Should Urban Meyer be suspended? (Associated Press)
Criticism can be unfair, as Mark Richt and Joe Cox are wont to remind us.
A couple of recent examples:
Fans, bloggers and columnists outside of Florida are calling for SEC Commissioner Mike Slive to follow his own recent mandate and suspend Gators coach Urban Meyer for violating the conference rule against coaches publicly criticizing officiating.
Meyer was answering a question from a reporter about footage he sent to the SEC of a late hit delivered by Georgia’s Nick Williams on Tim Tebow in Saturday’s game. The Gators coach said flatly that a penalty should have been called, particularly since the play occurred “right in front of the referee.”
Now that’s mild, especially compared with the comments made by Lane Kiffin, Bobby Petrino and Dan Mullen about poor officiating. But he did call out the referee, which was forbidden recently by Slive, who, in the face of a revolt by conference coaches over the sorry state of SEC officiating, chose to crack down on the critics instead of the officials. He declared that any public criticism of officials by coaches and their staffs would result in the head coach being suspended.
As much as I don’t like Meyer, I have to say that he doesn’t deserve to be suspended any more than those other coaches deserved reprimands. Coaches should be able to speak their minds and criticize blown calls by SEC officials, just like anyone else. And instead of worrying about quashing criticism, Slive should be concerned with the fact that SEC officiating has become a national joke.
But Slive did what he did, and now he’s hoist by his own petard. His pronouncement about suspensions basically took away any latitude he had in a situation like this. If he doesn’t suspend Meyer, it looks like favoritism toward the No. 1-ranked Gators.

Should Dogs stay out of sight after another loss to Gators? (AJC staff)
Closer to home, I was wondering what had prompted the Dogs’ Jeff Owens to tweet that The Red and Black, the student newspaper at UGA, should be called “The Orange and Blue.” It turns out the paper had run a column by online editor Marc McAfee that basically slammed members of the UGA football team for going out bar-hopping Saturday night after their loss to the Gators rather than staying at home in sackcloth and ashes repenting for their sorry play.
“I know they’re college students too. I know they deserve to have fun like I do,” McAfee wrote. “But I haven’t been endowed with the responsibility that comes with signing those papers that make me a part of this storied program in need of an update. Those players chose not to live the life of an average student, and they need to start acting like it.”
Which makes McAfee sound like the old fogey that some folks think I am. Well, in this case I think his criticism of the Dogs going out on the town after their game is pretty lame.
Yes, scholarship football players get an education in exchange for their play, and they do represent the university. But they don’t get paid, despite the school making millions off their efforts, and they spend most of their time being football players. During the season, they get very few opportunities to act like the college students that they also are, so as long as they don’t do anything illegal or otherwise besmirch the reputation of the program (off the field, that is), I have no problem with them hoisting a few after a loss.
I’m sure more than a few fans (students and alums alike) were also out partying Saturday night, and I’d bet most of them were just as upset about Georgia’s loss as the Red and Black columnist.
The difference is they didn’t lose perspective.

Seriously though, with all the players who have gotten in trouble in recent years after a night downtown, maybe they should wait until the season ends to drown their sorrows, at least in public.

There are laws in the United States that disallow censorship. Meyer was asked a question and he answered. He didn’t bring it up. Maybe they should censor your column. What would you say then?

Meyers was right to criticize the cheap shot put on TEBOW. Should have been a personal foul.
SEC officiating at a low point.
UGA got hosed on the celeb call against LSU – and also got hosed on some calls and noncalls against OK STATE.
FLORIDA got very lucky and benefitted on some calls and noncalls against ARKANSAS. Yes – ARKANSAS got hosed.
Agree that SEC and all conferences need to get out of the officating business – and let the NCAA handle it.
Spikes should be suspended for two games – what he did was pure crapola.

Lets see what the SEC Commish does now?? You honestly think he will suspend his favorite coach???? The SEC officials have become the nations biggest joke and the idiot that is in charge is a Tech Alum….figures! As for the players- Jeff Owens and the rest of this so called “team”- you dudes need to man up and show that you at least have a clue before you go lashing out on the rest of us. Coach Richt needs to sit down with his guys and tell them to quit making proclamations to the fans.
Guess what? That is why you are going to college for free. That is why you get all those hot ass girls. This is how it works.
Joe Cox says he does not want to go out to restaurants in town now. Guess what? That is part of it. If he had played well, he would be getting more ass than everyone in Hollywood.
It’s too bad Coach Richt is too stupid to explain to his guys that you cannot beat the media, and you cannot beat your fanbase. We were here 100 years ago and we will be here 100 years from now.

A little fact checking might be in order Bill. The following contains an attributable quote from Slive regarding coaches comments about officiating.
This is the SEC, where the commissioner last week said this: “For the foreseeable future there will be no reprimands. We will go right to suspensions and fines.”
He never said he was going straight to suspension…only that he wasn’t going to bother with reprimands. What Meyer said was fairly benign compared to Kiffin, Petrino and Mullen but there’s no spinning it into anything other than “public criticism of officials”. He’s got to at least fine Urban…otherwise he’s lost whatever credibility he’s got left.

Members of the team going out ‘bar-hopping’? Lucky that a lot of them didn’t get arrested. Many members of the football are under age 21 and with the crack-down on under-age drinking, I’m surprised we didn’t wake up the next morning to a list of names of Dawgs who had been booked in the local pokey. That would have just been more for Richt to deal with in addition to his scooter-riding Dawg without a valid driver’s license.

If the football players at my college (and many of them are 21+) do not go out and have fun at bars, I would be embarassed having them represent me. That IS a big part of the college experience many of us live vicariously thorugh these guys. Holding them to different standards than the other students (outside of practice time and game time) is exactly what has created the entitlement attitude of many players.

