Washaun Ealey runs in for his second touchdown. (Brant Sanderlin, bsanderlin@ajc.com)

Midway through the third quarter of Saturday’s game, shortly before the stands started emptying, one of my neighbors at Sanford Stadium, a lady lawyer, sighed and asked, “How did we end up playing Tennessee Tech? This is not interesting.”

Precisely. This was a game where if it had been interesting, it would not have been a good thing for the home team and UGA fans would be in an uproar again.

It was pretty much what was expected, both good and bad: The Georgia offense roared off to a fast start, taking a 31-0 halftime lead, and then lost interest in the second half. Washaun Ealey continued to tantalize, with two touchdowns and 89 yards rushing (44 of them on one of his touchdown runs) and Caleb King, the starter, added another 71 yards as Georgia rushed for a total of 304.

Willie Martinez’s defense notched its first shutout since 2006. Joe Cox didn’t throw an interception, but Georgia managed to keep its string of games with a turnover going thanks to a deep pick thrown by backup Logan Gray, who was largely ineffective in relief. And the penalties continued to pile up, this time 11 (mostly false starts by the offensive line).

Speaking of penalties, one of the two most exciting plays of the game, a fantastic zig-zagging punt return for a touchdown by Prince Miller, didn’t count because of a holding call.

But on the plus side, two-way player Branden Smith took a direct snap in a “Wild Dawg” formation and zipped down the sideline 52 yards to the end zone. He actually topped King for second place in rushing for the day with 72 yards on three carries.

Yes, it would have been nice to see more scoring in the second half, but frankly after the season we’ve had so far, a boring romp was just what the Bulldog Nation needed.

Okay, I’ve seen enough of Logan Grey. Logan can continue practicing fair catches. Cox is the man this year so Murray and Mettenberger will fight it out during the spring. Personally, I like to see Mettenberger coached up to start. At 6′5″ and 230 he is better built to run the pro style offense.

Ealey needs to be our starter. No questions asked. So he missed ONE key block in the Flo/UGA game. Do you honestly think that that ONE missed block was the reason we lost. No, it was poor passing by Joe Cox. Richt said he wouldnt start Ealey cuz of the missed block, yet Joe KEEPS throwin int.(aside from today,Tenn.Tech) So givin that, WHY DIDNT RICHT PUT AARON MURRAY AS 2ND STRING WHEN WE ALL SAW JOE SLOWLY RUINING THE OFFENSE earlier this season???

A Boring romp is anything BUT what this group of underachievers needed. They needed to get in there against a real team and continue to test their skills. Beating up on a lesser opponent for a win? You’re NOT serious? Why don’t ya schedule a high school team next time. Or better yet, run Auburn and Kentucky into the ground like Tennessee Tech. Better watch out or folks will start calling the Dawgs for THEIR homcoming romps.

Logan Gray has to transfer while he still can. If he looked this bad against Tenn Tech…is there reason to believe the guy will ever be an effective QB for UGA?

Wasted scholarship right there, recruiting a QB that doesn’t fit what you run to begin with, and you try and “make him” into a pro style QB when the skill set just isn’t there.

I wish the guy nothing but the best, but if he’s looking out for himself, he’d transfer somewhere to run a spread offense.

Well, we all know UGA has not defeated Auburn four straight times since the 1940’s. Folks, it isn’t going to happen for us next week. Auburn is going to take us to the woodshed something like 27-14. They have a mediocre run D, but they always play better when they face UGA and Bama (expecially UGA). Ben Tate will run wild next week, certainly for over 100 yards. This UGA team will have 10-12 penalities all over again…and Joe Cox will turn the ball over. Why? Because all of these continued problems are things that get corrected in the offseason by GOOD coaching, something UGA does not have at this time. You cannot correct the kind of undisciplined play in a practice week. Today very well may be the final win of the year, and it was by NO MEANS impressive. Kentucky will also run wild on this team, and Tech, well, the only question is can we hold them under 40 points (nope, but we’ll score in the 30’s).

Nice win dogs, but not letting the younger players “play to win” is typical of cmr and why ur program is failing… It is not running up the score, if you are doing it with the backups, the better programs let their young players get quality opportunities or playing time, when they play the lesser quality opponents. But please keep CMR and his clowns, it just ensures we keep winning the east. Also, it does not really matter who you schedule, it is about winning, just win baby that matters…

Dawgs won 38-0 and if you lived outside of Georgia the game was on the ESPN plan. What I don’t understand is why we continued to run Cox out there. Either Gray can play or he is destined for special teams. We should have hung at least 60 on these guys like Auburn handled Furman. We looked very uninspired in the 2nd half. What a waste of a year for poor Murray. He should be playing or at least backing up Cox. I hope he stays with the program.

