A Dog fan’s memorable night in enemy territory

Reshad Jones celebrates a terrific interception. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Saturday night’s Georgia-Georgia Tech game was memorable for me for more than just the unexpected result.

It was the first football game I’d attended at Grant Field since I was a teenager.

Generally, I’ve avoided the campus of the school that pretentiously likes to call itself “the Institute.” I’d been to a few concerts at the old stadium over the years and took the kids to a couple of Atlanta Beat games, but when it came to football I preferred not to mix with the folks in gold and white (and blue, the often forgotten Tech color). I can proudly say I’ve never given their athletic association a penny’s income.

But my son decided back in September to take me to this year’s Tech game as a birthday present. I have to admit that the way the season had transpired, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to the game, but I figured it would be an interesting experience. Different, at least.

That was the case right from when we arrived at our gate. I’d never been patted down before entering a football game.

Once we made it up to our seats in the upper deck of the North end zone stands, mostly among folks in red and black, I marveled at two things: First, the view of the nighttime Atlanta skyline was pretty spectacular. And second, how could a school of engineers come up with such a poorly designed stadium? The thing looks like it was just pieced together, with no thought about easy access from one side to the other.

One plus about our location was that the Redcoat Band, located diagonally across from us in a corner of the other end zone stands, could be heard just fine all night, while the Tech band down below us, looking as silly as ever in those all-white uniforms, couldn’t be heard at all where we sat. My son noted before the game that there weren’t as many red shirts as two years ago, when it looked nearly 50-50, but there was still a good representation of UGA fans and we fortunately had plenty of occasion to make noise.

I liked that Tech showed the seniors on the big video screen, introducing themselves and telling their favorite memory from their time with the Jackets. (Predictably, more than half cited last year’s win in Athens, all reciting the score as if it were engraved on their rings or something.) But the silly poses struck by many members of the team in frequent video clips of them clowning around in sweats and urging the fans on seemed kind of cheesy. And the Tech band still has the dorkiest announcer I’ve ever heard.

I thought the folks running the game took a big chance after pregame warm-ups,  letting the two teams come face to face at midfield, jumping up an down with only a thin line of coaches and officials between them. That easily could have gotten out of hand. There was a little shoving at the end of the game, but despite the hatred between the two programs, I also noticed throughout the night players helping opponents up off the ground and patting the helmet of someone on the other team after a play, which brought home the fact that many of the Bulldogs and Jackets grew up with each other and played together in high school.

So a Georgia-Georgia Tech game is sort of like a family squabble. OK, a pretty dysfunctional family.

And in the end, as my brother Tim noted when I called him after the game, Saturday night’s game turned out to be a pretty nice birthday present. One of the best I’ve ever received, in fact.

Some other random thoughts about Georgia’s win over Tech …

Georgia’s offensive line finally lived up to its preseason hype Saturday night. It was great to see the Dogs’ backs racking up yardage like in days of old, but it also made you sigh and wonder why it took so long this season to get the running game on track. And what the season could have been like had that aspect of Georgia’s game come together sooner. Or if the Dogs hadn’t had such a turnover problem all season. Take away the last-minute loss to LSU and the four second-half turnovers against Kentucky, and you’d have the pretty decent 9-3 season that so many folks predicted. …

It’s a good thing the Dogs got off to such a fast start against the Jackets, as the offense sputtered somewhat in the second half, having to resort to kicking field goals too many times thanks to uninspired play-calling in the red zone. And the poor tackling that killed Georgia last season occasionally reared its ugly head on Tech’s successful scoring drives. Vance Cuff particularly had a hard time subbing for the injured Brandon Boykin in that regard. But as I said last night, the middle of the defensive line was magnificent. And that one-handed pick by Reshad Jones was spectacular.

An entire quarter of Mark Richt football without a pass? Who’da thunk it?

