If you can’t put Kentucky away, that’s just sad

Joe Cox leaves the field after his second awful interception. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Joe Cox leaves the field after his second awful interception. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Wow, that was two really ugly quarters of football Georgia played in the second half Saturday night.

With the apparent focus of a 3-year-old child, the Dogs squandered a 20-6 halftime lead by turning the ball over four times.

How pathetic was it? When the Dogs got the ball back at midfield with just under 2 minutes left in order to tie up the game and Joe Cox proceeded to throw an interception on the very first play, nobody seemed surprised.

Which was uglier, his first interception or that second one? How’s that for a discussion point?

Longtime blog commenter Cuz, with whom I watched the game, summed it up pretty well when he said the second half was like a “greatest hits” of all the bad plays Mark Richt’s 2009 team has committed. Make that “greatest hurts.”

Special teams? Pretty awful, from Branden Smith’s fumble of the opening kickoff of the second half to the fact that Richt and Co. were so scared of giving up a long kickoff return that they routinely gave Kentucky the ball near midfield through a series of poorly covered pooch and squib kicks.

The offense? In the second half they acted like the ball was a hot potato. And when Kentucky made halftime adjustments to stuff the Dogs’ running game, Georgia seemed to be floundering. The Dogs had no sustained drive in the second half, with the only scoring drive consisting of two long passes. What happened to Orson Charles in the second half?

And while the defense was put in difficult short-field situations by the lousy kickoffs and offensive turnovers, the tackling at times was just horrendous. And on that dump screen pass that Kentucky turned into a long run down the sideline for a touchdown to tie the game at 27-27, Willie Martinez’s defense looked absolutely flat-footed.

It’s unfortunately been a hallmark of Richt teams that they have a tough time handling success, holding a lead and putting a team away. And that was even true with teams that were much more talented than this group.

There was plenty of blame to go around, but the bottom line is that this is a very poorly coached group of unmotivated players.

Remember the darkest days of the Goff and Donnan eras? It was that bad.

”Football is one of our great American games. It is the duty and responsibility of each of us to see that it is kept in its proper perspective, and that it is protected. We should see that it is used to attain the objectives that mean so much to our way of life.
We feel that the spectator can be most influential and instrumental in helping to achieve these objectives, if he will develop the right attitudes. May we suggest a few?
First, and foremost among these attitudes that must be developed, is the realization that in football there must be a winner and a loser (excepting the occasional tie). The fan who recognizes this principle gets a great deal more enjoyment from the game than one who becomes irritated, aggravated, and rambunctious when “his” team loses. We would never minimize the importance of winning, but it is very unfair to the coach, the player, and the school when the fan forgets it is impossible to “repudiate the law of mathematics”–i.e., there must be a winner and a loser.
It is important that each of us develop the art of appreciating great plays made by the opposition. We should always give our opponents credit, rather than criticize our team when the opposition makes a great play. We believe perfection in the execution of a great play in football is to be admired and appreciated, just as we appreciate and admire the work of a great artist in any field.
The spectator should remember the football players are just human beings. They perform at times under great pressure, and they, as all other earthly inhabitants, are likely to make mistakes. It behooves all of us to remember, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.”
Finally, we should always keep uppermost in mind that football, with all its glamour, glitter, thrills and chills, plus everything that makes it great, has one thing more important than all of these combined–that is, the boy who plays it.”

coach smith – I would agree Richt came out of the gate strong – with Donnans players. And I will also agree that UGA certainly can generate the ad/merchandise revenue – you only have to walk down the streets of small town Georgia as proof. But as a GT fan, I could care less how much money my athletic department is generating – it’s like Lou Holtz (who I can’t really stand either) once said – fans don’t come to watch their teams play, they come to watch their teams win.
The fact is that Richt is a lousy coach and that was completely evident in his very early, be they successful years. Even back then, his clock management was as bad as I’ve ever seen – remember the Auburn loss at home?

