Losing A.J. Green is a big blow to Georgia's offense. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Some more thoughts and questions the day after the Dogs beat Auburn for the fourth year in a row …
Wow, this was a really costly victory in terms of injuries. Losing A.J. Green is a big blow. Israel Troupe and Tavares King made big catches Saturday night (King redeeming himself after dropping a sure touchdown in the end zone earlier), but they quite simply are not on Green’s level. He’s a game-changer and a constant threat that opposing defenses plan their schemes around.
Without him, Georgia is going to have to hope the improvement in the rushing attack continues and that Saturday’s turnaround in penalties and turnovers is not a one-game aberration. Because without A.J., the Dogs have much less margin for error.
And let’s hope Bacarri Rambo isn’t out long, either. Bryan Evans might have had a hand in the breakup of that last-gasp pass by the Tigers, but for much of the game he looked flat-footed and out of position. Business as usual, in other words. On some of Auburn’s passes, the receiver couldn’t have been more wide open. Rambo is a playmaker and is sorely needed. …
What is it with the Dogs’ game-planning? Auburn didn’t do anything unexpected in the first quarter, but the Dogs’ defense looked clueless. Then, in the remaining three quarters, Willie Martinez’s unit got pressure on the quarterback and kept the Tigers from scoring another offensive touchdown. Why did it take so long?
And on offense, we knew going in that Auburn could be run on, so why was Mike Bobo thinking horizontally early on, trying screen passes and Branden Smith around the end? What was clearly called for was running the ball down the Tigers’ throats to set up the vertical passing game downfield. Once the Dogs did that, they were able to move the ball. But why didn’t Georgia do that from the start? It’s pretty clear that Georgia is most successful offensively when Bobo puts emphasis on the running game. Why he seems to forget that at times is a mystery. …
Saturday night may have seen the first kickoff return for a touchdown that Georgia has given up since 1999, but yielding long returns is certainly nothing new for the Dogs, especially this season. Directional kicks or not, it’s the coverage that’s the problem and you’ve got to wonder about some of the personnel decisions Georgia makes on kick coverage. Why on earth is Logan Gray, our backup QB, in there covering a kick? Certainly, not because he’s good at it. On that touchdown, he was the safety valve and failed miserably. Mark Richt and his staff definitely need to rethink their approach to kick coverage. …
For the second game in a row, Joe Cox didn’t throw an interception, but he got away with one on the pass that bounced off a defender’s hands and into the arms of Orson Charles for a long gainer. I guess you could say the Dogs were overdue for such a break. On the other side, the Dogs snagged two interceptions and should have had two more. Evans dropped one and on another a couple of Georgia defenders ran into each other trying to make what should have been a sure pick. That’s an aspect of the Dogs’ game that definitely looks to improve as the younger players like Rambo and Branden Smith get more playing time in the secondary. …
Let’s talk some more about this booing business. I came down on the boo-birds in my post-game comments Saturday night because I think that, contrary to what some of these folks think, having your own fans boo you doesn’t “motivate” you to play better. And make no mistake about it, you might think you’re booing Mike Bobo or Willie Martinez or Mark Richt, but that’s not how the players hear it. And that’s not how visiting prospects perceive it. I know, you pay your money and you think that gives you the right to boo. And that’s expected in the pro game. But with college players, it’s different. When the Dogs play poorly and you boo them, you’re not part of the solution.
On the other hand, the supportive noise made by the Sanford crowd in the fourth quarter definitely was a factor in the game and coach Richt credited the fans with causing Auburn’s false-start penalty on their last drive. At some schools, the fans cheer like that all the time. I wish that were the case in Athens.
Lastly, one of my favorite moments Saturday night came in the fourth quarter on the drive after Reshad Jones’ interception. A guy down in the row in front of me saw King in at tailback and hollered “Why is No. 4 in there? Get Washaun in!” King proceeded to score on that play and everyone turned to look at the fan who had wanted him out. He just grinned sheepishly. He was, naturally, delighted to be wrong.

Don’t forget the COSTLIEST thing about this win for the Dawgs:
This win, as mediocre and undisciplined and downright horrible as this season has been, has likely sealed Mark Richt’s fanatic loyalty to Willie Martinez.
We’re never getting rid of the worst defensive coordinator in Georgia’s history.
This nightmare will NEVER end.
Now we, who made fun of the Bugs for so long, know EXACTLY how they felt all those years with Chan Gailey.
Karma is a mother frakker, huh?
Mark Richt and Willie Martinez have stunk up the joint for two straight years, yet idiot, blindly loyal fans are going to point to THIS win (as will Evans) as “proof” for why Martinez shouldn’t be fired.
Who cares about all of the 30 and 40 point games his given up, most EVER by a Georgia DC.
Who cares about how undisciplined and unprepared his defenses usually are.
Yep. This win is going to cost us A LOT.
This is God’s punishment for all of those year’s we made fun of the Bugs for Chan Gailey.

