Randall Cobb runs against the Dogs last year in Lexington. (Associated Press)
Amid all the talk this week about bowl games and a prime-time telecast against Tech, Saturday’s game against Kentucky still looms large, prompting painful memories of the Dogs’ close escape in Lexington last year as the Georgia defense seemed incapable of stopping then-quarterback Randall Cobb’s runs out of the spread much of the time.
Cobb wound up with three scores and 82 yards rushing, and if it hadn’t been for an exceptional touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to A.J. Green and an interception by Demarcus Dobbs, the Wildcats would have upset the Bulldogs. At times, Cobb made the Georgia defense look the worst we’ve seen in the past couple of seasons, and that’s saying a lot.
This season, Cobb is no longer the starting QB for the Cats, but as a receiver and taking direct snaps out of the wildcat (dubbed “WildCobb”) formation, he has seven rushing touchdowns and four receiving. He’s only 2-for7 in passing but does have a 37-yard completion. Oh, and he ranks third in the SEC in punt returns.
The Athens Banner-Herald has a scary look at how good Cobb is, and while Mark Richt would be expected to dish up the pregame hyperbole on the upcoming opponent, it’s probably not that much of an overstatement when he says that Cobb “might be the most talented player in the Southeastern Conference today. We know what he did last year. He just about single-handedly beat us himself.”
What scares me the most is Georgia’s recent penchant for opening a game on defense playing like they haven’t a clue who they’re facing or what they’re capable of doing. I really hope the Dogs don’t spot Cobb and the Wildcats a couple of touchdown drives before figuring out he’s the most dangerous player on the field.
COX LOVES THE NIGHTLIFE
Georgia QB Joe Cox definitely seems to play better at night, the Bulldogs Blog points out, completing just 55 percent of his passes in day games this season (in which the Dogs are 2-4) while completing 62 percent in night games (in which Georgia is 4-0).
Cox addressed the subject of playing at night in Tuesday’s media briefing: “I like night games. I think it gives you a chance to get good sleep and to really just be able to relax on the way up to the game. It’s tough having early games because you wake up at like 7 or 8, you eat and then it seems like you are on the way to the stadium and you’re ready to go. You don’t really have a chance to think about anything or calm down or be able to relax. You really just don’t have a chance. I think everybody really enjoys night games being able to kind of sit around all day and think about what we have to do and get relaxed about it.”
That makes the upcoming 7:45 and 8 p.m. kickoffs against Kentucky and Tech sound like a break for the Dogs.

A LOT OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING BILL KING EVEN, GET MAD WHEN YOU CONTINUE TO CHEER FOR THE TEMA YOU HAVE GROWN TO LOVE OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFETIME DESPITE THEM NOT PLAYING PERFECT BALL. THEY GET MAD BECAUSE WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR OUR PLAYERS INSTEAD OF SITTING HERE ONLY TALKING ABOUT WHATS WRONG WITH THE STATE OF THE PROGRAM.
THUS, PEOPLE REFER TO LOYAL FANS AS “BLIND HOMERS” BECAUSE WE ARE NOT WILLING TO STOP THE SUPPORT FOR OUR TEAM. THEY FEEL LIKE WE NEED TO TALK NEGATIVE ABOUT OUR TEAM IN HOPES COACH RICHT WILL READ THIS AND MAKE IMMEDIATE CHANGES SO THAT THE BLOGGERS ON THE JUNKYARD BLAWG ARE HAPPY.

Most other teams would have given up after (1) being humiliated by Kiffin & Son Coaching Clinic (2) having a coach who spends more time on his SPRAY TAN than he does supervising his DEFENSIVE and SPECIAL TEAMS COACHES (3) having the team spiritual leader, SOULJAH BOY TELL EM, arrested under what are at best SHADY CIRCUMSTANCES and (4) having to endure the BLATANT ANTI-DAWG BIAS shown by the AJC this year. Gone are the KNOW YOUR DAWGS segments from last year. Now we have to KNOW YOUR BUGS with their HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSE. Now we have to endure columnists who are BALD and HATE THE DAWGS.

