Can we call a timeout on cheap motivational ploys? (Associated Press)
The dueling insults story is easily the most predictable aspect of coverage this week leading up to Saturday’s Georgia-Florida game.
Mark Richt thought his 2007 team was flat, so he challenged them to get an excessive celebration penalty after their first score against the Gators that year. The whole team danced in the end zone and Georgia went on to win the game. The special attention SEC officials have given the Dogs since then has made some question Richt’s move, but at the time many hailed it as a great motivational ploy.
Urban Meyer didn’t think so. He told the world that it was a “bad deal” and would be “forever in the mind of Urban Meyer” (why is it humorless prigs always like to refer to themselves in the third person?). So he used it as a motivational tool all during the offseason, and in 2008 his Gators took it out on the Dogs.
That wasn’t enough for Meyer, of course, so he childishly extended the game with a couple of unnecessary timeouts, just to rub some salt in the wound and thumb his nose at Richt.
And nobody is surprised to read that Georgia has pictures of Meyer calling timeout and the score of last year’s game posted in its locker room and weight room.
A.J. Green says the pictures are “motivation for me” because the timeouts were “a sign of disrespect. So I’m going to play my heart out.”
Meanwhile, the Gators are still trying to milk some motivation out of the 2007 dance, with defensive tackle Terron Sanders telling the Orlando Sentinel it was “a sign of disrespect” and “a slap in the face. We can’t just let it be a one-year thing where we feel like we took care of it. We always have to look back at it as disrespect.”
What’s ridiculous is that programs of the caliber of Georgia and Florida need to look for signs of “disrespect” and motivational gimmicks in order to get their players up for the annual showdown in Jacksonville.
Why is all this posturing and bulletin-board stuff necessary? Would A.J. not play his heart out if the Gators hadn’t disrespected the Dogs last year? Of course, not. He plays his heart out every week.
But especially in a game like this, that should be the norm for all the players on both sides.
As Richt said in his Tuesday press briefing, “I don’t think this game needs anything extra from the past to get anybody excited to play.” If anyone on either team doesn’t “respect” the other program, you have to question whether they even belong on the field.
After all, this is Georgia-Florida, a storied rivalry. The crowd is split 50/50 so the noise is almost constant. In most years, the game decides the SEC East. The two programs battle over the same recruits in each other’s territory. That ought to be enough to get the players pumped to the max for this game without the coaches having to resort to the old “remember what they did last year” bit or on-field stunts or cheap-shot attempts at showing up the other team.
It’s the Dogs and Gators, so shut up and play!

I would love to see us beat Florida, but I expect Tebow to (1.) catch us blitzing and hit that safety valve receiver over the middle just about every time, and (2.) run that “hesitation draw play” a lot and catch our soft “up the middle” defense napping in just about every key situation. It’s happened all year both this year and last…and, frankly, I see no signs that Georgia is making any adjustments to stop it.
If you need any of those little sissy ass tricks…deliberate penalties, “blacking out” the damn stadium, etc….to get up for playing Florida, Alabama, or anybody in the conference, really…you shouldn’t be playing at Georgia. (Or anywhere else in the SEC.) I wish Coach Richt would take all his “gimmicks” and cram ‘em up his tailpipe. I’m tired of seeing Georgia acting like that FSU scum.

It pains me as a long time supporter of the Dawgs for our program to fall so far below Florida and Alabama. Why we lay an egg vs Tennessee lately is beyond me. And now Tech is kicking ass. It makes me want to puke.
As Pat Dye put it “Georgia ia not man enough to whip Florida”. The coaching staff has turned some excellent recruits into pu$$ies. Where are the warriors? Where is the coaching that exploits weakensses? Where are the adjustments that keep you in the game. I bet Tebow runs the naked bootleg all day on us.
I have always been a Mark Richt supporter and defender but I grow weary of our program slipping into medeocrity and he has said or done nothing lately to assuage my anxiety. I just want us to show up and make it a real game. Then I can respect myself on Sunday morning.