Booing is a form of communication. Maybe your wife believes you shouldn’t or can’t communicate. But the rest of the succesful world thinks differently. You do well, we cheer, you play like hell, we boo. It works. And to me, considering the way they played after the booing, one could surmize it worked.

One game does not a season make. Georgia was playing Auburn not Tech or Florida or LSU.
Willie’s D looked lost the first two series. The middle of the field was open all night. Third down and long is a nightmare for the Georgia D. I’m glad we won but make no mistake about it … Willie must go and Bobo needs to be demoted. Changes must come or CMR will need to go.

This win does not validate martinez OR BoBo. Willie has to go-period. Also, BoBo is just too conservative. When he decided to start moving toward the goal line in big chinks, rather than horizontal to ot, we played like we have been capable of all season. The defense looked great most of the night, but the truth is, the kids did it, not Martinez. he is not the kind of winner we need. Mark needs to put his loyalty aside for awhile, and consider what is best for the future of the program. Willie and Mike are not wjat Georgia needs to return to the level of play we are used to.

I agree with you on the booing. The fundamental fact of communication is that what is heard is important, not what was said. If the players and worse the prospects hear it as booing and lack of support for them it cannot work. In business we are taught to praise in public and criticize in private. That leaves not room for boos in a stadium.

You guys didn’t witness their humongous man Hug on the sideline?
Reports out of Butts-Mehre have been saying that Richt is “fanatically devoted” to Martinez.
Listen to the radio show Monday night. You’ll see.
And Damon Evans is so weak and ineffectual, that he won’t do a damn thing about it when Mark Richt decides he’s not firing Martinez.
Just wait. It’s gonna happen. Unless the big money boosters step in, we’re going down in flames with ANOTHER year of Willie Martinez.

Georgia fans wanting to play the nice guy role and not booing when things need to be changed is exactly why UGA football program has no national championship since 1980. The players know who we boo when you run a draw play on 3 and 10. Its all about the coaches , we love our players to death. Its call tough love guys! I think us Georgia fans have been more than nice and patient with this coaching staff. If we do not show our emotions some time, things will never get done. They will think us Georgia fans will just accept the mediocrity that is right now. This is the SEC not the pac-10 so take that we should not boo when stupidity is occuring somewhere else. And every big Georgia game I go to its loud the entire game so I dont get that either. Go Dawgs!!!

The consensus coming out of the game and on these blogs is “oh know, I hope this win didn’t save Willie’s job.” I hope it didn’t either but sometimes we must take a day or two to enjoy a win. Booing your own COLLEGE team is for cowards. I don’t care how much you paid to get in. I have to wonder about “fans” who have prided themselves in running Joe Cox into the ground. He deserves to give the whole crowd the finger next Saturday night around 11PM.

Anybody with any sober sense knows that CMR will evaluate the staff and team after the season and the the ship will be righted. Should Dooley have fired Erk after the ‘74 season? Look where we’d be had that happened! CMR and ADDE will make the right call after the season one way or the other. Remember, they don’t listen to us bloggers!

Everyone makes a big deal out of CMR’s loyalty to Martinez..saying he won’t fire him…that friendship and loyalty goes both ways…Willie will resign after the Tech game..he will do it to save his friend Mark…(He has probably already done it pivately to take effect after the season)…Even if we win out…there have been been too many games of too much yardage and too many points and not enough turnovers created…the body of work over the long haul justifies a change…Willie will walk away on his own…
It is amazing how many teams drive down the field on us in the opening quarter at 5-10 yards per play…That is determined by game planning Monday through Friday…The opposing cordinators eat Willie’s lunch getting ready for the game and it shows up in the first quarter…Thankfully, we were playing another mediocre team yesterday or we could not have gotten back in it..

Bug Killer couldn’t disagree more, Willie’s going to keep a job, but not as D- Coordinator. Secondary coach yes, but word out of UGA camp is the new coordinator is being looked at already by D. Evans. Dawg fans don’t go tripping to hard, this is the same coaching staff that finished with the # 2 team in the country in ‘07, and was 10-3 last year. Mark Richt and Co. will fix this monstrosity of a mess before next year. People rise up and love your Dawgs, we are Bulldawg nation, and yes like SC we having a bad year, but it isn’t over, and when we whip Tech this year while they feel all high and mighty, it will make Thanks giving dinner really digest well. I agree with Bill, not a good testimony to a recruit. These are young men trying to do their best, would you boo your on child at any level of ball. I am not happy with some of the coaching this year myself but I believe CMR will do what needs to be done, if he doesn’t Damon Evans will.