Georgia’s special teams play continued to be spotty, particularly on kick coverage, and Blair Walsh had an up and down night, getting three touchbacks but also kicking one out of bounds. I felt sorry for him that he wasn’t able to ice the game with that 55-yard field goal attempt, but the three that he made provided the margin of victory, so he definitely should join Washaun Ealey and Caleb King on the list of the evening’s Bulldog heroes.

The running game, the most productive of the Mark Richt era, was the story of the night, but Joe Cox nearly had a beautiful long touchdown pass to Rantavious Wooten. The ball was perfectly placed; it just wasn’t caught, one of a couple of drops the Dogs had in the game.

All in all, it was the most satisfying win of the season, and not just because it was over the Jackets. Let’s hope that Richt and Mike Bobo aren’t just single-game converts to the running game. It’s still the best way to dominate in college football.

And when you can run the ball better than the No. 2 rushing attack in the country, what could be sweeter than that?

Well, how about this: Tech and Clemson are meeting for the ACC title. Clemson lost Saturday to South Carolina. Tech lost to Georgia. And Georgia beat South Carolina. As the Dogs’ Michael Moore facetiously asked in a postgame Tweet, doesn’t that make Georgia the real ACC champion?

This was one of the biggest wins in recent memory. To just hand to Tech like they did was awesome. Personally, it erases a bad season and gives me hope for the future. All of the other losses could be considered a “Sunk Cost”. Sometimes it only takes one game to turn a program around.

Heard an interesting take from a Tech fan on the radio this morning. Their failed fourth down pass should have been the third down play (as opposed to the bomb), but Johnson had got it into his head that he is invincible on fourth down. Yes. That’s what they call “hubris.” In recent weeks I have been far less annoyed by tiresome posts from Saint Simons than by the premature coronation of Johnson. It appears that the laws for physics DO seem to apply to him. Who knew?

As a Georgia native, a graduate of neither school, but a supporter of both, I must say reading the blogs today the Georgia Bulldog fans must be the biggest goobers and rednecks I have ever read.

I am completely unbiased and always enjoy watching this game but clearly I don’t think either team was that good last night. Further, had GT not had the false start on fourth and goal, followed by a missed chip shot field goal, and the injury to Nesbitt I think GT pulls this game out in the end.

And if we didn’t have all those turnovers and penalties this season, we’d be undefeated. But we did. So were not. Tech couldn’t get it done. They lost. We earned that win. Let’s us be goobers and redenecks. We have endured a lot these last 365.

I suggest you take a look at all opponents especially Tech when they win in Athens. It takes a year to re-grow the hedge and as I recalled the Tech players stormed to mid field stomping and churning the G. So if they can’t take it then stop it when they win.

Love the win and the fact all my Tech “friends” can just STFU now and suck on their thumbs.

Bill, dead on. Even with the maddening issues, its not hard to “imagine” 9-10 wins this year. And easy to see a 10 win season next year minus half the mistakes. 2011 before we have the horses on defense again.

Isn’t it great how a pretty awful season can be redeemed by one win? I just hope Richt understands that this win doesn’t mean that there aren’t serious problems with the program that need to be addressed, and that he won’t use this win as an excuse not to address them. Last night took the sting out of an otherwise bitter season, but Georgia still has a lot of work to be done.
First order is to get rid of Willie Martinez and that stupid zone. The D-line and LB were fantastioc against the GT option, but Tech’s RECIEVER (as in singular, one, only) was wide open running across the field all night long. We covered the deep stuff ok for once, but the underneath throws were still completely open every single time.

Still, the future on Offence is bright – Tavarres King, Rontavious Wooten, Orson Charles, Caleb King, Washaun Ealey, AJ Green — all Freshmen or Sophomores. Next season we willhave Aaron Murray or Zack Mettenberg stepping up to lead the Offense. Now to get some fresh meat on the defensive side of the ball!

