Bulldog Bites: ‘We don’t have too many goals left’

Joe Cox and the Dogs have a new goal. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Joe Cox and the Dogs have a new goal. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Say this for the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs, they know how to adjust their goals in a season of diminished expectations.

Usually, at the beginning of every season, the official goal is to win the SEC East and then the SEC championship, which makes you a contender to play for the BCS championship. Beyond that, the seniors on this team wanted to become the sixth consecutive UGA class to claim 40 or more wins.

All that’s out the window now, so the Dogs are setting their sights on winning out so they can extend their best-in-the-nation streak of consecutive seasons with at least eight wins to 13 straight years.

“Around here, a 10-win season is marginal,” quarterback Joe Cox told Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald. But now the Dogs “know we need this one to finish up the season strong and reach our new goal of being 8-4 after the regular season. … It’s not something that we have plastered all over the locker room, but it’s the only thing we can be now. It’s the best we can do. We want to be 8-4 and see what happens after that.”

Or as linebacker Rennie Curran put it in the Macon Telegraph: “For us, it’s a chance to accomplish one of our goals. We don’t have too many goals left that we can accomplish, but this is one of them that’s in our sights.”

The sad thing is that it will take a near-miraculous turnaround for the Dogs to even achieve that goal.

IS THE DRILL FINISHED?

UGA kicking legend Rex Robinson sounds kind of discouraged in his latest blog.

Says Robinson: “This year’s team has been like that box of chocolates you gave your wife for Valentine’s. At this point, whatever is left, I’m not sure I want it. Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech remain. There could be three wins or three losses just as easily. You would think that at this point of the season, you would have a feel for what team will show up this Saturday. Do you? I don’t have a clue.”

He concludes: “I don’t think the coaches have any more clue as to how this team will perform than we as fans do. This week we will all find out at the same time if this group will finish the drill or if the drill is already finished.”

What do you think, is Rex being overly pessimistic or brutally honest?

I think Rex is wrong. I have a pretty good idea what team is going to show up and how they’re going to look. They’ll look like a team that can’t move the ball and can’t stop the other team…turns the ball over…and commits dumb penalties. That about sums it up.

The wheels are off of the truck now, and the emporer has no clothes. That FSU crap that worked back in 1990 is old hat now. Preacher Man might still look young, but he’s a fossil when it comes to football now. The Dawg Nation will be moping around in a depressed state until we throw Preacher Man and his Medicine Show out! In the meantime, all the good recruits from the Great State of Georgia will be hooking up with all the cutting edge coaches that now surround our state and hold interior line advantage in Atlanta… Stop your UGA donations and demand change now!

I can’t believe you wrote that about this team. I saw heart all season. These kids want the wins just as much as you did. They are fighting not only the other teams but a fan base that only supports you if you win. When fans boo the team and the coaches it undermines the spirit. I go back and look at our season and remember the flu hurting the team against OSU. Our fist game wasn’t a warm up it was the real deal and we had the flu hitting us. Our second lose to LSU was almost a win and except for a bad call might well have been granted we should have pulled away but LSU has shown they are a strong team. Our losses to Tennessee and Florida came after the fans really turned on this team. I read all over the internet and we have seen players get SEC player of the week and not write up on the blogs. Our kicker is up for a national award and you a former kicker don’t mention it. Please report on what is going well there are good things out there. To blame the uniforms and extra motivations for the problems is a wrong as crediting them for the win.
GO DAWGS>
People need to get behind their team not tear them down. I will ask you Bill what I asked Rex where is the coverage for the DAWGS that have done well this season.

Gee Bill, can you think of anything more depressing to write about? You are simply fueling the fire for these half-wits like St. Simons. Personally, I think we will be just fine for the balance of the season, including a win over the bugs. Look at it this way, if we lose the next 2 then our season will be the last game, if you know what I mean. And spoiling the nerds year would be most satisfying. At least we would be rid of SS and garbage like him.

