Great Georgia wins over Florida: 1985

Vince Dooley and his Dogs celebrate the 1985 win over Florida. (About Them Dawgs!)

One good way to improve your mood when you’re feeling pessimistic about the Dogs’ chances is to look at games from the past where Georgia overcame the odds for a big win.

So as the 2009 Dogs prepare to meet the No. 1 team in the nation, it’s good to remember that Georgia’s only win to date over a team ranked No. 1 was against … Florida.

I well remember that 1985 classic in Jacksonville. It wasn’t televised because Florida was on NCAA probation, so I sat in the den of the Decatur house we were renting at the time, listening to Larry Munson describe the action on the radio while my infant son sat nearby. (As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I indoctrinated him as a Dog fan from the day he was born.)

The challenge for the 1985 team wasn’t quite as daunting a task as the one this year’s Dogs face, because Georgia was 6-1-1 at that point (in the days when games could still end in a tie) and ranked No. 17. And while the Gators’ quarterback, Kerwin Bell, was considered a Heisman candidate, he was nowhere near canonization.

Probably the best thing about the game, besides the final score, was that Georgia pretty much dominated it from beginning to end. Despite Bell throwing for more than 400 yards, the Gators could only muster a field goal. The Dogs sacked Bell five times and Steve Boswell had a fumble recovery that ended a 91-yard Gators drive in the fourth quarter. When oldtime Dawgs wistfully discuss the heyday of Georgia defenses, that’s what they’re talking about.

Meanwhile, a pair of Georgia freshman running backs ran wild. Keith Henderson racked up 145 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 76 and 32 yards. Tim Worley also topped 100 yards for the game, thanks to a spectacular 89-yard touchdown run that tied Johnny Griffith for the longest rushing touchdown in Georgia history. You can read more about the 24-3 victory at About Them Dawgs!

From there, Georgia went on to lose to Auburn and Tech and tied Arizona in the Sun Bowl, for an overall 7-3-2 record. So it was far from a great season.

But on that day in Jacksonville, the Dogs proved that you don’t have to be great to beat No. 1.

Georgia just beat the crap out of #1 ranked Florida that year. After breaking Georgia’s streak in ‘84, the Gators thought they would dominate us in ‘85. They never knew what hit them.

Same for ‘97. Georgia and Florida had similar records, but Florida was perceived to be much better. Except for two UF drives to begin the second half, we dominated from start to finish. 37-17. That was my personal favorite.

My memories of ‘04 are not as good – it got real scary after Georgia appeared to be cruising to a blowout. That was more of a case of relief. The win in ‘07 was nice, mostly for Tebow’s tears, but it was a surreal game with the celebration penalties and the mostly porous defense. We either sacked Tebow, they fumbled the ball, or they marched easily into the endzone.

I have the strangest feeling that Georgia is going to win on Saturday, and I’m not sure why other than we are more rested and Florida seems to be past their peak this year. In fact, they look a little ragged for an undefeated team. But Georgia has been very mediocre this year. Come to think of it, it feels a lot like ‘85.

“But the way this season is going, we’d beat FLA and lose to TN Tech.”

I’d take that in a heartbeat.

Dawgs fans like to read about the past when they know they have no such highlights in the future
Dawgs have no chance of beating Gators. CMR and staff do not even come close to matching Fla coaches

Ghost of Erk – you are apparently inebriated, suffer from Alzheimer’s or have a very selective memory re. the Dooley years. Dooley didn’t offer excuses after games – because he claimed every team we played was damn near unbeatable beforehand. Why offer excuses afterward when he already told us that it was almost impossible to win.

As for extracurricular activities – remember Jan Kemp? And there were no blogs, online arrest reports, internets/world wide webs to publicize every transgression of college kids who play football.

Crap on all this I remeber you know what. I am tired of living in the past. I want Georgia to be more than good looking uniforms. I want Georgia winning a National Championship. I want Georgia to make big history now!! All we have is old memories. Sad, it seems to The Norm At UGA. When are we going to get serious about winning instead of whinning. By the way I do not care if we beat FLA. 1000-0 we need some changes at UGA…

Ok … ok … Just one more point. Then I swear I’m going to bed.

