Dogs don’t need to move any games to Atlanta

(Redelephants.com)

(Redelephants.com)

As expected, Georgia turned down the Atlanta Sports Council’s proposal to move the Georgia-Georgia Tech football game to the Georgia Dome at the beginning of the 2011 season. Like I’d said in my last post on the subject, there simply wasn’t anything in it for Georgia since the deal would have required shifting Tech’s next home game in the series to 2012, meaning playing the game in Atlanta two years in a row.

I think Georgia eventually will do one of those Kickoff Classic games in the Dome, but not against the Jackets. Since the game matches an SEC team against an ACC foe, I think Miami (Mark Richt’s alma mater) or Clemson (a longtime UGA rival) would be excellent choices for the Dogs to play. But it’s got to be a year when Tech is the only other BCS nonconference opponent. No more seasons with three of those, please!

Meanwhile, my esteemed colleague Mark Bradley (sounds like I’m making a speech on the floor of the Senate) floated the idea of Tech and Georgia moving their annual basketball game back to Atlanta in Philips Arena. He misses the old Cremins-Durham games at the Omni.

No offense to Mark intended, but that’s a terrible idea!

What reinvigorated the Georgia-Georgia Tech basketball series was moving it back to the home arenas. I do wish the schools still played twice a year, once in each gym, but I guess that’s too much to ask for in this era.

Sure, Philips seats nearly 19,000 for basketball, so assuming the game pulled a larger crowd than in its campus sellouts, it’d generate a much bigger gate than at Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum (10,523 capacity) or Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum (9,191).

But I don’t think either school is hurting for dollars that badly, and the loss of student presence (especially for Georgia) would make for a much less exciting atmosphere. If you’ve ever seen the Dogs and Jackets play at either of their home arenas, you know it gets pretty intense. It wasn’t the same at the Omni and that would still be the case at Philips.

The only way I’d see Georgia agreeing to playing in Philips would be if Tech wanted to move the game there from Alexander in a year when it’s the home team. And as I recall, it was their inclination not to do that which led to the game returning to the campuses in the first place.

You want to see Georgia and Tech compete in a neutral, noncampus venue in Atlanta? Go to the annual rubber game in their three-game baseball series held at Turner Field each spring.

PLAYER’S ARREST NO BIG DEAL

Georgia fans never like to see the words “arrest” and “Bulldog” together, but the report in the Athens Banner-Herald that backup cornerback Vance Cuff was arrested on a traffic charge Tuesday by UGA police in Athens wouldn’t even rate a mention in any paper or on any Web site if he weren’t a college athlete.

Vance was booked and released on misdemeanor charges of having a suspended license and emerging from an alley, the ABH says. It’s believed to be the first arrest of a Georgia football player in 2009.

I don’t know about you, but I sleep better at night knowing that the UGA cops are on top of that emerging-from-an-alley problem.

Hey Bill, I noticed your juvenile like disdain for the relationship between Urban and Timmy in your last blog. Well since the game will be on Halloween then I suppose “creepy” will be a good word to describe the “smack” on the lips those gators are gonna give your pups in a couple of weeks! Enjoy the 5-7 season!

No…It was UGA that moved the series out of the neutral site not Tech. Second…Amazed at how pathetic and scared many UGA fans are at having actually played a decent schedule two years running. Of course Richt had ten wins playing a bunch of patsies. Play three losers and Tech (average BCS team) guaranteed UGA four wins per year to go with the wins against South Carolina, Vandy, and Kentucky (way below average BCS teams) and suddenly UGA had a for sure 7 win season. Throw in a Mississippi or Mississippi State team and there is win number 8. Only need to win two of four games against teams similar in talent to get the ten wins. What a joke of a program to be backing off playing sub-talented teams like ASU and OSU all because you are afraid they might just win with much less talent!!!

I guess I will always laugh from this point on whenever I hear that UGA is a good team! Who with any talent couldn’t win 10 wins with that schedule.

Good decision by the Dawgs not to play in Atlanta in the dome..Tech wants to because Bobby Dodd stadium is one of the worse stadiums in the country…I have said it many times on this blog: If you want to get respect as a top notch football program at least have good facilities..the toilets overflow at Tech’s stadium, the food is horrible, the seats uncomfortable, etc..Do you actually think that recruits get to see this?

