The area near UGA's famed Arch is still being trashed by tailgaters. (University of Georgia)
It seems the message that UGA President Michael Adams sent to tailgaters back in September about picking up their trash before they leave campus after a football game has only been partially received.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that while the pleas not to turn the campus into a dumping ground have resulted in improvements in some tailgating areas, things have not improved on the North Campus quads near the university Arch, where the crowd is largely made up of students.
Speaking of last weekend’s Auburn game, George Stafford, UGA’s associate vice president for auxiliary and administrative services, said: “Saturday was a bad day. North Campus was as crowded as it’s ever been and the trash was awful.”
The problem has been exacerbated by the increase in night games in Athens, which means more time for tailgating and drinking.
“We’re very concerned about it,” Stafford told the Chronicle. “There’s so much time for people to gather and party. … So many of them are drinking, and when [alcohol] is consumed, good judgment goes out the window.”
Since the appeals to the tailgaters’ better nature haven’t worked, UGA is probably going to have to start issuing citations for littering and public drunkenness in order to get the message across. Or maybe even restrict access to the quads and charge a fee for the right to tailgate there.
“I don’t know what the next step is,” Stafford told the Augusta paper. “But I can tell you that nothing is off the table.”
What do you think? Should the university deploy cops on North Camps to crack down on the idiot behavior there? Is it time to charge a fee for the right to set up on the quads?

North campus is hallowed ground and should be treated as such by everyone who has the privilege to set foot on it. They should ban tailgating on the north quad area, period. Do whatever administration controls are necessary to stop this. As an Athans native, and an ‘81 grad, this really sickens me.

What do you expect when you get 80,000 hammered hillbilly’s in one place for six hours?
Just try to control the uninating and deficating in public. That’s about as good as we can do.
Or we could ask for proof of a diploma from UGA before being allowed to tailgate. That would cut the crowd down to about 5,000.

We tried to walk through old campus on the way to the game Saturday and I was absolutely astonished at the unbridaled and widespread damage to the grounds. It was wall to wall students drinking, throwing trash everywhere; vomiting and urinating everywhere. It looked like a smaller version of Woodstock (without nudity). As a graduate of UGA and the law school, I was totally disgusted and embarrassed. When I was in school, we partied (thus giving UGA its dubious distinction) but we had respect for property. Most of these students (UGA and Auburn) have no respect for the University’s property and that is disturbing. The solution is to restrict campus from these activities. Athens is already a virtual police state and adding more police will just make it worse. I cannot believe that UGA officials have allowed this type of activity to go on weekend after weekend. Its truly embarrassing for the University.

The mess that is left behind is disgraceful. As an alum I feel the university should sell a tailgating pass if you want to tailgate on the quad. Make the price reasonable unlike the the prices to park on campus.

Yeah, maybe it is a “lucrative football Saturday”, but doesn’t personal responsibility enter into the equation somewhere? People need to start showing some class and stop behaving like pigs.

There a number of factors that have led to this problem:
1) Overall lack of parking on the campus. This has become progressively worse over time. When tailgaters trash a parking lot it is easier to clean and less disgusting for some reason.
2)Excessive drinking by students.
3)Redneck skank Bulldog fans that have no affiliation with the school except for their Dawgs.
If the school addresses these three issues, the problem will be greatly reduced.

David: thank you for your anecdotal evidence of student behavior and respect for campus. I’m sure that, “back in your day,” you were a perfect, upstanding gentleman who drank white wine with his pinkie raised in the air on game days, sorted your cans and bottles for better recycling at your tailgate, and even helped out pick up garbage at your neighbor’s tailgate. I’m certain neither you nor anyone you knew ever vomited in public (not that you would have known, with your nose so high in the air.)
Back in the real world, here’s a novel idea: start the trash crews around an hour and a half to two hours before kickoff, when many people begin breaking down their tailgates and consolidating. Much of the trash that gets left behind is likely because of the hassle of getting to and from North Campus–between tents, tables, chairs, music, coolers, grills, generators, TVs, etc, where would they like the trash to go? Instead of waiting for the entire quad to clear of tailgaters so everyone can whine about the amount trash, just get it picked up incrementally.
And for the record, we filled our University-provided trashcan by 2:00 pm Saturday and it was never emptied, nor was an alternative provided. The University is talking a big game and isn’t doing anything to back it up.