In 2002 the Georgia Bullogs finished up at 13 wins and 1 loss. Who did my Dawgs lose to?

You guessed it … Florida.

Why did a Superior team lose to the (8 wins and 5 losses) Gators and then head coach Ron Zook?

Coaching. (O_O)

Will be hard for Dawgs to pull off the upset if they have to beat the refs too, Gators do not look like a #1 team right now, let the guys play & call a fair game without the lame calls the Gators have been getting, ask Miss. State & LSU, the refs should be wearing blue & orange shirts!

Thank you DawgSinceBirth for setting the NC record straight… I knew UGA had won more than one, but I wasn’t sure how many.

Matty Ice Chernoff… you apparently didn’t watch all of the UF games versus Arkansas and Miss. State. The Hawgs gave up the TD on that drive, missed what would have been the go-ahead field goal, and gave up the game winning drive all AFTER the call that went against them… the refs didn’t do that. And Miss. State hit a wall against UF’s dominant defense and wouldn’t have done anything with the turnover anyway… And this was AFTER UF went up 23-13. I’ll admit that both (Ark. game and MSU game) were bad calls that went in our favor, but that happens for everyone from time to time. The opposite is also true that your team will get hosed with bad calls every now and then. Against LSU, UF had a phantom late hit call go against them on a 3rd down that kept an LSU drive going and resulted in their only points of the game. Of course, it was only a field goal after the Gator D stuffed them on the goal line… that’s how we deal with bad calls that go against us, unlike UGA who forgets how to tackle and gives up 40 yard touchdowns with less than a minute to play.

Ok, I am realist so I am compelled to be OBJECTIVE about UGA vs. FLA this year (and not a BLIND HOMER). I love the Dawgs, but there is nothing for me to grab on to that tells me UGA wins. They have played POORLY on both sides of the ball (which includes terrible upfront blocking, questionable play calling, turnovers, penalties, poor coverage on special teams, TERRIBLE DEFENSE!!!!!, and just overall apathy). Yet, their are still BLIND HOMERS who blog (in bold caps I might add) that UGA somehow will overcome all of the above and win vs. the Gators…I JUST DON’T SEE IT. If any of you can provide solid evidence to the contrary, please enlighten me.

HBTD – I am glad you took the time to point out that FLA has won the past 6 of 8 against UGA. If you are thinking that Mark Richt will all of the sudden become a genius because of the OFF weeek, then you are delusional. The FACT is that UGA is poorly coached at almost every facet of our beloved football program (you are welcome to pull up almost every statisticall FACT FROM THIS YEAR’S TEAM). I appreciate your faith in the Dawgs, but FLA will win this game and pull away in the third quarter. My prediction is FLA 28 UGA 7.

While I don’t think that it is likely that UGA will win on Saturday, it is ludicrous to believe that they don’t stand a chance. If Miss St, LSU, Arkansas, and Tenn all had chances to beat UF, so does Georgia. Florida hasn’t looked too convincing in any of their recent games, and it seems they are ripe for an upset. Whether or not that upset will come this Saturday remains to be seen, but I would put it at about a 20% chance. Either way, I’ll be in that stadium decked out in my red n’ black cheerin on my school. GO DAWGS!

Ah yes, this was several weeks before Tech beat the dogs, when Gary Lee ran a kickoff back in the second half of a close game. While K. Henderson and T. Worley both had good games for Georgia, Tech’s defense (the Black Watch) has just enough juice to contain them for the win.

The Gators will win the game as we have already decided. Our offisheeyaterz (as any SEC flag thrower would spell it) had a meeting yesterday morning and were offered a truck load of money for ensuring a Gator victory. After all, Timmy T-Bone will not be denied as he is our idol. Yes, we all bow down to Timmy. Timmy has never, ever done wrong. We also bow down to the BCS scheme and all of the MONEY!!!! Our pockets are stuffed with $100 bills and we can’t wait to Christmas shop.

I do not need to read about ancient ga history …the football program at UGA is pityful….no # 95-100 out of 120 teams in offense and defense …we have great recruits ….but poor/ low IQ coaching from Reverend Richt all the way down will make great players into very mediocre …average …players ….I am tired of hearing about Richt is a great person …YAWN…..3 things are important …WIN WIN WIN >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
