Uga VII’s reign the shortest of the line

Uga VII. (Georgiadogs.com)

The death of Uga VII, who was officially introduced as to UGA fans at the Georgia Southern game in Athens on Aug. 30, 2008, makes his tenure the shortest of the Uga line of pure-bred white English bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler of Savannah.

Previously, Uga II, who was mascot from 1966 to 1972, held that distinction. The Seilers have provided UGA’s mascots since 1956 and generally have served about nine years each.

At 56 and a half pounds, Uga VII, whose official name was “Uga VI’s Loran’s Best,” was second only to Uga VI as the biggest mascot in the line. He was 4 years old.

The Ugas are among the nation’s most popular and celebrated college mascots, especially with the TV networks that cover football. Uga V was perhaps the biggest “celebrity” of the line, having had a role playing his father in the film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and been named America’s best college mascot by Sports Illustrated.

Uga VII’s time with the Bulldogs was too brief to make much of an impression other than the initial one of him asleep in his air-conditioned doghouse at Sanford Stadium during a game. In a statement released by UGA, Seiler said, “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

I’m assuming that, as with the other Ugas, he will be buried inside Sanford Stadium — an honor apparently not given to any other college sports mascot. There will be no live mascot at Georgia’s game on Saturday but a wreath will be placed on Uga VII’s doghouse on the north sideline, UGA announced.

One question still to be answered is whether the Seilers have another pure white dog in the line to take Uga VII’s place. When Uga IV died, there was no suitable heir in place (all his sons were considered too old), but it turned out that a mate was expecting and the pup that became Uga V was the ony all-white male in the litter. Similarly, when an aging Uga III became ill, he had no pure white heir but a last mating produced a single all-white male. Update: According to UGA, Seiler said there were options available for Uga VII’s replacement but no final determination would be made until sometime next year.

It should be remembered that in addition to serving as UGA mascots, the Ugas are family pets of the Seilers, and our condolences go out to them on the loss of the latest damn good dog to wear the famed red sweater.

Gator Fan is not real. Get familiar people. Someone is just trying to fan the flames and make you hate Florida more (if that’s possible).

Baylie and I just got back from Atlanta after picking up tickets to the Skybox on Saturday at Sanford. We are extremely greatful to the AJC and the fans who voted for Baylie as the Ultimate Fan. But with the news of UGA VII passing, Baylie and I are saddened. Our condolences to the Seiler family. RIP UGA VII. Bring on UGA VIII. The Once and Future King.

Since Uga VIII probably won’t be ready until next year, I’d love to see one of Uga’s brothers take over sideline duties for the rest of the season but not take on the “Uga” name. (…just like when Otto filled in for the injured Uga IV.)

There is certainly not another mascot in this country that is more loved than our beautiful UGA’s and as much as I shouldn’t be surprised, comments like those from these “classless” Gators and Techies are sickening.

RIP UGA VII. All fans of college football mourn the loss of a great mascot (maybe even second only to Bevo, ;) ) and a great dog.

The flags are at half mast on Garden Ave in Detroit. An optimist would look at it as he served nearly 14 years.

Condolences to us all, the bulldawg nation.

bigreddawg – UGA calling Tech fans classless? Would you prefer to be the pot or the kettle for the purpose of this conversation.

But irony aside, I’m sorry that the Seilers lost their family pet.

Gator and Tech fans don’t know what it’s like to have the most recognized mascot in America, thus they have no clue what Uga means to the Dawg Nation. Heck with them.

Farewell Uga VII.

Considering I don’t find this an appropriate time to start a debate on mascots, I’ll just let that slide.

I hope the Dawgs can win at least a couple more this season in UGA VII’s memory.

Someone should shave Gator Fan’s mullet and chest hair, take away his gold chains, jorts and wife-beater T, and empty the Natural Light from his 30-year old fridge. Heck, reposses his trailer in the Ocala National Forest as well. If you really want to rock his world, take away his carton of Marlboro Reds. Then maybe he’ll know what it is to lose something close to him.

RIP, UGA VII. In doggie heaven you will meet many UGAs, most of whom knew plenty of wins over Florida during their reign on earth. There’s a reason why we still have a significant lead in the overall series. I’d start with UGA III.

There will be a lot of people in Athens looking toward Savannah for a plume of pure-white smoke and UGA VIII…

It is not a surprise that when all you have for a mascot is a stinking slimey lizards Gators fans will take pride in the loss of a real school mascot…its thier style of life!

With that said…We shall mourn the loss of a great and loyal mascot. While not the longest living in the line, he was the blood and flesh of the great UGA’s that we have grown to love. May our memories of him bring pride to the BullDog Nation, and may his spirit live on within all of us that stand and with pride say…GO DAWGS!!

Quite to the contrary, I do have lots of Tech friends and frankly would like to see you riding high every year when we play you….and win. But, you have to agree that you have some of your people showing a total lack of class in some of these comments and if i were you, I would be ashamed!
