Mark Richt's team has been its "own worst enemy." (Associated Press)

I’ll be on vacation the rest of Georgia’s bye week, though my brother Jon and I do plan on attending the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting on Thursday at which Mark Richt will be speaking. If he says anything noteworthy, I’ll share it on the Blawg.

In the meantime, here’s a link to a midseason review of Richt’s team by ESPN.com’s Chris Low. He naturally picks A.J. Green and Rennie Curran as Georgia’s midseason MVPs, but he notes that the Dogs have “been their own worst enemy for much of this season with turnovers and penalties, and the defense has again struggled. Going back to last season, the Bulldogs have given up 37 or more points in eight of their last 16 games.”

Low adds that the embarrassing game against the Vols is “the kind of loss, depending on what happens the rest of the way, that may force Mark Richt to take a long look at his staff at season’s end.”

A tough but fair assessment, I think.

Feel free to discuss that and anything else having to do with UGA sports in my absence. But keep it clean or you might find yourself unable to comment here in the future.

The Blawg will return on Monday.

Go Dogs!

I don;t think Joe Cox has really shown his NFL potential yet. He should against Georgia Tech’s defense on Nov 28th, and then again in the Sugar Bowl Jan 2nd. Look for him to be taking snaps for the St. Louis Rams this time next year!!

As for Georgia Tech, i have never seen a more over-rated team in my 16 long and mature years of life!! Gimmick gimmick gimmick…. NO Quarterback or Wide Reciever in their right mind will ever want to sign with Tech in the near future. After this class is gone, so long Paul Johnson supporters, we will not miss you, as you will be SILENT.

As for the Coaches for Them Da-Gum Dawgs… we are fina so long as we have Richt. Because Richt has Jesus, therefore jesus has The Dawgs.

I feel like we have fallen a million miles since the 2007 Sugar Bowl. I used to think we could beat ANYBODY we played ( but Florida, but I always thought we could hang with them). Now I wonder Who we can beat. The coach’s say we’re running the same schemes, then are they throwing the players under the bus? The wheels have not come off, but they’re pretty wobbly. I have no Idea. I would like for some non Georgia Football fans on here to asses. Not haters, we know how you feel, but fans. People who love college football. At 10 wins a year, we used to line’em up and beat folks every week. What has happened ?

A total lack of coadhing. Same as last year, win on pure talent or don’t win on lack of coaching. Our players deserve better from our over paid coaches. Watched Richt on sidelines at Vandy doesn’t communicate with anyone except his head phones, you think you can get a team up without talking to them. Again huddles that Richt completely circled without any thing from him. What does this man do?

4-3, I did not see that one coming. I would have thought 5-2 was possible. I will grade out Willie on the DC Fantasy league back to the opening game and see where he falls with his peers. For the LSU game he beat out Chavis 14 to 18. Which inclines me to believe if we had an offense in the first half we would have won that game. The heck with the officiating.

Thinking that after the epic beatdown we will receive in Jax, people will feel twice as badly about our coaches and program as they do now.

There is no enthusiasm for the next game or for the next few years. We all see the downward trendline of the defense and the refusal to do ANYTHING about it-other than to reward the coaches for it. Never seen the UGA faithful so thoroughly whipped (except for the last years of The Goff Years: Reign of Stupidity).

Reality Dawg – “Crumbling program” is an interesting phrase. It looks like the head coach is trying hard to disguise that. If it’s crumbling, it would then be crumbling from within. Have you seen the commercial with the mannekin of Bobby Bowden? They lift the top off, and there’s nothing there.

Yes, Gman I’ve seen the CUM commercial and it is pretty bad but the ESPN Saban commercial is even worse. At the beginning of the commercial you can barely hear Saban say, “we’re ready”. Wow, that was the take they used? It must’ve been take #947.

I also noticed that you do not see a CMR commercial on ESPN. Just not one of the boys as we all learned at the end of 2007. That and our program stinks.

Random thoughts at midseason…
We showed some slight improvement in the Vandy game. Yes, it was Vanderbilt, but still, Bobby Johnson is no dummy, and we still beat an SEC Team. I will support Coach Richt as long as he is at Georgia. However, I agree that changes must be made. Having Coach Bobo on the sideline seemed to be a step in a positive direction. I’m not sure what is going on with Joe Cox. He does not seem to be the same since the Arkansas game. If he can pass as well as he did against the Razorbacks, we may have a chance against the Gators, because I certainly don’t foresee a low-scoring defensive war. Washaun Ealey still needs game experience, and the Florida defense will probably teach him a harsh lesson. Willy needs to really study the Florida-Arkansas tape. WE MUST PRESSURE TEBOW!!!!
Bill, enjoy your vacation, and I look forward to your return next week as the Blawg heats up for the Annual WLCP.

