Two ways of viewing UGA’s win over Vandy

Dogs celebrate in Nashville. (Frederick Breedon IV / Special)

Dogs celebrate in Nashville. (Frederick Breedon IV / Special)

I’m not sure I buy the comparisons between this Georgia team’s situation and the 2007 team, which used a win over Vandy as a springboard to beat Florida and run the table, or the 2006 team, which rose out of the Richt era’s previous low point to finish strong with three wins over ranked teams. After all, Matthew Stafford was the quarterback of those teams, and he had help from names like Kregg Lumpkin and Knowshon Moreno.

Joe Cox is no Matthew Stafford, even on his best day. And while Georgia always has a chance as long as A.J. Green is on the field, the rest of the supporting cast of characters still has a lot of developing to do.

But college football is a screwy game, so you never know. While there was no jumping up and down at midfield, the Dogs reportedly emerged from the Vandy win pumped and elated. And this year’s Florida team doesn’t look invincible. I mean, the Gators barely beat an Arkansas defense that Georgia repeatedly torched earlier this season.

It’s one of those heart and head things.

My head says this win was only over Vandy, and it took the Dogs quite a while to get rolling against the Commodores, so there’s not much reason to think the Florida game is going to be anything but the predicted slaughter. However, my heart can’t help harking back to other turnarounds and upsets UGA teams have pulled in the past, defying the odds. And, hey, we have a bye week before Jacksonville and they don’t.

Don’t get your hopes up, my head says.

But my heart says, it could happen. It really could.

POOCH KICKS

Other thoughts and questions arising from Georgia’s much needed win over Vanderbilt. …

In the passing game, Cox didn’t have a great day against Vandy, particularly in the first half, but he wasn’t helped by at least four balls dropped by Georgia receivers. You could tell Branden Smith heard footsteps and flinched on that screen pass he dropped early on. …

Green only caught three passes Saturday, but he showed a new dimension of his prodigious talent with that shifty run for 65 yards and a touchdown out of a screen pass. As Mark Richt noted after the game, good things happen for the Dogs when they manage to get the ball into A.J.’s hands. …

Orson Charles made a great catch in traffic inside the 10-yard line. I still think he’s going to have a big day at some point this season. …

It took three quarters for Georgia’s ground game to get going against the Commodores’ rushing defense, the one aspect of their defensive game that’s pretty suspect. Only 27 yards rushing in the first half? And the toss sweep continues to work poorly for the Dogs because of penetration allowed by the offensive line.

But there were hopeful flashes Saturday. Surprise starter Washaun Ealey had a really nice 33-yarder and averaged 5.5 yards per run, and while Caleb King didn’t get a lot of yardage on his handful of runs, he bolstered the pass protection and scored two touchdowns, including a nifty run to paydirt on a screen pass. …

I don’t think it was just coincidence that the Dogs were more effective on the ground when they had two tight ends and a fullback bolstering the spotty blocking of the offensive line. …

Perhaps one of the reasons the end-around to Smith keeps getting stuffed is that it’s so predictable when he enters the game. A fake out of that might catch someone off-guard down the road. …

The move out of the box and down to the sideline was probably one of Mike Bobo’s best calls of the season. Too often in the past, his playcalling has looked as if he was out of touch with what was happening on the field. That’s not as likely to happen with him talking face to face with his players. …

Overall, the special teams had their best day of the season. Prince Miller made some really nice moves on his punt returns of 55 and 40 yards; if he had any speed at all, at least one, if not both, of those could have been touchdowns. Drew Butler did a fine job punting, especially into the stiff wind, and Blair Walsh continued to be reliable. Kelin Johnson and A.J. Bryant noted on the “Fifth Quarter Show” that they saw more starters on the kickoff coverage team, and the results were pretty good.

On the debit side, that attempted punt return by Logan Gray was ugly and the block-in-the-back penalty on that play put the Dogs in a hole. And is there any SEC team more susceptible to the fake punt that the Dogs? …

Also, when Georgia got a second chance at a field goal in the first half after a Vandy defender was flagged for jumping over the line to block the first try, that gave the Dogs a first down with 11 seconds on the clock. It seemed like a good opportunity to take another shot at the end zone and still have time for a field goal attempt, but instead they just kicked again. Not very aggressive. …

What with the empty seats and folks who didn’t wear black, Vandy’s attempt at a “blackout” ended up looking more like a “grayout.” …

The inconsistency of officiating in the SEC is getting ludicrous. Rantavious Wooten was rightly flagged for spiking the ball after a big catch, but when a Vandy player sacked Cox and then threw his towel in the air in celebration, there was no flag.

And then there’s the fact that Florida and Alabama seem immune to such calls. Tim Tebow gets away with constant showboating with no flags, and likewise Bama’s defense against South Carolina Saturday night. …

Finally, for those of you who like to imbibe, here’s a new drinking game you might try. Tune in to “Dog Talk” after the game and take a drink every time Jeff Dantzler refers to cohost David Greene as “the lefthander.” By the end of the show, you’ll probably be unable to walk.

