Washaun Ealey ran the way Georgia backs are supposed to run. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Everything in the Bulldog Nation isn’t exactly the way we want it, but let’s put off that discussion for at least a couple of hours. A win like Saturday’s is worth savoring just a bit more.
The Dogs’ honor roll for the Tech game is quite lengthy. The entire offensive and defensive lines deserve to be singled out. Washaun Ealey and Caleb King ran like Georgia backs are supposed to run. Reshad Jones redeemed himself from a year earlier with probably the best game he’s ever played.
And let’s not forget Mike Bobo. No, he didn’t call a perfect game. That attempted short pass on third-and-4 on the Dogs’ last drive, forcing an unsuccessful long field goal attempt, wasn’t the best choice. It was a time and place to just give it to the backs again, going for it on fourth down, if necessary. And in the second half, when Tech crowded the line to slow down Georgia’s run game, it’s curious that Bobo didn’t take at least a couple more shots downfield.
But overall, it was a masterful performance by Bobo. He went against his natural inclination to maintain “balance” at all costs and ran the ball a whopping 44 times in the game, which was the perfect approach to playing Paul Johnson’s team.
On defense, Willie Martinez stymied the Jackets for most of the first half. The DL continued to stuff the Jackets up the middle in the second half, though Tech has success challenging the Dogs on the corners. There’s no way of knowing whether the Dogs could have held if the ball hadn’t been dropped on the Jackets’ last fourth down play, but that’s fortunately not something we had to find out.
And on the plus side, the Dogs finally won the turnover battle, which usually means winning the game. We could drive ourselves crazy with “what if’s” about how the season could have turned out if Georgia had not been so terrible in turnover ratio most of the season, but on this night it worked out.
Special teams was the least successful aspect of Georgia’s game against Tech. When Blair Walsh went for the end zone on kickoffs, he got touchbacks. When he went with his coaches’ preferred directional kicks, the results were not as successful. And the kickoff coverage was still not very good.
Overall, though, the Dogs played probably their best overall game of the season against one of their toughest foes. And, for once, they didn’t beat themselves. Talent has never really been a question this season for the Bulldogs; it’s been execution and mental toughness. On Saturday, they played the way they should have played all year.
On the surface, a 7-5 season isn’t anything to celebrate. But it’s exponentially more satisfying than 6-6, especially when that seventh win brings the Governor’s Cup back to Athens.
Well done, Dogs!

L-Dawg – it’s just a little awkward that you announce your “retirement” from posting and yet you continue to post. Not sure why you felt the need to announce a retirement from posting in the first place, not like this is anywhere near a real job, but either let your ‘yes be a yes’ or avoid the dramatic announcements in the future.

Loved the game and was quite impressed with the improved playcalling of Mike Bobo. Wonder what finally lit a fire under his butt?
The defense showed improvement, especially along the interior and Reshad Jones along with the d-tackles deserve special praise. I still wasn’t too thrilled with the way our DB’s, with the exception of Jones, were blocked too easily on the perimeter and basically got manhandled by tech receivers at inopportune times. That along with the kickoff coverage were the only real demerits for this game.
The SEC really is head and shoulders above everyone else and isn’t showing any signs of taking a step back, even in this relatively down conference year. All tech fans have to console themselves with now is a possible ACC title win in the Anti-climax bowl. I’d much rather be mid-tier in the SEC than champs in a league equivalent to the Colonial or Sunbelt.

Ok,
Now let’s make some positive changes.
Although I did not see it I was told Martinez was crying at then end of the GT Game and being hugged by some of the players. Likely farewell emotions.
His announced departure (I hope he has the class to resign) will be announed within 48 hours.
His replacement will be announed after the Bowl Game.
If there are no changes then Richt is in big trouble next season – it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened. I like Cox and in my opinion he did a decent job this year. But Richt has not one QB ready to take the field next season.
Inexcusable.

Now watch CMR blame everything bad this season on turnovers and penalties, in an effort not to fire soft willie. He is setting the stage for it now. Yes, the turnovers were bad but who was so hard headed not to remove Joe Cox who does not have “big college talent”. Maybe things would have been worse with a different QB but what experience and lessons learned by JC will help UGA now?
Oh and what about last year? huh?