A take-out hit on Tebow would stop the crumbling. It would kill the program. That kind of conspiracy would force the NCAA to do an SMU on UGA, cancelling football.

Our head coach hired a man that had 2 tenures of being a defensive co. at smaller schools, and failed both times. This hire reeks of hidden agendas, oh, wait, they’re best friends. NICE!! Richt put his personal agenda before the teams and it has royally bit him in the backside. I have no sympathy for him because of this fact. His unwillingness to make a change has cost us ballgames and perhaps championships. Do you trust Mark Richt? Why would he continue down a failing path. Because of his friendship? How much do we pay this man?

Arkansas TD,
I agree with you. After recovering that Vandy fumble in ‘07, we just punched people in the mouth the rest of the year. I’ve felt thrilled to have Richt as head coach since his first year and now I’m just perplexed.
The haters on these blogs complain he doesn’t scream enough as if screaming more were the answer. Adrian Peterson couldn’t run through the offensive line. It’s a question of talent and/or coaching. Remember when Spurrier used to really upset Goff by saying ‘they seem to win the recruiting rankings every year while we win the games’? By that I mean either the 5 star recruits aren’t for real or they’re not being coached up. I honestly don’t have a clue what to expect from this team. After this weekend’s games showing that ARK and SC were genuinely tough, this team desperately needed a week off.

But to your point, I’ve never been so confused by a Richt coached team.
I could see a perfect storm like Arkansas/FL and upsetting the gators and then losing to KY or Auburn.

Fire the guy in the mascot suit!

It is time to thank Joe Cox for his leadership and his attempts to play this year and remove the redshirt from Murray. I know he is a freshman and I know who we are playing next. He should not start against florida-let Joe start but let Murray play by rotating him in on certain series and depending on how the game is going, let him play an entire series or two.

Samuel should be moved to defense now.
Ealey and Jackson should get 80% of the reps at tailback.
King and Thomas can fight for the rest with King getting more because of pass protection.

Overall grade so far is a D

Chris – “he doesn’t scream enough as if screaming more were the answer”
He doesn’t do *anything* …apparently, there is no answer? I have never seen a coach like this. Successful CEOs surround themselves with competent people. Successful generals weed out the inferior. CMR is a CEO-type, and CPJ is a general-type, in my opinion. Either type *can* be winners.

DawginLex – I’ll toss back an obligatory THWG to ya :) I wouldn’t say D, by normal objective standards. That is below mediocre. 8-4 is still a possibilty, and that may not what y’all are used to, but it is not terrible. UGA is 4-3, has only one “gimme” on the schedule, and it’s yet to be played. I’d say that looking back on this season could expose what is needed to move forward, and a hard look at all of the 10+ win seasons should be looked at. Last year had a few “miracles”…tipped pass at UK in the last minute, and some dramatic comeback wins that shouldn’t have been necessary with a solid team.

CWM’s defense played better than Bobo’s offense against LSU and UT.

Bobo, CWM and Fabris are all getting Ds IMO.

If the QB position requires change Logan should get first look. Overall I think it is scheme not the QB. Cox did as well as Stafford’s first 2 years (that uncludes ‘07) until the running game took a nose dive. Good defenses can shut down UGA’s running game and turn the team one dimensional.

UGA fans heard about a Logan Gray package but we have only witnessed one play. Let him in and run most of the playbook in the same roll Kodi has at Auburn.

We have no shot at a national title. Removes any possibility of an A.

We have no shot barring a miracle and complete meltdown by UF of winning the SEC or the SEC East. That removes any possibility of a B.

If we were to win out, I would backtrack and give this team a B.

Otherwise, with 6, 7 or 8 wins, this is a D or a possible C football team.

Dilbert, The offense nearly blew the UK game last year with turnover inside the redzone. CWM’s defense looked far from great but the offense did them no favors, as you stated the defense came up with the play to win the game not Bobo’s offense with a game killing drive.

Let’s see how the Vols do against Bammy before we stick our heads in the oven over that one. Everyone points out how easily we could be 1-6 instead of 4-3. By my assessment, we could just as easily be 6-1. I knew it was going to be that kind of season. I am not saying I am all that smart. I am just surprised at how astounded some folks are. Georgia is young. Youth is unpredictable. That may be to UGA’s advantage in the coming weeks. The win at Vandy may be a small “w,” but it is a win nonetheless. I think the engine finally fired on all the cylinders. Still not perfectly in tune. Probably not powerful enough to take out the Gators. If they continue to improve, though, the season could turn out respectable. Or terrible…. But then again…

Half time report; It’s the O-line stupid. The O-line was supposed to a strength returning a bunch of starters, however, maybe Moreno made them look a whole lot better than they were. Either way, with improved line play, Ga can get a lot better, without it 7-5 may be wishful thinking.