If Willie comes out in his traditional 4-3 defense with zone coverage in the DB area Fla. will kill us. Several things Willie needs to do: show some 5 and 6 man fronts, use stunts up front to confuse the Fla. blocking assignments, use corner blitzes, throw in an occasional saftey blitz, use linebacker blitzes on a regular basis, have the corners man-up more than playing 8 to 10 yds. off of the receivers, finally decide who is going to cover the tight end and lock up on him.
I have just given Willie his defensive game plan. I am no wizard, this is the plan that was deployed be Ark. and Miss. State. Ark. should have won their game. You must put constant heat on Tebow (Ark. sacked him 6 times). Does Ark and Miss. State have better athletes on defense than UGA? NO WAY!! Do they have better defensive coaching? We will find out on Sat. Willie has had extra time to prepare, we will see. If you see us in our traditional defense we will be destroyed dy Fla.
I hope Bobo has some great offensive plans, I would like to see something more creative from him. Hopefully Cox will make the throws we need, and the OL will find a way to run block, we don’t have bad backs we have terrible run blocking, (I thought our OL was supposed to be our greatest strength on offense this season), what happened? Just loosing Sturdivant didn’t cause the problem. I know Moreno is gone but he had holes to run into last year that have not shown up this year. My goodness, when you can’t run against Vandy you have a major problem. We need to throw the ball well to set up the run, just the opposite of most teams.
I hope we can win, this is my 40th straight Ga-Fla. game in which I will be in attendance. Pleae dawgs, let’s see some of that old “junk-yard-dawg” football we all love. Get after them gators on both sides of the ball.

If anyone knows our frustration against florida the last twenty or so years it should be Tech. I mean we have dominated them as florida has us. The contrast is erie, We have had 2 seven game win streaks against them 1991-1997 and 2001-2007. Florida has had two 7 game streaks against us, 1990-1996 and 1997-2003. So that is why the techies are on here gloating after a measley 3 point victory last year. I must admitt though, if we beat florida im gonna be doing the same thing.

Ha! “In most years, the game decides the SEC East.”
That’s one way of looking at it. Since the SEC went divisional, Florida has won the East nine times and Georgia’s won it three, in ‘02, ‘03 and ‘05. Florida beat Georgia in ‘03 and ‘05.
So I guess what you meant to say was this: “When Florida wins, they usually win the East. Sometimes Georgia wins and Tennessee wins the East as a result. One time Georgia beat Florida and won the East in the same season.”
Note: I’m not counting “split championships” in the East, because only one team goes to Atlanta.

Pictures of the Timeouts in the locker room? Ok, Gators have a big painting that Meyer only brings out for this week of the end zone celebration. They put in in the locker room, they bring it to practice, and they bring it to all team meetings. The Gators are angry considering most of these guys witnessed that first-hand. They have not forgotten, they are looking for more payback. The defense have made a pact for this game that they have not done all season, NO Touchdowns Allowed. Complete domination for 4 Quarters of football. This is one unit that doesn’t need any added motivation.

Alright, enough! This “revenge” talk needs to stop. “Revenge” is such a lousy form of motivation anyway. I mean if you can’t get up to play your rival in a nationally televised game with National Title implications for at least one team, then you shouldn’t be playing division I football.
The only people that really care about this “revenge” factor are the media and the fans. I can almost gurantee you that the players don’t care. And even if they do, it’s only going to give them a little bit of juice for like a quarter. After that, it comes down to fundamentals and game plans. The team that is better prepared wins. Period! Fans on both sides can whine about endzone dances and timeouts, but the bottom line is that UGA won in 2007 because they were better prepared and outplayed Florida, and vice virsa for the Gators in 2008. As a Bulldog fan: the endzone dance was fun, and Florida got their “revenge” the next year. So let’s just get excited about another SEC battle, and leave the BS out of it this year.

The simple fact and major differences in what UGA did and what Urban Meyer did was this…UGA motivated themselves and entire team by celebrating a touchdown, Urban Meyer simply was being an a$$hole and Prik (and a baby) by calling timeouts toward the end of the game to prolong the inevitable. That is poor poor poor sportsmanship.

You jealous fool.
Maybe if your team didn’t get their tails kicked all over the field Meyer never would have had the chance to call those timeouts.