Oh an finally – for the sweet kind wonderful Saint Simons

The truth is GA should have scored 40. When the running game is working that well the entire playback is opened up. We could have run play action more, thrown on first down more, thrown in some gimmick plays and caught their safeties cheating up. No problems whatsoever with CWM’s scheme other that the fact that it took us till the 12th game to play assignment football.

As a Techie, I hate that our players tore up the hedges and disabused the field last year. Jumping around on the G or GT is just more fodder for next year…..PJ’s play-calling at the end was poor but he had only one time out so he couldn’t call a run – there’s another weakness – no two-minute drill. On the third down play at the end Nesbitt had a wideopen player for first down yardage but threw deep into two-deep coverage. And Nesbitt hit some passes agaisnt Clemson to pull that game out. Regardless, UGA played a great game, period. Congrats!

That said, Tech danced on the edge in too many games for too long (Clemson, FSU, Wake) and finally got exposed. A team with a great offense, porous defense and mediocre kicking game is lucky to be 10-2. Paul Johnson’s coaching moxie is a lot of why the Jackets are 10-2, (See VA Tech) but live by the sword, die by it!

Well, I am really looking forward to next season at how we shift things around and get good ball movement based on using the running game to open up the pass. The shifting of the Oline was made too late and immature mistakes were made due to having young players. We have the number 3 and number 5 QBs in the country entering this next year with Aaron and Zach. Washaun and Caleb are coming back as well as AJ and Tavarres on the Offense by adding AJ Harmon to the lineup. The defense will add Rambo to the Defense with Abry and more. I saw both of them play in HS when we were traveling through the State playoffs both years. With the changes in store, we should be okay if the changes are made with enough time to adapt before the tough games. The next years scheduled games are as follows:

Louisiana
South Carolina
Arkansas

Colorado

First of all, SHUT UP GA TECH. I love the ACC Championship now-are they playing for 7th best team in the SEC? Tech wouldn’t be .500 in the SEC.

Hopefully, the coaching improvements start tomorrow; this doesn’t change the fact that we still need two coordinators. Our DBs were way too soft, and the playcalling was still brutal in a few situations.

Why put Branden Smith at TB when things were going so well? Why throw a screen behind the line on that crucial 3rd and 3 in the 4th quarter? When you are running as well as we were you don’t need to get so darn cute. Bobo may have a place on the staff but we MUST have a mature OC as well as an entire new defensive scheme.

With the right coaches, and a decent QB, this team can be awesome next season.

And did I mention that the North Avenue Nerds can just SHUT UP!! I thought the messiah, Paul Johnson, panicked in the last two minutes. He had plenty of time to go down the field 10 or 15 yards at a time, and he threw 3 straight bombs! Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I appreciate the class Tech fans I’ve seen. No doubt that m, Saint Simons, Yellow Fuzz, Ramble On and the like have given your fanbase a lot of crow to eat. Saint Simons after a while was simply mildly annoying.

I do think GT played a good game, and definitely had the opportunity to come back. It just was not to be. You’ve had a good year and should be congratulated, but the bragging rights are ours again.

Finally, I resent any comments that we tried to take out Nesbitt. That is just simply whining and isn’t true. I always say when we lose, no excuses. We’ve certainly had to do that a lot this year. It isn’t so easy when it’s your turn and you’re not that used to it, huh?

Go DAWGS! Looks like we’ll get to beat up another ACC opponent in the bowl game, either here in Atlanta or in Nashville.

And did you see SC whip clemson? This is what your always chokes conference championship game is ====

I agree with Damon that we need to seek entrance into the ACC. I have been reading about Urban’s recruiting class that is predicted to be the best in history of all schools. We have not been able to beat Florida with equal athletes, how are we going to fare when they pull in talent.

But the team can hang with the best in the ACC. That is where we belong.

farsider, it’s an internet football blog, not sunday school, get over yourself. Nobody is going to go out and hunt down tech fans on the street in the real world , just to be rude to them. relax.