Congratulations Dawg fans, you’ve just won your 5th and final game of of your less than mediocre season. Three straight losses will ice the cake. Let’s speculate a probable score for your tumble into Bobby Dodd Stadium. If you only have 10 penalties, the Jackets will win with a probable score of …say 38-17. If you wear your tacky black helmets and pants and commit more than 10 penalties, the Jackets will win with a score of ……let’s say 52-9. Either way, you lose…..again!! If dawg fans are interested in watching a really great bowl game on TV during the holidays, watch GA Tech in a BCS game. It should provide you with some ideas about what great football is all about. I’d bet that most UGA fans have forgotten, given the last time you played a decent game of football. If you apply now, it might be possible that the USA conference would offer your team a place in its conference. However, upon consideration of winning only 5 games this year, you just might be declined. At any rate, GA Tech fans everywhere do hope that the UGA nation enjoys a quiet, restful, and uneventful holiday season watching such great bowl games on television. This is a great opportunity for UGA fans to invite some of the players to spend the holiday season with them being that they will be home. It’s the least you could do. Happy Holidays to the entire Dawg Nation!!!

Wow, you must really despise Buck to make such laughable arguments against him. Of course he is a legend at Georgia, for all of the right reasons. He came from one of the greatest High School programs in the entire country. He won in dramatic comebacks. He won individual honors that brought prestige to the program. He threw the pass that is part of one of the most famous plays in college football history. He won SEC Championships. He lead our team to a National Championship. He was a DAWG!!!

What more do you want???? BTW, that question is completely rhetorical. I have no interest in ANYTHING else you might have to say about UGA football or anything else.

Someone wrote that Coach Richt is 27-19 against Top 25 teams, ranked in one Top 25 Poll or another at game time. That is meaningless. The facts of the matter are that teams are ranked based upon history in the first month or so of the polls while they flail away at opponents like UGA played today.

If an opponent is ranked in the Top 25 at Number 22, as Kentucky was when we played them in 2007, and then they lose 3 of their last 4 games that regular season as Kentucky did in 2007 to end up 8-5, clearly that is NOT a Top 25 team. Who gives a rat’s behind if an opponent is ranked in the Top 25 at the time we played them that year. The question is whether or not the team ended up on the Final AP Poll Top 25 that year we played them, or not. Kentucky in 2007 at 8-5 clearly did not.

Coach Richt is in fact 17-20 against in fact Final AP Poll Top 25 teams. That is a losing record.

Attempting to re-write that as 27-19 against Top 25 teams at game time, is just so much baloney.

The same writer did point out that in fact Coach Richt has a LOSING RECORD also against the real football teams in The SEC.

This author writes it as 16-18 against Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama and LSU.

He is right on that too, of course.

Take this year, for example.

Would you say at Number 120 of 120 teams as the dead last worst at penalties in the nation, that penalties are and have been an issue ?

Today, we had 11 more penalties for 86 more penalty yards against UGA 2009.

We just keep on keeping on.

Would you say at Number 120 of 120 teams as the dead last worst at Turnovers in the nation, that turnovers are and have been an issue.

We have fumbled the football 3 more times today, and we threw another interception.

This is a 1-AA team with a 5-4 record.

Tennessee Tech fumbled the football and we did not get their fumble.

6 times all season long, we have come up with an interception or a fumble.

1 out of 11 fumbles by our opponents, have we come up with.

On kick-off coverage again today, our 1-AA opponent mind you returned kick-offs far better against us than we did against them. That too has been the fact in every game this year.

And, on punts to us again today, we did not get under the football and catch it. We haven’t done that either all season long. We just let the ball bounce around and our opponent, then, downs it. Last week against Florida, we let 2 punts die at our 1-yard line. Nice place to start your offense.

If I am supposed to feel solace that we beat a 5-4 team of the 1-AA 38 to nothing today, I am sorry what I see is more of the same of what we have done, have been doing, and will continue to do.

And, if I am supposed to feel solace that we are 27-19 against teams ranked in the Top 25 at game time, I am sorry but in fact against teams who ended up on the Final AP Poll Top 25, we are only 17-20 in the Coach Richt Era with his sorry-butt coaching staff.