As a UGA grad twice over (undergrad and grad school unlike some) I beleive we should make the quad a family zone for tailgating. Or charge for a permit in the area to pay for a dumpster for all the trash left behind. It is just sickening the lack of utter respect for the campus, especially here with its rich history. If the “fans” want somewhere to drink and trash I say lets designate a few vacant lots around Rocksprings and the Iron Triangle for them. Its not like they were planning on going to the game anyway!

issue passes/permits for the priviledge to use that or any particular area. assign specific zones and send out bills or pick-up fees if the garbage in that particular zone is not adequately policed. or pay me $2000 and i will personally provide the garbage pickup for the area mentioned. i can sub-contract it out to a couple of industrius non-football fans, pay them $800 for the day each and keep a cool $200 for myself. recycle the cans and have another ten bucks profit.

If the university keeps turning the large parking lots into “controlled” athletic parking lots, the damaged to the campus will continue. Did we have this problem before all of the large lots were taken over…NO. It is great to walk by those empty lots and then see the rest of the campus jammed in. I guess we all coudl park in the controlled lots if we want to pay another grand?

I get on north campus near the library to tailgate at 7am every saturday. I’m one of the first ones out there. By 7:30am there are no trash cans left. The university needs to provide a higher number of trashcans as well as portable toilets. The line for the toilets is easily 30 minutes or longer starting about 4 hours before the game. That being said. I always grab a UGA Garbage can, a Uga Recylce bag and bring my own trash bag. I usually pack up an hour before the game and leave behind virturally no trash.
I believe the trash originates from the walkup tailgate crowd. The people that don’t bring the tents and tv’s and chairs. They just find a pocket of grass and stand around and drink.
That being said I’m moving my tailgate next year because of the propencity of students to get in fights and talk trash to one another and the other team. One guy got his shirt ripped off this past week. Plus they just walk through your tailgate and take food and other supplies without even asking. Its almost like they feel entitled to do so…

It does not matter if you are an alumni or not, there is no excuse for trashing the area where you tailgate. Another Dawg, please stop making excuses for littering. A novel idea would be to take responsibility for your actions. Supply your tailgate with a shelf owned trash can big enough to hold the trash you plan on creating. Then you can take that trash and the trash can home with you. Place the trash in your home trash container, and store the trash can to use at your next event. The university should not be responsible for your trash. Maybe nextime I visit your house, I will pee behind the couch because the crowd will be too big for me to make it to to bathroom.

We have been tailgating on north campus for 3 years(we got run off from aderhold when Adams and his gang wanted $2500 for a parking spot), but this year has been the worse for trash I have ever seen; charging fees and limiting access are not the answer, however; having clean up crews empty trash during the day, and also opening up areas of campus that used to be available would be a start;

You know, a real dog will not mess in its’ own backyard if it can get out.
But these are Dawgs…..well what can I say??
It is easy to blame the mess on drunk students (acceptable?) and redneck fans with no affilliation to UGA except on gameday. I’m sure the redneck donations & ticket revenues are not refused, and that no trash is left by the well bred Georgia alumni, even the ones with post graduate degrees.
Here’s a revolutionary area…..more trash containers and control of the space in question. Campus and/or Athens-Clark County Police (dreaded Police State) take control of the situation BEFORE it gets out of control. Require accessable pathways to allow for garbage removal (including drunk students) and just enforce the laws regarding public behavior. Patrols through the area DURING the pre-game period would go along way toward keeping the situation from getting out of control in the first place. Arrests and removal from the area would soon send the message that certain behavior is simply not acceptable. If the North Campus area is so sacred, perhaps the alumni association should also get involved in the pre-emptive activity.

