Just what is the ‘hot seat’ and is Richt on it?

Mark Richt's job is not in jeopardy. (Frederick Breedon IV / Special)

Mark Richt's job is not in jeopardy. (Frederick Breedon IV / Special)

Mark Richt has been heavily criticized during this disappointing season, and rightly so. While he did lose the bulk of last year’s high-powered scoring punch to the NFL, his Dogs have looked undisciplined and poorly coached this year as they’ve let too many penalties and turnovers derail the offense while the defense has resembled something out of the WAC.

Many fans are demanding Richt get rid of coordinators Willie Martinez and Mike Bobo. A few unhinged fans have even called for Richt to be fired on the basis of a 4-4 record two-thirds of the way through the schedule.

Does that mean Richt is on the proverbial hot seat?

Depends on what you think the phrase “hot seat” means. One of the dictionary definitions is “a highly uncomfortable or embarrassing situation.” If that’s what you mean, then Richt’s seat is definitely warm.

But I don’t think that’s what most fans and sports media folks have in mind when they say a coach is on the hot seat. What they’re talking about is his job being in jeopardy.

And if that’s what we’re talking about, Richt is nowhere near the hot seat.

First of all, the idea that Richt could be fired based on one bad season (and another that was a disappointment only in terms of not winning a championship or beating two big rivals) is ludicrous. Georgia athletics director Damon Evans and President Michael Adams are not going to get rid of a coach who has won two SEC championships and has a .768 winning percentage just because of a down year.

Even if this team were to somehow end up with a losing record, which is unlikely, Richt’s job would not be on the line. He would be expected to make changes and, frankly, barring a complete turnaround by the defense and an 8-4 finish, I think that’s going to be the case anyway. In fact, even that might not be enough to save Martinez’s job.

Richt will be given the chance to get the program back on course, based on what Evans said this week when he expressed “the utmost confidence” in Richt’s ability “to lead us in the right direction.”

“I don’t think right now is the time for us to talk about staff changes or anything of that nature,” Evans said. But he added that he knows Richt “will evaluate his program at the end of the season.”

Evans said he is “not going to lose faith” in Richt’s ability to compete successfully with Florida, but he made clear what his expectation is by adding: “We have to compete with that program.”

A mandate for what Rich is expected to do? Yes. But not a threat to get rid of the head coach.

So let’s can all this “hot seat” talk.

lose to Tenn, Fla and Tech next year, and we need a new coach and a new direction. sad, but true.
I hate it, but I don’t think he can do it. New QB, depleted Defensive line, and will this OL be any better next year. Not a single premier RB on the team. What does anyone else see.

A lot obviously depends on how we respond and finish this season. Lose to Auburn and Tech this year I don’t see how he can’t make major changes to his staff… if we somehow beat Tech and Auburn and go to a decent bowl game, then I think a lot of pressure will be off him.

With changes to the staff and improvements in turnover margin and stupid penalties I think he could survive another subpar season next year… but then again it would be hard to imagine any coach at Georgia surviving after losing to Tech 3 years in a row. Win the Tech game this year and he probably buys himself another 2 years to fix this with a shake-up to the staff.

Yes, Coach Richt has had a good record. No, Coach Richt does not have a good record against good teams. Too often his team shows up lacklusterly and suddenly behind by way too many points. Good decisions in preparation and good game time decisions are not being made. That is why we all see penalty after penalty being called on the Bulldogs still. That is why we see inconsistent play calling that does not move the ball downfield. That is why Drew Butler punts the ball too often. That is why A.J. Green is getting killed out there the off target passing of Joe Cox. That is why we have not seen another QB to prepare for next season. Very poor decision making by Coach Richt and his staff.

Coaching, preparation, and game time decision making are at a shambles right now for Coach Richt’s team. Yes, Coach Richt is the head coach, and yes, his decisions or lack of making good decisions about making staff changes definitely put him on the hot seat.

There is too much good talent on this Georgia Bulldog team that is being poorly directed, coached, etc. Martinez is the defensive backfield coach and the Defensive Coordinator. How many more times are we going to see wide open opposing receivers catching another touchdown pass? If Coach Richt does not make the necessary changes to his staff and game calling after this season, then it will be Adios to CMR.