Murray is the future. Gray is not. Play Murray in 2009 along with Cox.

Murray can run and throw and will be awesome once he learns the playbook and gets better at reading defenses. I’m stupid enough to believe that Cox could teach him as his QB coach.

I think UGA will lose to Florida (by 14) and Tech (by 7) and win the rest of its games. Because Chick Fil A / Atlanta will not want another local team in game (dramatically reduced economic boost), it is off to the Music City Bowl…hopefully William Green doesn’t come back.

Logan looked better than Murray in the spring game. Murray reminds of the line of heavily hyped QBs at FSU since ‘01.

Beside even the great Stafford barely completed more than 60% of his passes in only 1 year and threw double digit INTs every year with Bobo calling the plays. Unitil UGA gets an OC, no QB will play as well as they can.

Check out the BCS standings. Florida and Texas are ranked No. 1 and 3 respectively, despite playing weak non-conference teams. Both know if they win out, they’ll play for the title anywayMeyer, meanwhile, knows that as long as his Gators win the Southeastern Conference, even with one loss, he’s probably in the BCS title game. The non-conference is meaningless to the Gators’ title hopes … unless they lose. So why risk it?

UF hasn’t played a non-conference game outside the state of Florida since the BCS was created and had only two outside Gainesville in the past five seasons. The only major non-conference team on the long-term schedule is fading Florida State. The Gators will play South Florida in 2010 and 2015, but other than that, it’s straight sisters of the poor.

Stoops
“I don’t plan on changing the way we schedule,” Meyer said last summer.

I am willing to bet anyone on this board that this season will not, I repeat not be Willie’s last season.

I can already tell you what we will be the standard answer by CMR at seasons end:

“We have seen signs of improvement(of course, that will be because Boykin Rambo and Smith will have a few more games under their belts and will continue to improve in spite of poor coaching) so we will evaluate where we are as a team and a coaching staff and no changes will be made at this time ”

This just in and it is bad news for the “Fire Willie Now” crowd. The numbers are in for the October 3rd addition of the DC Fantasy league. As a request from my esteemed colleague 45 ACP, at least I think it was him, I added OKU’s Venables to the league. To my astonishment, Coach Willie finished in a tie for first place. It must have been the East German judge. The standings shake out as follows:

1. Our homeboy Coach Willie with 14 points in a loss against LSU
1. Kirby Smart ties Willie with 14 beating Kentucky. A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
3. Bumpas of TCU with 15 points. They beat SMU 39-14. SMU rhymes with PEW.
3. Venables of OKU with 15 points. They beat a Miami team and brought that balloon back to earth.
5. Foster of V-Tech with 18 points. They packed Duke 34-26.
5. Chavis of LSU with 18 points. In a team victory he lost the head to head versus Coach Willie. You still want him as a replacement?

More weeks yet to come as soon as I get the time. Willie had the toughest team on paper this week. He has graded a 14 previously. Muschamp did not have a game so he is not in the mix this week.

I wonder if they do all the trashing in those rivalries that have a physical one-year trophy. You know, Paul Bunyan’s Axe, the Little Brown Jug, etc. That should limit the bragging rights to the current holder.

The current edition of this team is very puzzling and difficult to understand. We supposedly get all of these “star ” recruits, but either they were overrated by the services, or they are not being “coached up” by the current staff. I tend to think that many of the problems are with the coaching aspect, or lack thereof. There seems to be talent there, but a lot of it is not on the same page. What I mean by that is all this talent just doesn’t come together at the same time on either side of the ball. The offensive line was supposed to be a strength for the running game, but we are probably last in the conference in yds. per game rushing. And weren’t the “D” line supposed to be loaded with upper classmen as well? Secondary, is it scheme or talent not that good? Has the staff not seen enough of Cox to realize we maybe need to see more of someone else there when things are going badly? I find it quite hard to understand what this staff is thinking most of the time with regards to things such as play calling, defensive schemes, etc. This appears to be the worst coached team at UGA since the Goff era! Coach Richt is the CEO of this outfit, and surely he sees that some coaching changes need to be made. If not, then just maybe the CEO needs to be changed? JMHO!

Rabun Dawg – Makes me wonder. Was it always the plan to have a 5th year guy to start when it was obvious that Stafford would be NFL material early on? CPJ has been at Tech less than 2 years, and he has the QB succession lined up 1-2-3. And, the #2 guy in that order is a soph who played a lot last year as a true freshman when Nesbitt was hurt. #3 is redshirting this year.

First place by a Drew Butler punt is Will Muschamp. Well Texas did play UTEP(University of Texas but Extremely Pathetic) from the kneecap of the nation, El-Paso. Stay away from the bridge to Juarez. If that town was close to Augusta, it would be pronounce Gar-rez.

