Can Dogs still have a winning season?

I’ll be off as usual on Tuesday and the Blawg will return on Wednesday.

In the meantime, I wanted to leave you with a topic I thought might spark some interesting discussion. Like our revised expectations for Mark Richt’s 2009 team.

What do you think Georgia's regular season record will be?

Back in early September, I wrote that I thought the Dogs would finish the regular season with a 9-3 record.  A lot of you agreed with me. A week or so earlier, in a poll, you said that you’d be disappointed if the Dogs didn’t win at least nine games, plus a bowl.

While still mathematically possible, that’s not very likely.

Over their past dozen games, the Dogs are 7-5, and after Saturday’s loss to Tennessee, that matches the most optimistic predictions I heard of what Georgia’s record is likely to be this season.

But, frankly, a lot of folks I’ve heard from don’t see Georgia winning four more games. I’m hearing quite a few 6-6 predictions or even 5-7.

The only remaining games the Dogs are flatly expected to win are Vandy (which just lost to Army) and Tennessee Tech, this season’s jabroni.

Kentucky and Auburn? More difficult to predict. I think the Dogs can take the Wildcats. Auburn looks tougher, though not as tough as the Tigers’ record so far would indicate. I mean, they made the Arkansas defense look decent!

As for Florida, well, it doesn’t look good barring another injury to Tim Tebow. (By the way, did you see those CBS shots of Urban Meyer seemingly trying to rub noses with his quarterback Saturday night in Baton Rouge? Creepy.)

Georgia Tech definitely looks like a potential loss right now, but keep in mind that they don’t appear to have any defense. If Georgia can get back on the offensive page it occupied against South Carolina and Arkansas, that game could look like Tech-FSU. Last team standing wins. Only hopefully our team wouldn’t run out of steam like Bobby Bowden’s did.

So how do you think the Dogs will finish? Share your predictions in the comments, vote in the poll or both.

When is Coach Richt going to be addressed about the problems of this season? Who is going to hold him accountable? When will the solutions start? How about asking some tough questions, now?

We have 3 very winnable games left on the schedule against Vandy, TnTech, and UK. The remaining games of UF, AU, and GT are what will decide this season. I’m guessing me have 2 losses remaining on the schedule against UF and either AU or GT. I don’t think we will lose to all 3, although it is very possible. But I’m guessing for a 7-5 season, and a bowl win to be 8-5 overall

Why is eveyone surprised that the Vols beat UGA? They have decent athletes too. And to say Monte Kiffin over Bobo in this pro style offense is a mismatch doesn’t know football. Anyone with half a brain could see Monte taking Bobo to school (3 offensive points, not penetrating the 34 yardline)would vouch for that. Give the Vols a little bit of credit. Yea, UGA played bad…….(or did UT help them play bad along the way?)

If Richt and his staff act quickly to solve some of the offense’s problems, it’s still possible to salvage the rest of the season and go 8-4. That’s the best we can hope for. Five and seven would be a disaster.

Right after the Dawgs lost to #4 LSU, I thought our chances of beating Florida actually improved. I remembered past Dawg seasons, and historic patterns of over-achieving in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, when almost every season we’d win a game or two we had no business winning. Remember Florida ‘85? Alas, the Tennessee debacle proved we are in a much different UGA era now – not sure I’m gonna like what it brings…

7-5..Dawgs will lose to Fla of course; that score depends on Meyer’s mood. (lets hope it’s good). Malzone (sp?) at Auburn is licking his chops at facing the Dogs D in Athens, where Auburn has a winning record. We will lose that one 50-49.

Then a fun filled trip to the Weedeater Bowl.I am so excited. I hear Shreveport is really nice in mid December.

3-3; and everyone seems to be jumping ship. Give me a break people. You beat a very good Arkansas team as well as South Carolina. The loss to UT was indeed disappointing, but take into account that UT played the best they have ever played. I don’t think Florida will have as great a game as UT did.

Real fans should stick with your team when you have a bad year out of 10. Stop the calls for personnel changes… you do that at the end of a season, not in the middle of it. You’ve got the talent, keep rooting on your kids, they can pull it together.

Why hasn’t CMR fired someone yet?!? What happened Saturday in Knoxville is unacceptable! We’ve been out coached the last two games & continue to have the same issues! My wife wasn’t able to watch the game but after hearing what happened & seeing the highlights. She says “someone needs to be fired for that!” Now that’s from a woman born & raised in Athens whose family all have some sort of direct connection to the university. She knows some football but knows enough to know changes are needed NOW! My take on it is if play a good game but loose then the other team was just better than us that day. BUT when we get out coached & keep making the same mistakes then something needs to change! I love CMR & thinks he’s the right man for the job BUT if he won’t make the changes that are needed then he needs to go! I can see that happening in Evans demands changes be made. If Evan won’t demand changes then he needs to go too! I’m willing to see if Bobo & CMR can correct the O. On D keep Garner for recruiting, if needed move him to TE coach. Fire the rest of the D staff & as part of the new hires should be a special teams coach! He found BVG so if we can’t get a big name then go hire a up & comer that will be able to do the job! The new DC needs free reign to bring in guys to implement his style D. If CMR won’t make changes how about Charlie Strong?