And who is acting like somebody won the SuperBowl? (if you are really going to pretend to be making a serious point, it helps to not exagerate to the point of silly) I think everyone is acting as if we just won a big game against an In-state rival, who took great pleasure in rubbing it in for the past year, salvaging a disappointing season. Isn’t that more likely?

still dont understand why on 3rd and short with the game on the line and over 300 yards rushing in the bank, Bobo goes into the shotgun and tries to throw…..

It’s obvious to me the reason we didn’t run the ball like this all year is because we didn’t play the trade school all year. You see that they played no one. No one. The best that Tech can hope for is to beat Clemson, another no one and then play someone like Cinci or TCU, more no ones in the Orange Bowl. They’ve had practice games against poor teams all year long, why play one now?

Since we are now on a high for next year, I wanted to report to all true dawg fans another name to watch for. I just saw a young man, and Georgia commitment, named Alex Ogletree from Newnan High School single handedly (almost) defeat the number 1 team in the state (Grayson) in the quarterfinals of the state playoff. Mr. Ogletree made many solo outstanding plays on defense to stop several Grayson drives…oh yeah, in addition, on offense (yes he plays on both sides of the ball) he made a pro-type catch of what turned out to be the winning touchdown pass for Newnan……oh yeah, he also blocked what would have been a game winning field goal for Grayson with ten seconds left in the game! What a great athlete! Welcome to Athens Mr. Ogletree….can’t wait to see you wearing the red and black…..Will you be a wide receiver, running back, linebacker, corner, or maybe all of the above! Wow! Go Bulldogs!

Tech People have probably experienced this moment themselves, but for the Dawg supporters on this blog, let me tell you why Tech fans hold so many of your fans in such low class regard.
I was at the game last night with my son and daughter in the upper deck of the North stands. A family of Bulldog fans sat in front of us. A mother, father and 4 early teens, the mother began trash talking an older Tech couple below them, who shortly after the first quarter got up and left telling the people around them” These people are the rudest we’ve ever run into in the 50 years we have been coming here.”
That display by the woman would have been bad enough, but when Josh Nesbitt went down with an injury late in the first quarter , she made the statement that personified her standing as a human being, I quote” That’s what that N++ger gets for going to Tech instead of Georgia” .
Later. when another Tech Player went down with injuries she said, ” Good, that N++ger deserved it”
I know this is not represenative of most Georgia Fans, but I have seen similar behavior in many of Georgia followers which are obviously not Georgia Grads.
This lady and her family: a Husband that said little between chewing his chaw and spitting in a cup other that to nod at his wife’s racial diatribes, the children who cheered the injuries along with their mother ,the mother that spent the entire game stuffing food and drink into her fat overweight body and face: only pausing long enough to yell another racial slur or applaude another Tech Injury.
So, when you jump on Tech fans as having a “we’re better than you” attitude, these are the Georgia fans we are talking about. Maybe, the Georgia faithful should put a call out to their fans to represent their favorite school in a more positive way, if they want a more respectful relationship with Fans from other schools. You are perceived by how you act!
Oh, one last thing, before you write this post off as another wimpy, nerd Tech fan post, understand I am a former cop that would have no problem taking on fans physically or verbally, but I know the difference between being civilized and not, something this family does not.

On this night, Georgia adopted the personality of Georgia Tech, blowing open huge holes for Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, en route to a season-high 339 yards on the ground. Had Mark Richt known he’d get that long-awaited breakout effort from his kids, he’d have tried to get Tech on the schedule twice in 2009.

Still I wonder: if it was so bad as you describe in your “story”, why didn’t you just go get a stadium official and have your say right then? I guess that didn’t cross your mind in the heat of the moment. Now you choose to go back in your memory of what happened and add a few more saucy comments the day after……typical! Hey CCRIDER – just so you know. I too sat in the North Stands. Two Tech fans sat directly behind me. One insisted on using the F word after every play – despite the fact that my two young sons were right in front of him. He too chewed tobacco – which he continuously spat on my wife’s seat. He didn’t bother to use a cup. When I insisted he stop, he spewed enough four letter words to make a sailor blush. He was in the Georgia section to cause trouble – nothing more, nothing less. It’s college football. It’s not Sunday morning church. Don’t paint the whole fan base with one brush. I don’t.

