If you can’t put Kentucky away, that’s just sad

Joe Cox leaves the field after his second awful interception. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Wow, that was two really ugly quarters of football Georgia played in the second half Saturday night.

With the apparent focus of a 3-year-old child, the Dogs squandered a 20-6 halftime lead by turning the ball over four times.

How pathetic was it? When the Dogs got the ball back at midfield with just under 2 minutes left in order to tie up the game and Joe Cox proceeded to throw an interception on the very first play, nobody seemed surprised.

Which was uglier, his first interception or that second one? How’s that for a discussion point?

Longtime blog commenter Cuz, with whom I watched the game, summed it up pretty well when he said the second half was like a “greatest hits” of all the bad plays Mark Richt’s 2009 team has committed. Make that “greatest hurts.”

Special teams? Pretty awful, from Branden Smith’s fumble of the opening kickoff of the second half to the fact that Richt and Co. were so scared of giving up a long kickoff return that they routinely gave Kentucky the ball near midfield through a series of poorly covered pooch and squib kicks.

The offense? In the second half they acted like the ball was a hot potato. And when Kentucky made halftime adjustments to stuff the Dogs’ running game, Georgia seemed to be floundering. The Dogs had no sustained drive in the second half, with the only scoring drive consisting of two long passes. What happened to Orson Charles in the second half?

And while the defense was put in difficult short-field situations by the lousy kickoffs and offensive turnovers, the tackling at times was just horrendous. And on that dump screen pass that Kentucky turned into a long run down the sideline for a touchdown to tie the game at 27-27, Willie Martinez’s defense looked absolutely flat-footed.

It’s unfortunately been a hallmark of Richt teams that they have a tough time handling success, holding a lead and putting a team away. And that was even true with teams that were much more talented than this group.

There was plenty of blame to go around, but the bottom line is that this is a very poorly coached group of unmotivated players.

Remember the darkest days of the Goff and Donnan eras? It was that bad.

For once someone had spoken my thoughts very eloquently; dawgma is really posing a marvelous question? Yes, how and why does a Spirtual man, allow so much gangtype violence and total disreguard for rules, regulation, honor, disipline, and violence, mob type behavior go virtually un-punished and even made excuses for?!

What do y’all think about my roots rock Reggae Rastafarian Bryan Evans? He’s an undisciplined thug, and can’t play a lick of football, but that head ‘o hair really brings credit to UGA and the State of Georgia, doesn’t it Mr Evans?

Does anyone know John Gruden’s phone number? Gruden would not have let the (cancer) Martinez destroy the whole team. How about Suzanne Youclan as AD. She is a winner and will not tolerate losing and all Damon Evans is is a former player who has no business as AD. Why can’t we compete with Florida and Alabama, two names, Jeremy Foley and Mal Moore two real ADs who do not tolerate losing.

How do you go from playing five strong quarters to that b.s. that we all witnessed last night in the second half? Where were the adjustments? Where was the intensity? Where was the pride? When did we become a Div I-AA football team? Do we even have coaches, or has it just been reduced to one large tickle pile? This whole season has been an insult to everything that was Georgia football.
The players deserve better than what they are getting from this coaching staff. If they want a half-a$$ed effort every game, they can call my unemployed, still living at home at 42 cousin… He would do a better job than this Keystone Cop of a staff UGA has.

I have an uncle who graduated from Tech. When I was just a young boy my family would meet at my granma’s house near the Tech campus and walk to the games. So I grew up a Tech fan and still am. I have never liked UGA football but I do have to admit that the Vince Dooley teams had class. Dooley never showed up anyone. I remember Lars Tate or Tim Worley (can’t remember which one) did a “fade” into the end zone after a TD. Dooley yanked his butt out of the game, sat him on the bence and got in his face. We need more coaches like him and Bobby Dodd.

It’s going to be one hard fall for the classless Tech people if they lose next week. Bad enough being a Dawg fan right now, but lose to us as a heavy favorite and it’s going to hurt. That moron saint simons manages to disappear when we win or you lose and keep something in mind Jackets, every program, every program with no exceptions has an off year or two. Georgia has superior athletes, always has, always will and if you think this is a long term issue, think again. The more you gloat now, the more you are going to get it rubbed in your face with the next 8 or 9 year winning streak. Changes will be made, especially with the defensive philosophy and that Johnson high school offense that works so well in the powerful ;-) ACC is going to be shredded like cheap pork for years to come. Did you already forget last year against a very mediocre SEC team like LSU that ran you off the field? That was embarrasing wasn’t it sissy simons? What was that score again? Remember that team that beat you like a red headed step child was nothing more than an SEC whipping boy last year. I wouldn’t get so caught up in yourselves, yes the SEC is off this year but the ACC is still a big time joke and that is who you have been beating. Relevance and reality can be painful. Enjoy your brief visit to the top of the ACC which equals about fourth in the SEC.

