Mark Richt's team has been its "own worst enemy." (Associated Press)
I’ll be on vacation the rest of Georgia’s bye week, though my brother Jon and I do plan on attending the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting on Thursday at which Mark Richt will be speaking. If he says anything noteworthy, I’ll share it on the Blawg.
In the meantime, here’s a link to a midseason review of Richt’s team by ESPN.com’s Chris Low. He naturally picks A.J. Green and Rennie Curran as Georgia’s midseason MVPs, but he notes that the Dogs have “been their own worst enemy for much of this season with turnovers and penalties, and the defense has again struggled. Going back to last season, the Bulldogs have given up 37 or more points in eight of their last 16 games.”
Low adds that the embarrassing game against the Vols is “the kind of loss, depending on what happens the rest of the way, that may force Mark Richt to take a long look at his staff at season’s end.”
A tough but fair assessment, I think.
Feel free to discuss that and anything else having to do with UGA sports in my absence. But keep it clean or you might find yourself unable to comment here in the future.
The Blawg will return on Monday.
Go Dogs!

I don;t think Joe Cox has really shown his NFL potential yet. He should against Georgia Tech’s defense on Nov 28th, and then again in the Sugar Bowl Jan 2nd. Look for him to be taking snaps for the St. Louis Rams this time next year!!
As for Georgia Tech, i have never seen a more over-rated team in my 16 long and mature years of life!! Gimmick gimmick gimmick…. NO Quarterback or Wide Reciever in their right mind will ever want to sign with Tech in the near future. After this class is gone, so long Paul Johnson supporters, we will not miss you, as you will be SILENT.

I feel like we have fallen a million miles since the 2007 Sugar Bowl. I used to think we could beat ANYBODY we played ( but Florida, but I always thought we could hang with them). Now I wonder Who we can beat. The coach’s say we’re running the same schemes, then are they throwing the players under the bus? The wheels have not come off, but they’re pretty wobbly. I have no Idea. I would like for some non Georgia Football fans on here to asses. Not haters, we know how you feel, but fans. People who love college football. At 10 wins a year, we used to line’em up and beat folks every week. What has happened ?

A total lack of coadhing. Same as last year, win on pure talent or don’t win on lack of coaching. Our players deserve better from our over paid coaches. Watched Richt on sidelines at Vandy doesn’t communicate with anyone except his head phones, you think you can get a team up without talking to them. Again huddles that Richt completely circled without any thing from him. What does this man do?

4-3, I did not see that one coming. I would have thought 5-2 was possible. I will grade out Willie on the DC Fantasy league back to the opening game and see where he falls with his peers. For the LSU game he beat out Chavis 14 to 18. Which inclines me to believe if we had an offense in the first half we would have won that game. The heck with the officiating.

Thinking that after the epic beatdown we will receive in Jax, people will feel twice as badly about our coaches and program as they do now.
There is no enthusiasm for the next game or for the next few years. We all see the downward trendline of the defense and the refusal to do ANYTHING about it-other than to reward the coaches for it. Never seen the UGA faithful so thoroughly whipped (except for the last years of The Goff Years: Reign of Stupidity).

Reality Dawg – “Crumbling program” is an interesting phrase. It looks like the head coach is trying hard to disguise that. If it’s crumbling, it would then be crumbling from within. Have you seen the commercial with the mannekin of Bobby Bowden? They lift the top off, and there’s nothing there.

Yes, Gman I’ve seen the CUM commercial and it is pretty bad but the ESPN Saban commercial is even worse. At the beginning of the commercial you can barely hear Saban say, “we’re ready”. Wow, that was the take they used? It must’ve been take #947.
I also noticed that you do not see a CMR commercial on ESPN. Just not one of the boys as we all learned at the end of 2007. That and our program stinks.

Random thoughts at midseason…
We showed some slight improvement in the Vandy game. Yes, it was Vanderbilt, but still, Bobby Johnson is no dummy, and we still beat an SEC Team. I will support Coach Richt as long as he is at Georgia. However, I agree that changes must be made. Having Coach Bobo on the sideline seemed to be a step in a positive direction. I’m not sure what is going on with Joe Cox. He does not seem to be the same since the Arkansas game. If he can pass as well as he did against the Razorbacks, we may have a chance against the Gators, because I certainly don’t foresee a low-scoring defensive war. Washaun Ealey still needs game experience, and the Florida defense will probably teach him a harsh lesson. Willy needs to really study the Florida-Arkansas tape. WE MUST PRESSURE TEBOW!!!!
Bill, enjoy your vacation, and I look forward to your return next week as the Blawg heats up for the Annual WLCP.