1. Muschamp with only 7 points. Texas beat UTEP 64-7. UTEP got a touchdown just for agreeing to showup.
2. Foster of V-Tech with 14 points for beating Miami 31-7. Nothing like homecooking.
3. Smart of Bama with 15 points defeating Judas Petrino and the Hogs 35-7 in the Hades Bowl.
4. Tie. Coach Willie gave the Devil’s their due in a close one 20-17. Willie got 18 points.
4. Chavis of LSU with 18 points by beating the other dogs of Miss State 30-26.
6. Bumpas of TCU with 19 points. The Horned Frogs went to Death Valley and grabbed a Tiger by the tail, 14-10.

Oklahoma did not play and neither did Venables.

This fire Willie stuff is old. He is not doing a terrible job. Most of the early scoring was turnovers from the “O” at terrible times and places on the field. Even turnovers after the “D” had a 3 and out several times only to come back on the field. Willie has done a solid job. Not outstanding but solid.

In my opinion, we just have some puppies trying to grow up.

45 ACP was right on. A little weakness in some areas coming back to bite us. If we get the turnovers fixed we are a different team. I think the “O” has been much more concerning that the “D”.

These idiots are still adding and subtacting using their fingers and toes and you give them a 3″ playbook to memorize.

1. Venables of Oklahoma with 9 points. Oklahoma blows away the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes 45-0. The Sooner D dominates this game for one of the lowest scores ever.
Tie.
2. Bumpas of TCU with 15 points. They played the Texas State Bobcats 56-21. Cats got flattened.
2. Chavis of LSU with 15 points. They stomped Louisiana Lafayete 31-3 and sent him reeling back to France.
Tie
4. Muschamp of Texas with 16 points. They stopped the Texas Tech wind machine 34-24.
4. Foster of V-Tech with 16 points. They snuck out a win over Nebraska 16-15.
6. Smart of Bama with 17 points. They beat North Texas 53-7. But the D had zero sacks, zero interceptions. Well the Bama offense did run 24 more plays than North Texas, 73-49.
7. Coach Willie had a baddddd day. 24 points in the shootout with Arkansas 52-41. 7 points more than his closest competitor. Well Arkansas did play the Gators pretty tough, but that is all he gets. Pretty bad day for the D.

At midseason there are only two options for rating this team. Only two, and no equivocating. One: the offensive and defensive coaching is crud. Guys are either poorly coached, conditioned or positioned (or all three) on defense. The offensive scheme wouldn’t fool a high school coach. Two: the players this coaching staff has recruited are sub-par by SEC standards. Anyone who has seen our O-line fold like a deck of cards or opposing WRs catch the ball with nothing but 20 yards of green around them would admit this. Either way, both problems lead back to coaching/recruiting and heads MUST roll after this season. Martinez must go because his “epic fail” defense demands it. Bobo must go because he apparently lacks the brass balz to play his most talented players, regardless of the “Richt doctrine” of playing your upperclassmen come hell or high water. Fans can stomach a lack of talent during a rebuilding year. Fans can’t take a colossal mismanagement of that talent.

SAVE YOUR BEST MAN
(To the tune “Stand By Your Man” by Tammy Wynette)

Sometimes its hard to be a Head Coach
Taking abuse for your old Best Man
But if you love him
Oh, be so proud of him
After all, he’s your Best Man.

Save Your Best Man.
Go down the toliet with him.
And when the AD scolds you,
Just play a game with Vandy.

They should crank up – the moving van
Oh, Save Your Best Man!

This comment was made by one of the members of the broadcast team about the Denver Broncos Head Coach. “Players love to see a coach that is fired up on the sidelines, they feed off of it. The Denver Broncos are a perfect example of that.” When was the last time we saw Mark Richt fired up on the sidelines? Against Florida in 07. Can anybody deny that the players fed off of it. MR was fired up on the sidelines for every game the rest of that season and the results were amazing. After the season was over Mark Richt continued to be criticized for the endzone celebration that happened during the Florida game and he did not handle the criticism well. His response to the criticism has been to stand on the sidelines showing no emotions at all just going through the motions. The teams performance on the field is a direct reflection of their coach. Get FIRED UP Richt! There is no reason why the Dawgs can’t beat Florida. Go Dawgs!

What has happened is……1) Coaching stinks, 2) Too many star players trying to impress NFL Scouts, 3) No TEAM PLAYERS. Everybody out for themselves. Regardless of “how the season ends” there needs to be a fresh start on the defensive side of the ball. We will never get close to winning anything if that kind of crap keeps happening. You cannot lay 2-3 eggs a season and expect to play for anything other than a chicken sandwich ring. Even if we smoke the rest of the schedule (won’t happen) we still get to go nowhere. They better have enough police on hand in Jacksonville to arrest the Gators after they murder us. Hard to believe that another 10 win season is possible but that’s lookin’ at the brightest side possible and I would still call for change on the D side of the ball. 30+ points 50% of the time. Hard to ignore that one adnw ewon’t have the offense to keep up with that.