Bill…would love to say we “stymied” them but I just didn’t see it that way. After watching the game again, their drives more fizzled out. We never forced a punt. Were it not for the interception and fumble (one that the “d” can take credit for), the game could have been different. Plus, we left them with a chance to win at the end. We were running all over them but had to take three field goals and missed a fourth. Excited we won and glad to see the running backs get aggressive. I will never understand why PJ chose 4 pass plays at the end. That says alot about what he thought of our secondary.

Incredible running attack Saturday, defense was as good as it had to be. Jones played out of his mind. Period. Great game, and redemption for last year’s goof. Got one pick and almost had another on the deep pass that was incomplete near our goal line late.
Special teams still has a long way to go. Bill, good observation on kick coverage, or more accurately, LACK of it. We’re still giving up 20-30 yards on returns, and teams are starting possessions at midfield instead of at the 20 or deeper. Has anyone else noticed that on kickoffs, Walsh is 5+ yards ahead of the kickoff team when he makes contact? Are we so afraid of going offside that we’re willing to give up an additional 10-15 yards per kickoff because we can’t get downfield in time? What’s up with that??
But all in all, GREAT win over the Bumbles. IT’S GREAT TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDOG!!!!

Good article, Bill. Your team played it’s best all year and the results showed it. Your synopsis here is far more appropriate than trashing Tech’s stadium, fans and student athletes as you did in your previous post. As a lifelong Tech fan and graduate, I have respected UGA’s players and coaches through the years–you’ve had some great teams and been fun to watch. What I despise about Georgia are the fans. Although fewer in number at Bobby Dodd on Saturday evening, those who were there typified the worst of UGA football: restrooms in the North grandstand trashed by people apparently not used to indoor plumbing, loudmouthed drunks jawing and shoving leaving the stadium, and a general lack of sportsmanship following a close, hard-fought game. But you didn’t have to attend the game to see this; just look at the moronic posts by Dog fans on the AJC blogs. Your unranked Bulldogs rose up to beat a (still) Top-10 BCS football team to put a strong finish on a frustrating season. Too bad your fans can’t show the class your team deserves. I wish them well in their bowl, wherever that may be. As for your fans… well, I’m still damn proud to be a Jacket (or nerd, insect or whatever other derogatory term you folks wish to use) when I consider the alternative.

Great win indeed. It was wonderful to see the DAwgS run like they should. So odd, that a team so deep in talent, so deep in ability, just barely hang onto a win. Willies guys did as Ive been expecting them to do since he’s been there. Mike, well, he didnt get in his own way with those sneaky screen passes, Oh MY….. Oh, lets not forget those great 40yrd plus kick and punt returns (oh that was Tech.) While the win was impressive, strong D and O, the overall impact of the season was as last year, disappointing. Looking across the league with all its great coaches only creates bad dreams for us in the future. Georgia is being out-played and more importantly, out-coached at all levels of the game by the premier and not so premier teams. Each year since Willie has been here we have had extreem blowouts at the hands of Flordia, Tennessee, Alabama, and on and on. Defensive penalites, lack of focus, and the inability to get off the field on 3rd down has been a staple of his teams. Mike Bobo’s offense has been just as bad. It looks like we are playing high school football against the rest of the league. Ive always been a Bobo fan. I can remember his last play as a QB in the Cotton Bowl. Gutsy, never quit mentality. But what bothers me most is that it looks like we have only one go to receiver, one go to ball carrier and one set of plays ran from both side of the ball. What the heck, we are suppose to have one of the top 5 recruiting classe each year in the country and all we can come up with is an inside screen to the same wideout, over and over and over again. Come on. The reason we didnt loose Saturday was because we did what we are suppose to do. Control the game and the team we are playing. Mike, sorry, but you need to go with Willie.

