Washaun Ealey and the running game definitely have improved. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Georgia comes out of the Auburn game — a very big win for the Dogs — with the kind of mixture of positives and negatives that leaves fans somewhat optimistic but still with a lot of concerns.
Yes, the running game does seem to be developing nicely (if belatedly) this season. The one-two punch of Washaun Ealey and Caleb King was quite effective against the Tigers, and since Georgia finally settled on who’s playing where on the offensive line, the blocking has improved, though it remains a work in progress.
But let’s not lose sight of the fact that the Dogs had every reason to think they could run on Auburn, which ranks near the bottom of the SEC in rushing defense.
The fact that Georgia was able to move the ball and score without the services of the injured A.J. Green is impressive, but again let’s keep in mind that Auburn isn’t ranked very high in pass defense, either. The loss of Green really hurts, especially if he can’t return in time for the Tech game.
But the loss of Bacarri Rambo may be every bit as troubling, mainly because it means more reps for coverage-challenged Bryan Evans. Yes, the pass defense stepped it up at the end and kept the Tigers out of the end zone. Rambo was a big part of that before getting hurt, as was the pressure on the quarterback. But there were still several instances in the game where coverage was completely blown in the secondary. We’ll miss Rambo against Kentucky. Cross your fingers that he’s back for the trip to Bobby Dodd Stadium.
On the plus side, Georgia finally kept the penalties pretty much in check and flipped the turnover margin on somebody. If they could make that into a trend, it would perhaps be the single biggest factor in improving the Dogs’ admittedly slim chances of winning out.
On the negative side, the Dogs’ poor kickoff coverage isn’t getting any better. Auburn’s 99-yard return for a touchdown was on one of Jon Fabris’ beloved directional kicks in the corner, and the Tigers got good field position on other relatively short directional kicks. When Walsh kicked one into the end zone, it was only returned to the 24. How much worse could the Dogs’ chances of covering be if Fabris and Mark Richt were to allow Blair Walsh to go for the touchback every time? The Dogs’ punt coverage wasn’t much better, with no one close enough to the ball carrier to recover that Auburn fumble.
Another big plus was that Joe Cox didn’t have an interception, but that was more luck than judgment, thanks to a poorly thrown pass bouncing off the hands of an Auburn defender, allowing Orson Charles to make the catch.
Bottom line: The Dogs are still wildly inconsistent. It’s great to be able to come back from a 14-point deficit, but we’re still looking for that complete game where Georgia doesn’t stink the place up for a quarter. Let’s hope we get to see that.

Aside from the early 14-0 deficit, it’s the most complete game we’ve played all year. A lot can be taken away from that. I also like how we didn’t panic and came back to win. I honestly didn’t think this team had that kind of resolve left in them.

Obviously, Georgia will miss AJ, but they showed a lot of speed on the outside with Tavarres King and Israel Troupe (Wow,what a great surprise he was on Saturday!)…not to mention Wooten and the possible emergence of Marlon Brown. We know what we’ve got in Michael Moore. AJ is certainly a playmaker, but if we can run the ball as we have been, we’ve got plenty of WR’s capable of making big plays.

Numbers are in for UGA versus UK in the SEC DC Fantasy League. Coach Willie has a cumulative score of 19.24 versus 20.4 for Coach Wildcat which translates to a win by the Dawgs. That is the good news. The bad news. Coach Willie and Coach Wildcat split the categories, three versus three. Willie has lower averages in his winning categories. It may be closer than we would like.

The win was good but changes nothing. Willie must be fired. Not to mention when I was watching Mark Richt walk into the lockeroom at halftime to a chorus of boos, down by 7, I felt like I was watching the end of an era.
Having said that, if Richt is dumb enough to keep Willie after everything that has happened the last couple of years, then Richt should be fired before next year. If he is allowed to keep Willie, our D will be just as bad next year. Improvements need to be made, and it starts with firing Martinez.
A win over a mediocre Auburn team means absolutely nothing!!!

Paul H, I have never had doubt about this team having leadership fighting for the win.
Yes they may have given up in the 4th to UF but the play calling and scheme was not there to win that one. The team gave up far after the game was out of hand.
The coaches lost games this year not the player.
Rick S, I agree, long kick returns, draws and screens on 3rd and long, and an arm tackling defense are all common.