Green is back. The WR corps is still good the bulk of these players have largely underachieved.

The Dawgs should beat Auburn and Kentucky because they are better and the Georgia Tech defense has been slightly better than the Georgia defense and anyway that game is always close.

For better or worse, the measure of UGA’s season generally comes down to how the ‘Dogs fare against Tenn, FL, Auburn & GA Tech. Of these four, the game against the ‘Gators takes on a bit more importance, since a trip to ATL and the SECCG USUALLY requires a win in Jacksonville. Then, TN comes next in importance as they are also East Div. foes. AU and TECH are good rivals, but don’t have quite the importance of TN and FL. South Carolina is always tricky because it falls so early on the schedule. Playing SC is kinda like Thurs. & Fri. in a golf tournament; play well those days, make the cut, make some money. Lose to SC, and the ‘Dogs are looking up hill for the rest of the season. All this being said, the ‘Dogs can still go out and win 2 against their most important rivals. Will they show up to do so? I have no clue. My guess at this point in the season is no. Way too undisciplined, and I think wins in these last 3 games will go to the most disciplined team; the one that REALLY wants it. Sadly, I just do not see that attitude in this team. A real shame. Hopefully, there will be changes in the off season that address these shortcomings.

Actually it isn’t whether Rex is being overly pessimistic or brutally honest, it’s that he’s just being a smarta$$ so people will read his babble. Then again it takes a special kind of ‘kicker’ – say like Kevin Butler that always saw himself as a real football player – to have real empathy for the team and understand that this kind of criticism, coming from a guy that, at least, got an education for being able to play soccer (you know, that commie sport), and never understood the value of loyalty and support for the team, serves no purpose other than to fuel the no-nothings and fair-weatherers..

DBalcer…You are a fool. Our team got more publicity and press than they could handle last year with their #1 pre-season ranking. Frankly, we got embarrassed in our losses…especially the last one. We were outplayed and outcoached in every one of those games. We got all the press of having a good team and never showed up when it counted…leading the press to conclude that we were way over-rated. If the team and coaching staff can’t put a better game plan and performance together when all of the pieces are in place–what should you expect when you lose many of the most important pieces!?

Fast forward to this year…you think the flu beat us in game 1 or our defense not being prepared enough to stop an easy slant thrown to OSU’s biggest playmaker and very obvious target? The flu!? GTF outta here with that–Wait are you Mark Richt? You have as many excuses as he does. One slipped away against LSU but it wasn’t for a bad call…it was because our offense was totally inept for 50 minutes out of the 60 minutes of the game. You would think that the team would be angry at the slight…but they come out and get really embarrassed by Tennessee. That game was an abject coaching failure. Followed by another embarrassing loss in Jacksonville. Sure we beat up Vandy and TennTech along the way…but that doesn’t make me feel any better.

If the coaches have no idea what to expect out of the team–and they supposedly know the team inside and out…why would any member of the press come out and say the dawgs have got a shot or are doing well in these areas? It is too risky for them.

Is the kicker good? Yeah. Is AJ all world? Absolutely. Did Brett Farve, one of the greatest QB’s ever, have a bunch of press coming out of college? Not really, he played for a bad Southern Miss team. Unfortunately, we have the same thing going on here with AJ…what a waste. As good as he is, I wish he would have gone to Florida where he could really shine. Instead he has spent the entire year bailing out his QB with crazy catch after crazy catch.

You want somebody to write a positive about the dawgs? Tell the players to show up and play for the whole game in all 3 phases for a change. Tell the coaches to put together a game plan that gives us a chance to win against decent competition. String together a couple performances like that and the articles will come.

This team hasn’t earned any positive press.