7-5 sounds about right…. but it could just as easily turn into 5-7. I’d like to be able to think the schedule sets up nicely for the rest of the season if we can get some confidence back. Perhaps this team can find an identity next week and then take advantage of the two weeks to prepare for Florida. Call me crazy, but I actually think our defense may be able to stop Florida this year…I don’t think it will matter though… given our lack of running game I can’t see how we are going to score on that Florida defense and I suspect their defense will even put some points on the board.

Tennessee is pretty awful. How UGA lost 45-19 to those guys is beyond puzzling. Seems like an unfocused bunch and internal changes should be made. Now way Tn won that game like that because they were just better, bc they’re not. UT is plain terrible. Crompton is arguably the worst QB the SEC has seen in the past decade and he looked like a Heisman candidate. UGA has some internal issues that need to be corrected..

5-7. Tennessee Tech is the only one I feel good about, but they have scored 50 points before and coming off a loss to Florida big or little may deflat our team completely. We lose to either Kentucky or Vandy but beat the other. Aurburn and Georgia Tech eat our defense despite what our offense does or doesn’t do. We actually make a game against Florida to make people think we aren’t so bad, and Dawgs fans will wonder how we did not get slaughtered. And there we are at 5-7 to finish the season.

This conversation reminds me a lot of 2007. Blistered by TN in a game we were to have won, everyone running around like the sky is falling, and dire predictions for the future. One problem we have is FL is better than they were in 2007…I think we pull it together and go 8-4. That said there is no question that we need to address the defense and special teams coaching postions in the off season. These problems have lingered for too long must be corrected. Bobo gets another year to pull it together.

No changes 5-7 and the program will be in even worse turnmoil.

Big changes 8-4 plus a bowl victory

Finish the year in the top 15 and a lot of momentum for next year

Changes That Need To Be:
Ritch takes over play calling and OC responsiblities immediately
Martinez is demoted or let go completely (begin the process of replacement)
Discipline restored to players (no dancing during the game; penalties and turnovers dramatically reduced)
No more directional kickoffs
Gray or Murry playing a lot at QB
Ealey and Thomas splitting time at RB…put Samuels on the bench until he reaches 20 years of age
AJ and Rene must become team leaders and motivate team mates

Georgia has gotten most of the AJC top 11 every year. Nick Saban has had 2 recruiting years and he is kicking ass with Mike Shulas players for the most part. FIRE that sorry SOB WIllIE MARTINEZ and hire somebody that knows how to coach. All I heard at the first of the year was how Georgia’s offense was going to play smash mouth football and now I hear the tallent isn’t there. WTF is up with that?

5-7, let’s withdraw from the SEC and join the ACC where we can be average and win 8 or 9 games a year like Ga. Tech.

Here we go again

October 12th, 2009
5:13 pm

7-5

Dogs will defeat Vandy by 14 next week

Then get blown out at FL.

Then will dominate TN Tech, but the score will make it look much closer (offensive stalls in the red zone, turnovers)

Then they will win in a thriller against Auburn (probably will be helped out by a terrible key penalty thanks to the karma of the football gods to make up for LSU). This will help get everyone off Richt’s back.

They’ll beat KY comfortably by double digits, and before you know it, UGA will be riding a 3 game win streak, Dawg nation will have some swagger back, and Tech fans will be getting nervous.

Tech will then pull out a W on The Saturday After Thanksgiving in a close game that goes down to the final play, simply because Tech will have more to play for and is a better coached, hungrier team.

Where do they play the papajohns.com bowl again?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee safety Eric Berry and Tennessee return specialist Dennis Rogan were named Southeastern Conference players of the week.

Crompton complete 35 of 40 passes for a career-high 410 yards and six touchdowns in the Volunteers’ win over Alabama.

Berry had 11 sacks, a career-best four interceptions and a fumble recovery in Tennessee’s win at Alabama.

Rogan had two kickoff returns for 200 yards and two touchdowns in Tennessee’s victory over Alabama.

Tennessee center Cody Sullins was offensive lineman of the week, while defensive line honors went to Tennessee’s Wes Brown. Tennessee safety Janzen Jackson was freshman of the week.

I figured out the problem…we’re using the wrong players on the wrong side of the ball. If we just change it up a little bit, we’re going to sweep the rest of the season! Here’s how:

If we let our defense play on offense, we’d be unstoppable because our defensive players constantly bounce off people rather than a tackle occurring and are always yards away from the opposing team on pass plays.

If we let the offense play defense, we know there would never be a hole to run through and we’d always have somebody in the backfield.

Quick…call CMR and tell him the plan!

Dude….Denial isn’t just a river in Africa.

UT has several all-SEC players, and a coaching staff with a plan to extract the maximum results from the team. We’ve had our issues this year; Crompton’s erratic play, and our lack of depth among them, but we are a team that is on the rise.

