Logan Gray against the Gators. (Brand Sanderlin / AJC)
I was kind of hard on Logan Gray after his dismal appearances in the fourth quarter of the Florida game, which was a bit of a turnaround for me since I’d been campaigning all season for Mark Richt and Mike Bobo to give their backup QB more playing time.
I had liked what I’d seen of Gray in the G-Day game and all that smoke Bobo blew in preseason about special packages and a Wild Dawg offense got me kind of excited to see him. Then for most of the season he ended up restricted to the occasional handoff or one painfully telegraphed option play per game and his usual fair catch duty … until he got the mop-up call against Tennessee.
He didn’t show us much there, though he didn’t really have the opportunity, and then against the Gators he just looked horrible. Mainly his passes, and I’m not just talking about the ill-advised throw out of the end zone that turned into a pick.
This, I figured, is why we haven’t seen more of him this season. He’s just not that good and, for whatever reason, the coaches don’t want to pull the redshirt off Aaron Murray. So it’s mostly Joe Cox and only token work for Gray.
But then I got to thinking back to when D.J. Shockley was backing up David Greene. D.J. never looked that good coming into the game in relief and at times gave us the shudders he was so bad. I remember one game where Greenie got shaken up and D.J. came in and was like a deer in the headlights. And then there was the Tech game in 2004 where Shock was so bad that an injured Greene had to come back in to assure a Dogs victory.
Come the next season, Shockley was the starter, quit pressing so hard, and turned out to be a great quarterback.
Now, I’m not saying Gray is going to turn into a D.J. I don’t think that’s very likely and, in fact, I’d put money down that Murray will end up as the starter next year. But I am opening my mind again to the possibility that Gray can turn into an effective player for the Dogs, if only he can get a decent amount of meaningful playing time.
I put the blame for his lack of development at QB squarely the coaching staff. They’ve wasted him on special teams and never really given him a chance to play an entire series except when Georgia’s already gone down the tubes.
Saturday would be a great time for Gray to at least get a bunch of reps against someone other than the scout team. True to form, Bobo is only promising one series for the backup, but I’m hoping that the Dogs will get far enough ahead of Tennessee Tech in the first half that Cox can take the rest of the day off.
THE STREETS OF ATHENS ARE YOURS!

Ramming speed! (Universal Studios)
Back in my time at UGA, there wasn’t a Homecoming parade. Instead, the frats and sororities constructed elaborate displays on the front lawns of their houses. It was a tradition growing up in Athens to go for a ride down Milledge and Lumpkin on Friday night to view the various chicken wire and tissue paper creations, some of which even had moving parts.
Nowadays, there’s a parade in downtown Athens and floats have taken the place of those lawn displays. This year’s parade is set to run from 6 to 7 tonight and UGA gymnastics legend Courtney Kupets will be the grand marshal. Besides floats, there’ll also be the Redcoat Band, the UGA cheerleaders, athletes and various dignitaries. The theme of this year’s Homecoming is “Take Me Down to the Classic City.” Floats and “spirit vehicles” will be judged in both Greek and non-Greek categories.
Hopefully there won’t be anything resembling the Delta Tau Chi Deathmobile to disrupt the festivities — although that would at least make it more interesting than the usual Homecoming procession.
After the parade, UGA will hold a Homecoming carnival from 7 to 11 p.m. at Legion Field with games, midway rides and food. Admission is free for students and $5 for nonstudents.
ROUNDBALL PREVIEW AT THE STEG
Basketball, anyone?
Anyone? Beuler? Beuler?
Actually, Georgia’s basketball season doesn’t officially open until next Friday night, but Mark Fox’s first team will play an exhibition game at 7 tonight at Stegeman Coliseum against North Georgia. Admission is free.

From what I’ve seen in Logan Gray, I can understand why he doesn’t get much playing time. He’s worse that Cox if that is possible. Just have to wait for next year and Murray, this season is down the toilet.