October 3rd Results Willie versus Wommack head to head DC fantasy league.

Willie versus LSU gets a 14 his best score of the year. Chavis also in the league, gets an 18.

Wommack versus Miss State gets an 18. Chavis versus Miss State graded an 18 also.

There is no strength of schedule built into the Fantasy league. I may be able to do it after I plug in all the numbers. A couple of the early games makes me think I may have put more emphasis on takeaways than I should as several directional schools got shut down without any take aways. I may relook at the formulas. This would not help Willie in his quest to not be free. It more than likely would help Smart, Bumpas and Muschamp but only by a couple of points or so.

A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Clarke County, GA courtroom drama last week when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible..

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Georgia Bulldogs whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Its a long season and there are still five or six games left with an outside shot at seven. The reality is Georgia could go three ways. Go 5-0 or 4-1 and have a pretty good season, Go 3-2 and have a down year or have a disaster season at 2-3 or even 1-4. It all is up to the players and the coaches…..not we Jabberwockys on these blogs…..but that is why we watch the games. We’ll see.

The three keys to a sucessful program are recuriting, recurting and recuriting.

It appears georgia has missed the mark with its multi star recurits. Both lines were not adrressed properly three to four years ago. The high school stars did not work out for one reason or another. Maybe should aim for some of the lunch pail lineman and see what they can do.

Y’all, we have to be realistic and steel ourselves to the outcome of the Florida game, which will likely be ugly. Florida would have to have their worst performance of the year for our boys to have a chance, and that just isn’t likely.

We do have enough talent to stay in the game, but as usual, the coaching just isn’t there. And you never know how many of our players will be in jail or suspended, bless their hearts.

Let’s all just stay focused on the one thing we fans can do, which is to come together to demand that Richt and his cronies be fired. All you have to do is look at Florida, Alabama, and LSU to know that we can do so much better.

After watching the Falcons beat the Bears Sunday, it occurred to me that I haven’t seen a hard-nosed defense at UGA in several years. Remember when a goal-line stand was possible, almost expected? Remember when yardage was very hard to come by against the Junkyard Dawgs? Our defensive scheme seems to be “bend, then break” under Martinez. We don’t often hit hard, we don’t wrap up, I don’t know what they do in practice but they look sloppy and confused on the field.

I believe that a team mirrors the coaching staff. Hard-nosed coaches (see Erk Russell) make hard-nosed players. Soft coaches (see Willie Martinez) make soft players. I’m sure Martinez is a great guy, so is Richt. But you can be a great guy and expect your players to knock the spit out of the other team. Heck, give ‘em a compliment as you’re helping them off the ground if you want to be nice.

Just MHO.

The ESPN commentary says “It’s the kind of loss, depending on what happens the rest of the way, that may force Mark Richt to take a long look at his staff at season’s end.”

I agree with that assessment, but Mark Richt’s name needs to be in that pot too. He’s taken us as far as he can, and that’s just not far enough, sad to say.

Midseason Assesment

Offense C – Average at best. Considering who we are starting at QB, RB, and OL…I think it could have been worse. Turnovers have killed us.

Defense D – Major underachievers. The defense has been put in some horrible situations due to our offensive turnovers. However, the secondary has been absolutely horrible. Too bad we don’t have 11 #35’s.

Coaching – C You can blame coaching all you want, but coaches cannot make plays. This team has shown a lack of focus and discipline at times. Some of which falls on the shoulders of coaches–some of which falls on the shoulders of players. Coordinators have come under fire.

Special Teams B – The highlight of this team so far other than AJ Green. Highlighted by a couple of excellent kickoff returns by Boykin and the excellent punting of Drew Butler. Only downside has been some poor kick return coverage and deciding when to and when not to field punts.

Quote from College Football News – Mid-Season Report

Note the last statement; “with Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky improving, the Dawgs need to show that they’re going to be a big part of the SEC East’s near future.”

I personally think UGA has ow been passed by TENNESSEE and South Carolina – and is fighting Kentucky for SEC#5 in 2010 and 2011.

This program is in BIG TROUBLE – and you could see it last year. Makes you appreciate how talented Stafford and Moreno were – they were smart to jump off this sinking ship!!!

Heres the QUOTE:
Coach who needs to have a big second half – Georgia’s Mark Richt
He’s not about to be fired, but the Bulldogs are in the midst of an extremely disappointing season and he needs a big, splashy win (Florida?) to show that he can still put together a squad that can compete at the highest level. His defense is awful, his offense is inconsistent, and his most dangerous weapon, outside of WR A.J. Green, is his punter, Drew Butler. While the Gators appear to be on their way to another national title, and with Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky improving, the Dawgs need to show that they’re going to be a big part of the SEC East’s near future.