Anytime Bobo gets his play-calling mix right and calls 70% run plays/30% pass plays, instead of his defunct pass-happy philosophy, Ga’s going to win. That cuts down turnovers which helps field position, and controls the clock. Willie’s D is UNDEFEATED when the offense commits no turnovers, and Willie’s D held the #1 offensive genius in the NCAA (#1 in 2008, #10 in 2009) to 17 points. And we kicked a 51 yard field goal. Pretty solid in all 3 phases. It was a terrific game plan–we out-coached the other team for a change.

Did anyone else hear one of the broadcasters say in the middle of the game, “you know, that Willie Martinez is just an excellent defensive coordinator.” I had to chuckle to myself a little there.
It seems like no matter who we beat it’s always just, “well, they must have just not been very good.” Auburn might not have been great, but they led the SEC in a lot of offensive categories and we did a damn good job of shutting them down after the first quarter. Give credit where it’s due. I think it was definitely the most complete effort that I’ve seen in a while. I heard Sanford Stadium was very loud, too. Wish I could have been there.
And congrats to Washaun Ealey for winning SEC “Freshman of the Week” honors.

DawgGirl32 that broadcast “team” is so poor week after week that it just baffles me as to why ESPN signs their checks. The coverage had some nice shots of Athens, but the guys in the booth were sloppy, did not do their homework (AJ Greem, according to these bozo’s missed the T Tech game with a broken rib), and call a different game than the one I was watching. Bob Davies is a poorer analyst than he was a Coach. The other knucklehead should do high scholl play-by-play until he developes some skill. This has nothing to do with how they represented UGA, it is related to their collective lack of skill as broadcasters. With the proliferation of games I guess we can’t expect to “world wide leader” to hire top talent, but these guys are worse than watching a bowl game on FOX! Bill, can you get a read on CWM? There has been a discussion brewing for the past two weeks as to how much of our troubles can be attributed to coaching, and how much can be attributed to the quality of athletes that we currently have playing. My mind keeps going back to the Hawaii Sugar Bowl. Did CWM become a genius for one game, or did we have superior athletes, or both? Do we not have the talent to play man-to-man pass coverage (Prince Miller and Bryan Evans – that would be a “NO”), or is CWM so locked in to the Cover 2 that he is willing to risk his job over it?

I will respect the Tech fan that admits the UGA game on Nov. 28 has them scared shi*less. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves. Yes, GT will be favored. Yes GT has had the better season. YES! you DID win against us…LAST YEAR. But if you for one second don’t think UGA can come down to North Ave and ruin your whole season, you’re just plain dumb. UGA will have nothing but pride and revenge to play for, a dangerous combination. And what’s more, we have NOTHING to lose in this game, for once anyway. GT has much, much more at stake. We will see what happens, but the Techies need to be realistic. That overconfidence will be your downfall.

The message has been clearly delivered about Martinez. Certainly CMR knows what is being said all over the Dawg Nation. It is time to stop booing even the play calling and get behind your team and work out the coaching problems after the season. Hold your peace until then. Tech fans (like many who come into success suddenly) don’t quite know how to handle it yet. It is understandable, but some of them are more than optimistic – they border on arrogant. The confidence of GA fans about beating Tech – not sure where that comes from, but I would say GA could make it tough for Tech if GA gets it all together.

Monty Kiffen (one of the best defensive gurus in the NFL) employed a press man to man blitz package Saturday against Ole Miss. What happened? Ole Miss RB ran for 285 yards. USC did the same thing to Stanford, What happened?
Could it be that the two teams personal were young and out of position or were Kiffen and Pete Carrol horrible coaches, employed the wrong scheme and should be fired?
Also, for all you fire CWM fans, who do we get? President Adams is NOT going to allow us to spend the 1 million plus dollars to attract a top notch MFL or BCS conference caliber coach. He WILL NOT let a coordinator make more money than he makes. What proven DC will want to come to the SEC and make half of what his peers makes at Bama, Fl, LSU and Tenn?
This makes the question then do you want to work harder to improve on the schemes and players we have or go to the unknown? I do not know the answer to the questions but I trust CMR’s decision making ability.
Also, we use to get some mean, nasty hard hitting marginal players from Hargrave or GMA. Have you noticed these types of players are no longer available to us. Adams has set up his admitting committee to enroll players and will not allow any marginal players to be admitted. This has happened since BVG left the program. I wonder if that may have been one of the reasons he left?
This is a complicated issue and I do not think everyone is aware of all the facts. I do not believe Adams cares if we have NC’s or not. I think he would rather us be an Ivy league sports program.

