Joe Cox and the Dogs have a new goal. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Say this for the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs, they know how to adjust their goals in a season of diminished expectations.
Usually, at the beginning of every season, the official goal is to win the SEC East and then the SEC championship, which makes you a contender to play for the BCS championship. Beyond that, the seniors on this team wanted to become the sixth consecutive UGA class to claim 40 or more wins.
All that’s out the window now, so the Dogs are setting their sights on winning out so they can extend their best-in-the-nation streak of consecutive seasons with at least eight wins to 13 straight years.
“Around here, a 10-win season is marginal,” quarterback Joe Cox told Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald. But now the Dogs “know we need this one to finish up the season strong and reach our new goal of being 8-4 after the regular season. … It’s not something that we have plastered all over the locker room, but it’s the only thing we can be now. It’s the best we can do. We want to be 8-4 and see what happens after that.”
Or as linebacker Rennie Curran put it in the Macon Telegraph: “For us, it’s a chance to accomplish one of our goals. We don’t have too many goals left that we can accomplish, but this is one of them that’s in our sights.”
The sad thing is that it will take a near-miraculous turnaround for the Dogs to even achieve that goal.
IS THE DRILL FINISHED?
UGA kicking legend Rex Robinson sounds kind of discouraged in his latest blog.
Says Robinson: “This year’s team has been like that box of chocolates you gave your wife for Valentine’s. At this point, whatever is left, I’m not sure I want it. Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech remain. There could be three wins or three losses just as easily. You would think that at this point of the season, you would have a feel for what team will show up this Saturday. Do you? I don’t have a clue.”
He concludes: “I don’t think the coaches have any more clue as to how this team will perform than we as fans do. This week we will all find out at the same time if this group will finish the drill or if the drill is already finished.”
What do you think, is Rex being overly pessimistic or brutally honest?

I think Rex is wrong. I have a pretty good idea what team is going to show up and how they’re going to look. They’ll look like a team that can’t move the ball and can’t stop the other team…turns the ball over…and commits dumb penalties. That about sums it up.

Congratulations, Rex! How were you able to turn down the Preacher Man’s Koolaid? Hardly anyone in the Bulldawg Nation can resist that heavenly elixer. Rex is right on. The wheels are off of the truck now, and the emporer has no clothes. That FSU crap that worked back in 1990 is old hat now. Preacher Man might still look young, but he’s a fossil when it comes to football now. The Dawg Nation will be moping around in a depressed state until we throw Preacher Man and his Medicine Show out! In the meantime, all the good recruits from the Great State of Georgia will be hooking up with all the cutting edge coaches that now surround our state and hold interior line advantage in Atlanta… Stop your UGA donations and demand change now!

Rex pretty much sums up how all of us feel.
Some express it better than others. Some are way on the lose every game so we can fire every coach side. Some are way on the other side, I’m thinking of L-DAWG. Love that poster
Most of us are around the middle. But beating two cats and a bee into the turf should would put a smile on this dawg’s face.

I can’t believe you wrote that about this team. I saw heart all season. These kids want the wins just as much as you did. They are fighting not only the other teams but a fan base that only supports you if you win. When fans boo the team and the coaches it undermines the spirit. I go back and look at our season and remember the flu hurting the team against OSU. Our fist game wasn’t a warm up it was the real deal and we had the flu hitting us. Our second lose to LSU was almost a win and except for a bad call might well have been granted we should have pulled away but LSU has shown they are a strong team. Our losses to Tennessee and Florida came after the fans really turned on this team. I read all over the internet and we have seen players get SEC player of the week and not write up on the blogs. Our kicker is up for a national award and you a former kicker don’t mention it. Please report on what is going well there are good things out there. To blame the uniforms and extra motivations for the problems is a wrong as crediting them for the win.
GO DAWGS>
People need to get behind their team not tear them down. I will ask you Bill what I asked Rex where is the coverage for the DAWGS that have done well this season.

Gee Bill, can you think of anything more depressing to write about? You are simply fueling the fire for these half-wits like St. Simons. Personally, I think we will be just fine for the balance of the season, including a win over the bugs. Look at it this way, if we lose the next 2 then our season will be the last game, if you know what I mean. And spoiling the nerds year would be most satisfying. At least we would be rid of SS and garbage like him.

whatever, they had a bad freaking year. At this point, why be pessimistic?
Green is back. The WR corps is still good the bulk of these players have largely underachieved.
The Dawgs should beat Auburn and Kentucky because they are better and the Georgia Tech defense has been slightly better than the Georgia defense and anyway that game is always close.
What’s with this gloom and doom crap? I think they can win all 3 and go to Tampa.

