Mark Richt's team has been its "own worst enemy." (Associated Press)

I’ll be on vacation the rest of Georgia’s bye week, though my brother Jon and I do plan on attending the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting on Thursday at which Mark Richt will be speaking. If he says anything noteworthy, I’ll share it on the Blawg.

In the meantime, here’s a link to a midseason review of Richt’s team by ESPN.com’s Chris Low. He naturally picks A.J. Green and Rennie Curran as Georgia’s midseason MVPs, but he notes that the Dogs have “been their own worst enemy for much of this season with turnovers and penalties, and the defense has again struggled. Going back to last season, the Bulldogs have given up 37 or more points in eight of their last 16 games.”

Low adds that the embarrassing game against the Vols is “the kind of loss, depending on what happens the rest of the way, that may force Mark Richt to take a long look at his staff at season’s end.”

A tough but fair assessment, I think.

Feel free to discuss that and anything else having to do with UGA sports in my absence. But keep it clean or you might find yourself unable to comment here in the future.

The Blawg will return on Monday.

Go Dogs!

Daisy Mae is absolutely right. Why go another year with Richt when the outcome is going to be the same level of mediocrity. Face facts: Richt is NEVER going to beat Sabin, Meyer, and Miles.

45, Wommack’s D has more passing yards per average than Willie’s also. Only by three yards. 234 to 237. Checking Muschamp’s, Smart’s, Venable’s numbers, it pays to schedule the directional schools. And the one demension schools. For Willie to retain his job, we needed to open with East West Virginia State and Northwest South Dakota State.

oh wow, you cannot make the dawg fans up..all these years, you have acted like you cannot even be concerned with GT because your too caught up with you high and mighty games in the SEC. But here comes Loran Smith running his mouth in the UGA-Vandy broadcast how GT has nothing for VT. Since when do you hyprocrites even care? It has been 29 years since you won a national title and you act like it happened yesterday.. GET OVER IT and that includes Loran, my God, I cannot not believe how jealous you people are. By the way, I heard some of Loran on the broadcast as I was driving to the GT-VT game and he sounded incoherent and like he is 100 yrs old. He said something about some country music singer on sidelines which you couldn’t even understand what he was saying and the GA announcers had to repeat it and make something out of his nothing comments. I apologize if Loran is suffering from Dementia ..I don’t follow your games so I really truly dont know but he sounds like a hack, it is what it is

It was Jason Aldean. That was who Loran was talking with. You must have gone under a bridge and could not hear it. That is the problem with AM radio.

Just checked, not jealous of Tech. I am proud of their accomplishments this year especially with no defense. Hopefully Wommack will get it together soon, but with the averages he has been maintaining, I don’t see it.Giving up 3.29 touchdowns per game, 141.14 yards rushing per game and 236.71 yards per game passing will not win you a bowl game. Coach Willie’s average is less than Womack’s and we did not get to play JAX State. Go figure.

To share my thoughts on the Dogs at midseason, is honest and easy: they’ve come a long way. They did not mess up against Vandy, but handled an admittedly weak opponent with authority, 34-10. Meanwhile,
Florida slipped back several notches, in their narrow win over Arkansas.
With two weeks’ rest, and a new confidence, look for UGA to upset the Gators on Hallowe’en, 28-26.

Grade the ‘09 Dogs a D-…
I respect Coach Richt greatly, but coaching young players up (both physically and mentally) seems to be a real issue for the program. The problem seems to be that while these boys may be learning about character (and CMR offers a perfect role model), very few develop into strong team leaders. Except for David Greene and David Pollack, can anyone remember strong team leaders that led by example on the field and off. What has happened to the concept of a seniors being held up in the highest regard to lead lower classmen? Maybe it’s the early flight to the NFL, but maybe it’s misjudgment in recruiting. Not wanting to linger in the past, but Coach Dooley’s success came from a tradition of teams that were built on senior class and player leadership. As Evans and Richt go introspective after the season, hopefully they will take a hard look at player development with these ideas in mind.