And, 16-18 against Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida and LSU.

We are not getting it done.

Don’t try to fool yourself we are.

I only have seen highlights of the game so I was not there.
One of the main highlights was Branden Smith running a touchdown
out of the wildcat formation. I would be curious to know how
many touches the guy had. If given a chance to ask someone
on the staff a question I would like to know why we got away
from trying to utilize his great speed. The guy can really go
and has had some electrifying runs . Yet even though we have need of a
playmaker to offset the lack of a big time RB # 1 continues
waiting for a rare opportunity to show his offensive skills.

Dear UGA Nation,
Being that your football team has suffered such a dreadful year and likely to continue, the Jacket Nation would like to offer you some generous tips on how to spend your Holiday Season so that you won’t have to reminisce too much on your disappointing and forgetable football season. It is likely that the day following Thanksgiving (the day before we serve you the last of your humble pie) there will be loads of Christmas sales for the ‘depressed of spirit’ to buy wonderful gifts that will distract them from your burden of shameful accomplishments (pathetic 2009 football record). One particular item that you may find useful this year is the venerable and cherished ‘Monopoly Game’. With so much time to play, you might come to discover how other teams in the SEC and Atlanta came to their recent ‘monopoly’ of football talent. Another wonderful game that we recommend, but fear you’ve already partly mastered is “Crap or Fact”. It seems that most of you last year became quite comfortable with the ‘crap’ portion as you exercised your oversized, but undeserved egos. This year with such large tracts of time available to you during the Holidays, you might wish to aquaint yourselves with the ‘Facts’ and realize how truly pathetic a 5 win season really is. The entire GA Tech nation wishes you lots of success with these wonderful games and hopefully from this time forward, you will know who holds the current ‘MONOPOLY’ and that you will be able to distinguish between Crap(your delusions of yourself) and ‘FACT’ (We own you). HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL DAWG FANS, if being left our of the bowl games doesn’t hinder such a notion.

The game was blacked out on ESPN 360 in Georgia, PPV only in Georgia by IPS. I live about 25 miles south of the Tennessee in Dalton and for some reason we are in Charter communications Tennessee region and I watched the game on 360. I know the DAWGS have a lot of problems and things to get fixed, But I believe a lot of the so called Bulldog fans are never happy no matter how they play or how much they win by. I know they were not perfect, but overall it was a 100% improvement. I know it was against a sub par team, but face it. Every major college in the country plays against teams like this. I get upset with them also, but if we supported them as much as we complain, Sanford stadium would be so Loud and Electric that no team would want to play us Between The Hedges. Go DAWGS!!

I can’t wait to shut them Bugs up again, they will put all their caps and t-shirts back in the closet after we beat them. So what if Tech wins the coastal Div. nobody will notice them, whatever image you have of yourself you are absolutely the only one that cares…. HOW DARE ANY TECH FAN COME ON THIS BLOG TO MAKE FUN OF SCHEDULING TENNESSEE TECH.

At least we blanked our I-AA opponent, Jax State made a game against you stupid f***ing dorks. You wanna know why you’re not getting more credit than Boise State for your “impressive” season…because 9-1 in the ACC is almost as impressive as 10-0 in the WAC. It’s a sh*t conference that no one wants to win this year, and your best win this year is against who? Virginia Tech? The same VT that struggled against the ECU Teacher’s College? The same VT with 3 losses?

Tech has played one team, ONE TEAM, with a somewhat complete team, and that was Miami. If it wasn’t for the constant chop blocking, you wouldn’t win a game. Enjoy it while it lasts, because the ACC can’t stay horrendous for long and neither will our dogs. You switch schedules with us, and I bet you’re looking at 5-4 right now at best, and we’d be 9-1. Who knew Clemson would play their worst half of football against you? Who knew UNC wouldn’t have an offense? Who would’ve guessed FSU would have lost a defense? That’s called “good fortune” not good coaching. Count your blessings. Trailing Vanderbilt by 3 halfway through the 3rd is nothing to be proud of. Mediocre teams hang too long with you all.

By the way, your glorious coach is going to be wearing navy and gold for a while…at Notre Dame. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to coach at a place where, in the midst of a 9-1 ACC championship season, he looks into the stands and sees empty seats.

Your program sucks, your conference sucks, your bandwagon fans suck, and your stupid once-in-a-while good season is fuc?*ng joke.