Jason, the stupid dance could have really caused problems if it had caused a brawl on the field and then your gutless coach pretended in his press conference that he hadn’t approved it. I guess he didn’t know that the CBS cameras caught him laughing while it was happening. UGA’s problem is they are still living in the past (Hershel Tebow debate) and will never be consistantly successful until the fire CMR and the whole coaching staff. But as a Gator I hope he spends his whole career at UGA.

Bill King proves he’s too old to understand the modern athlete again.
Every game in the SEC is a rivalry to the players, they have to look for an edge anywhere they can. They could care less how the fans feel about particular opponents. The edge the players get from feeling personally disrespected provides 100X more motivation than saying “well its Florida” to any athlete today.
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Mr. King has never played sports or even really interacted openly with those who have.

last year’s game wasn’t even fitting enough “revenge”…to me, the only thing that would have been perfect was if when they reviewed the play, that knowshon would have been deemed to have NOT crossed the line, and then it would have been 3rd and goal from the 31 yd line.

HA! Florida as a weak schedule? And why is that? Could it be that Georgia is on it? It used to mean something to beat Georgia and Tennessee, but we’ve done it so much, so badly, that both schools are mired in mediocrity! And Florida State used to be good, too, but now all the talent in the state comes to UF!
We win so much that it makes the teams on our schedule go bad.

We can beat florduh if we do 3 things 1. get bryan evans off the field 2. get pressure from the front four 3. Don’t allow hernandez to get open less than 50 yards recieving from him and acomplish the other goals and we have a legitimite shot. I want to say one other thing I don”t normally criticize players but I haven’t seen Bryan Evans do anything since he laid that big hit on dez bryant in the first game except get beat. I respect all of the athletes at the UGA because they are phenominal athletes but there comes a time when they get lazy or there are just better players behind them without the experience, and experience isn’t alaways a reason you should start.

Speaking of the team with the highest arrest number this off season….Wasn’t it Urban Meyer who picked and choosed what games Jarvis Moss missed due to several drug test violations? Luckily Jarvis was suspended for the game after SC so he was able to “get high” and block the winning field goal. Wasn’t Urban who kicked a player off the team for a serious offense but then decided to let the players decide if he was allowed back when he ran a little thein at that position. Didn’t Teabow’s roommate get a break last year after breaking into a impound lot to “retrieve’ his girlfriend’s car? I guess if Teabow gets arrested for drivin a scooter on the sidewalk or not paying speeding tickets he won’t play Saturday either….Right!!!!

What we long time UGA fans have to face is the fact that Florida wins year after year is not because they have superior players (except for this year), but that UGA is out coached…first by Spurrier and now by Urban Cryer. Florida fans have, of course, been happy to have two of the sorriest pricks in the history of NCAA football coaching them with those kind of results. A pox on Spurrier and Myer, not because they are great coaches and beat us regularly, but because they are such miserable scumbags.

I’ve been a Dawg fan forever, but one of things a real fan has to do at times is admit when your team isn’t cutting it. At this time we’re too bad, FL’s D is too good, and the refs will flag anyone that so much as breathes in Tebow’s general direction.

You scratch out 2 tickets, get him a driver and let him go! There are 14 reasons you must get a bond posted regarding traffic stops, and those 2 are not on the list. UGA campus police have always had a chip on their respective shoulders. During my Athens tenure, there were many examples such as the one you cite. I have spoken with several officer friends here and texas, they ALL said they would never arrest anyone under those two circumstances (unless they had outstanding warrants). Sitations would be given and then they could either call a cab or someone to pick them up. In some cases they would be allowed to continue on anyway. After reading what Vince was arrested for i laughed, surely the campus cops or athens cops have better ways to spend taxpayers money than that. I would assume then that Athens has no crime rate at all. For the people saying “soft Richt” or “ST Richt” gives him a slap on the wrist…..that is more than i would do. But i do question why Vance has only a learners permit at age 22??. Tebow aint gonna lose to a defense that still doesn’t know how to tackle. Richt better have some new gimmicks. maybe people skipping across the cross bars or walking the camera wire.