Bill,
For the record, I was NOT one of the people booing the coordinators last night, but I understood how they felt. A poster on your earlier blog rightly pointed out that it is inconsistent (to say the least) for you to criticize booing that a player MIGHT INTERPRET as being directed at him when you publish snide statements like this that ARE directed at a player.
MCDAVIDDAWG

As for the booing, I think most of that is directed at Richt and other coaches. The insulated coaching staff if hard to send a message to. This game didn’t give much of a indication of better coaching. We did what we’ve done all season and finally found a team, other than Tenn Tech, that we could run up the middle. The fans have few ways of voting and attendance is one way and that vote showed up strongly at Florida and many of Saturdays game were second hand ticket holders. I thought the crowd was very quiet for what was actually a good game to watch. This game just gave a bad coaching staff a little more time. In the long run that’s not going to help. It will take another season to get rid of Richt but the man’s not coaching and isn’t likely to change. The coaching once again was not prepared though for a change they did make some adjustments, almost unheard of.
Does anyone truly think we can beat Tech?

I’m pretty sure Ealey and King are smart enough to know that when we boo a 5 yard draw play on 3rd and 13, we’re not booing them.
And besides the Rambo hit, the defense played pretty poorly on that last Auburn drive, they were moving the ball well, and shot themselves in the foot with motion penalties. It wasn’t our defense that made the stop there.
I noticed the same thing Lou did, the defense gave up a TON of 3rd and long conversions, no excuse for that.

Here’s something for all the recruits that were at the game to think about. I was watching the Tennessee game on TV. Tennesse had a player that was seriously hurt and was down for sometime. I never saw Lane Kiffin come out to the field to check on or support his injured player. When I was watching the Georgia game, I saw a Georgia player go down hurt. (Just like the Tennessee injury.) I saw Mark Richt right there with him. I know which coach I would rather play for!

I agree with Larry.. I’m happy for the win, I think it showed some flashes in the pan of some good things.. BUT..
We got Auburn in so many 3rd and long situations, had them backed up, and then we get some serious busted coverage, and allow them to get a 1st down.. I can’t count how many times they should have been punting, and didn’t! Long gains in the secondary were killer.
I suspect we handle UK well, and then go into the highschool stadium and play a close game. If we play the same soft D like we did with Auburn, we’re gonna be spread thin with Tech.

The D of the G stinks like the S! I have never seen defense that poor from a UGA team. We need to find a D genius if we are going to ever consistently play on the level with the gators or Alabama.
I am a CMR fan, but coach NS grabbed a couple of JC players and took Alabama closer to the top from his start as coach than we have ever been under Richt, so if I were CMR, I would seek a couple of geniuses so that we can re-join the elite teams of the SEC. We have not looked like a team with top talent, and since we do have it, we have to look to the coaches! All three phases have been weaker than normal!

In college football, 95% of actual coaching is done by position coaches (O and D line and back coaches) . Coordinators are responsible for the scheme and play calling. UGA’s problems this year have been due to poor individual performances and seem due in large part to a lack of discipline – ignoring keys, getting out of position, penalties (if players can’t remember the snap count from the huddle to the line use the same count on every play for God’s sake). I don’t think anyone doubts the ability of the players to execute.
If there’s blame to bear by Richt, Martinez, and Bobo, it’s the selection and/or control of the position coaches.

Booing a college team is usually bad form, but I suspect it wasn’t done out of meanness so much as it was a spontaneous reaction to being down 14-0 and looking anemic in every phase of the game.
This team and coaching staff have been stinking up the joint now for awhile. Since the start of ‘07, Georgia has played tough, sound, disciplined football for about a half-season, and really bad football for 2 plus seasons. It’s a wonder Georgia fans have been as restrained as we have been. ‘02-’05 bought a lot of goodwill, but that only goes so far in a hyper-competitive environment like college football (then again, try being an outside sales rep in the real world. talk about a “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately” environmen).
I hope last night’s win is the start of tough, disciplined, aggressive, and championship-calibre football at UGA. It won’t happen unless some hard decisions and changes are made in the offseason. We’ll see.