WayneOh hit the issue. UGA caused this with the controlled high dollar lots which pushed a lot of fans into decks and off campus. Add in stadium expansion and it got worse (less spots for more people).
Create a situation on any campus where people can’t tailgate near their cars and trash will be left behind.
I agree also with the other sentiments that UGA needs to provide a lot more of the cardboard garbage cans.

These mutts are like dogs, the world is their bathroom and they trash their environment. This issue has more to do with that segment of the general population – they litter the roadside with used lottery tickets, empty packs of marlboros, and empty plastic jim beam pint bottles. I almost feel sorry for the actual UGA grads who now are the face of this behavior. But, I look forward to reminding them to pick up their trash when I see them at Bobby Dodd!

The night games have another downside in addition to having all that extra time to drink before the game. Afterward, people aren’t as interested in cleaning up because it’s already after midnight. A lot of folks just want to go to bed. Or pass out.

That will be the left flank. Steve McGarrett, get Kam Fong & the rest of your posse to handle the right flank. Sheriff Lobo, take Deputy Perkins and the rest of your posse & take the middle. If we went back to playing most home games at noon or 1:00, there would be less time for trash to collect. In my time as a student (late 80’s) kickoff for home games was 1:00. We barely had time to shake off the hangover from Friday night let alone pack up stuff to tailgate on Saturday morning. No more cops, no fees for tailgating…just start the game earlier. The tailgates I go to these days have none of these worries.

Last Saturday was my first tailgating experience on the North Campus (I attended Ga Tech & my wife UGA). Beautiful area, but by gametime it looked like Woodstock ‘69. Not enough trashcans, too few portalets, and too many people who didn’t seem to care. To compare, earlier this year I was at Ole Miss in the Grove and there is no comparison. Hundreds of portolets and trash collected throughout the tailgating time, and people who did care about their campus. UGA could learn something from the way Ole Miss handles gameday. To make a bad situation worse, we left our chairs and empty coolers at our tent while at the game and returned to find them gone. I guess I should know better, but I’ve never had that problem in Oxford.

It appears to me that a large contingent of the tailgaers on North Campus have no intention of going to the game. They tailgate all day then head downtown to watch the game. If “fans” have no affilitation with the school other than partying a few days a year, people are not going to have the same respect for the campus as others who have to live there.
I think the fact that many students can’t get tickets for all of the games contributes to this. The students invite their friends from other schools to party and watch the game at a bar since they can’t go anyway.
Garbage and the scarcity of parking are among a host of issues that Evans, Adams, etc. need to contemplate before considering further stadium expansion.

Things that could help: More parking needs to be freed up & more decks built. Expand the shuttles to go to more parking areas\decks. Rent land (or parking lots) further away from campus then bus the people in.

The root of this issue is stupidity! I can’t remember ever tailgating on North Campus when I was in college, but I would imagine that the fraternities and sororities might have a hand in some of the partying there. Michael Adams should restrict access to North Campus, and there should be no organized fraternity/sorority gatherings there. I don’t think dispersing the UGA Police is warranted yet because they(at least when I was at UGA) seem to insight animosity among the students. If things aren’t significantly better this weekend, I say “Let the ticketing begin”! There’s nothing like a ticket and a court date to sober up some of these idiots.

Cookie Monster,
I love it when people answer their own questions. Yes, bag it out with you! Don’t be lazy!

Our family and friends park at the north campus parking deck and tailgate just outside the quad. The problem I see is the enormity of students who don’t care. If you walk through that area on game day, I would say a great majority of the tailgaters are students. It is frustrating to see the lack of respect for university property. It starts and ends with the students. The adults I see tailgating have their area cleaned up prior to the game. It is a shame, but once again, it is the students I see trashing UGA’s campus.

hey dawgs, pull up “onlineathens” pictures and you will see plenty of trash cans, mostly empty.
Have any of your fools ever been to Athens and/or Sandford Stadium?