I do not think he has what it takes to consistently beat or compete with the Urban Meyers of the SEC ( 2-7 record against U of F speaks for itself ) – he will make some changes after this year is up but I doubt the sweeping changes that are needed. And we will be having this discussion again in 2 years at which point we will wish we would have gone out and gotten Peterson. You do not pat teenagers on the back and say “you’ll do better next time” when they make major game changing mistakes time after time and expect them to change – is that how Saban and Meyer handle their players? Without disipline/punishment/? a little fear/respect, there will be minimal results – I refer you to our dismal ranking with penalties x 2 years. It is doubtful Richt will change his character or MO. Unfortunately the bar has been raised and I hope he can respond appropriately.

As a lifelong UGA fan and alum, I, along with every TRUE fan are not surprised by where this program is at right now. This has been in development since last season. We will tell you that we are not a good football team from any standpoint, so all of you ______ (name your team) fans can stop w/ your “we’re better and you suck” posts.

It disgusts me to see what this UGA program has regressed to. I took pride in the year’s of the Junkyard Dawgs and agonized through the Goff years and it makes me sick to see the urban thuggery that is portrayed from the time this team struts onto the field. Undisciplined action that all goes back to our coaches and ultimately, Coach Richt. Instead of the gimmicky uniforms we should wear the traditional silver pants, red jerseys and red helmets that have exemplified our program and instead of Soulja Boy blasting through the P.A., traditional UGA fight songs should be firing up the players and the faithful. I’m not a prude either, I’m talking about getting back what exemplifies UGA football.
Believe me, if Van Gorder was D.C. and one of his players pulled a move such as the out of bounds facemask that Gamble pulled in the UF game, his a.. would have watched the game from the locker room in street clothes. And the chest thumping after making a play during a losing effort would have him running stadiums until he puked.
If your team needs to bust out a helmet has never been worn in UGA history to provide motivation against the UF, then it clearly falls on your coach’s lack of confidence in his preparation for the game.

I do believe that Richt knows what changes will have to be made and will make the appropriate decisions. My brother made the comment that Richt “looked tired and confused” lately. I think that he is doing alot of soul seraching.

A hot seat is when you are in danger of being fired. CMR is not in danger of being fired. And JB, I see a mediocre QB behind a mediocre O line. I see a couple of good backs and I see the need for a receiver or two to step up. I see sub par play from the safeties and a lack of a pass rush from the D ends. And I also see the team I’ll cheer for until they bury me, that is what I see

Wasn’t Richt supposed to “evaluate the program top to bottom” last year? What happened to that idea? Oh, that’s right. The assistant coaches all got raises. Glad I don’t own stock in that company. Tville Dawg, I would be shocked if Chris Peterson would ever come to Georgia. He has already turned down interviews from Washington and Mississppi State (I believe Georgia is a better job than both of those schools).. but he seems very comfortable in Boise, is very cautious about uprooting his family and does not seem to be driven by $$.

I think his real ambition is to continue to build Boise St. into a major player in College Football.. as long as he feels Boise St. is moving up then I think he stays put. If Boise St. gets invited to join the Mountain West after this year then I see him staying put long term… if they continue to flounder in the WAC due to conference strength, then he might inticed leave.

One Season? this is NOT about ONE season.

UGA ‘06 was a train wreck much as this year, full of mistakes penalties and turnovers, ‘08 was full of arrests, ‘07 was blown with poor play calling on offense.

‘09 is a continued trend of the ‘05 Sugar Bowl forward, no changes in the staff have been made by choice.

UGA fans hear improvements are being made but the team is 119th in turnovers and 119th in penalties.

UGA football ‘06 forward looks like Tennessee from ‘01 until Fulmer was fired. Promote from within and very few adjustments. You may get 10 wins but don’t win the big ones.

Ealey looks to have a spark and what happens? Caleb gets the start. If other RBs were healthy Moreno would have never made it to the level he did and UGA along with it.

UGA needs a spark does the staff come up with a new game plan? No new Helmets and Pants Brilliant!!!!

Bobo has a weapon in the open field with Thomas. What does he do try to get him in space with some motion, lining up in the slot, 2 back set? No he benches him because he isn’t big enough to block or bust runs through the line of scrimmage.

UF and Miami fired Zook and Coker for much less.