Bobo's Tech GamePlan
November 30th, 2009
11:32 am
Bobo did a lot of things RIGHT in this game—-FINALLY!
1) Solid play call mix in 1st half with lots of run calls
2) Good safe low risk passing calls for Cox–we had some drops, and Cox missed a couple of guys–but the calls were low risk
3) Gave the ball to Ealey 20 times–FINALLY–and you got 180+ yards–tip: Keep doing that Richt. Ealey now is averaging MORE than Walker’s 5.29 ypc, Ealey’s at 5.7 ypc for the season.
4) Limit turnovers–only gave up 1 giveaway on offense–another fumble by Caleb King—but it was only 1–this was the key to the game
5) great call on the zone run after Tech’s big play in the 3rd qrtr where they brought the safeties up–King hit it big and took it to the house
6) good plan getting WR’s in open speaces with double moves and pump fakes to limit TO’s.
Bobo’s areas for improvement:
1) got away from the run in the 2nd half on play call mix—Bobo tends to panic and abandon the gameplan at the first sign of stress. He probably thought he would take adavantage of the safeties cheating up. Again, as usual, it didn’t work. Bobo is IN LOVE WITH THE PASSING GAME, as his 2nd half play-calling mix proves. This ALMOST lost us the game.
2) Too many field goals instead of touchdowns due to poor play calling–this should not have been a close game the way our backs were running–just keep calling run plays.
3) Couldn’t scheme to get the ball to Charles–a clear mis-match for Tech’s LB’s–Charles is like a hybird TE/WR, he is impossible for an LB to cover–too much speed.
4) Poor play call to take our Kicker out of field goal range in the 4th–ALMOST cost us the game. 55 yards is tough. Would have like to have seen a safe 4 yard run making it a 47 yard.
The jury’s still out on Bobo’s RB rotation strategy. It worked THIS game, but failed in every loss.
Bobo has shown he IS CAPABLE of calling lots of running plays (at least for one half), and scheming low risk passing plays.

Still Proud to Be a Jacket – selective blindness can be scary. Especially while driving.
Regarding Bobo’s third down pass call that was dropped for a loss – I actually don’t think it’s as bad of a call as most do. Having been gashed up the middle already on the series, it seemed like the right time to switch things up against tech’s defense by going to a high percentage pass play. The only thing, in hindsight, I might’ve done differently, would be to push it to the outside, like a bootleg to the tightend or something of that nature, since they were predictably expecting a play in the interior.

good:
1) Take the toss and elect to take the ball 1st (1st time all year we did that–and we got off to a good start)
2) Practicing Turnover drills–getting those reps worked for the most part (King’s lost fumble)
3) 1st half strategy
4) defensive strategy- make them pass to win–something they could not do–stayed with it to the end–stayed committed
5) fixed the penalty problem
6) won the turnover battle–FINALLY
7) Get 2 takeaways from the D
Bad:
1) Letting Bobo get away from the run in the 2nd half play call mix
2) Sticking to a meaniningless slogan “Finish the Drill” AGAIN- got outscored again in BOTH 3rd and 4th Qrtrt.
3) Going for 55 yard field goal. Should have called a fake, or gone for it on 4th down. Can’t let Tech have the ball back there. That was like a turnover. Too high risk play.

Willie stuck with his gameplan and never wavered—make them pass to beat you. And Tech didn’t.
Willie’s D hasn’t given up a 100 yard rusher ALL SEASON.
Tackling was MUCH improved–got burned on the long pass where the corner tried to arm tackle, and got burned where Dobbs missed a tackle on a run that went for 30.
3rd qrtr was bad for Willie’s D. Tech marched up and down the field. Bobo’s O was clicking and kicking field goals, 1 stop would have put the game away.
2 Takeaways were the key to the game.
Willie outcoached the 2007, 2008, and 2009 #1 Offensive geniuses (Auburn’s Gus, and Tech’s PJ)
Willie has not give up a SINGLE 100 Yard rusher. Richt normally wins over 90% of those games. Not this year.
TO margin killed Georgia in 2009.

If they had done any of your suggestions, and failed, they would still be in the same position in which they ended.
You are correct, however, that he made a bad call – he should have punted – even if the ball went into the endzone Tech would have had to go 80 yards instead of just 65.
But, that is easy for me to say in my 20/20 hindsight!

