Uga VII’s reign the shortest of the line

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

The death of Uga VII, who was officially introduced as to UGA fans at the Georgia Southern game in Athens on Aug. 30, 2008, makes his tenure the shortest of the Uga line of pure-bred white English bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler of Savannah.

Previously, Uga II, who was mascot from 1966 to 1972, held that distinction. The Seilers have provided UGA’s mascots since 1956 and generally have served about nine years each.

At 56 and a half pounds, Uga VII, whose official name was “Uga VI’s Loran’s Best,” was second only to Uga VI as the biggest mascot in the line. He was 4 years old.

The Ugas are among the nation’s most popular and celebrated college mascots, especially with the TV networks that cover football. Uga V was perhaps the biggest “celebrity” of the line, having had a role playing his father in the film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and been named America’s best college mascot by Sports Illustrated.

Uga VII’s time with the Bulldogs was too brief to make much of an impression other than the initial one of him asleep in his air-conditioned doghouse at Sanford Stadium during a game. In a statement released by UGA, Seiler said, “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

I’m assuming that, as with the other Ugas, he will be buried inside Sanford Stadium — an honor apparently not given to any other college sports mascot. There will be no live mascot at Georgia’s game on Saturday but a wreath will be placed on Uga VII’s doghouse on the north sideline, UGA announced.

One question still to be answered is whether the Seilers have another pure white dog in the line to take Uga VII’s place. When Uga IV died, there was no suitable heir in place (all his sons were considered too old), but it turned out that a mate was expecting and the pup that became Uga V was the ony all-white male in the litter. Similarly, when an aging Uga III became ill, he had no pure white heir but a last mating produced a single all-white male. Update: According to UGA, Seiler said there were options available for Uga VII’s replacement but no final determination would be made until sometime next year.

It should be remembered that in addition to serving as UGA mascots, the Ugas are family pets of the Seilers, and our condolences go out to them on the loss of the latest damn good dog to wear the famed red sweater.

Damn Good Dawg!
Georgia actually played a little defense against a quality team, and I guess it threw poor UGA into cardiac arrest.

PRESIDENT OBAMA ADDRESSES NATION IN WAKE OF UGA VII’S PASSING

“Today is a sad day for America. Our beloved collegiate mascot, UGA VII, passes away. Also, plush cartoon Gator outfits sit unused on bookstore shelves. Now is the time to pass much needed stimulus.” Added the President, “I just got back from China. It smelled better than Jacksonville. That place is like… WHOA”

Sorry trade bait, but UGA has had very much a “dog life”. Living with Sonny, and being admired by thousands to boot. Better than your average dog’s life. R.I.P. UGA VII !

Ok , if you think we r overreacting to the death of UGA then save your breath. He is a symbol and proud figuer of this university. THE most recognized mascot in America. I always wondered if he was healthy though. He didnt patrol the sidelines like his daddy. UGA 6 got after people and barked the whole game. UGA 7 was very lacsidasicle and was just there. We saw him at the G day game and he just looked exhausted just from riding. He was a beautiful specimen of an animal and he will be missed. Bring on a new era .

Baylie had hopes of meeting UGA VII on Saturday. She sends her condolences with mine to the Seiler family. We have lost a mascot, they have lost a member of the family. Anyone who does not think that has never owned a dog.

Why all this fuss over a dog? Because this dog was a DAWG!!!

I feel bad that UGA died but I hear that these family UGA dawgs have a congential defect, especially with fluid and lung and heart problems, so maybe we might wanna do some tests on the next UGA before he takes over. On another note I hope This is not a curse thats taken over at Georgia. With coaching of Willie Martinez and the play of Joe Cox and UGAs death…. I guess bad things do come in 3s.

J-MAN — you’re an idiot. Study up on purebred dogs before posting your ignorance. Also, you may want to reread (if you can) the first sentence of the article announcing his death. It reads “A week after a clean bill of health…”

Also, my apologies to Gen Neyland for painting you with the same brush as the rest of your orange comrades. Thanks for your sympathy. I hope Dawg fans are as considerate when St. Peter schedules his interview with Smokey.

On the playing field I HATE UGA, howver I have always loved Uga and been somewhat jealous of not having a great live mascot on the playing field. Losing a beloved mascot like Uga is something the Tech fans will never have to endure. All good jackets should have enough class to know when to stop a rivalry– In the case of the death of a beloved member of the family “clean ole fashioned hate” should not exist. My heart goes out to the Dawg Nation I hope that ya’ll are able to find an heir that is as beautiful as Uga VII. RIP to a damn good dog– even if he couldn’t chose his team.

Rectal Bleeding

This is a byproduct of over breeding. This breed in particular is a planned mutation that has a slim chance at a long healthy life. No more living mascots and no more breeding of this dog. If you found Michael Vicks actions abhorrent, then you should feel the same way about this poor over bred dog.

This TECH fan is sorry to hear of the passing of UGA VII. I might not be a “Dawg” fan, but I do sympathize with the family who has lost a beloved pet as well as the fans who loved him so much. It’s a shame that some people have to make a joke of his death.

Rectal Bleeding

Healthy dogs live longer than 4 years. THis was not a healthy dog, but a over bred mutation. Now is the best time to stop having live mascots to prevent the suffering they endure.

There’s something fishy here. How does a supposedly well-cared-for young dog die of a “heart attack.” C’mon, dawg fans. I can see calling for Martinez’s head, but assassinating your own mascot, just because of his miserable record? That’s low even for a dawg. I demand an NCAA investigation.