1. a couple of college boys dropping the F-bombs and taunting the visiting fans.

or

2. a family of 6 obviously country bumpkins, pays out all that money, makes the trip into dowtown Atlanta to be at a college football game, at an opponent’s stadium (that was televised). Then unabashed starts shouting the N-word several times despite being in the middle of a crowded public event. Oh yea, and were so rude to an older couple, they had to get up and leave.

How can we get that type of fire from Mark Richt at every game? From yelling at the Tech player out of bounds to the pre 4th quarter speech — rarely is CMR that fired up and I think it carried over to the team. Despite the 3 fumbles I saw a focused team REALLY trying to not make the mistakes that have killed us this (and last) year. Why does it take an entire season to develop? I almost hate to suggest it but there will be a swagger in whatever bowl we play in…similar to 07 but with much less prestige…

Enter your comments hereJeff Sagarin BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 17.

Kenneth Massey BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 18.

USA Today Coaches’ Poll has ranked UGA Number 33.

Anderson – Hester Seattle Times Poll has ranked UGA Number 24.

BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 28.

BCS Computer Polls have ranked UGA Number 24.

There are now no ACC teams ranked in the AP Poll nor Coaches’ Poll Top 10. Georgia Tech is no longer the top-ranked ACC team; Virginia Tech is Number 11 in both the Coaches’ Poll and AP Poll.

Clemson dropped out of the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25.

SEC has Florida Number 1 in both Coaches’ and AP Polls. AP Poll has Alabama Number 2, and USA Today Coaches’ Poll has Alabama Number 3.

BCS has Florida Alabama Number 1 and Number 2.

UGA is projected for $5.6 million dollar Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against the top-ranked ACC team Virginia Tech, again pitting the top non-BCS ACC team against the 5th best SEC team.

Tennessee is projected for $3 million dollar Outback Bowl in Tampa against Wisconsin.

Nebraska who has not played any team in the BCS Top 33 except for 1 Loss to Number 11 Virginia Tech plays Texas to see if the BCS would pit Alabama Florida for both The SEC Championship Game and the BCS National Championship Game. A Nebraska win could bring that game up for the 1st time pitting 2 teams from the same conference in the BCS National Championship Game. Root for Nebraska, but they haven’t beat any team in the BCS Top 33.

Tennessee is Number 46 in the BCS Poll (UGA Number 28.) Tennessee beat no team in the BCS Top 25, no team in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25 and no team in the AP Poll Top 25.

ACC is 9-11 against BCS conferences.

SEC is 10-4 against BCS Conferences.

SEC 10-4 is by far the best of any conference against BCS Conferences, as no Conference has more wins against BCS Conferences and no Conference is close to the SEC Winning Percentage against BCS Conferences.

SEC is 31-6 against all 1-A teams. This, too, is by far the best of all conferences.

No BCS Conference team lost to any 1-AA team, except the ACC who Lost not once but twice to 1-AA teams.

SEC out of conference is 42-6 by far the best in the nation of all conferences.

ACC does not have a winning record against The SEC, The Big XII, the Big Ten (11), nor the PAC-10.

ACC is 2-5 against SEC this season so far.

There are only 2 conferences with top-ranked teams, The SEC with the Top 2 and the Big XII with 1 of the Top 3. After that, all the weenie conferences are ahead of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and every Big Ten (11) team.

TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State are all 3 ranked ahead in every poll of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and ahead of every Big Ten (11) team.

ACC does not even have a Top 10 ranked team, again. None.

The same as it is every year.