Miami had Shannon on the hotseat before this year. He made changes and looks to be headed in the right direction. What changes have been made in Athens?

I don’t expect the SECCG every year but leading the country in penalties and turnovers is not acceptable

Otto, I feel the same. As a Gator fan, I’d like to win every game, and in good years, aka the Tebow years, I expect us to. But normally, I’d like us to beat our rivals and to only lose to good teams, I can handle losses if we are competitive. To show the lack of emotion and not shake things up as the dawgs are doing, I would be concerned too. Richt needs to be careful, he won’t be fired this year, but if he keeps it up and doesn’t make changes, next year or the year after, he could be gone.

Relax...

Bulldog Nation,

Relax…

The Dogs will be fine. Every great coach has had down years. It just so happens that Coach Richt is having one this year.

Take Bear Bryant for example. He faced such crossroads in 1969 and ‘70 when he had back-to-back teams that only won six games. People started saying Bryant was too old and that the game had passed him by. Then, in 1971, Alabama went on an 11-year run where the Crimson Tide won 116 games, nine SEC championships and three national championships. I’m not saying Coach Richt is up there with the Bear, but the fact is that Coach Richt is a damn good coach that will in deed turn things around.

Think about Vince Dooley. In 1974, Vince Dooley’s defense was so bad that he actually told some friends that he would get out of coaching if he couldn’t get it turned around soon. Coach Dooley made some adjustments and Georgia went to the Cotton Bowl in 1975 and won the SEC championship in 1976. And you know what happened in the early 80s.

Coach Richt has attained an 86-26 record while at Georgia, a .768 winning percentage (the best winning percentage in Georgia football history). Vince Dooley was 201-77-10 as UGA coach, a .715 winning percentage. Under Richt, the Dogs have averaged 10 wins a year and have won the SEC twice, and [Georgia] hadn’t won an SEC championship in the 20 years prior. So it’s not like the Bulldogs and Coach Richt have just been floundering around for several years.

The football program is in good hands under Coach Richt, so just relax. I have tremendous faith in Mark Richt and I have faith in his staff. Believe me, he will turn things around. Just be a fan that supports the Dogs instead of tearing them down. Real fans support their teams in good and bad years. So once again, just RELAX and let this great coach do his job. Stop talking about all the negative crap and just enjoy the rest of the season.

BJohnDawg

If we had Richt emulate a program, all he has to do is look West to Bama or south to Florida.

Dawg fans, say what you will. But those are two good programs, coaching and players top to bottom. And that is what Georgia fans should expect.

Not that your team wins every game. But that your players are competitive, always in the game, and left everything on the field.

There is always a losing team in any contest. But if you can leave it all on the field, you have no regrets. Do we really think the DAWGS left it all on the field in Knoxville, or Stillwater, or Jacksonville.
Watching those games I would say “NO Way.”

This program is way to loosey, goosey. Devil may care.
Even statements from Richt like ” The ball seems to be going to the other team, they are getting all the loose balls, hey thats football.” Hey that is BS. Top teams force and recover the TOs. They get the interceptions, they get the sacks. And ….THEY DO NOT TURN THE BALL OVER OR HAVE HUGE NUMBER OF PENALTIES. Those are the facts.

Good programs improve on areas that are a problem the year before.
Did we get sacks last year? NO. Are we getting them this year? NO
Did we have turnovers last year? Yes. Are we turning it over this year less? NO
Did we get inteceptions last year ? Few. Are we getting them this year? No, fewer.
Did we have a ton of penalties last year? Heck yeah. Are we getting less penalties this year? No, we are getting more.
Did we cover kick well last year? No. Are we covering kicks better this year? NO
I could go on.But I am tired of typing and need a drink.

Moral to this story? It’s time to make some changes.

Gator Fan, thanks I agree and you added on to more of what I feel.

I like CMR as a person and was a big fan. I did not expect a title last year, just being reasonable the lines were not the same and then injuries. It was how they were lost with arrests, bad tackling, lack of adjustments and creativity on both sides of the ball. Over the past few seasons and watching many decisions you have to question is the program doing what it takes? CMR has to make those decisions.

I do think if CWM stays DC and gets blown out in 2 of 3 against Tenn, Aub, and Florida he could very well be fired.