The SEC has suspended referee Marc Curles’ crew for a few weeks. Curles’ crew (Michael Watson made the call,) cost Georgia their game with LSU. They also may have cost Arkansas their game with Florida. While this suspension by Commissioner Slive is deserved– I doubt Curles’ and his crew will do any better job in 2-3 weeks! Why wern’t they fired?

Cuz, kudos for taking the initiative to reveal the TRUTH thru numbers vis-a-vis Defensive Coordinators competence or lack thereof. However, rather than comparing actual yards rushing and passing against their defenses, you should use yards PER ATTEMPT. You should also take an opponent’s average yards per attempt (rushing and passing) and compare that to what they accomplished against each DC’s defense. See if the DC did better or worse than the average defense that team faced. And by how much. Then, you have a pretty accurate idea of who’s defense is best. Have you got that ? (BTW, it appears you have a dog in this fight and his name is Willie. )

Patty, I would have to add in more categories and I do not know if I have time to do it today. There are seven DC’s in the fantasy league. They have played fifty two games. I may be able to work on your request later today after several meetings. I will try it in a game and see where it leads. Just plug in numbers on a spread sheet once I do the formulas. Keeps me in practice while I search for employment. Next post the initial results,

After considering everything that I’ve read this week, I think that at least some of the coaching staff will be gone after this year, even if the Dawgs turn things around in the second half of the season. Martinez and Bobo are the most likely candidates.

I think it is funny that TENNESSEE can have 2 losing (5-7) seasons and a 4-loss season over the last few years,

BAMA can have a decade of bad seasons including 6-6 in Saban’s first year

FLA can have several 4-5 loss seasons (including bowls) during the Zook era and 1 of Meyer’s seasons

LSU just had a 7-5 season LAST YEAR

Auburn could be looking at 2 consecutive losing seasons

BUT when UGA finishes a consecutive #2 and #10, finishes top 10, 6 out of the last 7 and has 2 SEC titles in that time and then have ONE bad season after losing 3 huge peices early in the draft, ALL OF A SUDDEN people are saying “UGA is in decline” “UGA needs to rebuild their program” and tons of other GARBAGE

Maybe it has to do with playing 16 freshman, tons of sophomores, and very little juniors and almost no seniors against one of the toughest schedules in the country a year after losing the #1 and #12 overall picks at QB and RB…

To all of you naysayers and outsiders running down the status of UGA’s program, maybe, just maybe, UGA is re-building with young players to go on another run…GOOD GRIEF

Even Oklahoma is 3-3, Ohio St has multiple losses…Sometimes you have to be forged through the fire before you are hardend steel

The numbers are in for the yearly performance of the cast of characters in the DC fantasy league. Leading by a wide margin is Venables of Oklahoma. No strength of schedule has yet been devised by me and when I do develop one, total win loss records of opponents sounds as good as I can get then add how many are Pop Warner leagues, some Coaches are sure to change. Oklahoma played: Brigham Young(L), Idaho State, Tulsa, Miami(L), Baylor and Texas(L). Just looking at the teams played, Georgia and Virginia Tech seemed to have the toughest schedule followed by Georgia Tech. No wonder they lurk in the rear. The order is as follows:

1. Venables of Oklahoma with an unbeatable, checked it several times, score of 13.833333
2. Will Muschamp of Texas with one point behind at 14.833333. Hook em Dawg. Venable beat Muschamp head to head by one point in their loss to Texas.
3. Kirby Smart of Alabama with 16.1428 points. Roll Tide Bama Stan.
4. Bumpas of TCU with 16.6667 points. They play in the Mountain West but have beaten Clemson and Virginia this year. They are currently undefeated. It should be a good game to watch them versus BYU this week.
5. Chavis of LSU with 18.833333 points. He lost the heads up to Willie by a score of 17 to 20 in the win over the Dawgs. You got to have an offense to go along with a defense.
6. Bud Foster of V-Tech with a 19.142. Foster lost the heads up to Wommack 20 to 22 in an offensive game. There was no defense for it.
7. Wommack of Georgia Tech with 20.2857 points. Not the worst Defensive Coordinator in the state of Georgia, but there is still time.
8. Last and on everyone’s hit parade, Coach Willie Martnez with 21 points. I have no idea how it equaled out to a number without a decimal. Willie’s teams graded out over 20 points in four of the seven games. A substandard performance so far. Take it for what you will. I will wait for the “Fire Willie” bandwagon at the end of the season. Feel free to crank it up if you want.