Its great to chalk up a win, but like you said, it was Vandy. Some bright spots but still areas of concern. Cox still locks on to one receiver and often throws into coverage. Special teams are not so good, Vandy’s just worse. Florida looked beatable – without the bogus “personal foul” on Arky at the end, UF may not have had a shot at that field goal. We can beat Fla. but it will have to the best effort of the year.

We have some great young talent in the secondary. Boykin looked good in coverage and Rambo needs to get the minutes over Evans. If I never see Bryan Evans on the field again it will be too soon!

SEC officials will not allow UF or AL to lose until they play each other. They kept UGA from beating LSU and Ark from beating UF. I hate to say it, but college football is becoming more like the WWE wrestling show. These guys arene’t just bad, they are taking sides to make the conference look better. I also think some of the celebration penalties agaist UGA stem from the fack that V. Dooley is the one responsibile for this rule and they call is on UGA just to get back at him. Most of them don’t like the rule and are using it against UGA to make a point. This rule should be done away with and a taunting rule could replace it. It’s always OK for Tebow to celebrate and for U. Myer to be 20 yards out on the field. Is that a reward for being ranked #1?

Forgive me if I offend, but a win against the Commodores is kind of like waking up and still having a pulse – it’s nice, but it’s what you expected, and no particular cause to think you are any different than you were before the event.

I will still pass on drinking the post-Vandy win kool-aid offered up by the 2009 Sideline Dancing-Could Care Less What Fans Who Haven’t Play A Single Down Think-Blame The Refs UGA Team of “playas”.

I have my arms folded waiting to see what happens in Jax, thank you very much. Then we’ll see whether this team has found discipline or not.

There is no question that UGA has had to endure some “bad calls” and “none calls” ever since the “Celebration Penalty” 2 years ago against FLA.

We’ll probably continue to “pay for it”.

Sorry, but the fact that we beat Vandy like we were supposed to (and actually, we beat them better than anyone has all year and beat the spread in doing so) IS reason to believe we’re better than we were. This team hasn’t beaten teams like they should have this year, resulting in an average margin of victory for our first three wins of 6 points. This Georgia team for several years now has struggled to beat inferior opponents. This is our best win against Vandy since 2005 and that gives me hope that this team and coaching staff are improving.

Bill, thanks for someone finally pointing out the toss sweep doesn’t work! It’s not just our execution, though–it’s a terrible play in general the way we run it! We saw it work a little bit whenever we ran it with two tight ends, like you said. I suspect it might also work out of a spread formation really well. If Bobo ever calls a toss sweep again, I hope it is out of the spread or not at all. NO MORE TOSS SWEEPS FROM I-FORMATION!! STRONG I, WEAK I, EITHER WAY IT IS TERRIBLE!! Not even Knowshon could consistently get any yards from it.

I have the results for my first weekly Defensive Coordinator Fantasy League. I made it simple as possible, I have other responsibilities in life. I used Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart, Bud Foster and the fan favorite Willie Martinez. I would have included Chavis but he was unavailable as LSU did not play.

Five categories. Each gets ranked first through fourth. As in golf, the lower your total score wins. Ties as in golf are counted together then on to the next number. In one category there was one first and three seconds. I have not factored in strength of schedule yet, I need to figure a formula for that. Maybe later when I have a beer or several it will come to me.

This week the first through fourth is as follows.
Smart first place with an impressive 7 points. Played USCe
Coach Willie second with 12 points. It was Vandy.
Muschamp third with 13 points. Played U of not so OK
Foster fourth with 15 points. Played the Bugs, lost.

If you have a DC you would like to add for next week, let me know and I in my infinite wisdom as Commissioner of my league, will decide whether to add them. Strong, no way he is going to leave UF for UGA. Monte is not going to abandon his son. I am not convinced any of the others would either, but hey you gotta have someone for Willie to run against. Difficult to add an HC to the mix unless you count his DC.

Tune in next week for another thrilling contest.

Now back to our regularly scheduled pi$$ and moan session.

“Supposed” to beat Vandy.

UGA is not a member of the elite. Never have been.

Better than average, maybe

Prime example? The statue erected of Dooley. Mr mediocrity himself. 1 MNC in 25 years. 6 SEC championships in 25 years. .700+ winning percentage in 25 years.

Other examples? Goff & Donnan

Still want more? Richt wins SEC titles in years in which Bama & UF are down. Haven’t been close since.

Even more? Getting beat by Vandy at Homecoming, 2006. Getting beat by Kentucky at their Homecoming, same year.

Reel off some SEC championships. Make some runs & even win an MNC.

Then you can feel like you’re “supposed” to be a lesser opponent.

Just keeping it real & in perspective

A W, I’ll take it. But if you think we are talking turn around here, you are going to be vastly disappointed. Vandy, if not the worst, is certainly in the bottom 3 of the SEC, with absolutely the worst offense in the SEC. If Vandy had any type of passing attach, that game would have been vastly different.

We may get to six wins, but that will be about it. My fear is that, if we do luck up and trip Tech for example, and win a lessor bowl game, RIcht will make a case to keep the staff.

I always get excited after UGA wins no matter who the opponent is. I can’t imagine anyone saying otherwise. You don’t have to tear down a goal post over this win, but just because Vandy is a non-quality opponent, there is no shame to say you are happy and excited that UGA won.

