10 favorite UGA wins over Tech
I simply cannot tolerate Georgia Tech in any season or under any circumstances, so every win over the Jackets is precious, but especially in the marquee sport of football.
The Vince Dooley era was a great one for Dogs fans in the rivalry with Tech. (University of Georgia)
I’ve been fortunate to have followed the Dogs through a wonderful era beginning with Vince Dooley’s first team that has seen Georgia dominate Tech 33-12, with the Dogs twice running off seven wins in a row while the Jackets have three times won two in a row and had one streak of three in a row over Jim Donnan. So there have been a lot more great days for the Red and Black in the in-state rivalry than there have been bad ones.
But some wins over the insects have a special place in my heart. So here are my 10 favorite UGA wins over Georgia Tech. …
1964: Georgia wins 7-0 in Athens. The first of Dooley’s 19 wins over the Jackets in 25 seasons was played on a cold, rainy day at Sanford Stadium. A Tech fumble was recovered by the Dogs at the 22, leading to a winning score by Preston Ridlehuber. The Dogs went on to the Sun Bowl while the loss to Georgia kept the Jackets out of the Gator Bowl.
1971: Georgia wins 28-24 in Atlanta. This nationally televised game on Thanksgiving night was highlighted by one of the greatest Bulldog comebacks ever. Tech had jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 17-14 at halftime. Led by my junior high and Athens High classmate Andy Johnson, the Dogs roared back in the second half to take a 21-17 lead, only to see Tech regain the upper hand, 24-21. The Dogs got the ball at their own 30 with 1:29 on the clock and Andy’s running and passing moved them downfield, with Jimmy Poulos going over for the winning TD.
1975: Georgia wins 42-26 in Atlanta. Another nationally telecast Thanksgiving night game on ABC saw Ray Goff, Glynn Harrison and Co. run wild over Pepper Rodgers’ Jackets in freezing weather. I was watching this at my future mother-in-law’s house just two days before my wedding, and her next-door neighbor was a big Tech fan. We promised to touch base after the game. I got to make the victory call. After the miserable day the Dogs had suffered in the cold rain and mud a year earlier, this one was especially sweet.
1978: Georgia wins 29-28 in Athens. The game that made Buck Belue a UGA legend long before he’d ever even met Herschel Walker. Tech was up 20-0 when the freshman quarterback got put into the game late in the first half. Helped by a great Scott Woerner punt return, Belue brought the Dogs back and threw a fourth-quarter scoring pass to Amp Arnold that gave Dooley the choice of kicking the PAT for a tie or going for two points and the win. Who said Vince was a conservative coach?
1981: Georgia wins 44-7 in Atlanta. The Dogs were riding high with No. 34 in the backfield, but somehow that week the Atlanta sports media latched onto the idea that Georgia was ripe for an upset. Belue put an end to that nonsense on the first play from scrimmage with an 80-yard scoring strike to Lindsay Scott. Oh, and Herschel scored four touchdowns.
1993: Georgia wins 43-10 in Atlanta. Another Thanksgiving Day game on TV. This is the one where a brawl between the two teams broke out late in the game. The other night at the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting, Eric Zeier told a great story about that. He was in the middle of the brawl when it erupted and his helmet was yanked off. Then a big Tech defensive lineman wrapped his arms around Zeier and lifted him off the ground. The Tech player carried Zeier through the end zone and then put him down, saying, “You’ll be safer here.” Not the punch line the audience was expecting.
1995: Georgia wins 18-17 in Atlanta. My brother Tim was at this game, Ray Goff’s last against Tech as head coach, and it’s his favorite. Hines Ward was still at QB and led the Dogs back from 14 points down. A 16-play drive culminated in the winning kick by Kanon Parkman. Say what you will about Goff, he still managed to win five straight over the Jackets.
1997: Georgia wins 27-24 in Atlanta. Tech took a 24-21 lead and thought it had won the game, but Mike Bobo, who threw four touchdown passes that day, led the Dogs downfield, with four pass plays in 40 seconds. The folks in yellow and white still gripe about the interference flag that helped the Dogs along. Corey Allen’s winning catch was the first video clip I ever had on a computer.
2002: Georgia wins 51-7 in Athens. A total butt-kicking from beginning to end for Mark Richt’s SEC champions. Probably the most dominating performance by a Georgia team against Tech ever. Certainly, one of the best days I can ever recall in Sanford Stadium.

