Georgia's best chance is to see that A.J. Green touches the ball as often as possible Saturday. (Associated Press)
Conventional wisdom in the college football world is that a bye week before a game, especially when your opponent doesn’t have one, gives you an advantage.
In fact, what little chance Georgia is given to win this year’s battle with Florida in Jacksonville generally is deemed to hinge on how successful the Dogs were in making use of their extra week of preparation.
Georgia is 11-3 under Mark Richt following an open date, including 1-0 when it comes before the Florida game thanks to 2007, when the No. 20 Dogs upset No. 9 Florida 42-30.
As has been noted with frustration by Dogs fans in recent years, a bye week is something of a rarity for Georgia in this series. This will be only the sixth time in the history of Georgia-Florida that the Dogs come into the game after a week off. UGA is 3-2 in those games. In contrast, Florida has had a bye week before facing the Dogs 18 times (including 13 of the past 16 years) with a record of 14-4 against the Dogs when they’ve had a week off.
But as UGA football historian Patrick Garbin details, the importance of a bye week is probably overstated, at least in Georgia’s case. Since 1980 in games following an open Saturday Georgia has a 39-17-2 record for a winning percentage of .690. Meanwhile, over the same period the Bulldogs have an overall record of 255-99-5, which works out to a winning percentage of .717 — slightly better than for bye weeks.
Garbin also notes that of Georgia’s 58 games after bye weeks, the Dogs were favored to win 74 percent of the games but were victorious in just 69 percent of them.
And a bye week before the Georgia Tech game last year certainly didn’t seem to help Willie Martinez figure out how to handle the triple option.
Still, Richt’s record after an open week is impressive overall, and you’d certainly rather be off when the other guy isn’t than vice versa. Georgia only practiced twice during its week off, but the coaches worked every day but one, when they had to take a state-mandated furlough. Let’s hope they put that time to good use scheming how to keep the pressure on Florida in the red zone, establish some semblance of a running game for the Dogs and get the ball into A.J. Green’s hands as frequently as possible.
Bottom line, though, is always the same against the Gators: Stop Tebow. And, yes, it’s much easier said than done.
What do you think, will the bye week be much of a factor? Or do the Dogs need a miracle to pull this one out?

Yes, and then some. The Dawgs will probably keep it closer than the experts think, but they are not winning. Unless they recently learned how to tackle and unless Willie Martinez recently grew a brain.

It’s great that they had a Bye week, but I don’t think they did much with it so it isn’t going to prove to be much of a benefit. We’ll probably lose the game, but I hope the Dawgs can stop Tebow from scoring a rushing touchdown against them….hopefully they can postpone it one more week and then he’ll score it against somebody else!

Bill,
The buildup to this game reminds me of Georgia going into Auburn in 2006. Georgia was reeling, Mark Richt had supposed lost “it,” Auburn was a top 5 team, and Georgia was given no shot to win. Then Georgia went in there and blew Auburn out. Same scenario here. I am not saying that Georgia will blow out Florida, but Richt does his best coaching when Georgia’s back is to the wall, and he and Georgia are being called out.
I smell an upset in the making here.

I can understand why fans could be in awe of Fl and Bama ranked number 1 and 2 because supposedly geniuses that have the inside on sports see it and vote that way..but why do you local sportswriters agree? Look at both of their schedules. Fl played Troy, Charleston Southern and will play FIU, and big deal win over Ms St. Bama played FIU, North Texas and upcoming Chattanooga. The two teams do not even play each other in regular season. Who are the sissys of these athletic departments tha sets up these opponents? At least, UGA had the guts to play Oklahoma State. I can see one Div 1A school for everyone to play as your mulligan, but 3 of them? And you expect me to crown you number one? PLAY SOMEBODY.. What a crock of manure

Richt’s winning percentage in after-bye week games is 11-3, which is a 79% winning rate.
Richt’s overall record at UGA (before this season, which I would say is the abnormality) is, suprise, 79%.
That means that Richt’s bye week record is no different than his normal one (not to say that winning almost 80% of your games isn’t impressive)
The premise of Richt being an impressive bye week coach is somewhat misguided. On average, he wins the same amount, bye week or no (this year being the exception…)
Make fun of me for being a Tech guy and happening to work out some math on the blog if you want. I just don’t like wrong information!

I am praying for divine intervention. If all the Gators busses broke down ten blocks from the stadium, we win big.
If we do as Joe Cox said and try to establish the run first, we lose. The worse rushing offense going against the best rushing defense is a pipe dream. I am hoping Joe said that to throw off the Gators and we open with a bomb to AJ.
I am hoping for a change in the outcome of the game and a future without St. Tim but Brantley is more than capapble of running the Gator offense.

UGA this year loses to an average Florida team ( still # 1) and we, um yes, I am a UGA man, lose as usual. Until we get some kick ass coaches, incl Richt, we will be 8-4 or 7-4 or like this year …………..6-6.
Our recruiting has been vastly over rated with speedy kids but no hulks for the line and no really big time running backs and no big time line backers and no big time safeties. See #3 and that pathetic #9.
This year is blown already and it will really get ugly with KY, Auburn and tech upcoming. Maybe, oh maybe THAT FACT will get the entire staff at UGA FIRED. We are looking to 2011 now. 2010 will be a true rebuilding year and a break thru year in 2010 with new coaches could be a 8-3 or 9-3 type of season. With the same UGA coachinh staff? Another 6-6 year will result …………THEN Adams will have to fire all of them. I say do it the day after the tech game.
Go Dogs.

Minnesota Dawg – I just listened to 680 the Fan, and I guess they carry the UGA games now? Heck, I can hardly get them in Marietta.
John Kincaid says the 15 point spread is a “sucker bet”, since Florida wouldn’t have coverd that against Arkansas, Miss. State or UT. He says Vegas money expects a Florida blowout.
Of course, Buck begs to differ. He talked to Joe Cox, and Cox says Bobo has a really good plan.

Minnesota Dawg – Ya gotta ignore most of these Tech posters. I wait until game day to hoot ‘n holler. That’s what it’s all about.

Delbert…so Cox feels good about Bobo’s plan huh? That’s a relief.
At least we aren’t going in with no plan at all…wait I think maybe no plan at all would have been better than all the previous plans, which haven’t fooled may defensive coordinators.
I also hope his good feeling isn’t based on it working against Willie’s D!!

“UGA will get blown out tomorrow. There will be no running game so Cox must pass we know what happens when he must win games.” Joe Cox helped win at least two games where he had to play outstanding football for the Dawgs to win, USC and Ark. In fact, he had one of the greatest games in UGA history against Arkansas.
I’m not going to try to predict how he will do against the Gators defense, but don’t assume that he can’t get the job done.

hard to say. i just hope UGA can play a full 60 minute game with no bonehead mistakes. that’s what it will take. thank goodness those idiot refs that worked the UGA/LSU game are suspended after they stole that game from Arkansas! sure does seem like the refs don’t want timmie boy to lose.

Dawgs73,
If only you could see yourself as others see you, you would get what a drag you are (to paraphrase Bob Dylan). What’s sad is if Georgia wins the game with Florida, you’ll see that as a setback in the “war” to fire our coaches.

Usually for Halloween, I rent some horror flicks. This year I’ll just watch the game, it should produce as many nightmares as any DVD could.
What’s acceptable? It’s not losing to the Gators by several touchdowns, that’s for sure. I don’t believe in moral victories, they’re for losers. So “acceptable” means winning today and sending the Gators home crying.

If Richt and Bobo don’t start mixing it up more and trusting their QB to throw, this is going to be a slaughter.
