Share your thoughts on the Dogs at midseason

Mark Richt's team has been its "own worst enemy." (Associated Press)

I’ll be on vacation the rest of Georgia’s bye week, though my brother Jon and I do plan on attending the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting on Thursday at which Mark Richt will be speaking. If he says anything noteworthy, I’ll share it on the Blawg.

In the meantime, here’s a link to a midseason review of Richt’s team by ESPN.com’s Chris Low. He naturally picks A.J. Green and Rennie Curran as Georgia’s midseason MVPs, but he notes that the Dogs have “been their own worst enemy for much of this season with turnovers and penalties, and the defense has again struggled. Going back to last season, the Bulldogs have given up 37 or more points in eight of their last 16 games.”

Low adds that the embarrassing game against the Vols is “the kind of loss, depending on what happens the rest of the way, that may force Mark Richt to take a long look at his staff at season’s end.”

A tough but fair assessment, I think.

Feel free to discuss that and anything else having to do with UGA sports in my absence. But keep it clean or you might find yourself unable to comment here in the future.

The Blawg will return on Monday.

Go Dogs!

Working on the Sept 19 DC fantasy league and it becomes real clear. These DC’s need some patsys to make them look good. Also, even with a patsy, teams still have kinks in their D to work out in the first few games. Bama plays North Texas and beats them 53-7 but Smart only gets an 18.

Just off the wire from a writer in Knoxville, Willie failed to make adjustments to Cromptons roll outs. Seriously.

Maybe all these five star recruits are great athletes, but have room temperature IQ’s and are uncoachable.

UGA signs some idiot who barely makes it out of high school, sends them to Hargrove Military for a year, gets their GPA bumped up, and then brings them in as a “true freshman” (Remember Danny Ware)

These idiots are still adding and subtacting using their fingers and toes and you give them a 3″ playbook to memorize.

Yeah. Riiiigggghhht.

Give me a guy who might be a step off on the 40 yard dash but is capable of learning and thinking. Give me Terry Hoage anyday.

Maybe Bobo is an offensive genius, but the players can only learn about five plays before they go “huh”.

Maybe it’s not coaching. Maybe this is as good as these guys can get.

@Lee – That’s where we are today. They are too smart, thank goodness for the late Jan Kemp. We need to pick up a couple of capable JUCO guys. Who are ready to play.

Terry Hoage types don’t exist anymore in football, minor league or pro baseball is easier and doesn’t require you to work towards a degree.

BTW, they should go get the fella that got kicked out of Florida. He’s in Texas at Blinn a JUCO tearing up the league. They are #1 and he’s looking and acting like Superman. Sorry Tebow fans okay he’s the Hulk.

Something for all dog fans: Last week Sagarin ranked the conferences in this order:

PAC-10, SEC, ACC, Big East, Big 12 Big Ten.

This week Sagarin ranks them:

Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-10, Big East, ACC, SEC.

The Big Ten went from last to first and the SEC went from second to last, and neither league played a substantial non-conference game last weekend. What happened here!

September 19th DC Fantasy League or the Free Willie Express. The only week Willie graded out worse was against the Vols when he had 25 points. This week he gets 24.

1. Venables of Oklahoma with 9 points. Oklahoma blows away the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes 45-0. The Sooner D dominates this game for one of the lowest scores ever.
Tie.
2. Bumpas of TCU with 15 points. They played the Texas State Bobcats 56-21. Cats got flattened.
2. Chavis of LSU with 15 points. They stomped Louisiana Lafayete 31-3 and sent him reeling back to France.
Tie
4. Muschamp of Texas with 16 points. They stopped the Texas Tech wind machine 34-24.
4. Foster of V-Tech with 16 points. They snuck out a win over Nebraska 16-15.
6. Smart of Bama with 17 points. They beat North Texas 53-7. But the D had zero sacks, zero interceptions. Well the Bama offense did run 24 more plays than North Texas, 73-49.
7. Coach Willie had a baddddd day. 24 points in the shootout with Arkansas 52-41. 7 points more than his closest competitor. Well Arkansas did play the Gators pretty tough, but that is all he gets. Pretty bad day for the D.

At midseason there are only two options for rating this team. Only two, and no equivocating. One: the offensive and defensive coaching is crud. Guys are either poorly coached, conditioned or positioned (or all three) on defense. The offensive scheme wouldn’t fool a high school coach. Two: the players this coaching staff has recruited are sub-par by SEC standards. Anyone who has seen our O-line fold like a deck of cards or opposing WRs catch the ball with nothing but 20 yards of green around them would admit this. Either way, both problems lead back to coaching/recruiting and heads MUST roll after this season. Martinez must go because his “epic fail” defense demands it. Bobo must go because he apparently lacks the brass balz to play his most talented players, regardless of the “Richt doctrine” of playing your upperclassmen come hell or high water. Fans can stomach a lack of talent during a rebuilding year. Fans can’t take a colossal mismanagement of that talent.

Screwed up on the Wommack loss to Miami. I forgot to add a category. He is worse than Willie with the Miami loss that week 24-23. He does beat Willie the following week with the win over UNC 13-18. He came in second that week. Looks like it could be a rollercoaster with his stats.

This last week Wommack graded out with an 18 in the win over the Hokies which is 3 points worse than Willie in a win over Vandy with 15. Foster was worse in the loss with 19. It could be that there is a worse DC in this state than Willie.

If the power of the Georgia defense can hold Florida to under 20 Points then they have a good chance of winning the game. As for next year don’t get to excited Dawg fans it won’t be much better then this year. Tennessee and South Carolina are on the rise and you are in decline. Plus anyone that thinks Florida is going to have a Georgia-esque meltdown next year, well its not going to happen.

Dearest and most special doggy fans and Richt apologists, this new jingle is just for you and just in time for your annual beat-down at Jax. Recall, when you sing this, that Willie was the Best Man at St. Mark’s wedding.

SAVE YOUR BEST MAN
(To the tune “Stand By Your Man” by Tammy Wynette)

Sometimes its hard to be a Head Coach
Taking abuse for your old Best Man
But if you love him
Oh, be so proud of him
After all, he’s your Best Man.

Save Your Best Man.
Go down the toliet with him.
And when the AD scolds you,
Just play a game with Vandy.

Save Your Best Man
And tell your wife and family
They should crank up – the moving van
Oh, Save Your Best Man!

(Applause)