The best we can expect from this team is 1-2 in the final 3 games. 3-0? yeah- right when Pigs fly down Lumpkin Street. Hopefully the young guys on this team will keep this taste in their mouth for a long time and will drive them next year. The other problem- coaching hopefully will be addressed in the off season. There was a total lack of iscipline on this team TOTAL. The dancing at the beginning of the 4th qtr when we are TIED and the neumerious uniform changes points to one thing- NO CLUE. Best case is we dont become bowl elgible so we dont go someplace and get embarrassed. If this team had any drive- it would have shown up way back against UT. I am tired of hearing Cox tell us they are learning and working hard.

I think Rex is being a little brutal and a little honest. The honest truth is we are unsure as to which running game and defense we are going to get. There have been moments in which I thought the D looked nice against strong competition this year and then times they looked lost (obviously we all have seen that). The same goes with the running game, but I think we all agree that mistakes by Cox and penalties we what killed the offense against Florida. We were moving the ball and I think our team always gives a great effort so I think Rex is a little brutal there. We were close to beating LSU, OSU, AND I think we all would have loved to seen how the UF game turns out minus 2 penalties and 2 stupid interceptions (isn’t that what everyone says). Football isn’t about “what-if’s though….

Nor is football about moral victories when you are a program of this caliber, in the south, and with this fan base. HOWEVER, how many of us can truly look at our 4 losses and say that we were going to beat OSU (ranked in the top 15), LSU (ranked in the top 15) and UF (uhh..#1) this year with what we knew was coming back. Sure, the UT loss sucked, hurt, shocked us, made us slap women and children, etc…, but you take that out and how many people could say get UGA should get rid of Richt?

Yes, our D-Coor. has got to go, the way the coaching staff operates needs examining, and we MUST find a QB soon, but EVERY program goes through this. ITS CALLED A DOWN YEAR!!! We have had GREAT success over the past 9 years with Richt, but who really thought we would be 8-1 or 7-2 right now? We all wished it would happen, but it doesn’t always work that way. We just have grown accustomed to Richt getting it done when we didn’t think it would happen. Sure last year’s #1 pre-season ranking got everyone hyped, but did you really think it could be done? There was too much “I” and “Me” on that team… Every successful business, organization, leader, etc…has to examine its system and tweak it to make it better. Richt is smart and he’ll do what needs to be done after this mess.

….And so is Paul Johnson which means this is the BEST time to be a football fan in this state.

I, for one, believe this team will be 8-4 at the end. Tech should beat us this year, but there is something to prove I feel. Maybe it’s me just beleiving in our coach and players, but if I am wrong..there are worse things in life to be wrong about. I think at the end of the year, the TENN loss is the only loss we should be scratching our heads about. It will get better in Athens and it will get better with true fans who root for the Red & Black no matter what because 1) we “get it”, 2) we are alumni, and 3) we have faith in a great man at a great institution.

If that isnt you, there is room at someone else’s stadium.

Nice post JetDawg…agree with a lot of what you say. Can you remember a game that we have one that wasn’t one on talent alone? Can you remember a game where the talent was even but we just out-schemed and out coached the other team? I sure can’t. Richt’s record against teams that end up in the top 25 is terrible and indicates a weak scheme, a stale scheme that is easy to prepare for, or flat poor coaching.

You pick which one…none are good. Change is overdue.

Remember that Rooskie play we tried against SC 2 or 3 years in a row (where the QB fakes a hand off with his back to the line and walks like his part of the play is over) that they blew up 3 years in a row? Afterwards Spurrier says “Yeah…they out to file that play,” real sarcastically. That is how every DC in the SEC looks at our whole offense now. They have got to be laughing about the fact that we keep trying the same stuff that was innovative in 1996.

There’s a couple of things you can take to the bank in the last 3 games: 1. At least 10 penalties per game 2. At least 2 interceptions 3. Defense will give up at least 21 points 4. Poor coaching

The thing is, I don’t see much improvement coming next year. Georgia is losing 3 dbs, 3 dls, Curran will probably leave also,(there’s no reason for him to stay if he goes 1 or 2nd round) and a new quarterback with no game experience will lead the team. Mix that in with the SAME coaching staff…Next year will be WORST than this year!