UGA got trucked on Saturday not because they had lesser talent, but because their coaches didn’t put the talent they have in positions to execute. AJ and Rennie are top notch, but I rarely heard their names called. Get the most out of what you have….or the pipeline will begin to dry up!

From a Tech fan:

You will beat Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Tennessee Tech. You will lose to Florida. You will beat either Tech or Auburn, but not both, and finish the regular season 7-5. Right now it looks like that team will be Auburn, but Tech/UGA is always an emotional game. Tech has either beaten or nearly beaten UGA many times when they shouldn’t have been in the game.

Remember UGA fans, things are rarely as bad as they seem (right now), or as good as they seem (at the end of 2007).

Here’s guessing and hoping that 8-4 is the call. We SHOULD beat Vandy, UK, and Tennessee Tech. That’s 6 wins. I don’t think UGA offense is as bad as it showed on Saturday, nor it’s defense as bad either. Whether we get those two more wins depends on Richt and his motivational skills as a coach. A couple of years ago, the Dawgs were staring a similar season in the face, turned it around, beat Auburn, GT, and Va Tech and finished 9-4. I think they can do it again. The talent is there. The coach needs to give them something to get up for.

As bad as they are they should beat all but Gators. Remember 2 years ago and how bad they were at Tennessee. They then beat Vandy, Kentucky, Florida, Auburn (easily), Tech, and Hawaii. Deja Vu!

UGA can be last year’s Notre Dame and play in the Aloha bowl in Hawaii against the locals there if they are lucky. Or maybe the toilet bowl would be a good one for us with all the sorry players and piss poor coaches we have. Vandy is notorious for giving UGA a hard time. We win one more game the rest of the way and finish 4-8. No bowl and another sorry year ahead on the horizon.

We will be fine for the rest of the season because we are going to practice the week of every game from now on. We did not practice prior to the TN game. My bad.

Winning year, things over there are never what they seem bad or good. They will lose to Fla. maybe Tech. Notice when the pressure is off them they play lights out. They beat a pretty good Auburn team two years ago in Athens when no chips were on the table. The choke is over now they will go about playing over their heads messing everybody else’s season up.

Agree with General Neyland. UT has some very good athletes, and UGA’s loss wasn’t solely becauwse the Dawgs sucked. As CMR admits, UGA got out-coached and out-played. However, most of us are over-reacting. The staff will be intact until at least the end of this season, so let’s hope for the best. 7-5 seems likely, but strange things do happen.

This team could beat anyone left on the schedule, even Florida. That’s what is so disapointing, the talent is there. The loss to Tenn should be enough to shake up the staff and get them to either start performing or start sending out their resumes.

Vanderbilt is calling for a blackout Saturday, urging Commodores fans to wear black to the homecoming game against Georgia. .That almost guarantees a dawg win, I say 7 and 5, not great, but could be worse.

REAL FANS???

October 12th, 2009

I’m getting sick and tired of hearing people say that a real fan will support their team and coaches throughout the season no matter what. While that is partly true, it doesn’t make it wrong to criticize enept coaches that don’t have a clue.

Well, to all of you that say that those who criticize are not real fans, “I am a real fan!” A real fan wants their team to be the best that they can be. I’ve been a fan for 32 years. It doesn’t bother me one bit to bash a defensive coordinator that has been working at Georgia for 9 years. Willie doesn’t have a clue what Georgia is about, he doesn’t represent our team well, and he doesn’t have a clue what is going on during the course of a game. He must go, and this is coming from a REAL FAN. Bobo, on the other hand, played at Georgia and has a lot of connections to the program. However, you can’t give a free pass for being loyal. He is not cut out to be a OC, and he must be demoted as well.

Anyone who thinks someone is not a REAL FAN for saying things like this needs to just shut up! Many of us said these same things last year, and many dawg fans thought we were being to harsh and weren’t true fans. Well, look at our team now! Would all of you real fans want Ray Golf back? I don’t think so. Real fans want the best for their team, and Richt must make changes to make this team better. If not, we will continue to fall in the years to come.

OK Stop the Madness…remember when we thought it was the end of the world after losing to “gasp” Vandy and Kentucky back to back (after surviving MS State)…then we go and beat Ranked Auburn #5 and Tech and Va Tech in the bowl game…this was just 3 years ago…GT, Brian and Denver Dawg have it right – we will win a game or 2 that we have no business winning – because that is what Richt does.

I’m embarassed. Something is wrong with our coaching and players game enthusiasm. For some reason(s), we never seem to win the key games. UT was a pivotal game for season success and it appears to me that the team was simply not prepared to play and WIN notwithstanding the tough schedule. I will not, however, forsake the “Dawgs” at this time, or ever.

FL and AU are the only two teams left that UGA will struggle with. FL will win big. If I had to bet today I’d say AU will win easily, but their team is really a mystery cause their schedule has been so soft.

6-6 at best & 5-7 at worst. CMR needs to 86 soft Willie asap & let Garner finish the season as interim.

I am not so sure Vandy is gimme. I do believe there will be gradual improvement.