If not, then STFU!!!! The problem is a combination of things….night games, NOTHING done by the university to alleviate the problem except complaints and threats, nowhere near enough trash receptacles, a very hands-off appraoch by law enforcement as “anything goes” on game day, etc. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH already!!!
I am tired of hearing all your fools from other schools calling UGA redneck trash. There is a poster from ALABAMA of ALL PLACES, calling UGA trash. ALABAMA?!?! HAHAHAHAHAH ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You inbreds wrote the redneck handbook.
If you drive down Broad Street or Sanford Drive for that matter at 7 a.m. on Sunday, guess what? THE TRASH IS ALREADY GONE!!!! There is a whole fleet of folks who are provided a steady paycheck to come pick up the garbage. So on Monday, when the students return to campus, is there a huge problem? Are the kids having to kick trash to the side on their way into the library? NO!!!! So what is the friggin big deal then? I understand it is getting to be a larger problem than usual, so hey Mike Adams, take some of the tens of millions the university gets from these games and use it to help alleviate the problem!! Quit complaing and do something about it!!!

Bobby Dodd Stadium is as crowded as it is only because Tech students are trying to get away from all the noise in the library.

As a UGA grad and native of Athens I am disgusted at the way that the campus is being trashed. Having attended a couple of games at Ole Miss this year I would suggest that the administration take a page out of their book on how to handle tailgaters. The Grove is spotless after the games and they have set times for people to set up and take down their tents. They also bring in full service portable bathrooms.

“Some argue that the trashing of the campus is something that the university should just accept as a cost of lucrative football Saturdays.”
Classless. Georgia. Fans. You people have no pride for your campus. Pathetic.

It appears that the tailgaters are not responsible folks. I would suggest that the area of North Campus be closed and no more tailgating on north campus. The ones who are tailgating are red necks and don’t deserve to be on the campus. Get tough. Stop this mess.

“nowhere near enough trash receptacles”
Bring YOUR OWN trashbags and carry out YOUR OWN trash. UGA is not your mommy and should not have to clean up after you. You people are part of the problem, perpetrators of today’s “pass-the-buck” society. You’re always looking for someone to pick up after you or take care of you. Grow up.

Not too long ago they used to keep the buildings open for people to use the restrooms and they even provided recycling/trash bags that you tied off and left for pick up on North Campus. They have reduced the number of trash cans and put far to few portatoilets out there. That coupled with drunk people equals a mess, I can’t think that we aren’t being set up for failure. As usual the select few will ruin it for everyone else, we either get charged to tailgate or some power hungry cops get free reign to ticket or arrest any one that looks at them the wrong way. The only way we can prevent this is to self govern the area which probably isn’t going to happen.

Look JacketFan, it’s not like we’re effing camping on campus!! Pack it out….what is it, a National Park? NO!!! It’s a college campus, where the college decided it’s okay to succumb to the pressures of the SEC and ESPN to hold night games. Let’s be real OK — there is going to be garbage. Is it not the responsibility of the University to make sure that if you didn’t bring your own garbage bag that you have a place to throw your empty beer cans? I don;t expect to be coddled but there needs to be a certain amount of realism here. Plainly, there isn’t.
Obviously you don’t have that problem on the Flats, huh? Maybe because no one wants to tailgate amongst littered crack baggies and bullet casings that surround your campus, huh?

To all of the “Jacket Fans” Out There,
I went to UGA , my older brother went to Tech, and my younger sister to Ole Miss. I have seen planty of(circle all of the correct answers-rednecks, puking frat boys, raucus behavior, litter) at all three campuses, so don’t pretend that it doesn’t happen everywhere! It’s obviously a problem on North Campus, so the UGA brass should act decisively! There have been pleas and warnings, but now is the time for action. Most people learn the term responsibility in elementary school, and it seems that the people who insist on littering need to get a ticket, and THEY SHOULD HAVE TO PICK UP THE GARBAGE ON NORTH CAMPUS AS PART OF THEIR RESTITUTION! How funny would that be? I think it might solve the problem if the offenders had to pick up their mess.