Average BCS Ranking of every team in every conference shows SEC Number 37, Big East Number 40, PAC-10 Number 41, ACC Number 48, Big Ten (11) Number 50 and the Big XII dragging up the rear at Average BCS Ranking of Number 51.

Big XII is really really really really bad.

Notre Dame is 6-6 against a soft soft soft schedule. Notre Dame beat no Top 25 team in any poll. Just imagine losing to BCS Ranked Number 83 Michigan. Notre Dame’s best win is over BCS Ranked Number 56 team, Nevada for God’s sake.

TCU played a really soft schedule. They will obviously lose if they play any reasonable opponent.

Oregon. Thank Oregon of the PAC-10 for Losing to Boise State for why Boise State will take away the BCS at large bid from the ACC.

UGA SoS is Number 6 in the nation with the win over Number 12 Georgia Tech.

Tennessee vols SoS is Number 44 in the nation with the win over Number 28 UGA.

Georgia Tech SoS is Number 48 in the nation with the win over Number 11 Virginia Tech; yet Virginia Tech is ranked AHEAD of Georgia Tech in both the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and Virginia Tech is ranked ahead of Georgia Tech in the AP Poll.

4th best SEC team is UGA in the BCS Rankings at Number 28.

4 SEC East teams are 7-5 tied for 2nd in the SEC East behind Florida. 2 of those have a losing record in The SEC Kentucky and South Carolina. South Carolina is ranked way ahead of Tennessee vols at Number 31 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll which the vols are not in, and Number 35 for South Carolina in the BCS Poll. Tennessee vols are Number 46 in the BCS Poll because the vols beat no team ranked in the Top 25 of the polls. South Carolina beat no team in the Top 25 of the polls either, but South Carolina has far better wins than Tennessee vols with South Carolina’s win over Ole Miss and win over Climpsum Farmers to ruin the ACC Chumpionship Game with UGA’s major assistance dropping Number 12 Georgia Tech from any discussion of anything this morning.

SEC Rankings 2009 :

1.Florida 12-0. BCS # 1.

2.Alabama 12-0. BCS # 2.

3.LSU 9-3 BCS Number 13.

4.UGA 7-5 vs # 6 SoS and BCS # 28.

5.Arkansas 7-5 BCS # 30.

6.Ole Miss 8-4 vs # 59 SoS BCS # 33.

7.South Carolina 7-5 BCS # 35.

8.Mississipppi State 5-7 vs. # 1 SoS and BCS Number 44.

9.Tennessee vols 7-5 vs # 44 SoS and BCS Number 46.

10.Auburn 7-5 BCS # 48.

11.Kentucky 7-5 BCS # 51.

Ole Miss could get a better bowl bid than UGA at 8-4, but when you see SoS # 59 for Ole Miss and # 6 for UGA at 7-5, the nod goes to UGA.

UGA gets the 4th Bowl bid in The SEC. Clearly.

Every AJ-C sportswriter picked Georgia Tech. I picked GA to beat Tech and South Carolina to beat Clemson, relegating the ACC Chumpionship Game to nothingness.

Bill King, I read your blog recently that stated “Rivalry with UGA defines Tech”. From reading your blog above and the responses from most of the UGA fans, it appears that the opposit is true, i.e. “Rivalry with Tech defines UGA”. As you stated above “this UGA win over Tech is the most satisfying win of the season”. Also, I believe you are a very petty individual (making derogatory comments about Tech’s stadium, band, etc.). It is a shame that a once proud program like UGA and its fans have become so petty and are defined by a win over one team, Tech. If I am not mistaken, Tech is 10-2, ranked 10th in the latest BCS standings, are going to play for the ACC championship and possibly an Orange Bowl (BCS Bowl) berth. In my opinion, that is much more important that a Tech win over UGA. Maybe UGA will become relevant in college football again, and its fans can aspire to more than a win over Tech.