Phil, sure he’s worse than Cox because he couldn’t beat him out of the job. What’s so bad is Murray had the best spring game and didn’t get a real chance at the job this fall. Richt has the same feeling about Cox as he had with Joe T – “will be a good leader”, “never complained for all those years backing up…..”, “will be a game manager”, ect, etc. Richt has a soft spot in his heart for guys that just cannot become starters on their own, guys that just have to outlast everyone else to play. It’s nice of him to feel like that, but let’s face it, Joe T and Joe Cox would have never gotten on the field for Saben, Myer, Miles, Petrino, or Kiffen, ….. well, ….. unless they were facing a Willie Martinez defense!!!!

I agree Bill. The coaching staff has totally hosed Gray. Instead of getting reps with the offense, they have had him over there with Fabris and the rest of the special teams looking for four leaf clovers for 2 years.
No wonder he is not ready.
My question is this…when exactly did the coaches think they were going to get him ready!?!? They know Cox is a Senior…and apparently it takes a full 2 years in the system to get a QB to learn our 7 plays…so Murray and Mett wouldn’t be ready. That leaves only Gray for next year.
“Anybody seen Gray around here?”
“What’s that? Oh…Fabris found one huh. Good job Special teams!”
“Alright–Bring it in men! Listen. There will be no practice for the next two weeks. Coach Fabris has finally found a four leaf clover. This should give us a better chance to win than anything else we’ve tried all season. Dismissed.”
(The team cheers, showers, and heads out to the bar.)

I drove my Milledge Bus, down Milledge no less, at the end of one of the Homecoming parades in the early eighties. A drunk frat boy laying on a lawn openend one eye and stared at my bus. He rolled over and yelled at his buddies that my float looked just like a bus.

Bill, the reason that you liked Logan in the G-Day game was because he was going against our putrid defense. You saw what happens when he goes against a team that has a defense. Pick 6 city.

From what I’ve seen, Logan Gray hasn’t had a real, honest chance to show anything, and I’m not sure Bobo knows how to utilize his skills or when to use them. Bobo wasn’t the same type of QB as Gray, and I don’t think he’s had any experience with the wildcat as an coordinator. All I’ve seen Gray do is one play and out when the game was undecided, and even then all he got to do was hand the ball off. It’s not fair to judge him until he gets to stay in for complete possessions when he gets to use all of his skills.
In the Florida game, why did they have him throwing from the end zone anyway? That’s the time you want him handing off or faking the hand off and running himself. Instead they’ve got him passing when the defense is teeing off on him? That doesn’t make sense!

Logan is a good athlete, but maybe not that good of a QB. I believe he will play at WR or DB or something like that next year. Bill, the coaches can’t play him and if he gets hurt at QB and all they have left is Cox. At this point it is STUPID to waste a year on Murray or Mettz! It may not be the coaching staffs fault either….maybe there is not that much to develop at QB with Gray. He will get a lot of playing time in tomorrow. L-Dog, you don’t have to type the same thing everytime. It’s perfectly fine to be a “Blind Homer”! I think it is Great to Be a Georgia Bulldog!!! Cuz, you are usually right on the mark with your comments too. We can be blind homers, because we have NO CONTROL over what decisions are made in Athens. Bill, if you think because you write an article for the AJC, you have any control, I believe you are sadly mistaken! Go Dawgs….we win 3 of next 4.

I know the response I’m going to get to this, but here it is anyway.
Seems that we have very short memories about players. I particularly like the note about DJ Shockley. I’d forgotten but it’s true — he was scary bad when he came into games for spot duty early on. Seems people were trying to figure out who was going to play QB the next year. Oh, and he couldn’t throw the ball at all — strictly a runner (was the perception).
Anyway, thought to take a look at Logan Gray’s background to see what he’s doing on the UGA team in the first place (btw, to me, he just moves like an athlete, a small thing but he does). Why did UGA recruit this guy? Well, it’s pretty obvious. Consider the following:
Rivals Rating = 5.8.
Rating Breakdown: 6.0-5.8 = All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation’s top 300 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team.
10th Ranked QB in the nation, 173rd rated player at any position
An EA SPORTS Elite 11 Quarterback
“Not only a great quarterback, but a great athlete.”
6’ 2” — 192 Lbs. (current / 185 Lbs. out of H.S.)
40: 4.45 secs
Shuttle: 4.25
Vertical: 36 inches
Think the kid could use some playing time.
But, hey, what do I know. It seems to be the fashion to assume that some highly-touted freshman with no SEC game experience at all is the answer to our prayers. Doubt it. But, for me, I’d like to see Logan Gray play a half and settle in and see how he does.
Uh, why not? at this point?