Ironically, does anyone really believe Slive would have suspended the officials after the FL/ARK game if Petrino had remainded silent? HIGHLY UNLIKELY. Richt remained silent after the bad call against LSU and you know what happened to the officials involved? Not a damn thing.

UGA Sloberknocker. So Washaun says that Spikes shouldn’t be suspended? Yeah, he is a bigger man than me to probably forgive him, but an idiot as well. I don’t know what Spikes’ fingers were doing between his facemask inside his helmet, but that’s not where they belong. The technical term for that is “facemask” in football and is a 15 yard penalty.
Problem is this. I have a problem with Washaun being nonchalant about this, and acting like it is “just part of the game”. Whether it “goes on all the time” or not, when someone loses an eye b/c of these types of actions, what happens? If Washaun had lost an eye, or had permanent vision problems the rest of his life, I doubt “it goes on all the time” is going to get his eyesight back. “Part of the game” is running, catching, throwing, tackling & blocking. Eye gouging is not required to do any of these things. There is a reason why it’s illegal to chop block, lead with the helmet and have late hits out of bounds, b/c of the risk of permanent injury to a defenseless individual. This is a game of football played for fun, and if you get to a certain level, for a chance at going to college and possibly making money. Few people get this chance, and to have ANYONE feel like they have to do something like eye gouging at the bottom of a pile, that could ruin someone’s chances at a career in football, or for this matter, anything else in life, is completely unacceptable.
You are correct, people did get overworked about this, but it was for the wrong reasons. They hated Spikes, the fact that Fl won, etc. Something ought to be done about it now. It’s kind of like the intersection that doesn’t have a light and wrecks occur there all the time. It seems like they won’t put a light in until a person or two gets killed. Same thing here, we probably won’t see this outlawed until someone loses their eyesight.

If the players WANT to go out drinking after a loss like that during a season like this, that says a lot about what kind of people they are and what kind of program Georgia now has. I’m usually too depressed to go out drinking after a Ga. loss, and it’s not even my fault they lost. With very few exceptions, Ga’s players seem not to care very much or to try very hard. Perhaps it’s a lack of leadership (either by the coaches or among the players), or perhaps it’s the type of people Ga. recruits.

It’s not OK to go out drinking when players have practice the next day. I’ve seen the video of nick williams and he shouldn’t have made the hit. However, I am a firm believer that if a qb hands the ball off and fakes like he still has the ball, you have every right to hit the qb because he may still have the ball. When UGA plays tech I hope they hit nesbitt on every play that he fakes like he has the ball. The only thing about this video that makes it appear bad is that tebow has his head turned watching the rb and nick williams has a clear view of where the ball would be.

Joe,
I absolutely agree. Yeah the football players don’t get paid, but there are a LOT of other perks to being a football player in Athens. I don’t have a problem with these guys going out and having a good time provided things don’t get too out of hand. But when the Dawgs are having the kind of season they are having, and then go out partying after a blowout loss to a rival, it sends the message that they don’t care. And that’s a BAD message to be sending to folks when coaching jobs are on the line.
I think there needs to be a rule amongst the players that if they win, then go downtown and have fun all night. But if they lose, maybe go out to eat and have a few beers with each other(provided they’re of age),
but they stay away from downtown. I don’t think that’s an unfair expectation. Besides it will probably save some of these players from
encountering drunk heckling fans, and keep them out of fights and jail. So that’s my thought on that.
Oh and maybe if Jeff Owens and Michael Moore spent a little less time tweeting and more time making plays against those guys in ” Orange and Blue”, then they wouldn’t have to worry about what was being said about them in some crappy student paper.

Here’s the release from the SEC. It says suspensions AND fines, not suspensions or fines. But, of course, it’s ultimately up to Slive.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 30, 2009) – In a unanimous vote of the Southeastern Conference’s Athletic Directors and with the full support of the Conference’s twelve Presidents and Chancellors, all violations of SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 will be enforced by suspensions and fines, effective immediately.
The length of the suspension and the amount of the fine will be at the discretion of the Commissioner.
SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 requires that coaches, assistant coaches, players, support personnel and others associated with the institution’s athletics program refrain from public criticism of officials.
Head coaches are advised that suspensions and fines for violations of Bylaw 10.5.4 made by assistant coaches or other support personnel will be enforced against the head coach.
“There are proper channels available for head coaches to use when communicating officiating concerns to the Conference office,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive.
As is customary practice, the conference office will continue to address reviews of officiating calls on specific plays with each institution’s head coach and no public comments will be made concerning these communications.

PLEASE suspend Meyer! I Was wondering how Urban would get Florida motivated for Vandy?
Imagine Florida coming out of the South tunnel with its coach suspended and its captain missing the game–Oh Yeah, That will help Vandy.

Valdosta Dawg, IF I were you, I would DETEST Urban Meyer. That would be the ONLY rational emotion to demonstrate toward somebody systematically destroyingwhat you love. Hate Away!! it’s Healthy and ALL you have.

…..so Jeff Owens has determined that due to one writer’s opinion, he now takes it upon himself to rename the student newspaper The Orange and Blue………..apparently Owens has a lot of free time on his hands. I would suggest more film study, mental preparation and concentration on his on field performance………he has been one of the year’s bigger disappointments. Damn good Dawgs let their effort and play do their talking for them……..not tweets illustrating stupid comments.

Party Dawgs. Jailbird Dawgs. Illiterate Dawgs. No-character Dawgs.
These are the kind of moron losers that Richt recruits.