All considered we are lucky to be 6&4; on the other hand, the GATORS have all that experience and still struggle BUT they win. are we the SOUTHERN CAL of the SEC ?

td – i would not be concerned with non-qualifiers that do a PG year at Hargrave. Hargrave is good but not even the best in that arena. Fork Union Military Academy produces more talent and always has.
I would simply focus getting the top senior in the FUMA class every year versus waiting for them to qualify during PG. Marcus Dowtin is the first FUMA player we have recruited in a long time and he has done a good job for us this season…in my humble opinion.

Bounces mean everything. UGA won that game despite the ball’s bouncing for AU time and again. The onlly lucky bounce Ga got was the one to Charles. Otherwise, punts spin just right, backs fumble forward to themselves, a punt returner has the ball fly straight out of bounds. It’s been that kind of year.
Georgia fans need to realize that they are the only fanbase in all the USA that cannot be optimistic, can’t refer to history, can’t earn anything, or can’t ever deserve a break. Theirs is the team that other fans say is irrelevant, has no tradition, and doesn’t matter for the five hundredth time today. Theirs is the blog that is overrun by rivals screeching hatred all the time. It’s comical to read

It’s all about coaching. All through UGA’s history we have competed with anyone in the country when we had quality coaching, Butts, Dooley, Richt. Unfortunately, UF managed to snag two of the best coaches ever, Spurrier, now Myer. Richt is gonna have to upgrade his staff if he wants to compete with Myer, Saban, and the other good SEC coaches, as well as PJ at Tech. It seems this obvious to most everyone. Hopefully, if Richt won’t do what needs to be done, Evans will do it for him. Evans sure seems to be leaning that way in remarks (and email to M Bradley) lately.

td, if you are trying to compare Monte Kiffin to Willie Martinez, just don’t. Yeah, UT gave up 40 plus points Saturday, but Willie has done it 6 times the past 2 seasons (so far) and 30 plus points 9 times. He is by a long shot the worst DC in the SEC!!

THE GOOD-NO TURNOVERS. THE BAD-LOSING AJ AND RAMBO FOR THIS WEEKS GAME. if, and i mean if!! we dont turn the ball over we will have a good chance to beat ky and tech with or without aj and rambo. but turnovers are a part of the game and that was the biggest reason we lost last year(tech game).

Glad to hear about UK’s run defense. UGA needs to run the ball as much as possible, just for the run blocking mind set. The Dawgs relied on the passing game to set up the run last season because the line was too young and too small to blow anyone off the ball. Now that Bobo has found a couple of RBs and a line that seems to work well together they need to use the UK game to get their timing down {no more false starts} and set the aggressive tone for run blocking. If this line can stay together and gain more confidence in themselves and their comrades blocking will improve and the penalties will decrease.

It’s a crying shame that the officials stole the game from Auburn. I guess Richt whined enough that they let him win one.
What a joke the UGA team is.

Martinnez has had ( and Fabris) too many LOUSY years to show what they cannot do ……….which is to coach. If Richt lets them remain in their current capacities ……….then we will see them ALL gone in 2010. It cannot continue and the $$$$ boys will not allow CWW to remain as Head D coach.
The UGA $$$ budget is very, tight. Remeber the one day off with no pay furloughs prior to the Florida game?? The UGA athletic budget is already strained. Facts are facts. I am in the know folks.
With that reality, UGA will see Gardner being “promoted” to Head D coach with some modest pay increase from his already $350,000 base and CWM being “moved” into an office job with a huge pay cut from his current $500,000 base pay. Bobo? He will also be “redeployed” as they corporately say to an obscure position coach job, with Richt handling the O plays in concert with Searels, who might get a rather healthy boost to his pay. Searels WILL BE IN DEMAND after this season and Bob’s and CWM’s and Fabris’ phones will never, ever ring for another job interview. We are stuck with these three clowns. They are in Richt’s church group ……foget them ever leaving.
