Robert Edwards (Associated Press)
One of Georgia fans’ favorite Bulldog wins over the Gators has to be the 37-17 decision in 1997.
The game had a Georgia back, Robert Edwards, running for 124 yards and four touchdowns. It saw Hines Ward accounting for 203 total yards, with seven receptions for 85 yards, five rushes for 21 yards, two pass completions for 27 yards and two kickoff returns for 70 yards. It broke a seven-game Florida winning streak and was the Gators’ worst regular season loss in five years.
Plus, it was a win over Steve Spurrier in his prime.
Despite QB Mike Bobo throwing three picks that day, Georgia racked up 434 yards of offense (287 through the air). The Dogs took a 14-3 lead into halftime thanks to two of Edwards’ touchdowns. Florida, which used three quarterbacks in that game (Doug Johnson, Noah Brindise and Jesse Palmer) came back to grab a 17-14 lead in the third quarter, but it was all Georgia from that point on, with the Dogs scoring 23 unanswered points, including a beautiful 37-yard Edwards scamper down the left sideline that lingers in the memory as one of the high points of UGA football in the 1990s.
The Dogs’ defense did its job that day, too. Florida entered the game averaging 440 yards of offense but was limited to 327 total yards as the Dogs snagged four interceptions — two by Kirby Smart, now Alabama’s defensive coordinator. It was the worst defeat for the Gators since their 62-24 drubbing by Nebraska in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl national championship game and Florida’s worst regular-season defeat since a 45-24 loss to Florida State in 1992.
Said Spurrier after the game: “I don’t know what else to say except they were better than us. The Georgia Bullodgs are a better football team than the Florida Gators and they proved it tonight. They beat us in every area, they outcoached us and outplayed us and the whole bit. We have no excuses, they just beat us.”
What’s often overlooked is that the 14th ranked Bulldogs entered the game 20-point underdogs to the No. 6 Gators — an even bigger point spread than the 16 points Tim Tebow and Co. are favored by this year.
Of course, the 1997 Dogs, Jim Donnan’s best team, had Ward.
But this year’s Dogs do have A.J. Green. Bobo was a more experienced quarterback than Joe Cox, though if Cox had been given more playing experience, he’d probably be as good as Bobo was.
The big difference is the 2009 Dogs don’t have a Robert Edwards. Not even close. Or a Matt Stinchcomb on the offensive line. Or a Champ Bailey or Kirby Smart on defense.
And Florida has Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes.
Still, it’s good that the current Dogs can look at the record book and see that big upsets can happen in Jacksonville.

That was a great game for UGA…but this current UGA team doesn’t have what it takes to man up against FLA.
FLA has better players on both offense and defense. Logic dictates FLA wins this game any way you wanna look at it.

You are just too much, Bill. Tell those boys not to look too closely at the record books, they might find out that Florida has owned Georgia, not just since 1990, but since the advent of PLASTIC. That’s right, look it up. Gators started winning after they scrapped the leather helmet.

DEAREST PUPPY DAWGS – HERE YOU GO, TO THE TUNE
“BALLAD OF GILLIGAN’S ISLE”
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip
To Jacksonville in Florida, by a team not worth a flip
Their QB was named Joey Cox, he viewed his fans as fools
The little doggies took the field for a 3 hour school , a 3 hour school
The beatdown started getting rough, the pups were whipped and tossed
If not for the one star named AJ, each game would be a loss, each game would be a loss
The puppies tucked their tails and ran across their home state line
The post-game interviews were short, just blame the refs each time, blame the refs each time
With Bobo, and Willie too, “Special” John, and Saint Mark
The Looooosing squad,
Crept back to Athens with the rest
Here in Jax, Floridaaaaaaa

Here’s a dose of reality. The entire state of Georgia acknowledges the decline of Georgia and eth ascention of Georgia Tech. The Memory Lane blog is good for nostalgia and there were some great teams over the years for Georgia but we live in the 21st century now and it’s over. No one talks about Georgia football any more, it’s “what’s Tech doing”? Keep the pipes lit and we’ll try to remember back when with you when we can.

That’s absolutely correct…but it starts with the coaching and then the personnel on both offense and defense. Look @ this year’s FLA squad. Would you take any of UGA’s coaches over the FLA staff, or any of their starters on defense/offense (aside from AJ, maybe Rennie and Owens).
FLA has better coaching (I can’t stand that ego maniac Meyer but he’s a darn good coach) and better players.
UGA has serious catching up to do. CMR has to either go or find new OC and DC and start recruiting better players (that fit the schemes at UGA) or simply needs to be replaced and a total rebuilding needs to take place (when Donnan was fired)

SkipperIsAceAndGaryLike:
Riddell introduced the plastic football helmet in 1939, a Georgia win. Since then… (all records are indicated with UGA on the LEFT)
1940s: 7-2
1950s: 4-6
1960s: 3-6-1
1970s: 7-3
1980s: 8-2
1990s: 1-9
2000s: 2-7
Total: 33-35-1 (that’s from 1939 through today)
I count four decades in favor of the Gators and three decades in favor of the Bulldogs. Also, I’m being generous and counting 1942, which actually doesn’t count because we fielded no varsity team that year.
Check YOUR facts, son.