But to assume that “just because” we beat Vandy that we’ll beat FL, or “just because” a former UGA team did “this” or “that”, is making an unrealistic leap. Reason is because of two things: CWM and CMB

When will Martinez realize the corners need to play tight on the line…make the receivers work to get open. lets hope we take advantage of the extra week to make some changes

DAWGS WIN! Typical reaction of DAs on this board:

- Vandy sucks
- Martinez sucks
- The playcalling/Bobo sucks
- Florida is going to kill us
- UGA might win two more games

(Most of) you guys kill me. Sports are entertainment! The idea is to enjoy the victories. Do you really think anyone cares what you predict will happen next week, at the end of the year or next season? Do you really think that your armchair quarterbacking is that insightful? Do you really think that saying you know what was going to happen AFTER a play makes you smarter than someone who has to predict what might work BEFORE a play?

Raise your hand if you were ready to email Damon Evans when Bobo called a running play to Carlton Thomas on 4th and 5. And let’s hear some more complaining about “not getting it to our playmakers downfield” – our biggest play of the day was a short pass to AJ Green who did the rest.

I have a great idea. Let’s petition the NCAA to force all of UGA’s opponents to run the same defensive scheme on every down. While we’re at it, let’s make their players stand still. Then we can fire Bobo and you geniuses could take over. Maybe you’d be able to call a play that gets a first down.

The Gators are comin’ for ya Marky. Two weeks to think about it. Two weeks to try and get that pitiful defense ready for a hosing by Tebow. Two weeks to dread the embarrassment. Two weeks for the drunken Dawg Nation to get the cars and rv’s packed to head down to Jacksonville for their annual bending over the fence and taking a thrashing. Two weeks for the unranked and unfeared Georgia Bulldogs to wallow in the mud puddle they’ve created for themselves. High expectation, stunning arrogance and utter futility with their team, their coaches and the state of affairs that is Georgia Football. Enjoy the off week boys and oh by the way, check the lastest rankings and see who the best team and best coach is in the state of Georgia.

Math Dog, glad to see someone else notices that Urban on the field deal. I’ve been complaining about it for four years now. Celebartion stuff is out of control in the SEC. Wooten, maybe a penalty, maybe not, but throwing the towel in the air should’ve been too!

Mr Objective, does that mean that Alabama won in years which UGA was down. Well then that was 91 and I know we were bad then. I guess for Florida it means that they were donw for about 60 years. Get real. UGA is good. Not great this year but good. They beat the team (ArK) that pushed UF to the end only to lose on some hokey SEC officiating calls. We beat the team that gave Bama all they wanted, and they were playing without the star running back. I really don’t care what you fair weather friends, and Jacket supporter on here think, Cuz, put that guy from TCU on the list too!

Now for reality, we played our first semi-weak team this weekend, and we don’t have a tough game next weekend. Maybe some time to heal and scheme. I don’t know if we can beat UF or not right now, but we sure can give it a shot. I don’t know if we can beat anyone else on the schedule right now, but I believe that we can and will show some domination throughout the rest of the year. Most of the big pickers said UGA would lose at least 4 this year, I thought 2, right now it might be 5, or it might be 3. GO DOGS, we may not win, but we are never losers.

The hypocrisy makes me want to vomit.

I know it sounds like sour grapes, but its really not. UGA did not deserve to win the LSU game no more than they deserved to win their other two losses. I would just like to see the rule applied fairly. Is that asking too much?

Amen to the SEC “officiating”. In my (vadka impaired) mind, the focus should not be on Florida. How in the heck are we going to get a ‘W’ against GT? GT is for real so UGA had best start trying to defend their offense right now. UGA has already lost any hopes of contending for the SECCG so the best bet would be to get the title for the state of Georgia at this point. Can I get an amen on that?

Here’s the deal–Yesterday we didn’t make the mistakes we made in our three losses. The penalties were fewer. There were fewer missed assignments on defense and we were able to muster a little bit of a running game. Even a team as poor as Vandy will beat us with the effort we had in Knoxville. With an off-week of hard work there is a drop or two of hope as we head down to Jacksonville.

Todd

Just because we leave Nashville with a win, still doesn’t prove very much. Offensively, I don’t think we blocked consistently well with respect to the running game. The running-game by committee is getting old. Allow Ealey to get in and stay in. Running backs need to gain a rythm but can’t with the in/out with our offense. The only receiver we can count on is AJ. No other receiver is reliable. I shutter to think where we would be w/o AJ. Defensively, they played ok…but then again..it was Vandy. This team is average at best. I fully expect us to get blown out versus Florida. From that point on, Logan needs to play quarterback. Get him ready for next year and keep the red-shirt on Murray and Mett.
I appreciate Joe and him being the complete team-player. But the time has come to prepare for next year. Start by bringing in Bumpus to be DC.
Bobo needs to open up the playbook next year and have more than 5 plays.
The offensive line has got to improve. There is no excuse, with the experience that we have up-front, to have the paltry running game that we do.