Our head coach hired a man that had 2 tenures of being a defensive co. at smaller schools, and failed both times. This hire reeks of hidden agendas, oh, wait, they’re best friends. NICE!! Richt put his personal agenda before the teams and it has royally bit him in the backside. I have no sympathy for him because of this fact. His unwillingness to make a change has cost us ballgames and perhaps championships. Do you trust Mark Richt? Why would he continue down a failing path. Because of his friendship? How much do we pay this man?

Arkansas TD,
I agree with you. After recovering that Vandy fumble in ‘07, we just punched people in the mouth the rest of the year. I’ve felt thrilled to have Richt as head coach since his first year and now I’m just perplexed.
The haters on these blogs complain he doesn’t scream enough as if screaming more were the answer. Adrian Peterson couldn’t run through the offensive line. It’s a question of talent and/or coaching. Remember when Spurrier used to really upset Goff by saying ‘they seem to win the recruiting rankings every year while we win the games’? By that I mean either the 5 star recruits aren’t for real or they’re not being coached up. I honestly don’t have a clue what to expect from this team. After this weekend’s games showing that ARK and SC were genuinely tough, this team desperately needed a week off.
But to your point, I’ve never been so confused by a Richt coached team.
I could see a perfect storm like Arkansas/FL and upsetting the gators and then losing to KY or Auburn.
Fire the guy in the mascot suit!

It is time to thank Joe Cox for his leadership and his attempts to play this year and remove the redshirt from Murray. I know he is a freshman and I know who we are playing next. He should not start against florida-let Joe start but let Murray play by rotating him in on certain series and depending on how the game is going, let him play an entire series or two.
Samuel should be moved to defense now.
Ealey and Jackson should get 80% of the reps at tailback.
King and Thomas can fight for the rest with King getting more because of pass protection.
Overall grade so far is a D

Chris – “he doesn’t scream enough as if screaming more were the answer”
He doesn’t do *anything* …apparently, there is no answer? I have never seen a coach like this. Successful CEOs surround themselves with competent people. Successful generals weed out the inferior. CMR is a CEO-type, and CPJ is a general-type, in my opinion. Either type *can* be winners.

DawginLex – I’ll toss back an obligatory THWG to ya
I wouldn’t say D, by normal objective standards. That is below mediocre. 8-4 is still a possibilty, and that may not what y’all are used to, but it is not terrible. UGA is 4-3, has only one “gimme” on the schedule, and it’s yet to be played. I’d say that looking back on this season could expose what is needed to move forward, and a hard look at all of the 10+ win seasons should be looked at. Last year had a few “miracles”…tipped pass at UK in the last minute, and some dramatic comeback wins that shouldn’t have been necessary with a solid team.

CWM’s defense played better than Bobo’s offense against LSU and UT.
Bobo, CWM and Fabris are all getting Ds IMO.
If the QB position requires change Logan should get first look. Overall I think it is scheme not the QB. Cox did as well as Stafford’s first 2 years (that uncludes ‘07) until the running game took a nose dive. Good defenses can shut down UGA’s running game and turn the team one dimensional.
UGA fans heard about a Logan Gray package but we have only witnessed one play. Let him in and run most of the playbook in the same roll Kodi has at Auburn.

We have no shot at a national title. Removes any possibility of an A.
We have no shot barring a miracle and complete meltdown by UF of winning the SEC or the SEC East. That removes any possibility of a B.
If we were to win out, I would backtrack and give this team a B.
Otherwise, with 6, 7 or 8 wins, this is a D or a possible C football team.

Dilbert, The offense nearly blew the UK game last year with turnover inside the redzone. CWM’s defense looked far from great but the offense did them no favors, as you stated the defense came up with the play to win the game not Bobo’s offense with a game killing drive.