Believe me football fan, we aspire to more than a win over tech. The reason we’re happy this win is because, well, we didn’t win that many big games. I mean, we have the Auburn win, but they aren’t a ranked team this year, and we’ve beaten them the past three seasons as well. There’s the South Carolina game, and we always enjoy beating Spurrier, but they aren’t a top 25 team either. So we’ll take the GT game as this year’s signature win, seeing as how y’all were in the top ten and supposed to be good, and we get payback for last year. But, for most UGA fans, a victory over FLA in Tebow’s senior year would have been better, and beating down the Kiffins would have been nice as well. Those weren’t in the cards, we just aren’t a good team this year, so we’ll be happy and settle for beating you. The truth is though, in a couple of weeks we’ll have moved on to worrying about whether we’re ever gonna beat Florida again, but all the Tech fans I know have spent the past 365 days feeding off of last years victory.

And, ccrider et al, anybody that has gone to any college football games in the south knows that every team has obnoxious fans, drunk fans, racist fans, redneck fans etc…, UGA has them (I’ve met them, and would kick them out of games if I could, GA fan or not), GT has them (again, I’ve met them, at football games and out in the world) so calling out certain UGA fans is pretty pointless.

As a student at UGA, and a sister of 5 years a fraternity at Tech, I always thought, for the most part, that Tech fans had more class than our Georgia fans; however, as I stood on the front steps of my boyfriend’s fraternity house yelling for my bulldogs, I had a 50+ yr old man tell me “You like it Doggy Style”

My only reply “Well, you were just forced to take it that way for the past four hours. Hope you feel really masculine now”

Really Classy GT, and thanks for brining me down to your level with my rebuttal.

Want to talk about Class? How about Richt pulling his players off the field with time still left on the clock even though we won the game. Or how about him making our bulldogs get the ice off of their field. I thought our boys played great, and I am glad Joe Cox doesn’t have to end the season with another slap across the face.

(Could you please not let the comments of Saint Simons be posted? He is way out of line…)

Thanks football fan, we appreciate your concern about the future of Georgia football. If you read the comments (and I suspect you did, but they don’t really fit in your agenda, so you ignored 95% of them) we are all just poking fun at the tech FANS, namely the ones that have acted like the biggest children in the history of sports banter for the past year. Not the idea that beating football team is some big accomplishment.

Most of us will see our real tech pals today and its all going to be good natured. Trust me the pettiness ‘in here’ is WELL deserved by those to whom it is directed. Well deserved, and expected. I believe they would be disappointed not to see it (pssst. sports trash talk is in fun. Unless your self-righthous head is up your butt, that is.)

Bill’s was dead on and the fact that the tech fans have made such a huge deal about thier one win in a decade causing a more than normal taunting this year PROVES his point.

Believe me, after we have our fun for a couple more days, UGA fans will go back to dismissing the tech win as same ol same ol, and focus back on what we need to do to win a real game. Happy now?

That moron from alerbamer better hope they do beat FU next week. Saban will lose a lot of Shula’s players, and will be back to being the team that Bama was during the biggest part of this decade. You know, the ones that UGA owned? The same goes for that FU fan running his mouth. Gators will fall far after this season. The Dawgs will continue to progress towards the top of the conference. Auburn will be the sore on Bama’s butt like it was for most of the decade also. Mark it down morons.

Congrats on the win to the true class UGA fans- believe or not there are a few. I know several in fact. Most of you clowns on here though probably never got anywhere near the campus other than on Saturdays. Try as hard as you can to win with class- one would think you remember what it feels like to win. Based on the reactions of the players and you clowns, it seems like you have never been there. Enjoy watching Tech play for a championship this week while you gas up the RV for the short trip to Nashville.

I think its hilarious that you guys base your perception of Tech fans on what a few idiots post on here regularly. Ever team has their lunatic fringe. Ever true Tech fan I know was very excited about the win last year (kind of like UGA is when they get a rare win against UF), but it was not life changing like you make it out to be. Believe me, the conference championship is a bigger deal to almost all Tech fans I know, because it means a BCS game. Losing to you guys hurts, but its not the end of the world, or the season.

