Tebow-Walker comparisons are bogus

The SEC record book doesn't tell the full Herschel Walker story. (Associated Press)

The SEC record book doesn't tell the full Herschel Walker story. (Associated Press)

Florida’s most celebrated player of all time scored his 49th rushing touchdown against Mississippi State, tying him with Georgia’s most celebrated player of all time for the SEC record.

But as with so many sports statistics these days, there’s an asterisk involved. Or, at least, there should be.

As the Georgia Sports Blog points out, the Dogs’ Herschel Walker actually scored five more rushing touchdowns that he doesn’t get credit for in the SEC record book because the conference didn’t count bowl statistics until recent years, and those five Walker scores came in bowl games.

Why they couldn’t have updated the past stats to include bowl games when the rule changed, I can’t begin to understand. It’s not really fair to all the great players from the years before the rule change, but unfortunately that’s the way it is. Life isn’t fair, especially life in the SEC.

The blog also notes that it has taken a lot more games for Tim Tebow to catch Walker in the record book, since Herschel only played in 36 games total, including bowls, and only 33 that count in the record book. Tebow has played in 48 games so far, 34 as a starter.

The bottom line is that SEC records achieved nowadays don’t really match up with those from yesteryear. The comparisons are worthless. That doesn’t mean the players like Tebow setting conference records today aren’t great athletes and deserving of recognition. It just means that, as anyone who saw both men play can attest, Tebow is no Herschel Walker, no matter how loudly Gator fans crow in the future.

Still on the subject of the record, David Hale of Bulldogs Blog raises an interesting question: “Out of everything that’s at stake in this game,” he asks, “where does ‘not letting Tebow break the record against Georgia’ rank on things fans want most this week? If I told you that Georgia would lose by 20 points, but Tebow wouldn’t run for a TD, would that be enough of a silver lining?”

For me, the answer is no. I love Herschel and venerate him as highly as any UGA fan, but having that record eclipsed by Tebow won’t diminish No. 34’s impact on the game or his place in college football history one bit. And, let’s face it, unless his college career were to suddenly come to an end, the record is going to be Tebow’s before his playing days are over, even if he doesn’t run for a TD against Georgia.

I’d gladly give Tebow the record in exchange for a win by the Dogs. Wouldn’t you?

I’ll be off on Tuesday, as usual, but the Blawg will return on Wednesday.

Gator Guy your nuts if you think that is the end of the arguement..Tebow has 600 carries with what 90% of them inside the 10 or 3rd and less than 3 ?? Talk about pad your stats…Walker carried the ball from all over the field..Tebow is a very effective short yardage weapon..both great but again not apples and apples.

Both are great players, atheletes and even better people. Georgia fans have such an inferiority complex that they cannot admit that there is someone even to be mentioned as compared to Hershel. He was great in his time, perhaps the greatest college back ever as Tebow is also. My only real comment to Georgia people is this: you live in the past, unless you get rid of the current coaching staff that can’t win with consistent top 10 recruiting classes you will continue singing Glory, Glory Ol Georgia and the past will be just that; the past ( I hope Richt stays for the next 20 years)

Sunny PUrdue hit the nail on the head…you can downplay the record all you wish, but the entire nation minus athens knows that it is a bigger deal than what you make it in your story. You say he is doing it in 4 years, but he isn’t going to just beat the record by 1. His rushing numbers have also been cut down now that he isn’t running as much and in his freshman season, he had more than Walkers any one season. Quit hating on the guy and being blinded by the red and black and just admit that his really, really good. It isn’t hard to do.

gatorman..the debate is who is best that sort of calls for going back into the past and I would be very careful what you hope for…I too hope CMR stays for another 20 years..all the BS about UGA top recuirting classes have left out a key element until this year we have NOT been on par with the Gators top 10 classes yes but still back of the Gators..that is changing a few internal tweaks on the staff…and Saint Urban will have all he can handle..and another thing..once you and the rest fo the reptile fans have a couple of years outside the SEC and NC championships..it will be “when tebow was here” on and on FOREVER…

how2fish,

No when Tebow leaves, the offence with John Brantley will more represent how it was when Chris Leak was QB, oh yeah, we won an SEC and NC then also. Everyyear even when Spurrier was at UF, Georgia had top 10 classes; just face it Bear Bryant once said if UF ever had a good Head Coach that they would dominate and they have, except for the Zooker; oh yeah he even beat UGA 2 out of 3.

This is just silly. A pretty simple rule is that the best this year will be bigger, stronger, and faster than the best from three decades ago. Do you want to do a comparison? Here are UGA’s recruits from 1983- http://www.sicemdawgs.com/football/signees/fbsig_83.php

Offensive linemen were 6′3″ and 235-245 lbs. The biggest was 265. There was even a 210 lb DL.

Now look at last year- http://www.sicemdawgs.com/football/signees/fbsig_08.php

OLs and a DL at 300 or more. DBs are 20 pounds bigger. And that doesn’t look at speed, and they are ALL faster than 30 years ago.

Whiny dog fans are all bent out of shape cause the Gators are fixin to have the greatest rusher in the history of the SEC (doesn’t even need to be a running back to do it).