These are the classes that Chan Gaily recruited that you say are making TECH look so good???? Over the same time span UGA’s classes were 2005 10th 2006 4th 2007 9th. I guess these are the classes making UGA look so good RIGHT? Johnson was recruiting 1 star player’s while he was at Navy now he is getting 3 and 4 star players at GT. Jeff #2, you may qualify for membership in the Sightless Dead Greek Poets Society. If you adhere to these strict, nah they are easy, rules, you too can become a member in our order. The membership rules are as follows:
1. You would rather have a win for your team than a loss that gets a coach fired, whether he needs it or not.
2. You do not boo your team in your stadium or any stadium. Like it or not, Coaches are part of the team. Booing your team in the stadium=Cheering for your opponent in the stadium. Just ask the other team.
3. You don’t have to be a graduate of your University, you just have to have an undying love of said University.
4. All fans are equal. The skybox owner is no better a fan than the poor soul who has to listen on the radio. Your income means squat.
5. Win or lose, you still support your team.
If you pass all five, you are in.

1. I really wish they would stop letting Joe Cox talk to the media. “I never look past my first receiver on any given play during day games because I have to get up at 7 or 8 in the morning and I can’t sit around all day.” Genius…I wonder how the winning half of the other 2/3rds of the college football world manages to do it every Saturday–do they get to sleep in or something?
2. I have seen nothing all season that makes me think we will beat Kentucky this year. We escaped with a W last year, luckily. I am sure they felt robbed and will come to play on Saturday. If you guys haven’t noticed we still have the same inept defense that got ruined by Cobb last year. This year though, our offense is almost as inept as our defense. I expect our Defense to be its usual confused self and our offense to not be able to overcome it.

Nobody wants them because thier fans don’t travel…they article go on to say that Tech fans have never supported their team on the road or at home stating that when they play thier traditional rivals many of thier seats are taken by the visiting teams fans…..what a joke their program is..CPJ is a good coach and deserves much better…he’ll soon grow tired of the Tech fans and childish ways they support their team.

Kent rushes for over 200 yards a game. But Willie’s D is good against the rush. Kent is 11th in the SEC in rushing defense–they give up over 180 yards rushing a game. Kent has a better turnover margin.
Key to the game:
Ga needs to run the ball 70% of plays and get a 100 yard rusher. That will cut down offensive turnovers too.

Since I have loyalties to two schools, I would love to see UGA in a prestigious bowl like the Peach as that place would rock. I would also like to see my other school Tech to make it the Orange. However, it’s going to be a rocky road for both schools to make it there. First the dawgs will need to win out (incld beating Tech) to get there. Tech at least needs to beat Clemson again for them to get there. I’m afraid both schools are going down a treacherous road with land mines to make that happen.
Adman Is Clueless

Adman – where are those articles you claim to be reading about bowl committees worrying about Tech fans not traveling? If you Google the subject you can read several opinions from sport sites that say NO ONE wants to PLAY Tech because of Tech’s unique offense. However, there is nothing being said about Tech fans not traveling well. So, I suppose you think you can just make this stuff up on an anonymous blog under the pretense that no one will research it. You pretend that it’s a professional opinion when, in fact, it is only your insecurity and personal jealousy that is being expressed. If you are truly an adman then you are incredibly misinformed; you must have gotten your education in Athens.

I am absolutely amazed, stunned really, at how few posts there are about the UK game just 3 days away from the posts here. I think Mr. King had a VERY insightful blog that most people are ignoring. I think the Cats have an excellent chance to win this game although it is on the road. If we can get up early I like our chances; it should certainly quiet the huge crowd that the Dogs always have. It seems that most Dog fans are commenting on the game next week and not this week. That’s good news for the Wildcats! Let’s hope your team is doing the same thing. We’re not favored but I like our chances. GO CATS!!!

Tech is a joke and will forever be the red-headed, warcraft playing, can’t get a date that doesn’t cost extra for sleeping over, step-child in Georgia. It’s a shame they even bear the name of the great state of Georgia in thier technical college title.

It’s weird, isn’t it. The last few years, we’ve had a lot of trouble with night games, but this year we haven’t lost one yet. (Knock on wood)

Humor, or what I try to use as humor, is wasted on some people on this blog. Yes I know about time zones. Laugh with me or at me, your choice.

@cat power
You are right. I blame it on Mark Bradley and his cohorts. They started this junk on Monday talking about GT and bowl games. I think the team has their head on straight and is giving Kentucky there due. See you at the Cat and Dawg fight!