Oh for crying out loud…. some of you blind homers think Richt is the only person that can coach UGA. He cant win the big ones! He is the worse game day coach in the nation. Gators will find their offense this weekend. In the long run it will open more eyes of the blind homers out there!

SonOfBear, you are correct! There IS a lot of parity but it seems that buying referees instead of Trans Ams has paid off handsomely for some teams. If you’re a ‘Bama fan then I have no beef with you as I like to watch their defense kick some serious booty. Let’s hope the Tide can kick the Gators’ behinds but good if in fact the SECCG makes it happen.

I don’t think UF has to buy the refs. I think the SEC takes care of that. Protect the top two teams and get two into BCS bowls. Much more conference money.

Let’s cut to the chase here. The magic won’t happen for the Dawgs until Richt is replaced with a Meyer~Miles~Sabin. It’s like professional football – the best coaches go where the money is. For enough $$$$, we can have any of those coaches. It’s that simple, really. Sack Richt and buy a winning coach.
I’m tired of suffering through this every year and being eliminated from any chance of winning the SEC by mid-season. Now… let’s all get together and make our voices count.
We can be winners again, it just takes the right coach.

We can pay Paul Johnson more than the $2.5 Tech is giving him. He is obviously a winner. He embarrassed Richt last year with a team predicted to win 3 games. It’s weird to us…he overachieves instead of underachieving

I hope tech plays a 2 loss Florida in a BCS bowl (w/ Alabama playing for BCS champ). Both teams run their QB all the time taking advantage of an extra blocker.
Maybe a bowl beat down like the one they got last year will humble the tech fan base.
They mock us for being frustrated because we are not better…and nobody is doing anything about it.
Tech fans are as bad as Florida fans these days. At least Florida has won something.

There are few things more ironic than Gator fans coming on a Dawg blog lecturing UGA fans about a lack of class. Florida fans (with some exceptions) and it’s head coaches are the quintessential representation of lack of class. It seemed to have reached the nadir during the Spurrier years, when he single handledly became the most hated man in the entire SEC among ALL of the other teams. Until Urban Meyer set a new low last year with his two timeouts in victory over the Dawgs. Of course Mark Richt made a mistake the year before with the endzone celebration, but he never had any intention of insulting Florida and he both admitted his mistake and sincerely apologized to all that he had offended. Meyer DELIBERATELY CHOSE to rub it in Georgia’s face. He was not MAN enough or decent enough to win in style and let the victory speak for itself. But it was no surprise; he, like the University he represents, is TRASH and will NEVER have ANY CLASS. He could win more championships than any coach who ever lived but he will never have my respect with that approach. He may kiss Tebow’s rear but he obviously hasn’t learned anything about what Tebow promotes off the field.

uuugh… Tech has won something as well (45 – 42). Florida fans have two out of the last three BCS NCs to revel in. Perhaps that is why they are “bad”. As far as Tech, they are mocking you because Georgia has much better talent, but yet performs much worse on the field. Tech does not have, and will not try to recruit blue chip athletes. AJC reported last year that Tech’s football team has the highest SAT scores of any public university. What does that tell you about what they are trying to build? No wonder they are giddy about the prospects of beating Georgia again this year. It’s like the smart kid in class beating up the class bully at recess.
I am looking forward to Saturday. Are you?

LSU (8-5) – 33 points
#14 Georgia Tech (9-4) – 3 points
*The power difference between the ACC’s top teams and the SEC’s top teams is very clear. 9 out of 10 times I’d take LSU/Florida/Alabama over Georgia Tech

If these guys can’t get up for this game with all that has happened over the last couple of years in this rivaly (series really..because we have done squat) then we are in deep trouble for the game and the rest of the season.
I jump back and forth from being patient to extreme, but right now I feel like if we do not have a new D-coordinator next year, then CMR has drawn his line in the sand (friendships/relationships more important than UGA football/what the numbers say) and put his own job on the line. There are plenty of good people out there and I am sure he could convince one of them to relocate to Athens.