Shockley threw some sweet deep balls that got dropped. Sean Bailey caught a couple deep ones from Shock but dropped more. When Cox has good protection and time, he does throw a good deep ball. All the people saying Cox has a weak arm are silly. He can’t go deep with a flick of the wrist like a couple freaks, but when he uses his full throwing motion, he can bomb over the defense. If he’d been a three-year starter, Cox probably could have minimized the interceptions too.

This team has grit…that’s something that can’t be coached…we have not seen the best of Ealey and King either …those kids have fresh legs and are starting to find a groove as a tandem. We will miss Green for sure but Kent and GT are not exactly defensive juggernauts.I’d like to see us expand the wild dawg formation by running some power plays with Samuel.T.King is showing flashes of his big play ability,I’m sure he will have some opportunities deep in these last two games. If we run the ball we will score points so I guess the season hinges on Willie and his boy’s performance over the last two games. The fire Willie crowd is going to get a chance to gloat or eat crow

What do you think it will take for Willie to save/lose his job? What if the Dawgs win all remaining games but give up 30 points in each?

I think that coming back from a 14-point deficit and winning the game counts as “taking it like a man.”

Bill,
I share a class with about 25 football players. FWIW, we had a discussion in class about whether or not college athletes should be paid and whether or not booing shows disrespect to the guys on the field; the football players were of the OVERWHELMING opinion that booing is sometimes necessary. They described it as a wake-up call that motivates them to play better for their coaches, team, and fans. And believe me, they know the boos weren’t directed at them. They are not unaware of the criticism of Martinez and Bobo that is in every paper and every football conversation in and around campus.

Yeah, UGA eked out a very good win in spite of the coaches. I was at the game and also hated the booing from the fans. I am not going to try to justify the booing because I don’t agree with it but I think it was largely directed at the play calling and lack of defensive coverage on 3rd down conversions. Nice win but if we bring this game plan to Atlanta 13 days from now I think everyone knows what the outcome will be. I just hope that Green & Rambo are back in the mix by then; otherwise UGA will be handed a demoralizing defeat because we all know that Johnson can coach circles around Richt. That said, it was refreshing to actually see the UGA defense play agressively for a change.

JDD it will depend on how the points were scored. If the defense plays the way they did after the 1st qt Willie will not be going anywhere. If the team goes 9-4 there is no way anybody is getting fired or resign. If we collapse again against GT or Kent it’s 50/50 and if w are blown out by both 75/25 but I think we are going to win 3 more games and everyone will be back.

Yeah well it was after the game when he spoke about laughing about being booed, however i am of the belief that fans are booing the coaching, we run Backs in and out like a chinese fire drill, a running back has to run and run to get a feel for the game, Thanks for your input Johnnydanger…

Frank Lane, news flash on the subejct matter, this is college football, there is no private discourse between fans and coaching staff. Booing is appropriate when deserved. But maybe you’re right, maybe I’m not in the arena. And the coaches actually don’t berate players in practice in front of their teammates, they only praise there, same for the military, we all hold hands in battle and then whisper encouragement in private. Yeah, you’re probably right, F*ing idiot.

sitting here reading some of the comments made some of our so-called fans, it is in very bad taste to hear boos coming from fans in the stands. If I heard boos coming on my son’s visit here in 04 , I definitely would have told him to go ANYWHERE BUT HERE. These kids put in a lot of hours working hard just as everyday working people for some butthead to boo you for some play that the oc or the dc wants to run. I tell you 1 thing , if you want to boo the players, bring your butt to the parents section 333 and do it. Several parents looked around at each other and shook their heads. Just because you spent x amountb of $ to get on the ticket list doesn’t give the right to boo my kid or anybody else’s. If you are lucky enough to have a child top get this far to get a scholarship to any school, let me know where he or she is at and I’ll gladly buy a ticket and come sit next to you and boo the heck out of them and see how YOU feel!

At the start of the game it appeared our defense couldn’t stop Clarke Central. But then we adjusted, something clicked and we played pretty good defense for 45 minutes. That is exactly what has happened to us by some very good opponent’s DC. Against UT we started strong, Monte Kiffin made some adjustments and they shut us down. I am ready to try a new DC at UGA but it was good to see some “coaching” which is recognizing what is wrong and correcting it.
As far as the booing, that is never acceptable in college sports. We had some top recruits at the game and trust me they want to play for fans that support the team regardless of the outcome.

If Mark Richt thinks that putting together a decent half against a mediocre Auburn team outweighs all of the 40+ point games and the drubbings at the hand of other teams, some of them mediocre, then Richt is even more disgraceful than I thought. There is no doubt he will put his personal relationship with Willie above the team, and for that he too should lose his job. What a disgrace.