Let’s just hope this year has instilled some humility in our boys. I get the feeling there is a huge sense of Entitlement among our players. Just because you put on the uniform doesn’t guarantee anything. You still have to put in the work on and off the field. Once again, even that comes back to coaching (Willie, Bobo, you listenin?)

can’t believe gray hasn’t gained any weight since he arrived…Is that right, 185 out of high school and now only 192. he looks reall small on the field. I do feel like he has been greatly misused. how about converting to a ball hawking defensive back. At 6′2″, we could used his height and speed. just saying, i am sure he would rather play than fair catch punts. maybe our turnover ratio would be a little more balanced.

I agree with CaliDogg completely. I think everybody is jumping on the Murray bandwagon a little early. Logan hasn’t had any playing time. And then he gets stuck into a game against the #1 D in the country, having to throw out of his own endzone!!! What do you think was going to happen?
I personally think that Logan will be our QB next year. He is 6′2″, fast, athletic, and has a strong arm. He’s essentially a taller more athletic version of Murray. Give him significant playing time tommorrow CMR!!

So the players are saying once again they are not going to let the season go to waste….they have learned from their mistakes….hmmmmmm seems like I heard the same after Okie State…..UT…….and now UF. Curran says we are going to prove we are good- well, against Tenn tech I would hope so, but I have a strange feeling this bunch will make Tenn tech look great and come very close to geting their first win over a major team. talk to me after Auburn, KY and Tech. My guess is same talk..same results. We finish the final four games 2-2 at best..1-3 would not be a surprise with a couple of blowouts to add to UT and UF games……I wish I could be more positive but a team with a total lack of discipline and one that needs black helmets to get motivated to play our biggest rival leaves alot to be desired. Stafford only completed over 60% one year. Cox, Stafford, Logan, Murray and Mettenberger are ALL ELITE 11 QBs. Several teams were recruiting them. The scouts maybe wrong about 1 or 2 but there are 4 in Athens now.

CMR has terminal “Bobby Cox Syndrome”. He values loyalty and senority over talent and ability. Joe Cox couldn’t start for any SEC or ACC team with the exception of NC State. While Joe Cox is a slight upgrade over Joe III, tell me why Brian Evans and Prince Miller continue to start in our defensive backfield? Senority over talent, and that’s what is going to eventually cost Richt his job.

Really? Wasted his time on special teams? We’ve beeched all year long that we don’t spend any time on special teams as it is…what 10 minutes of each practice? Seems to me Gray has gotten plenty of reps at qb. I truly think that both Cox and Gray have looked good in practice…good enough that even the coaches are surprised at the poor play during the games…it happens to some players, and unfortunately, it seems we have a lot of players with that deer-in-the-headlights look during games. But it isn’t a special teams issue at all.
Richt is the responsible party. Fire him.
November 6th, 2009
5:06 pm
The Logan Gray fiasco is a case in point why Mark Richt should be fired. He’s orchestrated this mess. He’s responsible for what happens with his team. Is he the CEO or isn’t he? If he’s not, then who is? And if he is, my understanding of one of the CEO’s duties, I was one once, is to look at subordinates work and if I didn’t like it, send it back for revision or trash-can it. So shouldn’t we assume then that he likes things as they are?
What is going on in Athens that makes it look like Richt doesn’t know what is happening on his watch?
And one final thing while I’m at it. Richt until today has repeatedly said he doesn’t read or talk about it the “it” being the fury that
is going on on these pages, the talkshows and elsewhere, the talk among friends trying to make some sense out of this diaster.
There is plain and simple something wrong with Richt. He’s more than just detached. Georgia is not his primary concern. I don’t know what it is but we see the results, a team in total disaray.
Time to move on to new faces from the top to the bottom and that includes Garner.
What is left after the breakdowns of the OL, DL, LBs, CBs, DEs, (the special teams are better) no one designated at RB with 2/3 of the season gone, no experience at QB going into next year. Is that acceptable? Why would anyone want this whiner and aliber back? He even said he was going to fix the penalties and turnovers. WRONG! We’re just as bad. What is there about this man beginning in 2005 that is worthy of retention? Zip, nada, nothing.
After all theswe years, I’ve lost heart. I can no longer get excited about Georgia football and our penchant for mediocrity. It’s time that this stops. It’s time that we start anew, THE DREAM WILL NEVER DIE!
Everything else has, however.