Bill,
Thanks for your comments regarding both schools have obnoxious fans, all schools do and they represent a small percentage of the whole. For myself, I attended from ‘79-’82 and it was wonderful to crush people all the team but one of my close friends was a huge Tech fan so I’ve always pulled for them when not playing us. It’s better when both schools are playing well and I respect the history.
But where was this team all year? They played with focus, effort and mental/emotional toughness,,,something I thought was most lacking during the OK state game. If Walsh makes that kick against LSU and the penalty is not called on AJ Green, do we still lose to TN next week? Probably. I could have expected this stuff during the Goff years but it’s the most perplexing team ever under Richt. To have those three quarters against Auburn and then the second half against KY? I simply can’t put my finger on it.

In 4 out of 5 of Georgia’s losses, Bobo’s Offense committed 3 or 4 TO’s.
No defensive coordinator in America can win with a Giveaway stat like that.
You have to hang the LSU loss on Willie’s D, no doubt.
The other losses are on Bobo, you can’t give up the ball 3 or 4 times a game against Tenn, Flo, Ok. St., and Kent.

You can’t punt the ball there and give away control of the game to Tech. You have to take that option away from them. A 55 yard field goal is not a high % play.
Getting a 1st down there puts us in range for a 35-40 yard field goal.
Tough call when your kicker is 4-4 from 50+.
But in hindsight, it was a mistake that ALMOST cost Richt the game.

Normally, I would agree that the 55 yarder wouldn’t be the right call but we don’t have a normal FG kicker this year. We have a guy who’s been automatic from 50+ thus far and is the probable Groza award winner. If there’s ever a time to let your star kicker win it for you, then that was it.
That’s not to say that it didn’t make me nervous when we lost yardage on third down because it sure as heck did but Walsh is a stud.

Well, duh – it probably puts us in position to run out most of the clock, while making Tech use up their last two timeouts, too! Losing yardage on third down definitely hurt the prospects of going for it on 4th down, and kicking the field goal (when was the last time you saw a kicker in college kick a 55 yard GAME WINNING field goal?). Going for fake would probably not have worked since they did not rush anyway, as they were thinking “fake” all the way, too. So, my 20/20 hindsight is still the better option!

Some of you EXPERTS who talk Bobo’s offense and Willie’s defense are in a dream world. Football is a TEAM game and all players and coaches have to be on the same page to win. I seriously doubt any of you EXPERTS put one half the hours on your job as these coaches do. All this crap about a bad call on 3rd down by Bobo, what a joke! The game was almost perfectly called with what Tech’s personnel vs. Georgia’s folks. If you think the Dogs can line up and run like that every week in the SEC you are a moron. The coaches did a great job and the players executed the gameplan. Enjoy the win and go back to your non meaningful job!!

What with Willie speculation, Tiger mowing down trees and hydrants and Vick coming back to town, it’s time to savor some famous quotes…..
“This is my house” – Deon Sanders
“This is still my city” – Mike Vick
“This is a private matter” – Tiger Woods
“I did not have sex with that woman” – Bill Clinton
“Michael Vick is a falcon for life” – Mr. Blank
“I will finish the season” – Bobby “Pig Sooey” Petrino
“Willie Martinez is a great coach” – Bob Davies
“Joe Cox gives us the best chance to win” – Mark Richt
“Joe Cox played a fundamentally sound game” – Buck Belue
And the beat goes on and on and on…!

Old Coach and Jeff Dawg are right. Responding to blogs is a lot like voting. Mostly the stupid people do it. The reason Bobo called such a great game is because Tech sucks not because he suddenly found some magic formula. The defense showed up, because the defense showed up. Not because they were coached any better, they just did their job. Martinez has yet to miss a tackle and he certainly didn’t miss the ones on the short pass that went for 75 yards or that reverse. To me maybe the loss of the year that’s on the coaches is at TN. Losing to LSU obviously took a lot out of the team and they weren’t ready to play. Could ANYONE have gotten this bunch ready? I don’t know. But they certainly weren’t. Otherwise between the meltdown by the players against KY and the wonderful officiating against OSU and LSU, I don’t know if any staf in the nation could have done better with the players we had. Pete Carroll always has higher recruiting classes than anyone and you see what kind of year he is having. Bob Stoops recruits as well as we do and you see what kind if year OU is having and they want him to go to ND. Why is it our fans want our coaches to leave? It’s because they have no life.