Booing is no class. It hurts the team and is a reflection of a bad mannered lout. Fans don’t boo spectators do. I remember the Goff years and the Donnan years and I don’t remember booing then. It seems like once our program improved all these spectators came out of the woodwork to support the team and now they are tearing down the team at the game when the team needs us in the game supporting them. You can tell that when we are in the game it helps them. I support Coach Richt and know he will make smart decisions in the off season because he is looking long term not at a snapshot that we took this season of our program. I will be there next Sunday in Red and Black supporting the team. GO DAWGS. So glad Rambo is ok and hope AJ heals quickly.

The injury to Green will hurt, but it could be a blessing in disguise. The young WRs need some playing time and they have talent. It could be fun watching King and Wooten develope. I am also intrested in Brown getting some PT. UGA should be able to survive Kentucky without Rambo if the ground game continues to click. What do you guys think of USC? I understand that the Trojans are playing a freshman QB, but what happened to that great defense?

Dewsdad,
I am also against booing your own team. However, let’s not pretend this problem is limited to UGA. Go to any SEC stadium, and see what the fans do when their team turns the ball over a couple times. I haven’t been to any GA Tech games this year, but I know their fans booed a lot during the Chan Gailey years.

I hope AJ Green is well in 14 days! LOL! I love hearing the UGA redneck fans are booing their own team. That is sweet! Can you now understand why some many folks hate UGA fans? Great School, Great Program, Great Coach, Cheap Low Class Fans……When will they ever learn? Cheer for your boys win or lose. The sad truth is 97% of UGA fans could not graduate from the Barbizon School or the Gupton Jones School of Funeral Service. If you are a great athlete, think twice about where you go to college and how quick this trash will turn on you! There is a great coach in Atlanta building a winning tradition and you get a great degree as well. It ain’t easy, but it is worth it….trust me. Avoid the insanity and consider your future.

JohnnyDangerDawg, No, booing is not limited to Sanford stadium. Hell, some jerks even boo at high school games. I don’t think that booing will hurt recruiting, those kids have heard it all before. There has been an eroding of manners and simple civility in this country for years now. Want proof? Just read some of the comments on this bog.

A good win for us, CMR has done something no UGA coach has done and that is beat Auburn 4 TIMES IN ROW, I think CWM stay as Secondary coach, The booing issue is so not an issue because every SEC Team hears boos when they don’t perform to the level at which they performed before in the past, i don’t think the fans are booing the players, the calls, the fumble, int and always the refs. but we are going to have to wait and see what transpires this off season… but somethings are going to have to change if UGA is going to ever get to FL’s level and a new DC would be a great start , giving up 40+ points to anybody is horrible but to give up 40+ to your arch rivals two years in row is done right maddening and that along is cause for change.

You pay your money, you have a right to boo. For the fans, football games are entertainment. If it’s not entertaining, boo all you want.
And we’ll continue to boo until the unholy triumvirate of Richt-Martinez-Bozo is gone from Athens. Hopefully that will be a few minutes after the GT game and not a year from now.
But hey, whoopee, we’re going to a bowl now. Make your reservations for… Shreveport.

The dawgs came out FLAT! They jogged out of the tunnel. I was pissed. But, I am happy with the last three quarters. 0 turnovers and only 4 penalties: that was the difference. Should be a good lesson for the puppies.
Oh yeah. The “I” has it. I was jumping for joy when the dawgs lined up in the I and ran the thing instead of faking thirteen times out of the shotgun and then handing off to a guy crossing in front 4 minutes later. I hope they keep it up. Line up and hit the holes. Don’t mess around.
AJ and Bacari are in all our thoughts and prayers. Above all else, do what is best for their health.

There is no excuse for booing in Sanford Stadium. Okay I tell you what. If you boo in Sanford and carry a sign that says “I am booing the coaches”, I will cut you some slack. Other than that, you are cheering for the opposing team. You don’t think that booing your team does not fire up an opposing team? Get real. Everyone with your preacher sermons about boos — there isn’t a single football team in this country that hasn’t heard boos when their coaches suck. So get over it already and find something concrete to piss and moan about — like getting rid of the inept BOOBo and Martinez. We could very well be stuck with these two incompetents for another year after that win last night. While the win was great over a big rival, and an SEC brother, Auburn IS NOT a good team. Just look at who they have beaten, as well as who has beaten them. So don’t start trying to wash Willie’s feet with holy water and annoint him to King of Defenses in response.