Just kidding, but I wonder if Oklahoma getting the same attention the Dawgs are. I can tell you what, UGA will be fine. I don’t know of many programs that don’t have a down year every now and then.

If Richt gets a 100 yard rusher, he is 38-3.

Ealey beat Herschel Walker’s High School TD total by 60%!!! Ealey’s averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Ealey finished with one of the top rushing records in the HISTORY of High School football.

Give Ealey the ball 20 times a game and we will win out. Ealey ran for 55 td’s in 1 year in High School. He’s UNSTOPPABLE.

Let’s get our running game going–a good goal to build momentum for next year, and to finish 2009 in the top 25.

I’ll say it again, one more time!!!!!! White on White is alright. It brings out the fight. Red and Black looks kinda dead. It brings out the thug instead.. The Dawg’s are tasting some of their own crap. GT is learning some very good rap.. GO JACKETS!!!!!!!

Hey, I’ll contribute to any blog if it seems interesting.

The Auburn game should be a good measure of UGA’s merit right now. They have a decent W-L record, but they aren’t Bama, LSU or Florida. Not Arkansas, not Tennessee among the middlings (as far as I can tell).

jesse james – I was wondering the same thing about Oklahoma. Plus, add in the bowl disfunctionality.

I figure Bob Stoops and Mark Richt know alot more about running a college football program than Rex Robinson, all these venters and all these journalists. I saw Tommy West’s interview after he was dismissed at Memphis. Alot of people think he was wrong. I agree with him. It’s like the news, the negative is always magnified and people love controversy so people will do anything to sell papers and TV ads. I imagine Coach Stoops and Coach Richt, like all other coaches could care less what opinions are out there other than their coaches and players. God Bless all Veterans!!

Nice goals …

Saragin SOS rankings:

UGAg – 10
Georgia Tech – 12
LSU – 17
BAMA – 25
Florida – 42
(you can see it here: http://www.kiva.net/~jsagarin/sports/cfsend.htm)

Essentially, Tech plays the same SOS as UGAg … Tech is 9-1, 7th in the nation …

Georgia is , urm, 5-4 and 37th in the nation …

Dawgs lost their bite …

UGA doesn’t need goals. When you sign with the Dawgs, you know what is expected. Be the best you can be! If that means a National Championship, SEC Championship, A BCS Bowl or a 5 and 4 record with a chance to still go bowling you go for it. The only goal UGA should have, like most programs, should be to be the best= NATIONAL CHAMPS.

I hope they fire Willie soon so I can be the new DC. I have done such a great job with the D-line. Jeff Owens can be blocked by a freshman.

JacketFan – I’ve got to figure out the details on how Sagarin does the SOS thing. Florida doesn’t surprise me due to the multiple patsies they scheduled. The Tech and Georgia rankings being equal (within some margin of statistical whoop-de-do) is surprising. Tech didn’t play Florida or LSU or OkState. Tech did play Miami, VaTech and Clemson. Not equal for those two groups, in my opinion. Miss. St isn’t horrible, though, and Jacksonville St. is clearly better than Tennessee Tech (although that will be fully determined when they play each other. It’s got to be more than that.

Hey Jetdawg – not sure why you’re scratching your head over the VOLS loss – Georgia simply ran into a much better team. And now that Crompton is the top SEC QB, the team has gotten even better than when they played Georgia. They have a firey coach who has driven passion and great coaching back into the program. Something the Dawgs could use.

On the SOS, VaTech #4, FSU #5, Miami #11.
VaTech played Bama, Nebraska, GT, FSU and Miami.
FSU played BYU, GT, Clemson and Miami.
Miami played Oklahoma, GT, FSU, Clemson and VaTech.

Okay, so you need a computer to figure it out…I guess.