For better or worse, the measure of UGA’s season generally comes down to how the ‘Dogs fare against Tenn, FL, Auburn & GA Tech. Of these four, the game against the ‘Gators takes on a bit more importance, since a trip to ATL and the SECCG USUALLY requires a win in Jacksonville. Then, TN comes next in importance as they are also East Div. foes. AU and TECH are good rivals, but don’t have quite the importance of TN and FL. South Carolina is always tricky because it falls so early on the schedule. Playing SC is kinda like Thurs. & Fri. in a golf tournament; play well those days, make the cut, make some money. Lose to SC, and the ‘Dogs are looking up hill for the rest of the season. All this being said, the ‘Dogs can still go out and win 2 against their most important rivals. Will they show up to do so? I have no clue. My guess at this point in the season is no. Way too undisciplined, and I think wins in these last 3 games will go to the most disciplined team; the one that REALLY wants it. Sadly, I just do not see that attitude in this team. A real shame. Hopefully, there will be changes in the off season that address these shortcomings.

Actually it isn’t whether Rex is being overly pessimistic or brutally honest, it’s that he’s just being a smarta$$ so people will read his babble. Then again it takes a special kind of ‘kicker’ – say like Kevin Butler that always saw himself as a real football player – to have real empathy for the team and understand that this kind of criticism, coming from a guy that, at least, got an education for being able to play soccer (you know, that commie sport), and never understood the value of loyalty and support for the team, serves no purpose other than to fuel the no-nothings and fair-weatherers..

DBalcer…You are a fool. Our team got more publicity and press than they could handle last year with their #1 pre-season ranking. Frankly, we got embarrassed in our losses…especially the last one. We were outplayed and outcoached in every one of those games. We got all the press of having a good team and never showed up when it counted…leading the press to conclude that we were way over-rated. If the team and coaching staff can’t put a better game plan and performance together when all of the pieces are in place–what should you expect when you lose many of the most important pieces!?
Fast forward to this year…you think the flu beat us in game 1 or our defense not being prepared enough to stop an easy slant thrown to OSU’s biggest playmaker and very obvious target? The flu!? GTF outta here with that–Wait are you Mark Richt? You have as many excuses as he does. One slipped away against LSU but it wasn’t for a bad call…it was because our offense was totally inept for 50 minutes out of the 60 minutes of the game. You would think that the team would be angry at the slight…but they come out and get really embarrassed by Tennessee. That game was an abject coaching failure. Followed by another embarrassing loss in Jacksonville. Sure we beat up Vandy and TennTech along the way…but that doesn’t make me feel any better.
If the coaches have no idea what to expect out of the team–and they supposedly know the team inside and out…why would any member of the press come out and say the dawgs have got a shot or are doing well in these areas? It is too risky for them.
Is the kicker good? Yeah. Is AJ all world? Absolutely. Did Brett Farve, one of the greatest QB’s ever, have a bunch of press coming out of college? Not really, he played for a bad Southern Miss team. Unfortunately, we have the same thing going on here with AJ…what a waste. As good as he is, I wish he would have gone to Florida where he could really shine. Instead he has spent the entire year bailing out his QB with crazy catch after crazy catch.
You want somebody to write a positive about the dawgs? Tell the players to show up and play for the whole game in all 3 phases for a change. Tell the coaches to put together a game plan that gives us a chance to win against decent competition. String together a couple performances like that and the articles will come.
This team hasn’t earned any positive press.

The best we can expect from this team is 1-2 in the final 3 games. 3-0? yeah- right when Pigs fly down Lumpkin Street. Hopefully the young guys on this team will keep this taste in their mouth for a long time and will drive them next year. The other problem- coaching hopefully will be addressed in the off season. There was a total lack of iscipline on this team TOTAL. The dancing at the beginning of the 4th qtr when we are TIED and the neumerious uniform changes points to one thing- NO CLUE. Best case is we dont become bowl elgible so we dont go someplace and get embarrassed. If this team had any drive- it would have shown up way back against UT. I am tired of hearing Cox tell us they are learning and working hard.

Obviously they haven’t achieved any goals all season. Here’s a realistic one: Try to score on Auburn, UK, or GT. Just a single touchdown. Make that your goal.
Or maybe a good goal would be to not be laughed off the field in whatever bozo uniforms you wear next week.

As a Dawg fan, I would rather see CMR begin using our younger players so we can see what we have for next season. If not, it’s going to be deja vu all over again. And another season like this one and it’ll be all over for CMR. Call me crazy but, I really believe our best athletes are sitting on the bench…especially at defensive backfield and at quarterback. Anyway, just my opinion.