Anybody really thought why Richt has a soft heart when it comes to Cox?? Well Richt was a backup qb at Miami!!! He played behind Kelly!!! Jim Kelly and he thinks if he ever got the shot he would have been great!! So he keeps giving Cox the start because he sees alot of him in Cox!!! But what bothers me is Gray has never been given a chance to play any substantial time when the game wasn’t over!!! Sure he looked like crap against the Gaytors but I don’t think Peyton Manning could have came in and done anything in that game!!! It was over and his teammates knew it was over and the Gaytors would have teed off on anybody!! I agree 100 percent with you Bill I too was excited hearing from Richt that we would use some Wild Dawg!!!! But with Gray to have any success in the Wild Dawg you have to give him a chance to throw the ball!!! When he has came in on certain plays this year all he has done was run the ball!!! Not 1 time did he come in and a pass was thrown with the game was not out of hand!!! The problem with our offense this year was because we practice running 2 different offenses in the summer!! One kind with Cox at qb and the other with Gray!!! Too different qb’s !!!! That says no identity!!! Next year I see the same problem because who starts for us Gray or Murray????? We have to get next years qb some playing time this YEAR!!!!!! Cox had his chance it didn’t work out!!! Defense I will never give any hope 4 this year or as long as Martinez has anything 2 do with it!!! Richt YOU GAVE COX MORE OF A CHANCE THAN YOU EVER HAD AND IT HASN’T WORKED OUT!!!! TIME TOO MOVE ON TOO THE NEXT STARTING QB!!!! WHOEVER IT WILL BE!!!

Logan should have never been put into the situation he was in Jax. A major coaching blunder. He is a better QB than Joe C. Bank on it.

Any rational person (Buck Belue?) can look at the overall UGA football experience from 2009 and be thoroughly disappointed and baffled at some of the things they see. From coaching and preparation to performance on the field, this team is devastatingly poor.
A defensive secondary that still stars Reshad Jones, Prince Miller, and Bryan Evans. These guys aren’t going to stop anyone, which is made even worse by Willie Martinez sapping their aggressiveness. Defensive line? Zero pressure. This defense doesn’t scare anyone in the SEC. Truly embarrassing.
Very poor QB play, compounded with zero run game and unimaginative play calling. Offensive line is the biggest disappointment of the season. WR’s seem ok; Green is outstanding.
NEVER SHOW UP IN BIG GAMES. 100% non-competitive v. Florida (2009), Florida (2008), Tennessee (2009), Alabama (2008). It’s not the loss that truly mattters; rather, we get the impression that we are moving further from the level of UF rather than closer to it.
I’m not content with “competing for the SEC East.” It’s time to get UGA another shot at a national championship in football. Richt stays but all 3 coordinators need to go.
Go Dawgs.

Bobo and Richt have wasted many things, players, fans etc..
I too think that Logan was poorly coached and deserved better. He was marked as a failure last year.. returning kicks?
I would transfer to Missouri and let Bobo screw up another QB.
Bobo couldn’t coach a Pewee QB.
All of the go along cronie dawg fans who go to church with Richt, blame Willie M for everything.. His defense has not been that bad. Not good but not that bad. They just want a great D to bail out a sorry offense .. See CBVG. Poor guy.
The offense has been the worst that I have even seen at UGA. Bobo lost three games last year including to GT, with two first round draft picks and AJ Green!
Bobo = Dumbo. Logan has talent.