Living through a bad season as a Dawg beats the hell out of gloating over a good season as a sexless, limp-d*cked Tech dork that can’t accept the reality of why their best season in two decades isn’t going to get them a national championship.

you're kidding right?

Good grief, some people gripe about ANY and EVERYTHING!!!! The Dawgs delivered on everything we expected in a game against an inferior opponent. Like someone else said… other teams play games such as this, so why not UGA??? These are college players, many of them quite young, and I truly believe they are doing the best they can. Why wouldn’t they play better if they could??? The penalties continue to be an issue; this is surely an area that needs improvement, and CMR WAS taking them out of the game and talking to the guilty party. That’s an attempt to correct the problem. What would you have him do – bench every player who commits a penalty???? Quite being fair-weather fans and start supporting the team. Or… you can go over to the dark side and become a GATOR!!!

Just win baby is a raiders cry, but it is just as important for UGA. After having so many tough games in a row, they still have a couple more they want to win this season. Don’t worry about which bowl UGA might go, for this year it’s training for next. This team made too many mistakes, and the coaches need time to work through that. I think coming out of this year, next will be a lot better.

SEC Saturday highlighted by Alabama over LSU. Vandy held UF for a while. However, having UGA embarrass the conference another consecutive week is intolerable. Playing in Grambling uniforms one week, playing a Division II wannabe for HOMECOMING the next shows no pride and gains no respect. Looking at the upcoming schedule, this may be the last competitive game the puppies complete. Auburn, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech should start them whimpering about the refs early. Please voluntarily leave the SEC for something more your style like the Cotton Trailer Park Association. You and your toothless performances are barely tolerated by your far superior neighbors.

Jahvid Best suffered a SECOND concussion in TWO weeks for Cal and the second one looked very scary. So I have to ask…WHERE is the outcry from the Dawg Nation?? You sure didn’t seem to hold back a few weeks ago?? Where’s the outcry from all the “MDs” that seem to post on these blogs and love to give Urban Meyer free medical advice?? Hypocrites!! Lets just pray Jahvid is ok…

Astonishing points about Georgia Tech in today’s paper :

First, let’s be honest about this, Georgia Tech has NEVER ever been ranked Number 1 in the Final AP Poll. Tech claims 6 national championships in football, all in football polls that ALSO show that they have UGA Number 1 National Champions in Football 6 times as well.

Except Tech has zero Final AP Poll National Championships.

UGA does.

Second, excuse me, your stadium holds 55,000 ? You’d never know it. I see in today’s paper that UGA last weekend garnered a 20 TV rating HERE IN ATLANTA. Tech did NOT EVEN MAKE THE LIST.

Tech’s opponents scheduled for this year, are a combined LOSING RECORD against everyone else. That’s the pure definition of one sorry football schedule strength, when your opponents do NOT EVEN HAVE A WINNING RECORD against everyone else.

C11 Page C11 of today’s AJ-C :

Some top colleges are listed based upon the latest U.S. News and World Report Rankings. Interesting, as I’ve never before heard of anyone claiming that THEY ARE NUMBER 35.

Number 35.

We are NUMBER 35.

Tiddlywinks does not have those to claim to be Number 35.

Excuse me, every other school listed there, is SIGNIFICANTLY higher ranked than Georgia Tech in the U.S. News latest ranking as a college.

Third,, let’s get THE POINT that Georgia Tech FOOTBALL PLAYERS have a GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE of 48 percent.

God Almighty is all I can say.

Georgia Tech’s ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE of its football players is WORSE than UGA’s football players’ APR.

Rhodes Scholars, Georgia Tech has 3.

You’re kidding me right.

Trying to list Georgia Tech with Virginia who has 45, Duke who has 39 and Vanderbilt who have 26 is hogwash with Tech having 3.

Overall Grad Rate. Please note the hogwash of attempting to list Georgia Tech with the others with an overall graduation rate of 78 percent. Note : Football players 48 percent grad rate at Tech.

Heisman Winners, zero. Duh.

A school with no women.

Yeah, that’s where I want to go to school. I know, right ?

Not.

Who plays CUPCAKES.

And, who competes with schools with 6,800 students and 14,000 students with football players who MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, NEVER GRADUATE from Georgia Tech.

Tell me about your God Awful Academics Georgia Tech. Oh please give me this hogwash.

So, that I can tell everyone to go downtown in the slums where all the drugs and crime is, and be a part of this great academics of Georgia Tech football.

I just hope Alabama whoops Florida’s a**. I’m so tired of hearing about the “Almighty Tebow” He’ll be a 2nd rounder at best.

