A lot of ‘ifs’ cloud Dogs’ chances against Jackets

What are the odds that Jeff Owens and the Georgia defense can rise to the occasion against Tech? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

What are the odds that Jeff Owens and the Georgia defense can rise to the occasion against Tech? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Saturday night’s debacle had been over only a few seconds when someone posed me the question that I’ve been asked several times since: Is there any chance Georgia can beat Georgia Tech?

My gut response: No way.

But that’s not the full answer. This is college football, after all, and a rivalry game. Unexpected things happen. And I’m a fan. We never completely give up hope. Yes, the Dogs could win the game …

If Tech implodes and plays its worst game of the season on offense.

If Georgia somehow manages to scheme the triple option correctly and play disciplined, mistake-free defense.

If Mike Bobo’s offense can avoid turning the ball over.

If, on both sides of the ball, the Dogs refrain from committing needless penalties.

OK, for those eternal optimists out there, I’ll grant that I don’t think it necessarily would take a combination of all those “ifs” for Georgia to win. A sub-par day for the Tech offense and the Dogs not turning the ball over might be enough. Or a really lousy day for the Tech defense and the Dogs clicking on offense could give Georgia a chance in a shootout.

I fervently hope those things happen. But I know the odds are stacked against the Dogs as they take on the seventh-ranked, 10-1 Jackets.

Maybe my pessimism will lessen as the week goes on, but the more I look back at this season, the more doubtful that seems.

What about you? Looking at how the two teams stack up realistically, what are Georgia’s chances against Tech? What has to happen for the Dogs to win? I’d even like to hear the Tech fans’ thoughts on this. Jacket lovers, what in your worst and most unlikely nightmares leads to a Georgia win?

Spoke with UGA VII a few moments ago.

He said Georgia loses even if Georgia wins.

The only way for Georgia to win is to lose by 50.

Smart, smart dog.

UGA VII really doesn`t like any of the Georgia coaches.

Something about a tree grows in Athens.

The dawgs will not win this game. Anybody who thinks we will is either dreaming or just trying to start an argument. We have no QB, no defense, no DC, no OC, no kick-return coverage. I think we will do good to score 17 points. GT will probably score around 60. And half of those points will be with their 2d team.

We will finish this year at 6-6 and the team should forego the bowl. A bowl is a type of reward for your year. What in the world is to be rewarded? About the only thing I can think of is that it’s rewarding to know that Joe Cox will be gone.

Any of you dawgs that do go to the game, you need to make sure you travel in groups. Remember that area is riddled with dangerous crime. Personally I suggest you just stay home. Why risk your life, or your family’s life, to go see an arse whipping anyway?

Tech should be favored by a couple of TDs, Tech has been up and down all season. If the Tech team that played the 2nd half against Vandy plays the UGA team that played the 2nd half against Kentucky, Tech could win by 30 points. But that’s unlikely. UGA always gets up for Tech, while Tech seems to focus on the ACC teams.

But I would love to see Tech win by 30 points!

If Ga Tech Plays like They Did Against LSU...

Here’s an “IF” you forogt to mention.

What IF Ga Tech and Johnson plays like they did in the Bowl game against LSU where they got dominated 38 to 3?

What if they play like they did against Miami this year?

I like “IF’s” too.

Are you kidding me… If GT does beat the DAWGS this year, I guess all 10 Nerd fans that pack themselves into Booby Dud Stadium at Pathetic Grunt Field will get to see it live. That is if their Mommy lets them stay up that late…. Pathetic Joke (that is your coach PJ, right)

IF we hold on to the ball and IF we don’t commit crucial penalties and IF joe plays like he did against arkansas and IF our defense does not give up the big play and IF we let our kicker kick off into the endzone and IF we get a few lucky bounces, we will prevail! It ain’t over until it’s over! This can be our finest hour! GO DAWGS!!

If Georgia has Another 26-0 3rd Qrtr?

November 24th, 2009
9:15 am

Ga Tech’s hanging their hopes for beatng Georgia on a repeat of the 26-0 3trd Qrtr. Of course, Tech lost the 1st, 2nd, AND 4th Qrtrs. If Georgia has ANOTHER 26-0 3rd Qrtr, Tech barely wins by 3 again. that’s a pretty big “IF” to hang Ga Tech’s hopes on–good “luck” with that one, you’ll need it.

If Ga Tech Gets a 100 Yard Rusher?

November 24th, 2009
9:26 am

Gerogia’s D-Line is LOADED. Georgia has not given up a SINGLE 100 yard rusher this year in 10 games, not to Florida, nor LSU, nor Tenn, nor Auburn, nor Ok St. Nor even to the REAL #1 Offensive Genius, who can PASS AND RUN (Gus, Auburn, #1 ranked OC 2007 & 2008) Tate got less than 50).

If Ga Tech gets a 100 yard rusher, Tech would be the FIRST TEAM ALL YEAR, and we’ve faced some bruiser RB’s. ANOTHER pretty big IF the article FORGOT to mention.

If Ga Tech Passes for 300 Yards?

November 24th, 2009
9:30 am

If Georgia stops 100 yard rushers, like they have against everybody else this year, then Tech will have to get 300 yards with the PASS. Tech averages an NCAA low 130′ish passing yards a game, AND has the lowest QB pass completion % in the NCAA. Another big Ga Tech “IF”

If Ga Tech Has a Sudden Kicking Game Miracle?