But while UGA may have been a top 5-7 job 8 years ago, it’s simply not anymore. LIke I said, you barely make the top 5 in your own conference. Would you seriously put UGA over FL, AL, TN, and LSU – all of whom by the way have larger stadiums, larger budgets and more wins this year – hey, we may have 4 national championships in the last 100 years, but does anyone care? It’s about about what have you done for me lately.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but Techies will have to carry the torch for the State of Georgia. You guys aren’t used to being near the top so don’t blow it. And try not to get into any fights next week because as we’ve proved the last two years we are really good at fighting during the game.

The funniest thing that is not so funny if you think about it was the comment made by someone saying the reason UGA 7 died was this team killed him. Wow the 2nd half put many of us closer to the grave???

I agree with the comment of the second half being a reflections video of the whole season so far. Dissapointing year to say the least.

Coach Smith – I agree, UGA was preseason #1 and probably should have been with all those recruits. So since you don’t think I know anything, why don’t you tell me what’s going on at UGA. And don’t tell me it’s Willie D – he might be part fo the problem, but he’s not that only problem. It’s Richt. All his teams are undisciplined and always have been, on and off the field. Have you seen coach Johnson on the gameday and on the sideline? Who do you think demands the respect of his players more – Richt or Johnson? I don’t think I’ve ever seen Richt get upset on gameday. I saw Johnson about take a kids head off for a false start against wake forest! I would hate to see a great coach in Athens. Richts has several problems, but it’s like Mark Bradley wrote, his biggest problem is ‘Paul Johnson’.

There are two problems with the current poll on the main UGA page. First, someone misspelled “devastating”. Second, “Georgia Tech” was not listed as an option!

As fans, many of the most passionate among us have a tendency to look at an ugly loss such as the Kentucky game and think the sky is falling. Because of that I try not to get too carried away with wanting to see coaching heads roll in the off-season, etc. But I have to say, this loss has me very concerned about the direction of the program. Losses like this hurt fan enthusiasm and lead to empty seats. They can cause a team to lose faith in the coaching staff, similar to what happened to Coach Donnan, and when that happens the wheels start to come off quickly. If Richt makes changes to the coaching staff and if they in turn put together another highly-regarded recruiting class I will feel better that perhaps this season was a rebuilding year, an aberration. But those are big ifs as this point.

I am a BAMA fan. I am not trying to be funny or rub anything in, but I feel that CMR worst coaching decisions was allowing you guys to wear those black uniforms last year against BAMA. Even though many of you guys did not know it, a coach knows when his team is not physically on the same level as another team. in that case you have to coach them a little different. You dont coach them up the same that game, throw some black jerseys on and make them think they are ready to win. That is the night that UGA football lost a lot more than a game. Some may disagree, but it took something out of CMR and the whole team.

What’s the stat about Georgia teams giving up more than 30 points in their history? Something like since Willie Martinez has become defensive coordinator Georgia has allowed 30 or more points more times in four years than it did in its entire football history before him.

November 22nd, 2009

I think Herschel Talker posted the best comments other than Bill’s analysis about what is wrong with the UGA program. People can’t fix problems until they ADMIT they have one. I have been a UGA fan since the Dooley era. But right now, Temple & Navy get more votes to the Top 25 polls than UGA! Who in their right sane mind thinks that FACT is acceptable? Anyone ready to say colleges like that recruit better players than UGA? So it must be Coaching! It’s great to support your team win or loose, but blind denial of the obvious problems will surely mean supporting more losses that wins.
How many folks want next year to look like this year, same coaching staff & philosophy? Well, if you keep doing what you have been doing, you WILL keep getting what you have been getting. Just wait and see if that is not true. Stay on this course, and I guarantee we all will be writing the same things this time next year after another senseless season of wasteful losses.

Yep Kentucky played great. 127 yards rushing and 138 passing. Georgia in a loss had 195 yards rushing and 292 passoing. I give Kentucky the win and admit Cobb is a good player. But we shot ourselves in the foot so often we had to reload.