Toga, you were right on the prediction. I was just using offensive numbers by the Vols prior to the game. If you took out the directional school and leave Ohio in UT was scoring 18.25 points per game and their opponets 25.5. Fortunately for them, we changed that situation for them.

I believe my Dawgs can win any game that they play. Most fans feel this way about their team. I know the Tech fans do this year. Do I think we “can” beat the Gators, yep. Do I think it “will” happen, nope. There is always a chance any time a team suits up. The game starts at 0-0. It changes from that point on.

I believe in being loyal, but there has to be a place that you come to where loyalty has to take a back seat to common sense. First, Willie Martinez has proven that he can take exceptional defensive talent and turn it into mediocrity at best. Mike Bobo has shown that his lack of imagination has the Dawgs looking less than average on offense. As likeable as he is, Joe Cox simply is not the man to be pulling the trigger right now. Let Logan Gray get snaps in practice and let him go against Florida, after all, he can’t do any worse. Let the freshmen start against the Gators to. King and Samuel are just not cutting it, make them fight to get it back, and learn to hold onto the ball. Let Prince Miller be a punt returner only, his interference penalties are killing us. I love my Dawgs, but somewhere, common sense and honesty must prevail. Please Coach, look at the team, they deserve better than they have been getting, then they will produce better than they have been giving.

BUT

There will also be a game where the UGA Offense that played Arkansas will show up in the same game as the defense that played OKST or Vandy/LSU AND they will BLOW some unexpecting team off the field

The state of Georgia is a much better place to live when UGA has a losing season. There are so many Georgie fans that the entire populace seems to be humbler, more polite, and better neighbors. So I jumped in my pickup and drove to UGA. After filling out a long admission form, they found out I was working part time as a helper for Leon Farmer, the Bud. distributor. I could become a student at UGA if I brought a case of Bud to every sporting event. That was 15 years ago and I finally got my degree in English Literature. I asked my professor at UGA about what you pointed out. You know, the proper spelling of “to” or “too” He told me it was a personal preference. He said some even spell it “two”. Thats what I loved about about UGA. You know their motto” don’t worry about your grades,” just bring the case of beer and you’ll pass every exam. clearly, this georgia team is not the same as other richt teams in the past and major changes need to be made.

after looking at the vandy rerun today, the team struggled for most of the game against a terrible vandy . the team showed some life toward the end of the game because the vandy defense run out gas at the end of the game.

we have little chance i am afraid with florida and we will be lucky to finish 500.

From a coaching perspective, CWM is not SEC calibre…his “prevent defense” from start to finish creates reaction, rather than proaction. Van Gorder’s defenses always positioned our players to make make plays, not just react to them. Thus, we were able to contain or make adjustments, then contain. Martinez’s defense is so predictable, as Crompton so aptly stated. And, Van Gorder’s defensive scheme made all the position coaches look good. That’s why it’s important to sever ties with Willie, Janeck, Fabris, and maybe even Rodney Gardner, who is actually just a recruiter. Gardner’s recruits are the ones who never seem to pan out either. Look to the Big Ten for a top notch DC. Just my opinion.

45, Wommack’s D has more passing yards per average than Willie’s also. Only by three yards. 234 to 237. Checking Muschamp’s, Smart’s, Venable’s numbers, it pays to schedule the directional schools. He said something about some country music singer on sidelines which you couldn’t even understand what he was saying and the GA announcers had to repeat it and make something out of his nothing comments. Just checked, not jealous of Tech. I am proud of their accomplishments this year especially with no defense. Hopefully Wommack will get it together soon, but with the averages he has been maintaining, I don’t see it.Giving up 3.29 touchdowns per game, 141.14 yards rushing per game and 236.71 yards per game passing will not win you a bowl game. Coach Willie’s average is less than Womack’s and we did not get to play JAX State. Go figure.

To share my thoughts on the Dogs at midseason, is honest and easy: they’ve come a long way. They did not mess up against Vandy, but handled an admittedly weak opponent with authority, 34-10. Meanwhile,
Florida slipped back several notches, in their narrow win over Arkansas.
With two weeks’ rest, and a new confidence, look for UGA to upset the Gators on Hallowe’en, 28-26.

Grade the ‘09 Dogs a D-…
I respect Coach Richt greatly, but coaching young players up (both physically and mentally) seems to be a real issue for the program. The problem seems to be that while these boys may be learning about character (and CMR offers a perfect role model), very few develop into strong team leaders. Except for David Greene and David Pollack, can anyone remember strong team leaders that led by example on the field and off. What has happened to the concept of a seniors being held up in the highest regard to lead lower classmen? Maybe it’s the early flight to the NFL, but maybe it’s misjudgment in recruiting. Not wanting to linger in the past, but Coach Dooley’s success came from a tradition of teams that were built on senior class and player leadership. As Evans and Richt go introspective after the season, hopefully they will take a hard look at player development with these ideas in mind.