This has to be the worst lost of a now terrible season. All of the feel good about this team from last weeks win was lost in the second half of the Ken. game. How do you lose to Ken? This was a total effort on behalf of the coaching staff you cant blame the defense for this lost. The same old problems keep occuring penalties and turnovers. Joe Coxs cannot be expected to win games he is not good enough to do this. Joe is fine when everything is going our way but at the first sign of trouble he goes south in a hurry aka the 2 terrible inteceptions he threw right to the defenders. This a young team with a lot of talanted players that is not getting any help from the entire coaching staff. No coach on this staff cannot be held accountable for what has happened this season. Orson Charles has a great first half and we go away from him completly in the second half nice job on your part Bobo of finding away to get him the ball. A pitch play on the one yard line what kind of call is that? Ealey or King could have ran a dive or went up over the top for the TD to tie the game once again great job of play calling. Smith had been a force all night in the first half nothing at all in the second half. Its like we only know one or two ways to get him the ball and once the defense make adjustments to stop those two plays we dont have an answer to their adjustments and cant use our talent in different plays. Special teams have been a joke all year. The return men need to learn how importantit is to hold on to the football this all goes back to coaching. Please just let Blair kick the ball as hard and deep as he possibly can and teach your coverage team to stay in their lanes and how to tackle.Forget the short pooch kick and the angle to the sidelines kick. I felt like we should have played the two freshmen QBs a long time ago and still think we would have been not only better this season but much better next season by letting these guys get game experience. Well you can forget about that now no time to waste a red shirt now just anither great coaching move by this staff. One last point why dont we take our FBs and move them to TEs where we can use there blocking and put in an extra wide reciever in and spread the field out a little more and open things up a little bit and forget about that out of date offense that we are still running oh i forgot that would take coaching to do something like that and thats the number one problem with this team COACHING or lack of.

Don’t dis the fans for leaving early. Back when we had the two Davids, we knew we still had a chance when it was a close game. Now however, we know we have no chance with this group of players and coaches. Why stay when you already know you will be disappointed and still have to face sitting in traffic. As an X-Marine, it is very obvious this team lacks the disccipline required for success. When you have year after year of top recruting classes and can only produce this year’s results, it is time for change. Keeping the same coaches will continue to produce the same results, no matter how good the new players are. Wake up Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sometimes think that the Dog Nation has extremely high expectations, and this season is the same. The Dawgs lost 80% of the offense, and for some apparent reason, the Nation expects the same results. Can the Nation just rebuild, and oh by the way, the rebuilding process just may be now. Florida will take a hit after Tebow leaves, Auburn is rebuilding after Campbell, Cadillac, and Brown. Damn, be patient. Your time will return. Hell Tech has rebuilding for years and look. Deanpg what gangtype violence? Thee was not one, ONE, player arrested this year for anything more that a stupid traffic offense. Coach Smith,
I am a Tech graduate and I wish the Tech fans would leave UGA alone, particularly today. I would like to point out, however, that your post at 1:40 a.m. today confirms that you are a doorknob.

Sanford Stadium is indeed huge, confirmed by the huge crowds leaving last night with 2 minutes left in an undecided game. Georgia raises huge dollars with its football program. It’s student enrollment is over twice the size of Tech’s yet Tech draws 60% of UGA’s average home football attendance. Also, while UGA makes great money in its football program the college endowment is now at a mere $600 million while Tech’s endowment is nearly 3 times that amount at over $1.6 billion. This with less than half of the number of alumni compared to that of UGA.

I really want the Tech fans to stop spewing about UGA football, especially when they are down. You’ve had a great run in this decade (although 2 SEC Championships in 26 years makes me wonder about your insisting that UGA is a premier program on a national basis) but the fact is that you have nothing to crow about even before last night’s game.

DJ – I guess you should know the CMR only goes to church on Easter and Christmas, hat must be the only two days out of 365 that you go. I wish everyone would lay off the spirituality. It has nothing to do with the performance of this football team. They (the players) melted down last night. The defense played well with the exception of a few plays. Bobo still amazes me with his play calling.

Come on Dawgs, pull yourself together and stop being so arrogant about who the team isn’t and understand who the team is. Richt has his butt against the wall, and he needs you to have his back. When he started a 5th year senior QB, who couldn’t start the four previous years, you had to know this could happen. It’s obvious that some coaches need to go, but you have to know you can get better ones first. Bobo should not be the offensive coordinator, and running that crossing pattern over and over is a good example, and finally KY was sitting on the route. Look around and see what’s happening as Auburn, Tech, Vols, Clemson, USC and a few others are hitting this state hard for recruits and Richt has to do a better job pulling some of these recruits back. I couldn’t believe the faces and actions of so many fans last night. Do you think the team couldn’t see that too, man up and be a real fan.

What happened to Orson Charles? Well, unlike Georgia, Kentucky has a defensive coordinator who’s able to adjust to what the opponent is doing. Unlike Georgia, they figured out how to cover the bootleg. Unlike Georgia, there’s actually reason for optimism at Kentucky. It’s pretty bad when your coaching staff gets schooled by Kentucky. Actually, schooled is the wrong word, because it implies that our staff might have learned something.

BuLLdog, even in your misery you can’t help but try and belittle Tech. Sagarin says their strength of schedule is 12th in the country. SEC powers Alabama and my Gators are 41st and 51st respectively.
Records of opponents is a false yardstick, since by definition most of your games are against your conference rivals, who will also play each other where one will win while the other loses.

Georgia may very well beat Tech next Saturday. However, that does not change the fact that so far Tech has played the 12th strongest schedule in the country and is 10 – 1. Georgia has played the 17th strongest schedule and is 6 – 5.