November 24th, 2009
9:41 am

Ga Tech has had ALL kinds of problems with their field goals, and KO’s. To beat Georgia, they’ll SUDDENLY need to kick like Georgia does. Kicking game advantage: Georgia, by a landslide. Georgia will have GREAT field position ALL GAME LONG.

Yet, another if Ga Tech needs….

I’m a GT alum and season ticket holder since ‘87. UGa can win IF: they don’t turn the ball over; they play disciplined defense; be patient on offense; and the biggest IF – they can respond to in-game adversity (and for that matter good fortune). GT can score in bunches (remember 26 3rd qtr points?), and unless Tech puts the ball on the ground they will score. I’ve constantly told folks here in Alabama that if GT can hold their opponent to under 28 points we will win. That being said, if Chan was still coach I would be more nervous. With PJ I’m cautiously optimistic. I sat through the Bill Lewis era and watched Reggie Ball so it’s easy to not get over confident.

If Ga Tech Defense Holds Ga on Both Sides?

November 24th, 2009
9:53 am

Georgia is now balanced in the offensive attack. For Tech to win, Ealey, King, Green, Charles, and Cox will ALL have to have a bad game. They’ll have to hang their hopes on a Georgia complete meltdown in rushing AND passing. Statisitically is Ga Tech’s defense THAT good? Unless the Yech defense has a SUDDEN DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME, Tech will lose. Georgia has a “REAL” offense, with balance. Not too many teams have the personel to stop the run AND the pass. Tech’s hanging a LOT of hopes on a D that gave up BIG points and yardage to Georgia last year. If Tech’s DEFENSE is WEAK, ANYWHERE, they lose.

If Ga Tech Plays Like They Did Against LSU?

November 24th, 2009
10:00 am

Against LSU, Tech was routed 38 to 3. To beat an SEC team, they’ll SUDDENLY have to figure out how to fix that pathetic outing. LSU beata Georgia on a bad referee call that the SEC admitted they got wrong at the end of the game.

Common Opponent: LSU
Ga, won by 7 at the end on a bad call
Tech, Blowout, 38-3, after Johnson had WEEKS to prepare

If LSU ONLY beat Georgia by 7 on a last second score, and LSU beat Tech 38-3 when Johnson had weeks to prepare, dfoes anyone REALLY think Georgia is THAT different of a team than they were in the LSU game? Another Big “IF” Ga Tech needs.

If Ga Tech Is Caught Looking Ahead of Georgia?

Think Johnson’s coaches or players might be looking ahead to the NEXT opponent? If they do, they lose.

If Tech Can't Stop Corner Blitzes--They Lose!

Beware of Saban-like corner blitzes–real good for the triple option. Willie’s gonna dial up something special. Hard to take a pitch with a corner in your face all day, huh?

If Tech Can't Excecute the Dive--They Lose!

November 24th, 2009
1:32 pm

Bringing that dive against THIS Georgia frontline ain’t gonna be fun with the 3 future NFL D-Lineman there to greet them. Kind of risky, no one has gotten a 100 yard rusher this year yet on Willie’s D. Can Tech be the 1st all year?

Seen Willie's Resume?

November 24th, 2009
1:54 pm

2000 Central Mich. #1 in Pass Defense in the NCAA
2003 Helped set every kind of defensive record you can imagine
2005 8th in Scoring defense
2006 #5 in the NCAA in Pass Defense
2006 #8 in the NCAA in Total Defense

You get the idea.

2009?
Ga Tech has to hope Willie FORGOT HOW TO COACH. He hasn’t had a SINGLE 100 yard rusher in 2009. His defense is ranked #23 in the NCAA in total yards. He is brutal on 3rd down in 2009. He shut down the #1 offense a couple of weeks ago, Auburn’s Gus.

Willie didn’t forget how to coach defense, as his resume, and his 2009 stats prove.

Willie’s been kiling offenses 2000-2009 in the stats.

Call it crazy..I know…..but I’m calling for a beatdown of Tech.

High motivation/pride factor by UGA players, esp. seniors on this one…and learning from old mistakes (hopefully). We are NOT outmatched physically or athletically. That makes these games more unpredicatble…….

DAWG87,

Regarding your comments, below: Who do you think brings in that talent other than the current coaches? How many SEC championships has this staff won? How many did the three previous coaches win in the previous 20 years?

How many D1 NCAA championships has Coach Richt been a part and how many has Coach Johnson been a part of? Do you know ANYTHING about Coach Richt’s successes as a coach?

As far as I’m concerned, it’s only going to be a “long several years” if you continue to post your pathetic comments on any of the blogs that I read.

November 23rd, 2009

Still laughing that my fellow Dawg fans would actually post that Richt is a better coach than Johnson. Even a monkey as head coach would have a few great seasons with the talent advantage we have at Georgia.

There are actually UGA fans who think Richt is capabale of outcoaching Paul Johnson. Unbelievable. Do you people even watch the games or just buy the decals to put on your cars?

It’s going to be a LONG SEVERAL YEARS.

I am not sure how significant a strength of schedule argument is when you don’t beat anyone good on your tough schedule… If we had the same record or even close, then it may be relevant. UGA is underachieving again and yes coaching has to take the blame. GT has no excuses if it doesn’t take care of UGA this year, we will be the underachievers
