Uga VII’s reign the shortest of the line

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

The death of Uga VII, who was officially introduced as to UGA fans at the Georgia Southern game in Athens on Aug. 30, 2008, makes his tenure the shortest of the Uga line of pure-bred white English bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler of Savannah.

Previously, Uga II, who was mascot from 1966 to 1972, held that distinction. The Seilers have provided UGA’s mascots since 1956 and generally have served about nine years each.

At 56 and a half pounds, Uga VII, whose official name was “Uga VI’s Loran’s Best,” was second only to Uga VI as the biggest mascot in the line. He was 4 years old.

The Ugas are among the nation’s most popular and celebrated college mascots, especially with the TV networks that cover football. Uga V was perhaps the biggest “celebrity” of the line, having had a role playing his father in the film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and been named America’s best college mascot by Sports Illustrated.

Uga VII’s time with the Bulldogs was too brief to make much of an impression other than the initial one of him asleep in his air-conditioned doghouse at Sanford Stadium during a game. In a statement released by UGA, Seiler said, “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

I’m assuming that, as with the other Ugas, he will be buried inside Sanford Stadium — an honor apparently not given to any other college sports mascot. There will be no live mascot at Georgia’s game on Saturday but a wreath will be placed on Uga VII’s doghouse on the north sideline, UGA announced.

One question still to be answered is whether the Seilers have another pure white dog in the line to take Uga VII’s place. When Uga IV died, there was no suitable heir in place (all his sons were considered too old), but it turned out that a mate was expecting and the pup that became Uga V was the ony all-white male in the litter. Similarly, when an aging Uga III became ill, he had no pure white heir but a last mating produced a single all-white male. Update: According to UGA, Seiler said there were options available for Uga VII’s replacement but no final determination would be made until sometime next year.

It should be remembered that in addition to serving as UGA mascots, the Ugas are family pets of the Seilers, and our condolences go out to them on the loss of the latest damn good dog to wear the famed red sweater.

stiggy, my only son, (questionable) I told you that you did’nt have to perform those “favors” to repay your debt but you insisted, saying that you didn’t mind even though i offered to loan you the money. Honey, i really don’t care if you want to wear my drawers but at least wash them before you put them back in my closet. The odor is unbearable.

It’s just jealousy on the part of the Gator and Tech fans. UGA VII was cute and cuddley. How cute and cuddley is a freaking bee and a gator. They aren’t known for doing anything but hurting anyone that comes near them. RIP you damn good hairy dawg.

Sincere condolences to the Seiler family from a GT grad (EE 81) living in Chicago. My son is a HUGE Dawg fan (takes after his mother) and we gave him a framed picture of UGA VII last Christmas to add to his collection of past UGAs. I also have a nephew on the football team who attended the ceremony for UGA VI last year with the other players–don’t belittle UGA to those guys. As a dog owner for 20 years, I know losing a pet is like losing a member of the family, especially one as young as Loren’s Best who dies unexpectedly. Everyone posting anything other than condolences, best wishes, and RIPs not only lack class, but have never experienced the true joy of owning and loving a dog who returns your love unconditionally. I suggest you read some of Lewis Grizzard’s old writings about his dag Catfish–he was as good as anyone about explaining what ya’ll obviously don’t get. RIP Loren’s Best.

This creature was a CRIME against nature!!! Look at what an english bulldog should look like vs. what this mutant looked like. Uga could barely stand, let alone walk … breeding dogs to look like this is unethical.

Son, does ANYONE know a Tech fan?

Also, you know the rule in our home, the one one that we never speak of, the one about UGA owning us by 20 games for the series, the series that none of us loser Techies will ever see the reversal of dominance within the series, in our lifetimes. But we do have our 3 point victory last year, the first in 8 yrs to boast about. We just have a few dys left to enjoy it before another 8 year drought. Drink up son.

You choked against Wake Forest, WAKE Forest! You choked then and and you’ll choke again come the big game just like the Chick-fil-a bowl last year when LSU ripped your little stingers right out.

Paul’s Johnson, you’re kidding right? How the hell can you consider UGA relevant? The real Paul Johnson has the best record in the history of our school at this stage in his career. Pretty damn good considering this is better than William Alexander, John Heisman, Bobby Dodd, and Bobby Ross. Get use to losing to us. You may not live long enough to see UGA beat Tech again.

Stinger – One successful year and now UGA is not relevant. I’ve know numerous Tech grads and they all have one thing in common – arrogance. What the heck do they teach down on the flats at the North Ave Technical School that makes you guys think you are so great? Watch how fast that Johnson leaves Tech the minute someone comes with more money. Just like he did at GSU and Navy. he claims he’s here to stay, BS! he a money man more he can get the better he’ll like it. And, Tech does not have the money to keep him here. I think they wrote a song about your delusion, Dream ON.