2006: Georgia wins 15-12 in Athens. Tech was the ACC Coastal Division champion and No. 16 in the country while Georgia was unranked and had bounced back from losses to Vandy and Kentucky by beating Auburn. You would have expected Tech to be the overwhelming favorite, but the oddsmakers liked the Dogs by 2. Probably because Reggie Ball was Tech’s QB and no team could get in Ball’s head and mess him around like Georgia. I remember having no doubt the Dogs would win this game simply because the Jackets still had our favorite QB. It didn’t hurt, though, that Paul Oliver owned Tech’s celebrated receiver, Calvin Johnson, and never let him be a factor. My daughter says this is the most exciting game she’s ever seen. One of the Dogs’ sweetest wins over Tech.

Sure, the blowouts over the years have been great…squashing the bugs back into their rightful place…but it is better to beat them with a late score…like 1997…they think they have the game won…and then we break their hearts…Not only do we get to enjoy the thrill of victory…but it is made sweeter by their misery..

Bill, I have to admit that Reggie Ball was the best thing to ever come along for UGA football! As a Tech fan it was one of the most humiliating losses to the Pups ever, except for the 2002 beatdown.
This Saturday night should be a good game, the Pups could win it. But, it will take a stellar performance from everyone on the team and from all the coaches.
As I have stated all week, the disrespect shown toward the team from the UGA fans is going to have an affect on the players, and one that is not so good. You just don’t walk out on your team when the game is close and your team could pull it out at the end. That was the most amazing thing I have ever seen at a UGA game ever.
I am a Tech fan with no apologies. I do watch and enjoy seeing the Pups play throughout football season. I obviously get real prejudice when Tech and Georgia square off against one another. However, in all the years I have watched both teams (going back to the late 1950’s) I have never seen such disrespect shown by a group of fans toward their own players as what took place last Saturday and on national television. It was embarrassing… the fans, not the team.
I would hope that the UGA faithful will show a little more class than that Saturday night, no matter how the game turns out.

GSU would rather have a special teams coach than one of our fine coordinators as their head coach. Tech fans and players already have this years game decided and in their opinion UGA don’t even need to show up on saturday. They’re all posting about Tech coming up with 10 rushing touchdowns, some even saying that UGA probably won’t even get the ball but maybe 3 times for the entire game. 700 yards of offense.

One of my favorites was in 1979. I think the Dawgs were 5-5 and not expected to win at all. It was a dreadful rainy day. The Redcoat Band practiced that morning and during our songs “Singing in the Rain” and “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, the clouds unloaded. We were in full uniform, wet, stinky and in a really foul mood. Once we got to the game, we decided that the Dawgs would need our help that day and were going to do whatever we could. I think we caused four our five false start penalties for tech when they got near the goal line on our side of the field by playing “Glory” over and over again. All in all we played it 77 times during that game. The game was also televised on ABC and when the announcers said at halftime that the Redcoat Band was the key for Georgia, both offensively and defensively, we we went nuts!

Sautee Dawg, you are right. My old daddy used to complain, “Georgia POINTS for Tech; Tech doesn’t POINT for Georgia!” And he was right, too.
In those ancient days of the 1940’s and ’50’s, Tech would point for Notre Dame, for then-powerful Duke, for then-powerful Navy, and finally get around to Georgia. There was much more parity between Tech and Georgia, than since 1960, but Tech’s “country cousins” seemed to take especial pleasure in coming to the Big City and beating Tech.

It’s 33-12 since Vince took over in ‘64, Bill. We need all the wins we can get in this series. But I think you have to admit that a good many of those 33 have been good games (you mentioned many of them), so the domination isn’t quite as bad as the record would indicate. I’m sure Richt (or someone else if necessary) will get things turned around quickly at UGA, so if CPJ stays at Tech the next decade should have some great games.