Remember I said it, the Dawgs will not score more than 20 points on Saturday so to win they will have to hold the Florida Offense to under 20 points to win the game. Good luck!

These techies think they have a dynasty. As usual, every 8 or 10 years they lure a good coach (on his way up), keep him for a couple or 3 years and then he moves on. This one will move on when 1) a school that can sell all of it’s tickets calls his name, 2) he demonstrates that his high school offense doesn’t work for long in the big boys’ leagues, 3) when coaching in a ghetto with nothing but goat boys and ugly women around to look at. UGA, on the other hand, is down now but who the hell thinks it’s gonna stay down, other than a followers of goat boy tech “football”. THWGT!

So what? What a stupid article Mr. King – Even as a Florida fan, I usually admire what you write – but this one was like you were trying to pull one out of your a** to meet a deadline. That was 1997 – 12 years ago – and UGA had Robert Edwards. There is no Robert Edwards on this team. Besides – talk about penalties and officials making calls – if I remember correctly – on that 37 yard TD run that Edwards ran – there were 2 holding calls that were not CALLED. It seems funny how people remember the calls that were made and not the ones that were not. And UGA’s offensive line was holding on EVERY play – and got away with it. Yes – I was there – and we could not believe it (even saw it on the video tape later).

TCDAWG, the Gators are probably number one in stopping the run. They allow an average of 95 yards per game rushing. I think we would be better off slinging the ball from the get go to open up the running attack later. If we open with the run, it will be over by halftime.

I was in agreement with you that it is pathetic that we have to go back 12 years to find one of very few great moments in the last 20 years of Ga-Fla, but when you go on and on about holding calls not called (never happened for UF I’m sure) then you are the one living in the past.
Let’s all move on to current day. Doubtless UF will beat us soundly again. Hopefully we won’t be talking about phantom holding calls 12 years later though.

To the UGA fans that defend the fact that Florida has dominated you for the past 20 years by giving records from before this point I say, that’s great but it is never going back to that point. Florida will continue to dominate you for several decades to come. There will never be another decade where the Dawgs own the Gators, it’s not happening. Florida is an elite program, kids want to play football there. Gators have the #1 recruiting class as of today and are just racking up top players at all positions. There will be no Georgia-esque meltdown next year or five years from now, they will continue to out-class and defeat you most of the time.

I don’t even understand why the Techies get on here, but that one guy Trade School Poet etc has cut and pasted his prose on every blog this side of San Francisco. It isn’t that good, but if it makes him happy OK. I guess some of my favorite plays were more recent, but you have to love the Tebow Smackdown on the 17 yard line in 07, In this whole series though, the greates plays were the Lindsay Scott TD, and the Appleby to Wasington TD. I suppose that the 24-3 beatdown of #1 Florida was pretty good too!. One of the best tone setting plays of the series though was when Spikes hit Moreno last year on his first carry. That pretty well set the stage for the rest of the day.
Dogs will show up and play. We are out manned, out coached, out fanned, out banded, and out of excused, but I would take the 16, and have so far. I’ll bet we more than show up, and I bet we score first. GO DOGS

If anyone wants to blast Coach Johnson go ahead, but whatever you want to call it, the offense works and works well. Right now, no body can stop it consistently. It is an offense designed to get big plays and use lots’ of time on the clock. Hats off to those guys, heck they are playing a whole lot better than we are, and I dare say that right now, nobody in the country, is playing to the caliber which they are playing. You might think that it is high school, but old school Erk Russell invented that scheme, and Paul Johnson knows how to run it. Right now, I’d say it is a take you to school offense, and until someone can stop it, it will be. GO DOGS, BEAT GATORS

Richt is a good coach and a class act. With what the players have been through this year, I hope the planets line up, and the players find their best game Saturday. It can happen. These kids deserve it.
Never thought I’d say it, but……Go Dawgs!

My heart may be with the underDawgs, but my mind says “take UGA and the points”.

Biggest difference I see is Florida’s D has been simply untouchable. The only team that threatened them at all with the game in the balance was Arkansas, and their overall production was also pretty limited.
Man we had some talent in ‘97. Hard to see how we didn’t do more that season. But we’ve also got talent now that we haven’t been able to fully capitalize on yet. To be competitive, we really need a few players to have a breakout game this week to complement AJ on offense and Curran, Atkins and Owens on defense. Orson Charles, Ealey, Branden Smith, Boykin, or Rambo are all candidates. Or Caleb King — he’s had some good looking runs when he’s been healthy.