Without a doubt, the three coordinators who finished last appeared to have the toughest schedules. Only GT played Jax State for a tuneup game. Georgia and Virginia Tech have been in the fire all year. A strength of schedule may shuffle the deck a little but CWM will still probably wind up at the back of the bus. To be somewhat fair, he is being graded against three of who I think are the best DC’s in the country in Venable, Muschamp and Smart. I see them as going to HC positions not a lateral move.

So that is the standings of the current renditions of the DC Fantasy League. Get the pitchforks and torches ready. Someone see if they can find a ReMax balloon.

Have a great day and thanks Bill for going on furlough and allowing me to surreptitiously take over your blog.

If we truly were honest at the beginning of the year (remember I predicted a 7-5 season or 8-4 if we beat YECH) then this year is right on pace. Of course I based my prediction on having Martinez back, the tough schedule, and the loss of three great offensive players. I am a little shocked at losing to UT but I was also surprised we defeated both Arkansas and South Carolina. I thought we’d lose one of those but beat UT. Thus my preseason prediction is on the money so far with only a slight mishap in the prediction of two games that equal out.

I predicted we’d lose to UF…but I am beginning to wonder if this is not wrong. Anyone else get the feeling that we beat the GATORS this year??? They certainly do not look that tough! If we avoid having more turnovers than them I believe we win this game!

Cuz,
When Willie gave up 38 to GT last year(offense gave up 7 on interception.), he made it to the bottom of the list. He will remain there until CMR fires him, which is not likely to happen. I have had season tix since 1973 and this is the worst defense(or lack thereof) I have ever seen. I think Richt would rather disappoint 92,000 fans than fire an assistant coach and their family.

Realistically, who do you think UGA could get as a DC, if the position were open?

This blog’s title is “Share your thoughts on the Dogs at midseason.” Who really cares about fantasy football results? On the other hand, many Dawg fans are living in a fantasy world dreaming of past glory, so I guess it fits.

Here’s some reality for you: UGA is always going to take a back seat to the top teams in the SEC as long as Mark Richt is there. He’s taken the Dawgs as high as he can. Richt is a competent coach, but he’ll never be in the same class as Meyer, Sabin, and Miles. This has been a down year, and most years the Dawgs will be better, but they’ll never win their division and play for the SEC championship or a BCS bowl.

Samuel Adams, Jr.

I reluctantly have to agree wiith MargeW and others about Richt. A nice fellow, but not the winner we need so badly in Athens.

About the UF game: The Dawgs have a chance for an upset, but we’ll have to play perfect football with no turnovers or penalties, and the odds of that happening are pretty slim. Realistically, if I was betting today, I would take UGA + 17 points. I don’t know what the line will be next week, but I would guess it will be about 10-12 points for UF.

Techredneck was really funny yesterday. And there was a lot of truth in his post too.

Unlike GT, many of UGA’s fans have never seen the inside of a college classroom. These rednecks associate with UGA because of the illiterate or barely literate thugs and drunks who make up UGA’s football and basketball teams. These morons aren’t real college students. Look at what they allegedly major in, and ask how many non-athlete students are enrolled in these silly degrees.

Jan Kemp exposed this farce, and Dawg fans have been screaming about it for more than two decades. Moreover, the situation is even more blatant now. Vince Dooley never ran for political office because he knew his opponents would skewer him with this. Dooley knew exactly what was going on, and so does Richt.

It’s killing Dawg fans to see how well Tech can do with legitimate student-athletes.

So please… keep Richt, Martinez, and Bozo around for a long time. And get used to playing in no-name bowls in mid-December, and reading the headlines about the Player Arrest of the Week.

Are we having fun yet? :-) :-) :-)