It’s funny how the defense plays better when we don’t have 4 turnovers and run the ball. They might be related. On the play calling I didn’t have a problem with the screen pass or going for the field goal. Walsh is the best kicker in the country and will end the game there 8 out of 10 tries. I’m not as sold on firing Martinez as everyone else. The players really like him and he can recruit. Maybe a demotion. Great hard fought win. I would like to play VT, miami or clemson in chik fil a bowl. Go Dawgs!

Still Proud to be a Jacket- It’s not fair to put all Bulldog Fans in the same pidgin hole. There are good and bad fans at all schools. I think the biggest problem is the TV time slots giving these fans more time to get tanked and thus behaving badly as a result.
I have been to Grant Field many time for the annual rivalry but one occasion stands out in particular. One of your fans threw a drink on my wife and I and used language that I would use in front of anyone.
On another occasion, Several young Tech fans sitting behind my daughter and I were continuously using such foul language that I had to ask then to stop speaking that way in front of my daughter. The young fan then directed his foul mouth toward me, and if not for intervention by some decent Tech Fans sitting in front of me to set this young man streight, there might have been an unnessessary altercation.
Both of these situations had more to do with alcohol and the fact the UGA had the upperhand in the game at the time. I know fans get frustrated, but to take it out of the opposing fans is foolish.
The problem that I can’t understand is the way your players think it is necessessary to rip our beloved hedges out of the ground everytime they win a game at Sanford Stadium. ( Which is not very often) This behavior is not alcohol induced and is nothing short of vandalism! They should act with sportmanship themselves and enjoy and celebrate their win but conduct themselves in the manner You expect from us.

BRADDAWG,
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU ON THE TECHIE PLAYERS RIPPING OUT THE HEDGES AFTER THEIR RARE WINS IN ATHENS. I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT THEY SHOULD BE CUFFED AND ARRESTED FOR VANDALISM.
ON THAT NOTE, I WAS VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED IN BEN JONES FOR PARADING AROUND WITH A PIECE ON GRANT FIELD IN HIS MOUTH. HE EMBARASSED US BY DOING THAT.

Do you realize you’ve been blogging to yourself for 6 hours?
Your efforts were SO effective last WEEK. You helped us beat Tech. Thanks for firing up our boys.
Keep up the good work!
P.S. I noticed everybody voted down your anti-Georgia slogans. Oh, that had to hurt since you see yourself as some self proclaimed advertising/ marketing genius Florida homer. If you’re so good, why are you unemployed loser? Duuuuuuhh

Why does Georgia keep losing to Florida?
November 30th, 2009
8:33 pm
This is THE question Richt needs to answer to take Georgia to the next level. Get past Florida, and you win the SEC, and on to the Natl Champ.
What’s the answer?
It’s not defense.
The answer?
Turnovers.
In the last 4 years, Georgia has won the games where they had 0 turnovers, and lost all 3 games where they had 3 or more turnovers. In 3 out of 4, the offense GAVAWAY the ball to Florida 3 or 4 times in one game.
Georgia falls on its own sword. That’s how you beat Georgia.
Force turnovers because they’re too NAIIVE to think peiople are GAMEPLANNING FOR TURNOVERS.
Bobo said recently he was mystifed at the turnover problem. Naiive. People are FORCING turnovers against his offense as the key component to their Strategy.
Teams will keep beating Georgia with the FORCE TURNOVER strategy until Georgia fixes the problem.
Florida is the key to going to the next level. Analyze why we’ve been losign to Florida when you make future staffing decisions. It’s the #1 question Richt needs to answer.
Why does Georgia keep losing to Florida?

