Tebow-Walker comparisons are bogus

The SEC record book doesn't tell the full Herschel Walker story. (Associated Press)

The SEC record book doesn't tell the full Herschel Walker story. (Associated Press)

Florida’s most celebrated player of all time scored his 49th rushing touchdown against Mississippi State, tying him with Georgia’s most celebrated player of all time for the SEC record.

But as with so many sports statistics these days, there’s an asterisk involved. Or, at least, there should be.

As the Georgia Sports Blog points out, the Dogs’ Herschel Walker actually scored five more rushing touchdowns that he doesn’t get credit for in the SEC record book because the conference didn’t count bowl statistics until recent years, and those five Walker scores came in bowl games.

Why they couldn’t have updated the past stats to include bowl games when the rule changed, I can’t begin to understand. It’s not really fair to all the great players from the years before the rule change, but unfortunately that’s the way it is. Life isn’t fair, especially life in the SEC.

The blog also notes that it has taken a lot more games for Tim Tebow to catch Walker in the record book, since Herschel only played in 36 games total, including bowls, and only 33 that count in the record book. Tebow has played in 48 games so far, 34 as a starter.

The bottom line is that SEC records achieved nowadays don’t really match up with those from yesteryear. The comparisons are worthless. That doesn’t mean the players like Tebow setting conference records today aren’t great athletes and deserving of recognition. It just means that, as anyone who saw both men play can attest, Tebow is no Herschel Walker, no matter how loudly Gator fans crow in the future.

Still on the subject of the record, David Hale of Bulldogs Blog raises an interesting question: “Out of everything that’s at stake in this game,” he asks, “where does ‘not letting Tebow break the record against Georgia’ rank on things fans want most this week? If I told you that Georgia would lose by 20 points, but Tebow wouldn’t run for a TD, would that be enough of a silver lining?”

For me, the answer is no. I love Herschel and venerate him as highly as any UGA fan, but having that record eclipsed by Tebow won’t diminish No. 34’s impact on the game or his place in college football history one bit. And, let’s face it, unless his college career were to suddenly come to an end, the record is going to be Tebow’s before his playing days are over, even if he doesn’t run for a TD against Georgia.

I’d gladly give Tebow the record in exchange for a win by the Dogs. Wouldn’t you?

I’ll be off on Tuesday, as usual, but the Blawg will return on Wednesday.

I agree, Tebow can have his record, but let’s win the game. Every adult understands that Walker had to play much better football in less games than any modern players to set his records, including foregoing his senior season like any real pro prospect does.

Good points Bill. Also can you confirm something I heard years ago, but I’ve not been able to find the written data though I’m sure it’s out there to prove it one way or the other. But many of the games Walker played in he wasn’t used much if at all in the 4th qtr, and if you break down his actual game time, he only actually played the equivalant of 2.5yrs

Coach Dooly had class and would often sit Walker in the 4th quarter…when the dawgs had the game in hand….he could have easily had more TD’s if the dawgs wanted to run the score….

“Blutto’s right…” Very simple; Tebow is a great player, but he is of a different era. 12 game regular seasons, bowl stats count toward “career” and embarassing non-conference… errr… competition? Could you imagine what Herschel Walker might have done to Charleston Southern or Troy (some of UGA’s non-conference foes from ‘80-’82 included; Clemson, Texas A&M, BYU, and of course, GA Tech). Enough of this silliness. Tebow is a great player, but he is not a dominant player. He does not have the potential to score on every play. There are some who don’t even believe he is the greatest player in UF history.

Closet comparison for Tebow would be Andy Johnson
and not Herschel.
Andy was one of the greatest high school and college
quarterbacks I ever saw, but played as a running back
in the NFL>
I think this is where Tebow will eventually wind up.

Awww poor Bill showing his jealousy of Tebow and UF again. Tebow barely played in his first year. Why dont you compare how many carries Tebow has had 3 1/2 years to how many Herchel had in 3? Because you’d see your stupid games played comparison doesnt make a difference.

There is no comparison. EVERY one of the top twenty touchdown producers are running backs – except Tebow. He not only drives the team downfield, he pushes it across the goal. Running backs are supposed to score touchdowns. Just sit back and enjoy the greatest of all time.

Tebow is only a quarter therfore cannot compare to Herschel Walker who is a running back , best and only one.. no one can replace Herschel . Tebow cheats to run to gain touchdowns, he should be giving his running backs a chance to play .. he is ego , selfish… A very good quarterback indeed but not a running back .. So compare same positions , not different positions.. cant beat that.. no wayyyy.
I plan to file a complaint with ncaa for this …no such thing to compare two different positions..

How many 260-lb linebackers that have 4.5/ 4.6-speed did Walker run against? What about 290/ 300-lb Defensive ends with 4.8/ 4.9 speed? And those pesky 320-lb or God forbid 360-lb defensive linemen?

That would be none.

However, I do think Herschel Walker was a great back in the era in which he played. Who knows if he would be able to perform as well in the current era, with his running style, against the significantly larger and faster athletes of today’s college defenses.