I have said it all year if you believe me or not, Florida’s defense is going to get them to the SEC Championship Game and after yesterday’s scare most likely undefeated. Here is a prediction for you and I believe it, the Gator defense will not give up more than 20 points for the rest of the regular season. They have yet to give up more than 20 and have only given up 4 Touchdowns and 52 points in six games. With that said the Dawgs defense will have to shut the Gator offense down to a low number. I don’t see that happening. You can’t compare the Florida-Arkansas game with the Georgia-Arkansas game you just can’t. I believe yesterday was Florida’s Mississippi State game from last year but they got the W this time. That game is going to wake them up a little bit and everybody knows there will be a lot more motivation for the Georgia – Florida game. We will see what happens but the Dawg defense is going to have to show up, play their best game all year, and keep the Gators out of the endzone.

It amazes me how some fans have all the answers. “WE don’t have good playcalling”, ” The refs. stole that game”. ” The D-coach didn’t make any adjustments”. ” Any fool could figure out our offensive scheme”. Its so funny to read these blogs. But thats what makes up college ball. I admit I don’t know any answers. If your team gets beat, the other guy was BETTER om that day.Thats why they play the game, TO SEE WHOS BETTER. PERIOD!

Agreed…Tebow, albeit a good kid, ESPN and ref’s etc. make you want to pull against him. Fla. and Teb., and col. football in gen. has become much like the NBA. If the powers that be (TV, nike, whomever) decide someone is their darling then they becomes next to impossible to defeat. “Cuz”, Bumpas would be a great fit here. Older(mature) on a young staff, 2008 F. Broyles finalist, Also def. line coach – 4 players on TCU d-line All Mtn. West, has coached in SEC (Tn.). Finally; do not discount a win over Vandy. We are always championing the SEC and last time I checked, they are still a full fledged member of the SEC. Not to mention going into the game were they not ranked # 20 nationally on def. So Vandy sucks but we’ve played some very, very bad Vandy teams very closely the past few years with better teams. This is also a Vandy defense that was allowing only 17 points a game (I think) and we doubled that. Say what you will but this was a solid win in my book.

The SEC officiating has become very suspect… gone the way of the NBA since Magic’s days… and the NFL… 2 straight weeks Brady turns his head to the ref, after negligible contact, and then the ref thros flag. EXACT same thing happened to Arky… Arky kid in great position, turns his head to the ball, negligible contact… incomplete pass. Then FLreceiver makes throw the flag motion and monkey in stripes does just that. What should be outlawed is influencing refs and taunting… NOT celebrations. SEC officiating headquarters obviously has an URBAN address… like in his pants.

I’m with the folks who say they have no problem with kids celebrating, gesturing or calling attention to themselves. Emotion is a big part of college football. Those displays are against the rules, but it’s a dumb rule. Heck, I don’t even have a problem with taunting, as unpleasant as it can be sometimes. I wish the rule would go away. But as long as it’s in place, they either need to call it on everyone or not call it at all. Just apply it consistently across the board. And that very plainly is not happening right now. There were gestures in both the Florida-Arkansas and Alabama-South Carolina games that were much more blatant than what Orson Charles did in the LSU game, but no flag. I don’t really think that there’s a conspiracy among the SEC refs to “get” Georgia. I’m not so sure, however, that there isn’t some sort of unspoken agenda to “protect” certain high-flying teams.

I have to take issue with Objective Opinionator regarding Coach Dooley’s record. Dooley coached in a different era and comparing his time as coach (the 60s thru the 80s) and the period of the late 90s-2000s is like comparing apples to oranges. In the 1960s and early 70s (up to 1971) teams played only ten games a season (not counting bowl games). There were no conference championship games back then. So if a team went 8-2 or 9-1, that was considered a great season; a 7-3 season was considered very good. Teams did not start playing 11 games until the early 70s so if a team went 9-2, or 10-1, that was considered impressive. Earlier this decade teams started playing 12 games and if you count a possible berth in the SEC championship and a bowl game, that adds up to 14 games. So a 9 or 10 win season nowadays would not be as impressive as it would have been 30 years ago. You mention Coach Dooley winning 6 SEC championships in 25 seasons. That averages out to be one SEC championship every four years, which was pretty good considering that there was a certain coach named Paul “Bear” Bryant who was coaching at Alabama during much of that same period and who dominated the SEC during much of the 60s and 70s.

I agree on the inconsistentcy in officiating. UGA is still paying the price for the endzone celebration in Jax. Sad, but true. It is shameful for the SEC to allow UF and Bama to get away with celebrations while calling it tightly on UGA. We need to start emailing the SEC now to make our complaints known. Maybe they will be more equitable during the game in Jax this year.

Great point on your is anybody more acceptable to the fake punt than Georgia!!!! This team is so predictable they always set up the punt return!!! We have good returners but when Gray is back there why don’t we try to block the punt!!! That part of our game has been missing 4 years!!! If you want this team to get a spark where do we usually get the spark? Special teams that is where!!! But we have to try to block a punt against Florida because there punter doesn’t ever get a return against him. Everybody has to fair catch it!!! Coaches all they have 2 do is look at that stat on Florida!!! If we can beat Florida we better play and coach every play to win like it is the last!! This coaching staff will have to be aggressive in every aspect of the game!!! Richt will have to give up calling a conservative game and GADA!!!!!!!!!