Tech/UGA needs to stay at years end on school campus. Not hard to figure that out. Once Dawgs get back on track, and they will, then Tech/GA rivalry will garner national attention now that Tech is winning. Best thing that could happen for State of Georgia is for both teams to be having great seasons when they play each other. National TV, media exposure, etc. Add to that a barn burner of a game and we all reap benefits.

The reason Tech was interested in the Dome game and then going to Bobby Dodd in 2012 is that it would move UGA to the other year’s rotation. Right now, Tech’s 3 most attractive opponents are UGA, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. We play them all at home in the same year, and it would have been nice to move one of them to the opposite year.

Concerning basketball, I don’t know why Tech and UGA couldn’t play twice a year. They could play once on the Friday night before the football game in the city where that game was being played, and in the other city just before conference play started. They are only 70 miles apart, and each could drop one of their cupcake games. Why not?

My thoughts exactly. Why would be “emerging from an alley” be a crime? Is entering an alley with a suspended DL a crime too? How about staying in an alley with a suspended DL?

The ABH seems to be a little zealous on the investigative reporting

BK – right on about the football game and schedule. Evans was polite to considerate the game, but there was no benefit to UGA at all. I disagree on the basketball though, some of those Omni games were intense, and it was cool to see the Omni split red/yellow right down the middle. Love the Turner Field baseball game….that has to be one of the better regular season baseball games all year…hope for an even bigger crowd next spring.

The problem with the gimmick offense that Tech runs, is that their opponents never see it and can only practice for it a few days during the week of preparation headed into that game.

We all saw what LSU did when they were allowed ample time to prepare.

Am I ever worried that UGA is going to lose to Tech? Not really. But, the score differential would’ve been extra ugly with a whole summer to prepare for the ’70s style offense.

UGA needs to focus on solid football. UGA does not need to move games, they do not need to play on Thursdays, they do not need to give tickets away in order to half way fill up a stadium. Other schools may need gimicks in order to have a half full stadium.

UGA should straighten out the pathetic coaching situation (coordinators) and not worry about gimmicks.

Anything between Tech and uga should remain a home and home!!! As for the young man getting arrested…sounded insignificant when I read about and, frankly, had forgotten about it. WHY would you bring it back up?

Off subject, I STILL do not believe that the uga football team is as bad as their record…something will ‘click’ and i have a feeling that things will turn around, quickly! Good luck in that regard!

What talented QB in his RIGHT MIND is going to want to sign with Tech in the near future?? What telented WR in his RIGHT MIND will want to sign with Tech in the near future??

Tech is lucky to have the players it does now which were recruited before Paul Johnson stole Parkview High School’s playbook. As soon as these guys are gone, Tech will be right back to its roots. PITIFUL.

In the future, no RB that wishes to play beyond the collegiate level will want to play at Tech either. Dwyer will lose positions in the draft, and big money, strictly because NFL teams have NO CLUE how he would do in a pro-style offense.

Enjoy this little burst of wins right now Techies, because once this class is gone, you will be the program screaming to get Paul Johnson and his Pop Warner Offense out of Atlanta. UGA will always be THE team in Georgia.

Gotta disagree on the Omni games Bill. They were fantastic. One of my favorite memories was the ‘88 game with Elmore Spencer hitting outlet passes to guard for breakaway layups as we beat Tech by 20 or more. The crowd was going wild chanting “We Want Erk” as that was the week Dooley had resigned. Phillips Arena or out in Duluth either place would be great.

You think any RB is going to want to spend his college career playing the same gimmick he did back in High School??

I guarantee you this class of players on Tech’s team were PISSED as soon as they found out what Paul Johnson was bringing with him.

It worked in DivII at Southern…. but please tell me where the victories at Navy were??…..

We do not believe in Wide Receivers, so all we need you to do is run right or left, and right before you get your head knocked off by one of those all powerful ACC Linebackers, simply flip the ball to your trailing Running Back.. um, we were able to recruit running backs after Dwyer left right.. Anyway, if we don’t have any running backs signed we are just going to need you to get your head knocked off by the all powerful ACC Linebacker, because you will have NO passing option. so are you ready to commit to my High School Gimmick program son??”

Bill – Keeping the Dawgs at home is a good idea. Why would UGA want to help Tech out with its scheduling? Word is that Damon was all for playing the game until Tech said they would not play 3 years in a row away from Dodd and asked UGA to move the 2012 game to Tech. The nerve of those Techies – but this may be the only time we “wipe the smile off of Tech fans’ faces” this year.