And Rob…
And in two lines you pointed out why so many people are taking so much joy watching the freefall in Athens and the torment resulting in UGA fans. They are never ever humbled or contrite. Cobb and Locke are very good players. Even when superior teams like Florida and Alabama pound the stew out of you, you still talk garbage… The Tech thing I understand a bit, they were lost for a very long time. But goodness, they are not looking ahead to Clemson, they have had Nov. 28th circled on the calendar and are hitching their pants a little tighter for Saturday night with “their high school offense.” Somebody put this way to me, you know the wife or girlfriend that may not be the most beautiful woman, but she is the best person you’ll ever meet? Everybody keeps running after the beauty queen who always ignores you, demeans you, uses you, or just lets you down… Well that is the University of Georgia, it looks great on paper or on your wall; but when you need something to support you, hold you up, lift your spirit, that is what you want!!! Think about that, even though it i just a game, that is so true…

BuLLdawg

So, what would you say we need the most ?

Obviously, the crowds at Sanford Stadium think we need a new Offensive Coordinator. We haven’t had one since Coach Richt gave up calling the plays, calling himself CEO now.

Clearly, the world knows that Willie Martinez is surely gone after 2 more games. Goodbye to that soft zone crap. Back to playing football on defense for UGA.

We haven’t taught our Quarterbacks how to value the football. Tonight, yet again, we sling the football from the 3-yard line at a back at most 8 inches away. And, after calling 3 timeouts and having the Kentucky running back run out of bounds with 2 minutes to go in the game losing by a score, we throw the football directly to the Kentucky player standing right there in clear view with 2 minutes left and us at mid-field.

We haven’t had a running back, and didn’t recruit one this last recruiting class either. We yanked the redshirt off Washaun Ealey after half the season was already lost. We have no idea who our starting tailback is. We haven’t known all season. We just sit there and put one in then another, then another, then scrap all them and yank the redshirt off another, and then basically give the starting tailback job back to the guy we gave it to to begin with. Make no doubts about this, Washaun Ealey fumble at the goal line cost us the Kentucky game. And, his 55-yard scamper was called back on not 1 but 2 penalties, and should have been 3 penalties.

Ken Malcome of Decatur. That is the only running back we have recruited for next season, either. Only the 20th best player in the state and only the 24th best running back. The entire Top 25 all recruited a better running back then Ken Malcome. Don’t we need a top running back ? Is Ken Malcome really it ? 4.6 in the 40-yard dash, this guy has no speed folks. We’ve got 5 of them now like that at tailback.

BuLLdawg

November 22nd, 2009
7:07 am

That is the ONLY running back we have recruited for next season. God Almighty Above.

We have zero cover guys in our secondary, coached by Willie Martinez himself. Well, maybe Rambo, but we can’t figure it out who our good players are, and keep him on the sidelines anyway.

I would say that it is patently obvious that we need Offensive Linemen. The ones we have now are NOT getting the job done. They jump off-sides on every snap count, like they don’t know what the snap count is. They cannot block for the pass, so instead of having a tailback who is a tailback, our tailback has to be a blocker instead first or he can’t get on the damn field. And, we haven’t blocked one play all season long for a running play. We are Number 100 at running the ball. There are 100 teams in America better at blocking for the run than we are.

2, so we have recruited exactly 2 Offensive Linemen.

We have 2 Tight Ends on the entire roster. 2. Unless you want to try to tell me that Aron White is a Tight End, who tonight dropped every pass again thrown directly to him.

The play calls are not to get the ball to our Tight Ends anyway. Even with no AJ Green, we seemingly prefer to throw the football to our Opponents as Interceptions. We have no clue on play calls. 3rd and long escapes us.

So, have we recruited 1 single solitary Tight End ? Uh, no sir.

2 who will be Sophomores next season, and no other Tight End, and we have bothered to recruit none. Idiot “coaching staff.”

We have 2 Fullbacks who are both juniors next year, and none others on the roster. So, you would think we have recruited at least 1 Fullback right ? Wrong. You are wrong to think that too.

Tell me how great this damned “coaching staff” of Coach Richt’s really is please ?