Tebow does not compare with Herschel. Tebow is a great leader but for sheer talent he does not have the “wow” factor like Herschel did. Herschel only played 3 years of college as opposed to Tebow’s four. More importantly, Herschel played in an era of sportmanship. Once Georgia held a commanding lead, Dooley would call off the dawgs and not try to run up the score. Under Meyer, Florida routinely tries to pad statistics and run up the score. Just think of how many yards Herschel would have gained if he had played nowadays

Two completely different players from different eras, there is no way to compare them. Walker and Bo Jackson were the best combinations of speed and size that I have ever seen in a college RB, altough McFadden came close. IMO Records are made to be broken, so more power to Brother Tebow. It is fun to watch a special player even an “enemy” player, so break your record Mr Tebow, I don’t care. Just lose the game!

Bill, I don’t care about 1985. I don’t care about Tebow vs Herschel. What I do care about is the state of the UGA program and particularly how UGA is preparing for this game.

1. When I heard we were only praticing 2 times last week I couldn’t believe it. If you have two weeks to prepare/scheme they why don’t you use it? I don’t get it.

2. Will BOBO put in any new wrinkles in the offense to exploit any weaknesses in the Fla defense? If Cox does not get rid of the ball faster than he has been then he will get crushed. Our offensive line has turned into a bunch of pu$$ies. What are we doing about that? Shuffling pu$$ie around.

3. Where are the warriors on this team? Where is the coaching that will make this a competitive outing for UGA and not another embarrassment?

Let’s get serious here for a moment.

Kind of funny, as a damn yankee I have no dog in the fight. (no pun intended) Comments saying old school had to play better football? Different game today, it is now far faster and more physical walker was a physical freak when he played 230lbs with speed, now tha is normal.
The comparisons of games is valid tho Tebow did only start 34 which narrows the gap, and the biggest of all if you were comparing another running back the games and such would be hold more weight, but we are talking about a QB! I am not dissing walker but seriously, a qb tied for the most rushing tds, and he is probably pretty high on the passing list as well. and the position is far more challenging to play

Isn’t it kind of amazing when you look at it, that Tebow is gonna own the SEC record for rushing touchdowns and he already has 75 touchdown passes to go with it…oh and by the way, that’s 3 more than David Greene had with 4 years of starting at QB and couldn’t run a lick….that total for Greene by the way is the Georgia record for touchdown passes in a career. So, by analyzing the stats he’s better than your best running back…and as a sidelight, he’s better than your best QB as well…..Boy oh boy, and there’s a beat down coming this Saturday for the Dawgs on top of that and there’s the added bonus of him breaking Hershel’s record to boot. I hope he does it in the first half so that there will be at least a few Dawg fans left in the stands to see it.

I was just thinking about how some fans take the real enjoyment out of watching football. The crying and moaning when “they” lose and the trash talking when “they” win. #1- Fans are not part of the team so they haven’t won or lost anything. #2- Fans don’t do spring mat drills, or spend 12 hrs a week in the weight room, or have spring practice, or summer workouts, or two-a-days in 95% weather. #3- Fans don’t tear ACls or get concussions, or break bones, unless they get too drunk and fall down. You didn’t lose anything, you Bozos, unless you got too far into the bookies, and that’s your fault, not the players and coaches. You didn’t win anything either, unless you got lucky with the bookies, and that ain’t gonna’ last! Watch the game and enjoy these fine athletes. Tebows and Greens and Julios don’t come along that often. IMO this is the golden years of the SEC so quitchabitchin and enjoy the game, no matter who wins.

Dan – Tebow is what you call a TD vulture. He gets a much larger share of the goaline carries than he did getting to the goal line. However, as a qb, he actually does participate alot in getting to the goal line so it is impressive all the same.

The deal is though, he’s a good thrower and a good runner, but isn’t an all-time great at either activity like Herschel was. Tebow can clearly go into the top 10-20 players of all time discussion, but I don’t think you can put him anywhere near the top. Especially not now as in his senior season he’s really not producing as well. Defenses have figured out some of his advantages related to his “surprise” factor and shut them down.

This Georgia team has no piss and vinegar about them at all. Coaches don’t adjust well during thr game and game planning in general is “do what we did last week.” It is a sad state of affairs when what you wish for is to not get embarassed.

I am a die hard Dawg fan but I must admit that we need to keep it real. Walker is not on Tim Tebow’s level. Tebow is one of the greatest athletes of all time. That Tebow even has so many rushing touchdowns as a QB shows how great Tebow is. Tebow is playing two positions fo the Gators. That of the QB and running back. That makes what Tebow has done so much more difficult it is unbelievable really. I am sorry for saying this but I just feel as sports fans we must stop being biased. Tebow should have won his second Heisman last season but didn’t because of bias from BIG12 fans blindly supporting the QBs in their conference. It’s got to stop for the credibility of the game. Also, th defenses in Walker’s era were nowhere near what they are today. That Tebow can run against these defenses lie he does is incredible. There was nowhere near the offensive and defensive parity there is in the SEC today.