Let’s see how the Vols do against Bammy before we stick our heads in the oven over that one. Everyone points out how easily we could be 1-6 instead of 4-3. By my assessment, we could just as easily be 6-1. I knew it was going to be that kind of season. I am not saying I am all that smart. I am just surprised at how astounded some folks are. Georgia is young. Youth is unpredictable. That may be to UGA’s advantage in the coming weeks. The win at Vandy may be a small “w,” but it is a win nonetheless. I think the engine finally fired on all the cylinders. Still not perfectly in tune. Probably not powerful enough to take out the Gators. If they continue to improve, though, the season could turn out respectable. Or terrible…. But then again…

Half time report; It’s the O-line stupid. The O-line was supposed to a strength returning a bunch of starters, however, maybe Moreno made them look a whole lot better than they were. Either way, with improved line play, Ga can get a lot better, without it 7-5 may be wishful thinking.

Murray is the future. Gray is not. Play Murray in 2009 along with Cox.

Logan looked better than Murray in the spring game. Murray reminds of the line of heavily hyped QBs at FSU since ‘01.
Beside even the great Stafford barely completed more than 60% of his passes in only 1 year and threw double digit INTs every year with Bobo calling the plays. Unitil UGA gets an OC, no QB will play as well as they can.

Check out the BCS standings. Florida and Texas are ranked No. 1 and 3 respectively, despite playing weak non-conference teams. Both know if they win out, they’ll play for the title anywayMeyer, meanwhile, knows that as long as his Gators win the Southeastern Conference, even with one loss, he’s probably in the BCS title game. The non-conference is meaningless to the Gators’ title hopes … unless they lose. So why risk it?
UF hasn’t played a non-conference game outside the state of Florida since the BCS was created and had only two outside Gainesville in the past five seasons. The only major non-conference team on the long-term schedule is fading Florida State. The Gators will play South Florida in 2010 and 2015, but other than that, it’s straight sisters of the poor.

I am willing to bet anyone on this board that this season will not, I repeat not be Willie’s last season.
I can already tell you what we will be the standard answer by CMR at seasons end:
“We have seen signs of improvement(of course, that will be because Boykin Rambo and Smith will have a few more games under their belts and will continue to improve in spite of poor coaching) so we will evaluate where we are as a team and a coaching staff and no changes will be made at this time ”

This just in and it is bad news for the “Fire Willie Now” crowd. The numbers are in for the October 3rd addition of the DC Fantasy league. As a request from my esteemed colleague 45 ACP, at least I think it was him, I added OKU’s Venables to the league. To my astonishment, Coach Willie finished in a tie for first place. It must have been the East German judge. The standings shake out as follows:
1. Our homeboy Coach Willie with 14 points in a loss against LSU
1. Kirby Smart ties Willie with 14 beating Kentucky. A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
3. Bumpas of TCU with 15 points. They beat SMU 39-14. SMU rhymes with PEW.
3. Venables of OKU with 15 points. They beat a Miami team and brought that balloon back to earth.
5. Foster of V-Tech with 18 points. They packed Duke 34-26.
5. Chavis of LSU with 18 points. In a team victory he lost the head to head versus Coach Willie. You still want him as a replacement?
More weeks yet to come as soon as I get the time. Willie had the toughest team on paper this week. He has graded a 14 previously. Muschamp did not have a game so he is not in the mix this week.

45 no problems. I should hit refresh before I post to see if someone has answered the question. Not the first time I have been “Tardy for the Party”.

I wonder if they do all the trashing in those rivalries that have a physical one-year trophy. You know, Paul Bunyan’s Axe, the Little Brown Jug, etc. That should limit the bragging rights to the current holder.
“We’ve got 62 Axes, and you beanheads only have 59!” Whiney.
“HEY-YO! WE HAVE THE DAMN AXE!” Inconvertible truth.

The current edition of this team is very puzzling and difficult to understand. We supposedly get all of these “star ” recruits, but either they were overrated by the services, or they are not being “coached up” by the current staff. I tend to think that many of the problems are with the coaching aspect, or lack thereof. There seems to be talent there, but a lot of it is not on the same page. What I mean by that is all this talent just doesn’t come together at the same time on either side of the ball. The offensive line was supposed to be a strength for the running game, but we are probably last in the conference in yds. per game rushing. And weren’t the “D” line supposed to be loaded with upper classmen as well? Secondary, is it scheme or talent not that good? Has the staff not seen enough of Cox to realize we maybe need to see more of someone else there when things are going badly? I find it quite hard to understand what this staff is thinking most of the time with regards to things such as play calling, defensive schemes, etc. This appears to be the worst coached team at UGA since the Goff era! Coach Richt is the CEO of this outfit, and surely he sees that some coaching changes need to be made. If not, then just maybe the CEO needs to be changed? JMHO!