Who plays CUPCAKES?

November 8th, 2009

Answer: The top two teams in the nation! – Florida and Alabama Hmmmm…. they are also SEC schools! Each school has 3 cupcakes on their schedule.

BuLLDawg: None of the stuff you mention really counts where Dawg fans want it to. They don’t give extra points in the BCS poll for the size of your stadium or the number of Rhodes scholar graduates! They also don’t give style points for how well your black helmets match your black pants! Give all your TECH-UGA comparisons a rest because in the end most UGA fans only really care about the Win-Loss record of the football team. UGA is 5-4 and not even Bowl eligible at this point. They play Auburn next week- a team that hung 63 points on their appointed cupcake this week. Best of luck with that one!

Reasonable, the reason I brought up Cal is because for two weeks all I read on these blogs was how outraged Dawg fans were that Urban would even consider playing Tebow just a couple of weeks after HIS concussion. They implied very strongly that Urban would do anything to win, even put a players health or even his LIFE at risk. This in spite of the fact that UF even brought in experts from around the country and did exhaustive testing to make sure Tim would be ok to play against LSU within two weeks from his incident. At Cal you have a kid that suffers a concussion and sits out a couple of practices because he is still suffering headaches. Yet he is RIGHT back on the field playing the next Saturday. And then…disaster. Watch the replay from yesterday, it will give you chills when you see it. Yet, not a word of criticism from all those who were pilling on Meyer. Many were on this blog and some were national. Now this sad and dangerous thing happens at Cal yesterday and…silence. Not a word…

what if Stafford/Moreno hadn’t left, would the dawgs be 5-4? I think not. We would have beaten Oklahoma St. and LSU and given Florida and Tenn. a better run for their money. Anybody agree?

I also don’t think our Defense is as bad as it seems. Our sucky offense keeps putting our defense in bad situations with all the turn overs and penalties, giving the other teams short field positions. We do need to work on forcing more turnovers.

Bob, exactly my point. A lot of talent lost, especially on offense. Those are big shoes to fill, the 1st QB taken and the 1st RB taken in the draft. Not to mention Mo Mass and Allen are both starting right now in the NFL, but they were seniors and had to go. Stafford/Moreno could have stayed and then I see us at 7-2 or 8-1. Shame on them but I would’t turn down 37 million either.(Look where Bradford is sitting now, could have happened to Stafford.)

Fact is, even if your team does win I still think it’s fans are sort of slow.
I personally dont mind when Tech does well. I am a proud native of Georgia and I have no hatred for even Tech.
The fans who post in this thing are a completely off kilter bunch who queer the deal for your team.

You fans of other teams, go ahead and take your shots about a victory over Tenn. Tech. You didn’t hear us woofing when you opened the season against Jax State or ran up the score on some directional school.

I’m puzzled about this constant drumbeat of how we have no talent. Every program has its busts, but almost every player Georgia has was recruited by our major rivals. It is inexplicable to believe that we every kid we signed is a bust and everyone else got all the real deals.

Does anyone believe Tech will be able to win out without the ability to throw the ball?

Everybody wants to see our coaching staff go ballistic and rip some player’s head off for making a stupid penalty. Personally, I don’t care if they pass out lollipops, just find a way to fix the problem.

I’m begining to wonder of our constant off-sides are due to some sort of issue with our snap count. We need to find a way to help our guys focus on the movement of the ball.

The win against a hapless lower division team means absolutely nothing, and if you think it does, then keep your head buried in the sand.

Richt has to go, or we will never be playing in SEC championship games, and very seldom in a BCS bowl.

This should have been a blowout of biblical proportions. Instead we still get the dumbazz penalties, and lackluster offense. This win still doesn’t change the fact that we are a poorly coached, undisciplined team. BYE WILLIE! WHY DON’T YOU MAN UP AND LEAVE? Oh yea, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Some UGA players told David Hale that the LB calling the defensive signals fot Tenn. Tech used a cadence a very similar to the cadence used by Cox. He was doing this delibrately to make the O linemen jump. I wonder if Cox doesn’t need to vary his snap count more so that other teams can’t do this in the future. I am beginning to believe that all those illegal motion penalties are coming from snap count problems rather than a lack of disciplin. Too many different linemen and TEs have been called for illegal motion for it to be a problem with the players. If it was only a lineman or two it would be different. The only constant in the equation is the snap count. I was very pleased with the play of the freshman and sophmores, especially on defense.
