Uga VII’s reign the shortest of the line

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

The death of Uga VII, who was officially introduced as to UGA fans at the Georgia Southern game in Athens on Aug. 30, 2008, makes his tenure the shortest of the Uga line of pure-bred white English bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler of Savannah.

Previously, Uga II, who was mascot from 1966 to 1972, held that distinction. The Seilers have provided UGA’s mascots since 1956 and generally have served about nine years each.

At 56 and a half pounds, Uga VII, whose official name was “Uga VI’s Loran’s Best,” was second only to Uga VI as the biggest mascot in the line. He was 4 years old.

The Ugas are among the nation’s most popular and celebrated college mascots, especially with the TV networks that cover football. Uga V was perhaps the biggest “celebrity” of the line, having had a role playing his father in the film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and been named America’s best college mascot by Sports Illustrated.

Uga VII’s time with the Bulldogs was too brief to make much of an impression other than the initial one of him asleep in his air-conditioned doghouse at Sanford Stadium during a game. In a statement released by UGA, Seiler said, “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

I’m assuming that, as with the other Ugas, he will be buried inside Sanford Stadium — an honor apparently not given to any other college sports mascot. There will be no live mascot at Georgia’s game on Saturday but a wreath will be placed on Uga VII’s doghouse on the north sideline, UGA announced.

One question still to be answered is whether the Seilers have another pure white dog in the line to take Uga VII’s place. When Uga IV died, there was no suitable heir in place (all his sons were considered too old), but it turned out that a mate was expecting and the pup that became Uga V was the ony all-white male in the litter. Similarly, when an aging Uga III became ill, he had no pure white heir but a last mating produced a single all-white male. Update: According to UGA, Seiler said there were options available for Uga VII’s replacement but no final determination would be made until sometime next year.

It should be remembered that in addition to serving as UGA mascots, the Ugas are family pets of the Seilers, and our condolences go out to them on the loss of the latest damn good dog to wear the famed red sweater.

Another note just in!

“I only hope that UGA VII accepted Tim Tebow into his heart before his passing. Tim Tebow, the Compassionate, the Merciful, the All-Knowing, Creator of Heaven and Earth. (Peace Be Upon Him)

Gator fans, just imagine if one of your players lost a hand, so he was no longer able to gouge eyes, or fire AK-47s in the air, or steal dead girls’ credit cards…. that’s how we feel with the loss of UGA.

That said, how old was he, 4? Hopefully this will motivate them to revert back to the old breeding standards.

Its just a dog. It was dog abuse anyways to leave that dog out there to watch GA play football. UGA is not the most popular mascot.

It’s hard for Dawg fans to lecture any fan base. When Tebow got his concussion you all were happier than a bus full of ‘mos headed to pride fest. It was celebrated all over the state.

A damn good dawg. RIP Loran’s Best. To those who come on here bashing. Take your trash somewhere else please. UGA serves as our beloved mascot. In reality he belongs to the Seilers but as part of the bulldawg nation he belongs to all of us. He is the symbol of our great unviversity and served it well with pride and dignity. To be part of that bulldawg nation is a privilege. You may not understand if you are not part of this nation but to those of us who are know exactly what our Dog is. Glory Glory to Ole Georgia We will miss your Loran’s Best and as always Go Dawgs!

That is a bold face lie Bizzle. Ask my friend Gatorzone. None of my friends wished any ill will on Tebow. We all wished him a speedy recovery. Why do you lie so, what guilt are you trying to assuage.

Okay JaxGator, what mascot is the most beloved. Sports Illustrated said that UGA was the greatest mascot. You got a problem with that.

Condolences to the family, and UGA nation. It is truly a sad thing when a pet dies much less one that means so much to so many people.

UGA VII was the only one I ever really liked (0-1 vs GT)

But really hope He’s up in doggy heaven with the rest of his Family.

Im a UGA grad and a huge Dawg fan. That said, dont you think it’s a little over the top to have a memorial guest book set up for UGA VII? If you address UGA’s condolences to his family; who reads it to them? Poor Mama Dawg just said “Damn!!I gotta drop another all white puppy..it’s gonna be a long Christmas”.

Im guessing that there are gonna be funny Tech fans signing that book.

UGA VII, God rest his soul, always seemed lethargic IMO and looked more like a Char Pei (sp?) than a Bulldog. Im looking for a little more spunk in the next one.

I have been in the sunshine state for a few and just got back. The hubby told me about Baylie.

But I am saddened at the news of UGA VII he was so cutie and will be sorely missed.

To Sonny, Swann and the Seiler family…our thoughts are with you…not many people get to ride the elevator with him every weekend…Gameday….what a great tradition to have these dawgs represent the Bulldog Nation. Yes, it has been a rough year, and along with UGA VII we will rise again. The Georgia Center will be hurting a little, but, the sun will come up and hopefully Georgia has a great victory over Kentucky…

There were five people on an airplane that was going down and there were only 4 parachutes. The pilot said I’ve got to have one so I can survive and tell the FAA what caused this crash, the doctor said I’ve got to take one because I am so valuable to saving lives, JAXGATOR took one and said I’ve got to take one because I am the smartest person in the world. That left a preacher and a little boy. The preacher told the little boy to take the last one because being a preacher he knew he was right with lord and he would go to heaven. The little boy (named Herschel) said that’s okay preacher there are two left. JAXGATOR jumped with my back pack.