Rabun Dawg – Makes me wonder. Was it always the plan to have a 5th year guy to start when it was obvious that Stafford would be NFL material early on? CPJ has been at Tech less than 2 years, and he has the QB succession lined up 1-2-3. And, the #2 guy in that order is a soph who played a lot last year as a true freshman when Nesbitt was hurt. #3 is redshirting this year.

Greg, EVERY year for the Dawgs (when their fans are less than satisfied) is a rebuilding year. What else is new ?

Your not getting your money’s worth from the coaching staff; but what do I care? I hope they keep all of them, especially CMR, Willie and Bobo.

Did I actually say “inconvertible’? That would be a ‘Vette with its ragtop stolen. I meant “incontrovertible.” Maybe I’m overblogged. No alcohol involved.

Look at the recruiting history for the offensive line.
Some guys didn’t work out. Some guys are injured. Some guys have left the building.
Recruiting mistakes from a few years back have come home to roost.
Stacey is an excellent OL coach. I’ve heard folks on ESPN and elsewhere say he is the best in college football.
Just my opinion, we welcome yours.

If you think UGA’s kickoff coverage is bad, chew on this. Scott Blair, Tech’s kicker has 4 solo and 2 assisted tackles in 7 games. Same problem as last year.

Techredneck is a poser..he is really an Alabama fan..How do I know? he misspelled too (spelling it “to”). and dont say it was a typo cuz he did it twice. No matter what I may think of my Tech buds otherwise, they all know how to spell “too”. Cmon Techredneck, admit it, you are a 6th grade graduate whose college experience was limited to driving past Tech on the way thru town.
I comment on that loser because what else is there to be said about St. Mark, Willie, BooBoo and the boys? You can only state “we suck” in so many ways. Lets face it, the season is shot. the roof is on fire and spreading fast.
Ive got season tix and Ill still go of course, but for all the other reasons besides the game.

45 – Last year it was the injuries. This year, Sturdivant is out again, but isn’t he the only loss? The preseason mags loved Georgia’s OL.

Clean house and get some fiery coordinators on the staff. Get a DC that will do the sideline visible motivational stuff that Richt can’t or won’t do.

The numbers have been loaded into the computer and the DC Fantasy League rankings are out for the week of September 26 or the week known as the Sundevils went down to Georgia.
First place by a Drew Butler punt is Will Muschamp. Well Texas did play UTEP(University of Texas but Extremely Pathetic) from the kneecap of the nation, El-Paso. Stay away from the bridge to Juarez. If that town was close to Augusta, it would be pronounce Gar-rez.
1. Muschamp with only 7 points. Texas beat UTEP 64-7. UTEP got a touchdown just for agreeing to showup.
2. Foster of V-Tech with 14 points for beating Miami 31-7. Nothing like homecooking.
3. Smart of Bama with 15 points defeating Judas Petrino and the Hogs 35-7 in the Hades Bowl.
4. Tie. Coach Willie gave the Devil’s their due in a close one 20-17. Willie got 18 points.
4. Chavis of LSU with 18 points by beating the other dogs of Miss State 30-26.
6. Bumpas of TCU with 19 points. The Horned Frogs went to Death Valley and grabbed a Tiger by the tail, 14-10.
Oklahoma did not play and neither did Venables.

I heard all the hype too about the offensive line.
It has not played out that way. Over rated, under coached?
I don’t know. I know what I see. Pass protection seems okay.
Run blocking, where it all starts, has been poor at best.

This fire Willie stuff is old. He is not doing a terrible job. Most of the early scoring was turnovers from the “O” at terrible times and places on the field. Even turnovers after the “D” had a 3 and out several times only to come back on the field. Willie has done a solid job. Not outstanding but solid.
In my opinion, we just have some puppies trying to grow up.
45 ACP was right on. A little weakness in some areas coming back to bite us. If we get the turnovers fixed we are a different team. I think the “O” has been much more concerning that the “D”.
So Go DAWGS!

Okay I know we all expect a national championship but this year isnt it, this is a rebuilding year guys. I think martinez should either be fired as defensive coordinator and just become the db coach. tenn killed us with the bootleg almsot every play and we knew what was coming and we still couldnt stop it. I blame that on martinez. Cox is not a good quarterback at all, He never looks off receivers he just stares them down and throws it, this guy has a middle school quarterback mind. Next year is gonna be our year guys, Just give it time. Time heals everything.