Eric, I meant no malice… which, in drinking terms, means bad ice… I just poured a shot from ye ol’ vodka bottle in the freezer… here’s to you and the Dawgs… I’m just looking for tangible improvement through end of season.

There is hope for the future… our secondary will be VERY good going forward… next year Bryan Evans will be gone, our young studs Boykin, Rambo, Smith, et al. are VERY athletic. With a new DC… please hear our prayers Lord… we need some DL, another LB, and we will be solid.

I’m sticking by Bobo… I think he’s been hampered by inconsistent execution by the players. He called a good game against Vandy… Cox completed passes to at least 10 receivers… I think we’ll see some new wrinkles against FL… B. Smith, or L. Gray will be on field when something happens other what we all expect. As for the toss sweep… prob. need fewer reps… but if we block it’s effective… and Ealey and King are starting to hit holes.

He brings all of the insight and perspective of any other jacka__ sitting on the couch watching the game. “Fan-journalism” is great on random blogs. This is not a random blog. It’s the Atlanta Journal Constitution. They have someone writing a prominent piece almost each day about the Bulldogs who knows little about the game and less about reporting. I question whether Mr. King is even in Athens during the week, or for the games. Each week this space grows increasingly amateurish. Thirdly, Unfairly or not you have been targeted by the refs ever since your BUSH LEAGUE celebraton down in Jax. 2 yrs ago. We still have not forgotten about that. Matter of fact, I see a few more time-outs late in the 4th with FLA up by 30 just so you can look at the scoreboard a little while longer. Lastly, you are officially 2nd best in your state. Regardless of whether you think they are nerds or not they kicked your azzes. Being UGA fans you should recognize that you dont really have a chance against them this year. Nice win and nice to win. But Vandy ain’t no Florida. Tebow runs like a fullback and he can throw when necessary. I don’t think the Dawgs have enough defense to even slow them down. Florida’s defense had an off day last Saturday, uncharacteristic. Don’t think for a moment that they won’t be pumped for this one, more than for the Hogs. It won’t take them much to shut down any running game UGA may attempt. And then they can just sit back and take the pics from Cox. Maybe the Gators caught the swine flu from the Razorbacks. It probably takes a few days for it to set in.

Hey Dawg ‘85 … you wanna see pathetic? Below is the most pathetic spewing of drivel that I’ve ever has the misfortune of reading … compliments of a fellow fan of yours named ‘BuLLdawg’ over on GT’s ‘Ramblin On’ Blog. Since he’s obviously so desperate for an audience who cares what he has to say, I’ve copied and pasted his entire rant below for the rest of you losers to enjoy [I'm sure he has a point in there somewhere that he is trying to make] ::

Notre Dame played its 1 good opponent all season long. And, Lost to knock Notre Dame out of the Top 25 of every poll. Notre Dame had managed, you recall, to Lose to 1 of its NON-RANKED opponents already. This is the only “opponent” on Notre Dame’s “Schedule” who is a ranked team, all season long.

Tennessee had a bye week. The vols will debut in the BCS Poll today at Number 43. The vols play Alabama next week, the only RANKED team on the vols’ “schedule” all season long except for Florida. The vols have already managed to lose 3. This week will be 4.

Florida beat LSU last week, the ONLY RANKED TEAM on Florida’s schedule, all season long. Florida beat South Carolina on a last second field goal, after the refs handed the crocodiles the game on the previous drive, with phantom call after phantom call to tie the game up. Then South Carolina missed an easy field goal that would have given Steve Spurrier the lead back.

Auburn, who plays its ONLY RANKED TEAM all season long next week at LSU besides the Alabama game to end the season, has seen fit to drop 2 of its games anyway. Auburn will debut in the BCS Rankings today at about the same ranking as the vols and Georgia do – all 3 teams NOT in The SEC top half but in the bottom half of The SEC.

The SEC will be the highest average BCS Ranking of every conference.

Oklahoma will drop out of the Top 25. Texas will be Number 3 behind both Florida as 1 and Alabama as 2.

LSU will debut at Number 7 in the BCS Rankings today, and ONLY plays 2 RANKED TEAMS all season long. The first was a Loss to Florida. The 2nd is Alabama and will also be a Loss leaving LSU in the Top 10 at the end of the season.

Ole Miss will debut in the BCS Rankings today almost in the Top 25, as it has on its resume the inexplicable Loss to UNRANKED South Carolina, which mars its season, just as the Loss to the UNRANKED vols mars Georgia’s season. Otherwise, Ole Miss plays 2 ranked teams in Losses to Alabama already and surely to LSU in the game before the Egg Bowl. It would be expected that Ole Miss will beat the lowly vols, right ?

Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino Lost to 1 Florida yesterday, 2 Alabama earlier and plays 7 LSU to end the season; but, Bobby Petrino Lost to UNRANKED Georgia leaving Bobby Petrino in the 2nd half of The SEC with the lowly vols and UNRANKED Georgia, all ranked about Number 43 in the BCS with the Average SEC team ranked Number 38.