The reason our Qb’s take so long to get ready to play is simple!!! Bobo is offensive coordinator and QB coach!!! Therefore he has not spent alot of time coaching our backup Qb’s!!! He has been trying to work on our offense with Cox running it!!! Everybody knows how that has turned out!!! Bobo may or may not be a good offensive coordinator but I believe he has in the past when he was only our Qb coach he did well!!! It was Bobo that went to Richt and said Shockley needed some playing time!!! So the solution to our offense boils down to have Bobo coach our Qb’s!!! Richt goes back to coaching our offense!!!! Get a new younger defensive coaching staff that likes to overload the line of scrimmage!!! If we do this and with our schedule next year it could be a special year in 2010!!

L-Dog: Blind devotion to your team, win or lose, could cause you to end up like Tech was until they moved on from Gailey to Johnson. It’s ok to support your team, but you also have to step back and see if the program is progressing in both recruiting, coaching, discipline, and on the field performance. Georgia has always been able to recruit with the best. Richt has the ability to convince top athletes – - and more importantly, their families – - to join him and his program. You have to wonder why, with perennial top-10 classes, Georgia is not in the hunt for a NC every year. Florida has won 2 out of the last 3 BCS NCs with talent that is no better than Georgia’s. Why can’t Georgia?

With Willie’s Weak D on the field, does it really matter who plays qb for Georgia? Tech’s gonna mop up the floor with us …. I expect them to score 50. Can this season end soon enough? If it weren’t for the month of practice for the young players … I wish we’d spend the holidays at home (we still might with the way Willie’s D plays. I’m also sick of passionate fans being critized for questioning what’s going on at Georgia. It would be worse if they didn’t care. I think UGA fans have lots of things to scream about ….. don’t have time or space to even list a few of them.

LDAWG – Keep up the talk my fellow alumn!!!! True Dawg fans will always support the RED and Black no matter what! I will be there tomorrow for Homecoming and do hope to see Logan for at least a half.
My question to all is, I understand Richt wants to stick with Cox but…wouldn’t it make some sense to prep your QB for next year NOW so that we dont fall into the “the QB position is a question mark for 2010″
I for one don’t want to go through growing pains, that might equal another slow start and possible 4-4 through 8 games with a signal caller who is not ready til midseason. Any thoughts?

If i recall didn’t Matthew Stafford take over after the Florida game his Freshman year and finished with a bowl win vs. Va. Tech.
The next year the QB position was solidified. Not saying we have another Stafford on hand but it would be nice to have a QB ready for 2010 now instead of next September.

If I recall Grey was the Mizzou player of the year in High School his senior year. If not Mizzou, I believe it was at least another mid-western state. I wonder why Richt and Company would recruit this type of Quarterback for the program if they did not have intentions of utilizing his capabilities? 7 years before Grey Richt was a pro style offense. Why after 7 years of running this system do you go and recruit an obvious Spread QB? Desperation? It would seem logical that as long as Stafford was at UGA that no quality QB would commit to being a backup for 2-3 years. So did this coaching staff just take a warm body in Gray? I hate to say it about the kid, but his tenure at UGA seems to have been misspent as Rich will have Murray in tow next season, who fits the bill as the prefered QB of choice for Richts offense. Gray would have been better served having gone to Kansas Sate or another mid-level Big12 team. At least he would have been closer to home and perhaps in a better systematic fit.