And, he’s doing it with just ONE personality!

So, don’t get too excited bout nothin going on this week, you mut puppy fans. Cause, your Obama lovin, gold chain wearin, national championship winnin neighbors to the south are thrilled that we’ve sucked you and your tax dollars back down here for another several years.

So other than the size of the players, the speed of the players, the talent of the players, the number of games per season, a SEC Championship game, bowl stats being included, Herschel’s multiple personalities vs Tebow’s one, one coach having the class not to run up the score and sit his star vs a no class coach that will let his star pad his stats against not competitive teams…it sounds like we have an apt comparison on our hands.

Both are special…but Herschel didn’t have an extra blocker like Tebow does when he runs, plus there was no threat of Herschel passing the ball to keep defenses on their heels.

Tebow is just a Fullback with some QB skills. You never know what he is going to do so you can’t scheme against it very well. The defense not knowing what is going to happen is a big deal and contributes to Tebow’s success.

Conversely, every Defense knew what UGA was going to do on almost every play, yet they still couldn’t stop it.

That’s why Herschel was better than Tebow is now…not to mention the fact that Herschel left his religion at church where it blongs.

Herschel was humble. Tebow is not. Herschel wins again.

T-mius 3 months until we never have to hear about Tebow again. He has overstayed his welcome under the media spotlight…I love college football but I would rather be forced to read an article about John Gosselin at this point than to read anything else about the circus attraction that plays QB in Urban Meyers super gimmicky offense.

Go away Tim Tebow and take your bible versed eyeblack with you.

Yep, you’re right, the Tebow-Walker comparisons are bogus, because Tebow is way better than Herschel Walker. The rushing TD’s are only half of Tebow’s scoring production and all of Walker’s. Plus Tebow is a much more important player because he is the leader of the whole team, not just the offensive workhorse that Walker was. Plus, Tebow has won two national titles and is in a position to win a third, and in a position to win a second Heisman. Plus, it’s silly to think that Tebow is not playing in a more competitive era, where all the players are bigger, faster, stronger. Heck, Walker was probably the only guy with a six pack back in the early 80’s. Now everybody on the field (linemen aside) are that way.

Don’t be bitter because you don’t have anybody that good anymore. Stop living in 1980.

Yea, call for the dance just like Mr. Self-righteous Richt pretended like he didn’t do the last time, but the CBS camera saw him laughing. Then you jack-asses pretend to be offended because Meyer called a timeout last year. I am surprised there was anyone left on the UGA side that even saw it. Hershel wasn’t too hot when he went to the NFL where everyone has speed, kind of like everyone in college today. Like what has been said; Tebow would be a pretty good running back also; what kind of QB would Hershel be today? I know, 1 personality is a RB the other one could be a QB.

Gatorman…I’ll bet if Walker played in the NFL his whole professional career, he would be considered one of the best to ever play.

Tebow will prove to be a man without an island in the NFL. No team will pay top dollar for a guy that is decent at QB, a good FB (provided no more concussions come), or an OK TE. It just doesn’t work that way in the NFL.

Tebow’s “move” is lowering his head and running over people…the rest is Meyer’s scheme, an extra blocker, or defenses being slow to react.

They were made for each other and I am glad its almost over.

Tim Teboe is a system quarter back created by Urban Meyers ability to out manuvere college atheletes , which most will never see a pro team . The first thing Florida has some of the best players of any team in the country so u cannot focus on stopping Teboe unless u want to get burned by some body runnin a 4.3 forty yard dash.He is a very good player but hes not in the league with Hershel or Bo Jackson .Teams built their whole defense to stop Hershel and still couldnt do it.This is how u decide how good of a player is at his position. Take the best player at each position offense and defense of alltime and u match them up in a fantasy game , Teboe would not be your starting Qb. He wouldnt be able to pass against Nfl caliber Db’s and top linebackers and defensive linemen would pound him when he decided to run. They need to stop boosting him up the defense of florida held Lsu to three points thats why they won that game. Put TEboe on Vandebilt with the same players and coaches and u would see really how good he is its the system and players around him.

Once… I’d say that is a worse record than UGA has against the Gators. So shut your trap you nectar sucking insect. You have a good team this year but you haven’t won the game yet. The main thing is u have to find the ball when youre on offense .Teboe has no more skill than Techs Qb. Why is Danarius not in any kind of heisman consideration

I hate to jump back in, but Herschel was the most dangerous offensive player to ever play the game. As a Jacket, we didn’t get embarrassed as much as some schools did by him, but I would never won’t to scheme against him. You could stop him 10 times in a row, but the 11th time he runs 80 yards for a touch down. Since I have no pony in this race, Herschel was the best of all time.

Walker played what 3 years in the USFL, didn’t dominate was just a fan draw and his only value in the NFL was as trade bait to the idiot Vikings which the Cowboys took advantage of. UGA won’t hit him in the mouth because they have become a finesse team, unlike they were when Hershel and the Junkyard Dawg defense days. I am telling you, you had better get a head coach who instills toughness instead of his fake goody 2 shoes image.
