of choosing FSU next.

FSU?,

According to the Gator Bowl’s contract with the ACC, the team only has to invite the ACC title game loser once in four years, which it did with Georgia Tech in 2007. Without speculating on the matchup, Gator Bowl general chairman Dan Murphy told the Times-Union late Monday that it’s the GBA’s interpretation of the contract that the league’s one-loss rule (a team cannot be passed for consideration by an ACC bowl partner for a team more than one loss behind in the conference standings) does not apply if the Gator Bowl decides not to invite the championship game loser.

Dumb Mutts, What if Clemson wins and VT finishes as the highest ranked ACC team? The numbers associated with the Bowls are the round they pick not the ranking in the conf. besides many closed door deals are often made in the Bowl Selection process.

Logan should be given at least a half of playing time at Qb in the game to see if he is an option our if a position change is best for him in 2010 the kid has to much talent not to be on the field somewhere. Coach put the team to work and make the best of where ever the team ends up and get them ready to play in a BCS bowl in 2010. Good luck with the pending staff choices and please make wise choices and dont just go with the company line of promoting from within other than Coach Garner i dont think there is a coordinator among the bunch. Also i would not want anything to take away from the great job that Coach Garner does as a recruiting coordinator maybe it would be in everybodies best intrest to bring a fresh face aka Kirby Smart please come home for Christmas you school needs you.

I hate tech when we play them, but i dont have a problem pulling for them against other ACC teams. Looks better for the dawgs if they beat the ACC champs rather than the runner up.

I hate tech with all my heart, soul, & mind and would NEVER pull for them.

I would rather drive to Shreveport any day of the week than pull for the maggots to win. Shouldn’t be a problem for Clemson to beat them this time around – they almost did when they met earlier this season and tech won on an illegal play. Spiller is going to run all over Coach Johnson’s D just like Washaun Ealey and Caleb King did ALL NIGHT LONG.

Knowing that we smacked the nerds upside the head 30-24 helps.

I think you Muttlanders tend to forget that God has a sense of humor. So please, keep on talking loud and saying nothing.

As someone stated so eloquently, you folks have an elevated view of yourselves.

Enjoy your schadenfreude while you can. It won’t last long.

Go Jackets!!!

I do not care which bowl game UGA goes to. I would hate them to go to the Independence Bowl, since I cannot travel that far with my work schedule and I really wanted to take my Daughter to a Georgia Bowl game for her Birthday. The Papa Johns bowl gets the last SEC pick, but Birmingham is so much closer and the Stadium is so much better than Shreveport. I heard that Tommy Tuberville said on his radio show that Auburn guranteed the Outback Bowl they would sell 30,000 tickets. Im sure nobody cares, but that is against SEC rules.

Go Clemson! I hope Tech never sees a BCS bowl. After keeping Martinez so long Richt deserves to see the small smattering of red and even smaller Iowa State contingency play at the weed eater bowl. God, I hate it for our players though. Sure there will be loads of UGA fans willing to make the drive or pay $924 Delta tix to see that gem in the smallest metro area to host a bowl. Oh well, at least you get casinos and that “unique” blend of East Texas and non-Cajun Louisiana culture if you go. What a joke and embarrassment!

Also, Billy, I seriously doubt Tubbs gives a rat’s a$$ whether AU goes to the Outback or any at all Bowl considering his affiliation there. Did you miss the past year?

How can Auburn go to the Outback bowl over us… They lost to the same Kentucky team at home just as Georgia did, plus Georgia won the heads up game. Makes no sense at all.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Ga Tech also helped out the Dawgs in 1980 when they tied Notre Dame at the end of the year 3-3 and helped Georgia get into the National Championship game.

Tech and Notre Dame have played 32 times, but the Irish will be making their first trip to Atlanta since 1980, when the Yellow Jackets tied then-No. 1-ranked Notre Dame, 3-3.

If Tech really hated the Dawgs to the core they would have done something to purposely lose that game and then #1 Notre Dame would have been playing in the NC game instead of UGA…

So don’t hate the Tech team too much guys…

SORRY!!!!

I just saw on the internet that UGA played Notre Dame and beat them so the tie with Tech did not do anything or it would have just been another opponet.

Please excuse the mistake.

Ok so Tech did not help the Dawgs that year.

Who really cares where the two go to a bowl unless it is a BCS bowl or a playoff system anyway…

2, 3, 5 losses…Neither school wants anything less than Top 10 caliber seasons to be in the thick of it all…

Everything else is just to pad numbers and bowl wins, etc..

Yep Jacketman, replays revealed that Tech had an illegal man on the field for the fake kick and in reality that W should be vacated.

Liz you’re only half right, which is about 75% more right than most “Dawg” fans are, so kudos for that. The play was reviewed and PJ was told that the play would be called as illegal from now on (I think because the receiver never checked in), but there was never a threat of “vacating” the win.

FSU?

December 3rd, 2009
10:44 am

Ok, just to clarify the Gator Bowl situation, if the Peach Bowl chooses VT, then the Gator Bowl by contractual agreement can select FSU over the ACC championship game loser. It is a very loose interpretation of the contract but since the Gator Bowl is a lame duck with the ACC this year, the ACC is not going to fight it. BUT if the Peach Bowl chooses to invite the ACC championship game loser, then the Gator Bowl must invite VT, and the Gator Bowl and Bobby are out of luck.

COACH B

December 3rd, 2009
7:04 pm

As a former defensive coordinator, I can tell you our defensive problems should be equally shared by the offensive and defensive coaches. Too many times our offense turned the ball over in our territory and the offensive scheme looked as if our coaches couldn’t decide what plays to call. True our defense could not generate turnovers, but an offensive staff mired in indecision makes winning equally unlikely because the defense is on the field way too long and we did not have the depth to overcome those offensive miscues. All of this falls squarely at the feet of Mark Richt. He can fire whomever he likes, but the responsibility for this year’s fiasco is his alone. The DAWGS lacked the ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK mode that an offense and defense needs to win consistantly. I’m no fan of Willie and I’ll follow the DAWGS to whatever bowl they go to, but it needed to be said that when something isn’t working, it is the HEAD COACH who makes the changes needed at half-time of a game not when the season is over. Even in the Tech game on our last drive, it seemed we made the decision to “settle” for a field goal instead of continuing to pound the ball at Tech and eat clock. That strategy to “settle” for a field goal is what almost got us beat. We had to rely on a dropped fourth down pass to win a game that we were clearly the better team. We won yes, but I don’t just want to beat Tech, I want to crush them like the insects they are. GO DAWGS!