Little things like a National Championship, several unbeaten seasons, Orange Bowl Champs, Sugar Bowl Champs, Rose Bowl Champs, Cotton Bowl Champs, Heisman Throphy winner (Sinkwich), Future NFL MVP ( Trippi) and a few other “little” things…

U-no, myself, my two daughters and Bill King stayed til the end of the game last week. We were not happy with the outcome or the four turnovers. But us four never booed the players or even the coaches. My daughter Baylie could not understand the boos from our fans against the players. And me being the Sightless Dead Greek Poet that I am, I could not explain the boos to her also. Win or lose, we are still UGA.

If we win Saturday it will be my favorite…..but the 51-7 ass whipping is it for now. I have been to all fifty states…seen the sun rise over the Grand Canyon and set behind the Rocky Mountains; watched whales jump out of the Atlantic Ocean and camped in Yosimite, Glacier, Yellowstone and every other major National Park—but the most beautiful sight I have ever seen was those yellow SOBs pouring out of the Tech Deck at halftime of the ‘02 game. I was a Redcoat trumpet player for the 29-28 Belue-to-Arnold win in ‘78. Eddie Lee Ivery had been running all over us but went down with a knee injury, or it would probably have been a lopsided Tech win. This was the year of the Wonderdogs, and beating Tech after that miserable tie against Auburn in the previous game made the end of the season that much sweeter. The 15-12 was also a great, great win, if for no other reason than that the Dogs’ defense, Oliver in particular, used Calvin Johnson like a drunk sorority girl.
Of course, the Reggie Ball years are sweet as hell wins too…..too bad his eligibility couldn’t have been extended. But by his sixth year, he might have learned to count to four and started going to class….

Redcoatdawg, I was in the band (trumpet) for the ‘79 game as well!!! Good God, what a downpour we had during rehearsals that morning, and it didn’t get any better during the game. (The only thing that kept me halfway comfortable was the WWII steel helmet and liner and I had decorated in Red and Blaco with a few key decals thrown in. It kept my head mostly dry, and that was all that was dry in that deluge.)
Mike Kelly (Tech QB) backed away from the line at LEAST a dozen times while we blasted “Glory” at the Bees!! If you remember, we also played “Glory” after EVERY ‘Dog snap, not just for first downs like we usually did. I remember seeing a recording of the game at the Redcoat Christmas party, and when the network announcers exclaimed “Now the band’s on defense!!” the place roared.
Man, I hadn’t thought about that game in years. Thanks for the flashback.

Final Tech game for Willie, Janeck, and Fabris; however, get ready to welcome Kirby Smart to Athens. Bobo either gets demoted to QB coach, or become OC at Memphis. Point is, I support my team through good and bad, period. Been doing it for 34 years. and as much as I love my Dogs, I am sadly convinced that tomorrow will be an ugly day for us. I’ll be delighted to be proven wrong, but all the signs point to a lopsided Bumbles win. I’ll give CPJ credit – he’s solidified his team and turned them into a machine in a short time. So take your 8-year loyalty and stick it. At the end of the day, the best thing about the game will be that we’re still Bulldogs and you’e not.

Humble, facts don’t seem to be a real issue for you. If Paul Oliver could really play, he’d have more than TWO career picks in the NFL. Bill, the 1978 game was probably the best UGA game I ever saw in person. It was a cold day and we were getting whipped. My buddy and I started drinking Jim Beam very heavily. There were people on top of the Chemistry building. They had camped out and built a fire on the bridge on Thursday night before the game. Belue replaces Jeff Pyburn, and the rest is history. What a player Woerner was. I recall he came into our English final exam in the spring with no shirt and no shoes on.

While those two events could coincide, it’s doubtful.
I foresee a game that’s fairly close on the scoreboard, but only because of a garbage-time TD.

1964 – This victory began the domination and loss of rivalry. Tech became a team that GA had to survive. It was also the first year my family had season tickets. I still remember that fumble on that wet field that day. It all felt pretty good! Today the rivalry is back. Johnson said he would bring it back and it is back indeed. Should this come out as a normal person would expect, then Tech’s name and the date of next year’s game will be in the GA locker room. A victory next year for GA will be critical for CMR.

I know I’m late for this blog, but I just watched a great SEC domination of an ACC Championship Game Team. SC just went ahead of Clemson 34-17 with just over 2 mins left. One down and 2 more to go. One expected and the other unexpected. But the Dawgs’ win will be the sweetest. Go Dawgs! Woof-woof!