The SEC has suspended referee Marc Curles’ crew for a few weeks. Curles’ crew (Michael Watson made the call,) cost Georgia their game with LSU. They also may have cost Arkansas their game with Florida. While this suspension by Commissioner Slive is deserved– I doubt Curles’ and his crew will do any better job in 2-3 weeks! Why wern’t they fired?

Cuz, kudos for taking the initiative to reveal the TRUTH thru numbers vis-a-vis Defensive Coordinators competence or lack thereof. However, rather than comparing actual yards rushing and passing against their defenses, you should use yards PER ATTEMPT. You should also take an opponent’s average yards per attempt (rushing and passing) and compare that to what they accomplished against each DC’s defense. See if the DC did better or worse than the average defense that team faced. And by how much. Then, you have a pretty accurate idea of who’s defense is best. Have you got that ? (BTW, it appears you have a dog in this fight and his name is Willie. )

Patty, I would have to add in more categories and I do not know if I have time to do it today. There are seven DC’s in the fantasy league. They have played fifty two games. I may be able to work on your request later today after several meetings. I will try it in a game and see where it leads. Just plug in numbers on a spread sheet once I do the formulas. Keeps me in practice while I search for employment. Next post the initial results,

I think it is funny that TENNESSEE can have 2 losing (5-7) seasons and a 4-loss season over the last few years,

BAMA can have a decade of bad seasons including 6-6 in Saban’s first year

FLA can have several 4-5 loss seasons (including bowls) during the Zook era and 1 of Meyer’s seasons

LSU just had a 7-5 season LAST YEAR

Auburn could be looking at 2 consecutive losing seasons

BUT when UGA finishes a consecutive #2 and #10, finishes top 10, 6 out of the last 7 and has 2 SEC titles in that time and then have ONE bad season after losing 3 huge peices early in the draft, ALL OF A SUDDEN people are saying “UGA is in decline” “UGA needs to rebuild their program” and tons of other GARBAGE

Maybe it has to do with playing 16 freshman, tons of sophomores, and very little juniors and almost no seniors against one of the toughest schedules in the country a year after losing the #1 and #12 overall picks at QB and RB…

To all of you naysayers and outsiders running down the status of UGA’s program, maybe, just maybe, UGA is re-building with young players to go on another run…GOOD GRIEF

Even Oklahoma is 3-3, Ohio St has multiple losses…Sometimes you have to be forged through the fire before you are hardend steel

Cuz

The numbers are in for the yearly performance of the cast of characters in the DC fantasy league. Leading by a wide margin is Venables of Oklahoma. No strength of schedule has yet been devised by me and when I do develop one, total win loss records of opponents sounds as good as I can get then add how many are Pop Warner leagues, some Coaches are sure to change. Oklahoma played: Brigham Young(L), Idaho State, Tulsa, Miami(L), Baylor and Texas(L). Just looking at the teams played, Georgia and Virginia Tech seemed to have the toughest schedule followed by Georgia Tech. No wonder they lurk in the rear. The order is as follows:

1. Venables of Oklahoma with an unbeatable, checked it several times, score of 13.833333
2. Will Muschamp of Texas with one point behind at 14.833333. Hook em Dawg. Venable beat Muschamp head to head by one point in their loss to Texas.
3. Kirby Smart of Alabama with 16.1428 points. Roll Tide Bama Stan.
4. Bumpas of TCU with 16.6667 points. They play in the Mountain West but have beaten Clemson and Virginia this year. They are currently undefeated. It should be a good game to watch them versus BYU this week.
5. Chavis of LSU with 18.833333 points. He lost the heads up to Willie by a score of 17 to 20 in the win over the Dawgs. You got to have an offense to go along with a defense.
6. Bud Foster of V-Tech with a 19.142. Foster lost the heads up to Wommack 20 to 22 in an offensive game. There was no defense for it.
7. Wommack of Georgia Tech with 20.2857 points. Not the worst Defensive Coordinator in the state of Georgia, but there is still time.
8. Last and on everyone’s hit parade, Coach Willie Martnez with 21 points. I have no idea how it equaled out to a number without a decimal. Willie’s teams graded out over 20 points in four of the seven games. A substandard performance so far. Take it for what you will. I will wait for the “Fire Willie” bandwagon at the end of the season. Feel free to crank it up if you want.

Without a doubt, the three coordinators who finished last appeared to have the toughest schedules. Only GT played Jax State for a tuneup game. Georgia and Virginia Tech have been in the fire all year. A strength of schedule may shuffle the deck a little but CWM will still probably wind up at the back of the bus. To be somewhat fair, he is being graded against three of who I think are the best DC’s in the country in Venable, Muschamp and Smart. I see them as going to HC positions not a lateral move.