To solve the turnover problem you can:
1) Offensively:
Running side: Play call mix-run the ball 65% of the plays, spin away from hit, stiff arm tackler, practice switching ball to correct hand, clean qb/rb transitions on hand-offs/pitches, study situations where guys fumbled–rep those situations, study how good o’s protect the ball-what’s different?
passing side: call low risk pass plays, roll out QB, pump fakes to get man clear, gimmick plays, clean pick plays, basically–when you throw the ball-make sure no one else is around to pick it, low to the ground throws, sideline throws, study situations where int’s happened–rep those situations, study horw good d’s takeaway the ball-what’s different?
Defensively:
practice drills that teach different ways to force takeaways, hand over/wrap around for DB’s, helmet on football tackles for LB’s, tip passes for DL’s, strip and rip for DE’s, blindside blitzes that jar it loose, zone blitzes, deception cover schemes/late shifting. Study what causes TO’s/takeaways–put more of that into game plan
Study what the Leaders do that's different

Penalties
Look at Air Force and Navy. Best at lack of penalties. It comes from discipline–self control—mindset.
Takeaways:
Oh St, Ohio, Boise St., Texas, and Middle Tenn
Giveaways:
Cinn, Or. St., Navy, Air Force, Alabama, Boise St.
Georgia is AT THE BOTTOM in ALL 3 AREAS.

Don't reward players who turn it over
November 30th, 2009
11:32 pm
If A qb TURNS IT OVER in 3 or 4 straight games, he sits for most coaches. No way he’s rewarded with more playing time.
If a RB is involved in too many to’s in consecutive games (fumbles, int’s when thrown to, etc.), he sits for most coaches.
Bobo can’t keep rewarding players for turning the ball over with MORE PLAYING TIME.
It’s similar to his policy of REWARDING POOR RB YARD PER CARRY or OL who commit too many penalties with more PLAYING TIME OR CARRIES? It’s insane.
Bobo rewards POOR QB, RB, WR, OR OL performance with MORE PLAYING TIME and GOOD performance with LESS PLAYING TIME.
No wonder Georgia has so many offensive giveaways.
2010 Keys for Georgia
December 1st, 2009
12:07 am
I looked at over 100 stats comparing Georgia to Florida and Alabama. Some things did not matter, like penalties, where Florida is poor too.
I saw gaps. Here’s what I saw, the 2 biggest winning factors were:
1) Offensive giveaways 1.5. or less per game
2) Defensive opponent yards per game 250 total yards or less
Offense:
1) 40+ rushing attempts per game
2) Time of Possession 52% or more
3) Rushing yards per game 200+
4) 1.5 or less Giveaways per game
Defense:
1) 250 yards of less total defense per game
2) 48% or less opponent time of possession
3) Takeaways 2 or more per game
Willie's D in 2010
December 1st, 2009
10:24 am
I’d like to see Willie set some new goals for 2010 in alignment with what Florida and Alabama is doing.
Defense Passing Yards Given Up Per Game:
Fla/Ala: 150
Georgia: 212 (ranked #43 in NCAA)
Defense Rushing Yards given Up Per Game:
Fla/Ala: 85
Georgia: 140 (ranked #50 in NCAA)
It’s tough, because Georgia doesn’t play teams like Florida Intenrational, Troy, and Charleston Southern in one season like Florida does. Those cream puff games really help the stats. That’s no excuse.
If Georgia’s going to compete with Flo/Alabama, new goals have to be set for Willie to get Georgia to a Natl’ Champ.
Willie is a defensive genius who has outschemed the best OC’s in the country. He just needs to put together a SEASON where he CONSISTENTLY COACHES to his capabilities, not just a few games like Hawaii & Florida 2007, Auburn & Tech 2009.
Bobo's O in 2010
December 1st, 2009
10:38 am
If you compare Georgia to Flo/Alabama this year stat-wise:
Bobo needs to get 400 yards a game to compete with Flo/Alabama.
We need balance: 210 on passing, 205 on rushing.
We need 40 rushing plays to average 5 ypc.
We need 25 passing plays to get 8 yards per pass attempt, 12 yards per completion.