Bill- the stadium is pretty bad (though I have been to Sanford, not much difference except the view is not as good as BD). What do you expect, it was built in 1913.

Division standings aren’t real complicated to figure out. After 2007, I’d have thought you’d have figured it out. Overall, head to head, W’s and L’s within the division. Am I missing something..? Have a great day.

Now just maybe ya’ll can relax a little enjoy the holidays because this Tech fan is still happy because we still have a good tean and good coach.

Absolutely right, BuzztheKiller, the Saint Simons, m, and Yellow Fuzz guys are the exception, not the rule, same as a few irritating UGA fans. It’s a shame everyone can’t be a little more respectful of each other, like me and my Tech buddies, but there’s always a few who like to rub it in, and then some… I, for one hope Tech wins out and finishes out 12-2 and a top-ten ranking. I’ll just make our win shine a little brighter in a dark season…

Well I had to taek a couple of days to savor the win…what a great month Nov has turned out to be both Gobal Warming and the ACC got exposed! Great game I knew if we could just hold on to the ball we could run against Tech after our O-lines performance the last 3 games just too much of a size difference. Still hats off to the class Tech fans on the blog…honestly I don’t see any more 7-8 game streaks as long as CPJ is at Tech, it will make it a better rivalry but in the end UGA will always OWN the Bugs..now for my fellow members of the Bulldog Nation…lets move past the bad old days of the Saint who can’t be named and leave off the posting of 30-24 day in and day out..remember we won but at the end of the day…we just beat Tech.

I hear you. It is embarrassing. I cringe at the thought of what you experienced. When I see the UGA trailer trash Wal-Mart fans coming I RUN the other way. By some of the comments on here, you can see we have plenty “fans” who never attended a single class at UGA, but they are the one’s running their redneck mouths. As a UGA Alumni and fan, I probably get more irritated at them then the opposing team’s fans do. It is embarrassing, and makes UGA look really, really bad. Not we can do about it though…just got to deal with them. Arggghhh!

Face it, Football Fan:

The ACC championship isn’t that big a deal. Especially this year, when both teams were beaten by mediocre SEC teams.

This was indeed the most satisfying win of the season. But it’s not the be-all and end-all of our season. We’re still disappointed, because we expect better.

And my point still stands: Tech fans focus on UGA all year long. UGA fans only focus on Tech when we’re playing them.

Doyle … was a mutt:

I never said the game doesn’t mean anything to UGA. I said that Georgia fans and players don’t focus on Tech year-round, while the Jackets and their fans do indeed seem to focus on UGA 365 days a year.

ccrider,

If you were a “former” policeman, surely you would have had enough ability to have reported this “family” to security before an “older” couple would have been “forced” to leave. You apparently didn’t have enough decency to “take on” this family at the time this was all going on. You just sat there, accepting it and then chose to write about it, saying it didn’t apply to all UGA fans but then asking all UGA fans to ask that the “bad” UGA fans behave. And then, you insult overweight people by lumping them in with this “family” and their behavior.

This is one of the tallest tales I’ve heard in a long time. It doesn’t pass the common sense test. You made up the whole thing.

It’s getting pretty funny now the amount of these type of comments floating around:

“As just a fan of college football, and with no agenda, or allegience either way, and just happen to be reading the blogs devoted to How UGA fans really enjoyed beating tech, and then browsing 4 pages worth of comments about a subject, let me remind you that I have no interest in, I find the attitude specifically and only from UGA fans quite alarming. So much so that I find them totally beneath the otherwise high regard that I hold for UGA. And in order to deminish the win for UGA, let me just me figure out some way to minimize how good tech is, all the while pointing out how much better they are given thier final regular season record, because as we all know in a head to head rivalry, it is in fact, the “overall” season record that the fans care about and not who won that particular game.”