So that is the standings of the current renditions of the DC Fantasy League. Get the pitchforks and torches ready. Someone see if they can find a ReMax balloon.

Have a great day and thanks Bill for going on furlough and allowing me to surreptitiously take over your blog.

If we truly were honest at the beginning of the year (remember I predicted a 7-5 season or 8-4 if we beat YECH) then this year is right on pace. Of course I based my prediction on having Martinez back, the tough schedule, and the loss of three great offensive players. I am a little shocked at losing to UT but I was also surprised we defeated both Arkansas and South Carolina. I thought we’d lose one of those but beat UT. Thus my preseason prediction is on the money so far with only a slight mishap in the prediction of two games that equal out.

I predicted we’d lose to UF…but I am beginning to wonder if this is not wrong. Anyone else get the feeling that we beat the GATORS this year??? They certainly do not look that tough! If we avoid having more turnovers than them I believe we win this game!

Cuz,
When Willie gave up 38 to GT last year(offense gave up 7 on interception.), he made it to the bottom of the list. He will remain there until CMR fires him, which is not likely to happen. I have had season tix since 1973 and this is the worst defense(or lack thereof) I have ever seen. I think Richt would rather disappoint 92,000 fans than fire an assistant coach and their family.

Realistically, who do you think UGA could get as a DC, if the position were open?

This blog’s title is “Share your thoughts on the Dogs at midseason.” Who really cares about fantasy football results? On the other hand, many Dawg fans are living in a fantasy world dreaming of past glory, so I guess it fits.

Here’s some reality for you: UGA is always going to take a back seat to the top teams in the SEC as long as Mark Richt is there. He’s taken the Dawgs as high as he can. Richt is a competent coach, but he’ll never be in the same class as Meyer, Sabin, and Miles. This has been a down year, and most years the Dawgs will be better, but they’ll never win their division and play for the SEC championship or a BCS bowl.

Samuel Adams, Jr.

I reluctantly have to agree wiith MargeW and others about Richt. A nice fellow, but not the winner we need so badly in Athens.

About the UF game: The Dawgs have a chance for an upset, but we’ll have to play perfect football with no turnovers or penalties, and the odds of that happening are pretty slim. Realistically, if I was betting today, I would take UGA + 17 points. I don’t know what the line will be next week, but I would guess it will be about 10-12 points for UF.

Techredneck was really funny yesterday. And there was a lot of truth in his post too.

Unlike GT, many of UGA’s fans have never seen the inside of a college classroom. These rednecks associate with UGA because of the illiterate or barely literate thugs and drunks who make up UGA’s football and basketball teams. These morons aren’t real college students. Look at what they allegedly major in, and ask how many non-athlete students are enrolled in these silly degrees.

Jan Kemp exposed this farce, and Dawg fans have been screaming about it for more than two decades. Moreover, the situation is even more blatant now. Vince Dooley never ran for political office because he knew his opponents would skewer him with this. Dooley knew exactly what was going on, and so does Richt.

It’s killing Dawg fans to see how well Tech can do with legitimate student-athletes.

So please… keep Richt, Martinez, and Bozo around for a long time. And get used to playing in no-name bowls in mid-December, and reading the headlines about the Player Arrest of the Week.

I’ve run UGA-UFL through my game simulator twelve times, and Florida wins every time by an average score of 42-10. If it rains, UGA does a little better. In the extreme case, with Tebow only mediocre and Cox having a better than average game, the score is 32-17.

UGA’s time of possession is actual about even with UFL, but it’s because UFL scores quickly in all simulations.

Couple of points
1. If UGA has had Top 5 recruiting classes the past five years, then why are they not even in the Top 25? It’s the coaching, stupid!
2. Richt is not engaged enough to be the Head Ball Coach. He isn’t with it. We will lose until the Preacher Man leaves Athens with his Deacons Bozo and Free Willie.
3. Peewee Herman could get a National Championship ring after 2-3 years at the UGA with all the football talent resident in the State of Georgia
4. Let’s all pray that Richt accepts the FSU head coaching job once they finally run Bowdoin out of town in Tallahassee. The UGA program will suffer the same fate as the once-proud FSU program until Richt leaves town. Even Bowdoin said that he was too nice to be a successful head coach.

“I promise you, we will never lose to Ga as long as I’m Coach”. Coach Kifen of Tenn. Why did he make a crazy statement like that. Easy, he knows the coaching talent or lack of it at Georgia. He has excellent Coaches working for him. They told him there would be no problem beating Ga. That’s a hard knock on the state of the program that Richt has let Ga. fall too. He must confront the problem no matter how distasteful it is to him. The program is placed in his TRUST!