Kentucky managed to beat Auburn this week, after having Lost 3 straight to 1 Florida, 2 Alabama and last week by 2 points to UNRANKED Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina hard luck crowd. There are no other RANKED TEAMS on Kentucky’s schedule besides 1 Florida and 2 Alabama, and the games at Georgia and then home to welcome the vols will determine Kentucky’s season.

Vanderbilt is not a good football team at all with Losses to Army and Mississippi State. So, you would expect Georgia Tech who plays only 1 game against anyone good, Georgia to end its season, to play Intramural Vandy in the game after next right ? Exactly. Vandy will end up 2-10 with its only win over a 1-A BCS team its win over 0-7 Rice. The only other win is over non-qualifying Western Carolina. Sad football team Vandy.

Mississippi State will end up 5-9, having a season no different from Vandy. So, you would expect that they too, played Georgia Tech, right ? Exactly.

Georgia Tech, who played 1 RANKED TEAM all season long and LOST, before last night, faces NO OTHER RANKED TEAM all season long. The only problem with Tech’s schedule, is that it faces Georgia to end the season, after having popped off its collective mouth (both of them) in here. The ACC is a really lousy conference.

Ohio State and Oklahoma both LOST AGAIN, which should knock both of the Top 25, but it will be close to about Number 25 for both, maybe.

The Big 10 really sucks, while they have Iowa (joke) and Pennsylvania State (joke) to act like those 2 at least are any good at all, while playing NO ONE.

Not that Michigan plays any one any good all season long.

TCU and BYU face off next week, and neither plays a single ranked team all season long, besides this 1 game. Oklahoma will drop from the top 25, in my opinion. Therefore the Mountain West does NOT look any good at all, all ranked about Number 100 the entire conference, otherwise – just like the Big 10 and ACC.

Southern California, who prefers to be called USC like South Carolina is, plays its 1 RANKED TEAM, Oregon coming up the week after next. Ohio State’s loss today to previously zero Purdue ruins any chest thumping by Southern California for having beat Ohio State. Ohio State, bwaaaah.

Purdue had lost its previous 5 games in a row, including to Northern Illinois, but beat Ohio State by more than a Touchdown this week to absolutely put a fork in Ohio State yet again this season. Ohio State has issues.

Kansas Lost its game against hapless Colorado, and still faces a season of 5 Losses for Kansas. Please explain how the block of voters who vote as a block had Kansas a ranked team, please ? The “top-rated” team on Kansas’ schedule so far this season is debuting today in the BCS Rankings at Number 71, Duke.

Missouri Lost to Oklahoma State. This knocks both Missouri and Kansas from the Top 25. obviously.

Nebraska Lost too, so all 3 of those teams should be dropped from the Top 25.

Ole Miss could possibly almost move back into the Top 25.

Tennessee will not.

Georgia has Losses to Top 15 Oklahoma State, Top 7 LSU whom we should have beat, and to lowly Number 43 Tennessee vols to ruin our season last week. We face Number 1 Florida, a beatable team will not beat, next week. Then, we finish our season totally PO d against Georgia Tech, in here shooting its mouth off – both of you Tech fans.

The Tech ticket office was open right up to kick-off tonight in supposedly the only game Tech has ever played. The game was NOT a sell-out. Even with 4 cokes, 2 hotdogs, a bag of peanuts and a free parking pass to every ticket purchaser against supposedly a great football team, blown out by Alabama, and who hasn’t and won’t play a good team besides Alabama all season long. The ACC is a sorry football conference of nobody football teams.

SoS for the full season shows UGA’s Strength of Schedule is Number 5 in the country and Georgia Tech’s NOT in the Top 50.

Let’s see, while UGA faces Number 1 Florida next game, who does Georgia Tech face the rest of the year besides us ? 66 Virginia, 108 Vandy, 50 Weak Forest, 71 Duke. Nice schedule there Tech. Wusses. Play a real schedule. Play in a real conference.

Georgia could end up playing 4 top 10 teams in the Final Polls this year. Georgia Tech is the 1 game I would not give 2 hoots for Tech’s chances in, not after last year and what has been on this rag since. Try comparing records. Oh Tech will play against an ACC Coastal team in a game which no one will care about and no one will go to the game because Tech fans don’t go to your own home games against teams supposedly in the Top 4 in the nation.

Georgia Tech plays whom for the ACC Chumpionship ?

BCS Number 50 Weak Forest ?

BCS Number 51 Boston College ?

BCS Number 58 Climpsum Farmers ?

BCS Number 60 Florida State Creminoles ?

BCS Number 74 North Carolina State ?

BCS Number 85 Ralph Friedgen Maryland ?

No one gives a rats’ behind who Georgia Tech plays in the ACC Chumpionship Game. Let’s talk it up AJ-C. Who will Georgia Tech play ? God. Who cares.