Adman – you replied with more useless opinion and, of course, NO FACTS. Thanks for admitting that you made up the crap that you posted. You’re just bitter than someone called you out on your biased, misinformed opinion pretending to be factual. You’re only retort is that I actually took the time to fact check a blogger. How lame! You got busted little doggie.

I am also surprised that there has not been much insight into the game this weekend. I think this will be an awesome game between 2 closely matched teams. I think the Dawgs will pull it out though.
BTW, good victory last week. You guys have not given up on the season and that is a good sign.

tuck fech is really, really upset about Tech! Can you feel his pain? hahahahahaha. We are absolutely loving your misery. I love the arguments about our stadium and everything that doesn’t really matter. Your team got beat this year and you are already making excuses this year about why you’re going down… AGAIN! Tech is the better team this year… I know it hurts and please know also that we are enjoying reading your angst… it puts a smile on our face to watch you squirm.

Cat Power, you must be new to this blog. A lot of times, its like an elementary school in the summer – No Class.
Here’s how it works: Bill King posts something to the Junkyard Blog. Some race to be first… Why? Heck if I know. Maybe Bill has a secret contest. Then Saint Simons get on here to remind everyone that his team beat the dogs once in eight years. Then, a few folks post an opinion on the blog topic. However, by then, the Tech fans, not having a blog of their own, come in here to bad mouth the Dogs. Then the forum starts to go downhill from there and the original topic is totally forgoten. To save you some time, I will cover all of these idiotic posts for you in one shot:
“Dogs Suck”
“CMR Sucks”
“Willie Martinez Sucks”
“Dog fans suck”
“GT will never lose to the Dogs again”
“Joe Cox sucks”
“The defense sucks”
“{this poster} sucks”
“{that poster} sucks”
“L-Dawg is a homer”
I’m sure I have forgoted some, but you get the picture.
I hope that helps. As for my opinion, I think it will be a close game. It will depend on which team of ours shows up – the team that played Tennessee or the team that showed up in the 2nd half against Auburn. Thanks for your relevant post!

Tech downsized the stadium to remove the granite horseshoe seats at the south end. Those seats were obviously hard, but also cold. They were worse than the splintery pine planks in the “high school admission” section at Sanford Stadium. I sat in both several times, as a Tech and Georgia fan. At Grant Field, that was the first of several sequential renovations.

Gatorzone, great posts. Seeing as how you like to actually discuss college football on this blog, I have a question for you. It seems to me that the Gators are not as dominate as they were before Teebow was out with his concussion. I will be the first one to admit that I have not watched an entire Florida game this season (including the one in Jacksonville -LOL), but that is just the feeling I get. Do you see that as well? I think the SEC championship is going to be a heck of a game.
I look forward to your comments…

Say What, lots of people think Tebow is tentative. Truth be told, he has played poorly ALL season, even before the concussion. Too many fumbles, interceptions and sacks. Everyone is quick to blame the Oline, but I think he should shoulder some of the blame. He is holding the ball too long and missing open receivers. I have a feeling he is looking to go deep too often instead of taking what the defense gives. His windup is also longer than it was in years past. He looks like Byron Leftwich sometimes and is having the ball stripped. UF is definitely not an offensive juggernaut this year, but they do not have to be. Defense is lights out and the run game is superb. (that gets missed alot due to the fact they use 4 RB’s including Tebow) I think the Bama game will be close and will come down to the end of the game. Gators could easily lose this game close, or win, but either way it will be a close one. I am more nervous about this years game than last, that is for sure.

Rennie Curran says he may leave UGA for the NFL draft because he needs to provide for a 14-month-old daughter who doesn’t live with him. There’s no mention of a wife, so we can assume that Curran is just a typical absent babydaddy with no intention of marrying the mother.
Why don’t irresponsible goons like Curran think about providing for a baby before they donate their sperm to their latest one-night stand? Just another example of the mentality of Mark Richt’s recruits, and another reason why the Dawgs will never be winners with players of such low character.

Randall Cobb ranks up there with Dexter McCluster. Outside of Mark Ingram, the two afore mentioned have busted loose from the pack as the season draws close to it’s end. UK likes for Cobb to handle the ball on all phases of possession. Defensively, two guys spying on him wouldn’t be a bad idea from time to time…BTW, if CWM is successful, can CMK borrow the tape..?
