Sounds like sour grapes from Tech’s Paul Johnson

Who got punched in the face? (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

Who got punched in the face? (Johnny Crawford / AJC)

I’m off today and just got back from the dentist, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to comment on the latest flap in the Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry.

As you’ve probably seen, Tech coach Paul Johnson, appearing on local radio, dismissed the UGA program that just embarrassed his team Saturday night, asking “What have they done to be the mark for Georgia Tech football? What’s the last thing they won? 1980?”

For Tech, he said, the annual game against the Bulldogs is “not the be all, end all. We’re 1-1.”

And he went on to advise any Tech fan getting a hard time from a Georgia fan to “punch him in the face.”

OK, so now we know that in addition to being a pretty good coach, Paul Johnson is a bit of a jerk. I mean, you’ve really got to go some to make Lane Kiffin sound classy.

Georgia hasn’t won anything since 1980? What, conference championships don’t count? Mark Richt has two of those. Tech hasn’t won one outright since 1990 (when they also won half a national championship). Johnson will get the chance to win his first conference championship this weekend. Though admittedly, it will be somewhat devalued by the fact that both teams playing for the ACC crown were beaten by 7-5 SEC teams.

And what’s this “we’re 1-1″ business? This smacks of the Gators fans who think there was no college football before 1990. Johnson may be 1-1 against Georgia, but his program has been dominated by UGA for most of the past 45 years.

As for a punch in the face, it looked like that’s pretty much what the Jackets got from the Dogs Saturday night.

That’s all I’ve got to say. Feel free to share your views in the comments while I return to my day off.

Paul Johnson and his offense are a joke, it won’t take long before even the weak ACC realizes how to defend it. Hey coach, how do you like playing with Chan Gailey’s recruits?

Put this on the bulletin board for next year’s ass whuppin’. Maybe they should put 1-1 on their rings. Stay classy, coach.

CPJ is the best thing to hit Atlanta since Chan Gailey left. All he does is take heat for his offensive schemes and all they do is win ball games. And the game against Georgia was hardly an embarrassment. Every single player, coach, and fan believed Georgia was going to lose that game from the beginning until the 4th down with a minute to go. Georgia is the mediocre team with the less than mediocre coaching staff.

Yeah, that’s just what PJ needs to do. Tell his Nerd fans to start punching UGA fans. He must not like his fan base much if he wants them to get beat up and walk around looking like Jimmy Clausen after that Dawg fan whip’s that a**. How about every time a Nerd gets on a Dawg Fan’s nerves, they punch PJ in the face.

Your fat redneck self needs to figure out which way it is. Seriously. Hypocrisy at its best.

Wow, you can’t make this stuff up. You don’t usually get soundbites like that from coaches in big media markets. What he fails to mention is that most tech fans punch like limp wristed nancy boys.

Vol”boy” – why do you care? Tennessee hasn’t beaten a ranked team since ‘98. If it wasn’t for Georgia, you’d have beaten nobody at all. By the way, congratulations on making a bowl this year.

sounds to me like Paul “no” Johnson is mad that he didn’t get the UGA job when Mark Richt got it.
UGA fans have never played down the game against GT. This is really sour Grapes.

If you are a prospect deciding between GT and Paul Johnson and UGA and Mark Richt– which one would you rather play for? Johnson’s tirade was irresponsible. If some GT fan cracks the skull of a UGA fan, Johnson will look even worse. Nobody wins when a supposed “leader” makes such an irresponsible comment.

Punch an opposing fan in the face?? Boy, I’m scared now!! And, I am laughing out loud while writing these comments. CPJ is well on his way to allowing UGA beat the Jackets twice by not adequately preparing for Clemson, and worrying about a game that’s history. The Jackets need to focus upon winning on Saturday. A win really would give them a good season. Not great, but certainly a good one. Don’t let anyone fool you, beating UGA is very important to Tech. Remember, if Tech had won on Saturday night, they’d be crowing about a “streak,” which would definitely magnify the win.

Good point SuperB. Not only has CPJ provided the Georgia locker room with bulletin board material for years to come, it’s also given CMR nice recruiting leverage. When you’re trying to convince a kid’s parents which coach will be the better role model for their son, just role the tape.

“not the be all, end all. We’re 1-1.” – Wasn’t it Tech claiming after last year’s victory over the Dawgs their number one goal for the season was to beat Georgia? I love the fact that Tech cares more about beating Georgia than winning their conference championship. They made rings with 45-42 on them for crying out loud! If they make rings commemorating a game that isn’t their “end all, be all”, then I can’t wait to see what they do if they win the ACC. New cars maybe… I’m sure ole turkey neck would think that’s reasonable.

Come on guys this is entertainment. I’m a jacket fan. A lot of you guys are Dawg fans. Hey I love the dawgs too even though I went to tech. Let’s just smile on the entertainment value here. PJ is a great coach. I think MR is too. Very different styles, but both with a schtick. PJ is no nonsense a little blustery. MR is the jesus freak type. It all plays well. Let’s just not get too carried away. Hey the game was good one. It sucked for the that the jackets lost, but isn’t this all fun.

The thing is Paul Johnson realizes UGA, Mark Richt & co. still run this state. Also he has witnessed for two seasons now the consistently poor level of play in the ACC and realizes his team would finish no better than 5th in the SEC East, especially with that gimmicky, high-school offense.

The Dawgs offensive line and RBs showed Coach Johnson what power football is all about on Saturday night, schooled him old school style 30-24 as they ran free in Tech’s backfields all night long!