This crowd of coaches have come up with a novel approach to coaching to this year’s team. They, like some DAWG loves, are delusional and therefore didn’t think last season was the catastrophe and embarrassement that it was. Therefore, nothing needed to be changed. Right? Right. So in game seven, when half the season is over and at a robust 3-3, they decide to become innovative like having Bobo coach on the field instead of in the box. It took the Tennessee lambasting for them to do anything in the way of changes. Complacency? Thou name art the Georgia coaching bunch.

GAYTORS and TIDE are the higher ranked teams in the SEC so its harder for officials to make a call against them!!! If We were ranked the highest we wouldn’t get them against us!!!! USC and Ohio State get the same respect in there conferences!!! I don’t like the calls any better than the next guy but that is the hidden truth about officials!!! That just means we have to outplay every team ranked higher regardless of officials!!! Go DAWGS!!!!! GADA them GAYTORS!!!!!!!!!!

UGA needs someone on that team to step up and assume the roll of leader! Last season, this was a problem, but you had Stafford and Moreno….this year? Not so much! The Dawgs have lost their identity and they could find it against UF. UF is as vulnerable as they’ve been in a long time! Ark. showed that there are holes in their defense and their offense hasn’t done anything extraordinary this year. Give up the “Fire Martinez and Bobo” campaign till the season is over and rally behind your team! The talent is there! Get your identity back….we’re FINALLY puttin’ together a program that can give you a run for your money…win out the season (with exception to the last game, of course!)!

I was glad to hear an announcer suggest that Tebow was anything less than perfect in the Arkansas game. When Arkansas was flagged for excessive celebration, the announcer stated, “He didn’t do anything that Tebow doesn’t do after a good play.” It appeared in the Vandy/UGA game that a Vandy defender ripped the towel from Cox’s belt and threw it up in the air. It seemed that nearly every hit in the UF/LSU matchup was head to head, yet, no flags.

I don’t so much have a problem with the idea behind these penalties, but they seem to be so abstract that they cannot be consistently judged from one game to the next or from one team to the next. What are the players supposed to do?

A “W” is a “W” even if it is a “w.” Young teams need to celebrate small successes.

As for UF, does anyone have their hopes up? I will definitely be pulling for my team. I mean maybe if they play and coach perfectly and their is a solar eclipse in the third quarter… I will always have hope, but that aint necessarily having my hopes up.

If you think that the officiating is not going to favor an unbeaten Gator team over Arkansas you’ve lost it. Refs say holding can be called on every play, seems like it’s only used to stop a drive for certain teams as was the case in Gators vs. Ark. Also the pass interference call usually has it’s suspect times to be called.
Block in the back is another team killer that could be called on every return but is only called on certain returns on certain teams.
If you think Bill that the SEC is not going to protect their own and miss out on big TV games (Bowl Games) then your slipping.
Refs like to be on TV too, and the bigger the game the more they like it. Feather in their cap.
Bill did you know the ref who called the penalty against AJ Green was from the State of Lousiana?

Bill,
Tech fan here. I envy the dawgs in that they have a blogger and a seperate reporter for the team. Tech on has a parttime blogger in Chris who obviously doesn’t have the time to dvote to the blog that you do. Doug is a reasonable reporter, but seeing that he is a uga grad, he could never be expected to have the passion for Tech that you do for the dawgs.

To all the uga fans that think the ajc leans toward Tech, you are unrealistic. You are having a down year and you are going to get that reported. The reports sound bad, but they are true. But with the recruiting classes that uga gets every year, you will be back in hunt for a sec championship. I will still pull against you, but uga will be good again soon.

As for the celebrating penalties…this is not called consistantly from game to game. It leads to the frustration of the players, coaches and fans alike. The uga/lsu game was absolutely the worst. It was called pretty consistant within the game, but really none of the celebration calls should have been made. I was watching the Tech game that day and both sides would have had 45 yards in penalties had those officials been on the field.

What is really frustrating to me, having been an offensive lineman in my HS days, is that celbration by the defense happens way more often than by the offense and never gets called. That celebration is almost always in the taunting sense as well. They get away with it almost always.

I prefer that everyon just “act like you’ve been there before.” That is the ultimate “in your face.

Again, nice blog Bill.
But,
THWg!

Ok, everyone is THINKING we have a shot against the Gators.
1. They will hold us to 100 yards rush
ing
2. They will force Cox to beat us, which is doubtful, and put pressure on him all day, thus he’ll go 15 of 38 for 108 yards and no Td’s. You do the math.
3. Tebow will NOT lose to Georgia his Senior year.

4. Our D has struggled to hold an average offense at bay.Florida scores 35 to 42 points.
5. Do you really think Cox can engineer 35-45 points against the Gators. Uh, no.

I think CMR is great man and a real postive role model for these kids. Bottom line, the donors want to see a return on there investment .They are not geting it. CMR and his excuses has worn thin with these people. It wound not shock me to see CMR let go after this season.

What has happened to SEC officiating? Florida was the grateful recepient of two “phantom” personal fouls against Arkansas that led to the Gators’ second TD. On the first, for pass interference– NO flag should have bene thrown That was immediatley followed by one when the Hog player was reacting to a block by the Gator. These calls may have cost Arkansas the game right there!