I’m tired of Richt and all the undelivered promises and all the excuses. Beginning in January last, Richt promised that we were working on reducing penalties and turnovers. PROMISES, PROMISES, PROMISES.
Richt is a first class guy, so we’re told, and I respect that. He’s far from a first class coach. And I don’t respect that. The fall began with the 2005 season especially the WVA Sugar Bowl game where we gave up 38 points! THIRTY-EIGHT POINTS! Never beat Florida and won the SEC E in the same year! Alabama leads at the half 31-0. Florida destroys us 49-10 last year. We lose to Tech in Athens although we are leading by 18 points in the third quarter. IF Y’ALL LIKE THAT, THEN YOU CAN HAVE IT. IS THAT WHAT YOU’RE DEFENDING.
I DON’T LIKE IT, I HATE IT. Talk all about the great w/l record. We ain’t won the big one and haven’t even gotten to the final two in 8 plus seasons. While Miles, Saban and Meyer have all won national championships in half the seasons that Richt has been coaching at Georgia. You like that? I HATE IT. YOU LIKE THAT, THEN YOU KEEP ON LOSING UNTIL THE BODY IS BLED DRY.
This will be the fourth successive year that we will not represent the East in Atlanta. Next year is likely to be the same unless the QB is a phenom like the one at USC in Los Angeles. We’re in triple digits in several categories. I submit that those categories go hand-in-hand with defining a bad team. DEAL WITH IT, WE’RE A BAD TEAM WITH AMATEURS COACHING WHO CONTINUE TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. WITH A HEAD COACH WHO HAS DONE NOT VERY MUCH TO CHANGE HIS STAFF SINCE 2005 EVEN THOUGH EACH SEASON IS WORSE THAN ITS PREDECESSOR. WAKE UP! WAKE UP!
The only way to get rid of this joke of a coaching staff, including CMR, is for them to lose Saturday to Florida and then to Tech. I’m a long, long time Georgia fan, a two-time UGA graduate, a native of Athens, a top notch recruiter for the DAWGS when that was legal years ago. I bleed Red and Black and take no second seat to ANYONE in that regard.
Saban has changed DCs and OCs twice in the two plus years he’s been at BAMA. They’ve not lost a game this year. Us? We win against ASU as the clock expires. ASU? Yep, a second tier PAC 10 team. You know the answer.
We need to lose to get rid of the slop. It hurts me deeply to say this: Go Gators, Go Tech. Go STAFF!!!!!! IF YOU THINK THAT IS DISLOYAL, THEN MAKE THE MOST OF IT! If that’s disloyalty which some of you think of it as, then ride the ship down with CMR because going down it is. See any signs this year of the ship not going down? Please, if you do, tell me what they are.
I want US to resume our rightful place in college football not to be embarrassed time and again on national TV giving up 30 or more points. EXIT RICHT AND COACHING STAFF.
CMR is a stubborn, bull-headed coach, loathe to make changes, loathe to give up play calling (he stll calls most of the plays is my bet) loathe to bring in coaches that might outshine him. He is an unmitigated disaster. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE AND THE TIME IS NOW (AFTER THE SEASON, OF COURSE). GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS. From a man that hates what is happening with UGA football.
AND IN YOUR HEARTS YOU KNOW I’M RIGHT!

This blog is nastier than I have ever seen.
To Dawg fans:
Chill out! Just ignore all the bs and talk your game. I don’t, for the life of me, know why you pups always get so riled up and angry? You’re having a tough year. It happens (trust me, I’m a Tech fan … we know about tough years). It’s to be expected. Richt has been great for the past 7 years. He needs to make some adjustments, and he will. Next year will be better. Just calm it down, will ya?

Another player arrested yesterday. That’s the problem, half our goon players are wearing those heavy ankle monitors they put on parolees! And Richt doesn’t think the arrest records have anything to do with what happens on the field.

I also think the folks who bash Richt but then talk good about him in the same breath need to find out where they stand…..quit talking out of both sides of your mouth man ! Hate to act like Rome but say what you mean and leave it ! That said,I think Richt still has the hunger in his belly to win a championship ! When i feel like it’s done i will tell you and there will not be a “BUT” that ends the conversation.