I will continue to say it….Jones, Miller, and Evans are the worst secondary players UGA has ever had. If they are benched for the rest of the year, we have a chance to win. If not, we will continue to watch wide open receivers scoring easy touchdowns, running backs and quarterbacks running straight past the three stooges, and enough penalties between them to deserve jail time. Of course, on the extremely rare occasion when anyone of them actually makes a decent play (which is why they are supposedly on the field), we will get to see the famous “I’M BAD” strut or “look at me, I’m great at bobbing my head” dance. It is really sad to see this when they have been burned more often than marshmellows at a campfire and your team is losing by three scores or more. For gosh sakes, just make the play and get ready for the next play until the game is over. THEN STRUT IF YOU MUST! CWM should be fired alone for allowing this undisciplined group of players to continue playing. It is a joke! Two weeks to prepare for UF and they drive 80 yards for two quick scores to start the game while UGA’s players backpedal down the field. There is no way to sugarcoat this anymore, UGA’s defense is terrible and continues to get worse because CWM does not have a clue on evaluating talent or deploying effective defensive strategy. Sitting in the stands in Jacksonville, I was 98% effective on describing what UF’s offense was going to do including Tebow’s 30 yard waltz into the end zone while Rashad Jones watched him glide past without a soul blocking him. Any moron knows you put all out pressure (5 or 6 rushing every play) on Tebow and force him to throw quickly, take a sack, or run for his life. UGA only did this during the 3rd quarter when the defense actually stopped UF a couple of times. Why was this not happening from the start? Because CWM decided after two weeks of pregame thinking that we better stay back and see what UF might do instead of taking it to them! Yes, I am tired of watching this situation continue to get worse every year of CWM’s reign as defensive coordinator. If this is not corrected, UGA will lose millions in tickets and donations to the program by next year – and for what? To keep a guy in a position for which he has clearly proven he incapable of performing. Go Dawgs and restore some discipline.

What a bunch of low life people some of you are. These guys are Collegiate players. Most of them will never see a game in any of the professional leagues. Our coach and our AD will make the decisions after the season is over with Coach Martinez and even Coach Bobo. Use your brain and quit acting like a bunch of morons and actually support your team. Props on your enthusiasm, BUT bro you do say the whole “what do UGA and Gt fans have in common” everytime. I have the same passion, win or lose Im a Dawg! BUT There comes a time when you must question certain aspects of our program such as Willie. It doesn’t make you a bad fan to be upset and vent frustrations on these blogs.
That being said, I too believe that you NEVER give up, I am excited for the game tommorrow. 0-8 or 8-0 I love watching UGA play. There just comes a time where you have to say, “I love this team too much to suport Richt’s poor staff, its a crime to be 4-4 with the talent on our team!”.
*I do want staff changes made, but Richt needs to stay around*.

While Cox sucks big time(even worse than Joe T), there is no way in hell I’d put Aaron Murray in there this season behind that p!ss poor offensive line. He’d probably get hurt & miss all or most of next season behind that sorry bunch. Pray for a quick & merciful end to this dreadful season, reload for next year, and get some decent coaches who aren’t afraid to make these BOYS start earning their scholarships.

Seriously, this “mess” was created by CMR keeping Stafford in the game as long as he could walk for the past 2 years. Someone, Cox, whoever
deserved some snaps in 07-08 even if only for mop-up activity. However, I neversaw anyone take a snap last year except Staff. It was like 2009 was never going to occur.

I don’t get it – either the coaches can’t coach or can’t recruit. Uga wins the recruiting wars every year. I recall many leg humper bragging about Cox and Gray and now neither seem to be worth the stars or accolades. What makes you think Murray will be any better?
The vomit eaters are always one recruit from winning it all. However, Georgia is destined to underachieve and I am enjoying this meltdown.

Wow, what is this one about. Now we are bitching becuase the 2nd team QB hasn’t done good in the clean up role. The second team was playing against Fla starters. I saw some Gators say that he wasn’t, but the last time I checked, Spikes was a starter, he intercepted the Logan Gray pass.
As far as the G day game went, I thought Murray looked the best of the four. I thought it was Murray, Gray, Cox, and Metzenberger. Metzenburger seemed to have a rocket arm though.
I hope that Logan gets to play a lot tomorrow. If not, it will be a long, long, time until he does again.

You know what our main two problems are on offense? 1) No offensive line. 2) no tailback who has really stepped up their game. Back in the day. UGA would always have a tailback who would just take tons of handoffs from our mediocre quarterbacks. Where is our running game?
