Uga VII’s reign the shortest of the line

Uga VII. (

Uga VII. (

The death of Uga VII, who was officially introduced as to UGA fans at the Georgia Southern game in Athens on Aug. 30, 2008, makes his tenure the shortest of the Uga line of pure-bred white English bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler of Savannah.

Previously, Uga II, who was mascot from 1966 to 1972, held that distinction. The Seilers have provided UGA’s mascots since 1956 and generally have served about nine years each.

At 56 and a half pounds, Uga VII, whose official name was “Uga VI’s Loran’s Best,” was second only to Uga VI as the biggest mascot in the line. He was 4 years old.

The Ugas are among the nation’s most popular and celebrated college mascots, especially with the TV networks that cover football. Uga V was perhaps the biggest “celebrity” of the line, having had a role playing his father in the film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and been named America’s best college mascot by Sports Illustrated.

Uga VII’s time with the Bulldogs was too brief to make much of an impression other than the initial one of him asleep in his air-conditioned doghouse at Sanford Stadium during a game. In a statement released by UGA, Seiler said, “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

I’m assuming that, as with the other Ugas, he will be buried inside Sanford Stadium — an honor apparently not given to any other college sports mascot. There will be no live mascot at Georgia’s game on Saturday but a wreath will be placed on Uga VII’s doghouse on the north sideline, UGA announced.

One question still to be answered is whether the Seilers have another pure white dog in the line to take Uga VII’s place. When Uga IV died, there was no suitable heir in place (all his sons were considered too old), but it turned out that a mate was expecting and the pup that became Uga V was the ony all-white male in the litter. Similarly, when an aging Uga III became ill, he had no pure white heir but a last mating produced a single all-white male. Update: According to UGA, Seiler said there were options available for Uga VII’s replacement but no final determination would be made until sometime next year.

It should be remembered that in addition to serving as UGA mascots, the Ugas are family pets of the Seilers, and our condolences go out to them on the loss of the latest damn good dog to wear the famed red sweater.

Dawg27, your response to the gator fan was PRICELESS! I’m sorry to hear about UGA VII…. may he live an eternity of belly scratches and sirloins!!!

On a side note…anyone mocking the loss of this mascot’s life is EXACTLY why this world can suck so bad at times. I’m saddened by your pathetic existence!

According to the autopsy, Uga VII committed suicide. He apparently couldn’t stand the thought of getting stomped by TECH…AGAIN.

Damn Good Dawg UGA VII. Once again it feels like we have lost a family member. Anyone who owns and loves a dog knows the sense of loss when they die. One more thing; to all you Gator fans posting on this site I have one thing to say to you ROLL TIDE (I don’t care if they are from the west).

Memo to Damon Evans: I have a pit bull or two left. Don’t you think the team needs a more aggressive symbol than an overweight English bulldog that can hardly walk and never gets enthusiastic (except for the dog at Auburn)? Take one of my dogs who have been through the school of hard knocks and you will have a mascot that inspires aggressiveness instead of passiveness of the line of bulldogs.

Fix my email account, ya $40k/year geek!

“m”- Wow! Such wit. Hey dude, take the hint…your fellow Tech bloggers think YOU are a complete tool.

I’m sure you feel angst because your grades were not good enough to get into UGA or GT, so you feel by attaching yourself to Tech some of the brains will rub off on you, huh?

Good luck with exams at Perimeter, your GPA will still not be good enough to transfer out of your low life existence.

That sounds right in line with their season. I am glad to see that people aren’t graveling and blubbering like they did with the last Uga. Maybe they shouldn’t feed the next one red meat.

It was a sad day in Athens, with the update on Chance Veazey and the death of UGA VII. You people can make jokes all you want. (You can see why our country is in the shape its in, there’s and time to joke and a time not to). I just believe UGA VII just gave his own life to go be with the Lord and try to get a miracle for Chance. Chance, you hang in there, we are praying for you and your family. UGA VII REST IN PEACE.

Good bye Big Dawg

I am sad for Uga and Ga. However the Seiler family does a bad job of raising the dogs. Bulldogs are supposed to live about 10 years. When is the last time we had a Uga that even came close? The school ought to take responsibility for the care of Uga. The family over feeds him and he they don’t take him out for walks. Isn’t that a formula for a short life span? Don’t believe me, go look at pictures of all the Uga’s.

Poor UGA VII. His little ole heart couldn’t take watching this crappy team under-perform any more so his little heart gave out. For all the Tech fans, UGA may be dead, but at least you can’t kill UGA’S mascot with a rolled up newspaper or a can of Raid.

Top 10 College Mascots

1. Uga (Bulldog), University of Georgia.
Only mascot to attend the Heisman Award ceremonies. Hershel Walker said UGA looked better in 5a tux than he did. Sport Illustrated number 1 mascot. Bonus points for attacking an Auburn Football player during a game.

Voted #1 mascot by SI and it’s readers for 5 years running.
Now, if UGA could be reanked #1 again in the end of the year polls some time.

Too much inbreeding killed me!

“Most purebred breeds that exist today were created in the late 1800s from older dog types by selective breeding and rigorous culling.[21] This created a genetic bottleneck that will at some point render breeding from closed stud books unviable.”

I think it’s a cover up. I believe Coach Willie was recruiting in Savannah and Uga VII was a little to close to the road. Then comes along Coach Bobo. He see’s Uga in the street. He thinks he will get Uga to the vet. Backing up his 73 Chevy PU he, uh– well uh– that was no speed break you hit Mike!!