The dawgs D over powered Vandy especially late in the game. However, on their blitz packages the big dudes (tackles) looked more lumbering trying to get to the QB. Need more speedsters in those blitz packages or else its a slow boat to china vs FL. If willie is smart he’ll study what Ark did to stop the FL option game early on and not wait or do what he usually does, soft D. Not sure you can stop Tebow all the time but hopefully they can snuff him some of the time to slow him down and don’t allow him to get into a rythem. D has to play lights out and just about a perfect game to stop FL. I worry about all that speed and our front 4 do not look as fast or agile as Ark’s front did in their game w/FL.

If miracles do happen it’ll most likely be the dawgs O playing and scoring like it did vs Ark. If so they have a chance or at least keep the score respectable. I

Doubt FL will have as many or any T/O’s as it did w/Ark. That would be a gift from heaven if they did. It’ll be up to the dawgs D to win this game and the dawgs O not to get overpowered by the FL D.

If GA keeps the score close they have a chance to win. Odds are against them if you base it on how they’ve played so far this season.
I believe in miracles and pray Willie and his D pull this off. It just might save his job if he does.

Any running play that shows the ball to the defense immediately and which runs E-W (i.e., outside the tackles) is destined to fail because of the speed of defenses today (especially on elite teams, ALA, UF, USC, for example). From a “regular” pro-set, I’m not even sure what the point of the play is, other than to get the ball to your back and let them find the hole. Problem is, as fast as defenses react today, there often is no hole to find.

The only team running wide with any consistent success (sorry — hate to say this here) is GT. And that’s because they run the option and their toss is going to a back already at the tackle spot (vertically) by the time he gets the ball. And that, too, will be shut down as soon as somebody figures out to blitz regularly into that running/toss lane.

If we’ve got a back who can throw out of the toss sweep, that might work once or twice during the year but the play itself — stinks up the playbook.

TENN 45-19…when we own you as we do- we can do whatever we want. Do me a favor- can you list the scores of the Bama-UT games as well as you can UT-UGA? That series is alot closer- so it might take you some time. A Hillbillie is a Hillbillie and ours is Orange like a big Pumpkin!

Bama Boys-
I think I hear the phone ringing. It must be the NCAA coming to investigate you one more time. Google NCAA, so you can understand what it stands for. By the way, where is Mike DuBose these days?
I am not going to whine like the UGA fans. You guys are going to give us a big time whipping on Saturday, but it won’t be because of the refs. You’ve got a better team, which is something you will never hear UGA admit.

Y’all, we have to be realistic and steel ourselves to the outcome of the Florida game, which will be ugly. Florida would have to have their worst performance of the year for our boys to have a chance, and that just isn’t likely.

We do have enough talent to stay in the game, but as usual, the coaching just isn’t there. And you never know how many of our players will be in jail or suspended, sad to say.

Let’s all just stay focused on the one thing we fans can do, which is to come together to demand that Richt and his cronies be fired. All you have to do is look at Florida, Alabama, and LSU to know that we can do so much better.

I really think the celebration is the worse rule in college football. I’m not a fan of taunting but what’s wrong with players celebrating as a team?

My primary objection to the rule is lack of consistency. I know that a lot of posters will say that I’m responding to the call against Georgia at the end of the LSU game but I was equally upset at the call against Washington last year, and it cost the Huskies the game.

And like a lot of folks, I really don’t understand why Tim Tebow is allowed to get away with his antics after touchdowns. I understand that the networks love to show his emotions, at the same time, the rules of the game apply to everyone and every team.

If they don’t, then the game is just a farce.

I think we’ve got it against Florida this year. A few reasons:

1) Historically, the outcome of this matchup doesn’t correlate to the level of skill or talent of the two teams. See early 2000s when Florida was complete crap, and we had David Greene & co. and lost to Florida every time.

2) The bye weeks. Florida almost always has a bye week before the Georgia game. Not this year. Georgia NEVER has a bye week before the game. We do this year. The only time I ever remember us having a bye week before and Florida not having one was 2007. Remember what happened that year?

3) Our biggest weakness is our secondary. When we’ve been getting beat, it’s been on the long passes. Seems like I’ve spent half this season watching Bryan Evans and Prince Miller chase after wide receivers. But Florida has no long passing game to speak of.

4) Our offense is capable when we get clicking. Don’t forget: we scored over 50 points on Arkansas. Florida struggled to score 23, which probably would’ve been 17 or 20 without help from the refs.

Marie_the_Dawg_Girl,

What is “sad to say” is that there are people like you who claim to be fans of UGA. Your comments are both pathetic and hateful. It’s obvious you despise our coaches. Why don’t you pick another team to “support”; we would all be better off.

[...] On top of these blown calls, there’s the inconsistent manner in which unsportsmanlike conduct flags are being thrown in the SEC, as I noted in Sunday’s blog. [...]

We here in Arkansas know who REALLY won the Florida game. If this Redding cat allows this cheating with Curles, he’s as guilty as they are. That’s right, I said cheating! But what do you expect, Florida has been the Golden Child of the NCAA this year. So, it’s not going to matter who actually beats them, Curles and Co. will just fix it. Goooood Luck Georgia, looks like your going to get hosed twice by these morons!
