Bobo in no hurry … but why?

Quit messing around, Mike. (Georgia Sports Communications)

I’m puzzled by the way offensive coordinator Mike Bobo flirts with using the no-huddle offense.

Over the past couple of seasons, whenever Bobo has gone hurry-up, the Dogs usually have moved the ball well. And then just as his offense is clicking in the no-huddle, Bobo will suddenly drop it and go conservative — sometimes before the drive is even over, as in the bowl game against Michigan State.

It’s as if Bobo isn’t comfortable in the no-huddle, even when it’s working.

Most recently, Georgia opened the game against Tennessee Tech in the no-huddle, then dropped it after a couple of successful scoring drives. Talking with the Bulldogs Blog, quarterback Joe Cox denied the Dogs were really playing “no-huddle.” It was, he said, just that “we wanted to get some plays run, get the line up and down fast, and try to put points on the board quick those first couple of drives. … It was just a change of pace, something that a lot of people haven’t seen us do, and it definitely caught them off guard because they were looking to the sideline trying to figure out what they needed to get in, and we went right down the field.”

Hmmm. Looked like a no-huddle offense. Worked like a no-huddle offense.

Whatever you call it, despite the success in the not-really-no-huddle change-of-pace offense, Bobo said he isn’t sure he’ll continue with it.

“It’s something we mess around with from time to time, and a lot is depending on our depth at receiver and how much we can do,” he told Bulldogs Blog. “But it was one of those games that we did want to spread them out and get our guys in space, and that’s something we could use in any game.”

Like, say, against Auburn? After all, the Tigers actually rank below Georgia in most SEC defensive statistics. We know that the fast-paced Auburn offense likes to rip off as many quick plays as they can to tire defenses.

If Georgia’s going to keep up with the Tigers in a wear-the-defenses-down shootout, as this game has the potential to become, it might be time for Bobo to quit messing around with different offensive approaches and get serious about more aggressive play-calling.

Maybe he is worried about running clock in order to keep the defense off the field.

I read a suggestion and agree with the author to change the name Wild Dawg Offensive Formation to the DINGO Formation.

Bobo has no idea what “aggressive playcalling” is. I’ve seen more creative and aggressive playcalling in Pop Warner games. Richt needs to take back the playcalling duties and let Bobo help his wife with water duties.

you see what happened against LSU. We scored too fast and gave the Tigers too much time to score, and they scored. without a halfway good defense, it really hurts the team to score real fast. The no-huddle is very exciting though.

I agree with Georgia Fan….he knows how bad Willie’s schemes are and the D will give up points…so if UGA slows the pace down and holds on to the ball the other team cannot score……problem with that logic is you have a strong running. UGA could have one if Ealy had been the man all year!

You have to have an ice-water-veined QB in order to run the no-huddle against solid defenses (not saying that AU could stop a 2 year old on a tricycle, but hey, neither can we). There are way to many decisions to be made for us to run it effectively. In other words, Bobo doesn’t trust Cox to get us into the right play and/or pass protection…which is scary since he gives us our ‘best chance to win.’

As much as it pains me to write it, Georgia Fan and Dooley are correct, scoring too quickly is a very valid concern with this defense.

Personally, as much as his playcalling has stunk at times this year, I’m still willing to give him a little more time to get it all together. It seems evident that he got the coordinator promotion before he was completely ready for it but I think he still has an opportunity to continue to grow into the role. Martinez, on the other hand, needs to catch the next bus to Western Kentucky to coach their DBs. And if he wants to leave on a positive note, he can take Fabris with him.

Used to work great when David Greene was QB. It should be easy to run now, since our “playbook” seems to have about 7 plays in it…..

Does anyone have confidence in any of the assistants at UGA? Our kicker kicked off deep and held the starting position of Tenn Tech to about the 20 each time. However, if we get in a big game, we will try that directional kickoff and let the opposing offense start at the 40 yard line.

The coaching at UGA S—-!

SadDawg, Yes, I agree……………..and call me crazy, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Derek as our head coach, Kirby Smart running our D and Chris Hatcher as OC.. I think these three would get the juices flowing with this program and win some games.

So – Booboo said he wanted to get TenTech off guard. Hmm, nothing like having to use gimmicks to keep the mighty Techies (that powerhouse somewhere between Nashville and Knoxville, but miles away (program wise) from UT and even Vandy) “off balance”. You would think that even a team half the calibur of GA would just run their offense without resorting to tricks. But after all, this is Booboo’s offense.

Forget about the no huddle:

The 3 Tennessee players arrest will not serve jail time. However will be forced to play for the Oakland Raiders, and room with Al Davis.

Apparently Kiffin brought the “family values” playbook with him from Oakland

I’ve never viewed Bobo as the weak link among the staff. Martinez gets that vote hands down. Richt has been consistent in his praise of Bobo’s playcalling. You have to remember, Richt groomed Bobo and in 2006 turned it over to him for the Tech game(we didn’t know until after the game) and in the bowl vs Virginia Tech.

He has made some mistakes and tends to get pass happy when we could run the ball successfully but, overall, I’ve never consider Bobo to be the problem.

They system is what it is and it requires a gifted QB and Cox while trying hard, just doesn’t have the skill level to be top notch. I prefer the threat of a run every now and then and we haven’t had that since DJ. That happens to be the last time we won the SEC.

one of you or more got it right Bobo will be fine with a QB that has the talent to run the offense Cox probably only has the above mentioned 7 plays to choose from because thats all he can handle . But if cox is all we have what does that say about the high profile QB’s that will both be redshirted I really think coach richt would have played one of them a month ago if they gave him a chance to win , but then again he missed on moreno so who knows .

DawginLex I agree with your point about Bobo. My only gripe

with Bobo is that he will change from a decent running attack to

passing when basic fooball 101 days you keep doing what you’re

doing until the other guy stops you. To be fair to Bobo on

that one I am not sure if it is Bobo making that decision or

Richt since CMR has said before that he will make suggestions

on plays and players he wants in the game as the game moves forward.

Same with the no huddle. My question would be is it because of

CMR knowing that the best defense is for the offenese to eat as

much of the clock as possible.

I never thought Bobo was the issue, either. He is still a little inexperienced though. The problem with the offense aside from Cox is that the play of the defense dictates what the offense will try to do. How many of you actually dread a big play by our Offense? I do. While it is great to see Smith run 60 yrds for a TD, I jkust know what will happen once the Defense gets back on the field. If you think about it, the D does not rally give up alot of yardage on big plays. No 50,60,70 yrd plays. Just 10-15 that eat up clock as well as gather first downs for the oppisition.

Richt tried the no-huddle offense his first year at UGA but abandoned it because the refs kept penalizing UGA for not allowing defenses time to reset. Richt scratched his head and said he’d never seen that penalty called in the ACC…
